WATER TABLES OFFERS VARIED VIEWPOINTS ON WATER
G
rowing up in Minnesota, Bend artist Patricia Clark was surrounded by water. In “the land of ten thousand lakes” water was a dominant presence in the landscape and a way of life. Summers were spent swimming, fishing, canoeing on placid lakes. But water could also gather shocking force. Clark’s otherwise happy childhood was marked by the painful memories of the Red River flooding her family home—not once, but twice. Her relationship with water deepened. As Clark began developing her marks and artistic language, she created “mappings” of her native state. She registered the contours of the land, noted the depths, drew grids and marked the water. Fifty years later and settled in Bend, Clark felt the acute absence of water in the high desert. Droughts and forest fires sharpened her awareness of water issues. Her curiosity led her to study the water table—the top plane of our vast underground aquifers. Over the last five years, the water table has continued to feed Clark’s work, culminating in two exhibits. Bend Art Center’s Water Tables exhibit features mixed-media works by Patricia Clark. Her clayboard pieces include smudges of charcoal and layers of pencil, ink and watercolor. A master printmaker (and founder of A6 Print Studio), Clark also carved marks into the clayboard surface, giving each piece the quality of an etching or relief plate. Clark enlisted six colleagues (current or former Central Oregonians) to join in the exhibit: encaustic artist Barbara Hudin, photographer Carol Sternkopf and local sculptors Abney Wallace, Ron Schultz, Bill Cravis and Christian Brown. Hudin’s pieces reflect the blazing sun and baked earth in the shocking demise of the Salton Sea, once the largest lake in California. Sternkopf ’s blue and green saturated photos look as though they were shot underwater, looking upward through the surface of a lake. In fact, Sternkopf ’s photos are an amalgamation of images digitally layered and colorized to create water where there was none. The four sculptors of Water Tables were given a novel assignment. Clark purchased four wooden tables from IKEA, doling them out to each artist as a starting point. Wallace chopped his table into wooden shards, arranging them in an open, rock-like pattern on an oil-black plane for his “Fracking Table.” Cravis’s table is transformed into a floating iceberg, with water-rippled legs and a painted blue sea backdrop, and two miniature figures perched on the sharp point of ice. Brown’s table is laminated in a variety of plastic shopping bags, with saw-dust filled water bottles arranged on the table top—a commentary on plastic’s infiltration into the environment and the degradation of our water supply. Schultz’s table combines aspects of earth, air, fire and water, and serves as an homage to “the Green Man,” a symbolic figure of regeneration. Clark’s copious sketches and smaller mixed-media works were curated for Water Tables: Sketches, on display at COCC’s Barber Library through November 27. Both Water Tables exhibits inspired a bevy of talks, classes and a school program exploring water’s presence, absence and importance in Oregon’s high desert. Several partner organizations planned programs connected to the Water Tables exhibits. Scalehouse will present Disparate Voices, an exploration of the Oregon landscape, water and the impact of climate change with Water Tables artist Patricia Clark and USGS Geologist Jim O’Connor. Part of the “Scalehouse Voices” series, Disparate Voices will be held at OSU-Cascades on Wednesday, November 7 at 6pm. Bend Art Center is also offering several community classes inspired by water tables, as well as a school program which uses the Water Tables exhibit to teach students about local hydrology. Find details online at bendartcenter.org/water-tables-program-guide or call Bend Art Center at 541-330-8759.

Art at the Oxford
T
ARTS
he Oxford Hotel presents Mary Medrano’s colorful acrylic paintings Feathers and Tails, continuing through December. Medrano will attend the champagne opening on First Friday, November 7, from 5:30-7pm.
A BFA graduate of Western Michigan University, with certification in graphic design and visual communications from UC Santa Cruz, Medrano notes that painting is her favorite method of storytelling. She adds, “It’s also effective in expressing thoughts and emotions.” When working in graphic design for many years in San Jose, California, she became known as the Crow Lady, often using crows in her work. Upon her move with her husband to Bend, and a full time career as an artist, birds and often crows became her chosen subject. Her bird paintings, although fanciful, often express conflict between the natural world and humans. Crows and other avian subjects represent nature while the paintings’ collaged torn paper and jagged triangles of broken glass (often found on local hiking trails) represent human litter endangering the birds. The artist recently commented, with surprise and humor, that cats have now appeared in her “studio full of birds.” The cats, over scale in size with large, intensely focused yellow eyes and playfully painted designs on their would-be coats, seem to reside peaceably next to the spirited birds on studio walls (and at the Oxford exhibit).

Callen’s Creatures of Glass & Light
J
Piece by Joanie Callen 2018
oanie Callen takes you on a magical mystery tour through an explosion of color and light. As whimsical creatures come to life, experience an expansion of the fantasy in your mind. Contemplate the colors and reflections from stained glass windows in cathedrals in Europe. See vibrant colorful creatures happily dancing in a beautiful garden. This is the realm of excitement and enchantment this mosaic artist hopes to transport you into. Vibrant glass, colored mirror, dichroic glass, imported beads and many sparkly objects are seemingly thrown up in the air and kissed by a rainbow only to land happily on a mirror frame or a playful beast to forever brighten your home and life. Joanie Callen is a mosaic artist living in Bend. Her love of color, especially strong saturated colors dominate her work. Fascinated with the mosaic art form, Joanie studied classical mosaics in Ravenna, Italy. The technique learned was the ancient Byzantine method of setting tesserae (pieces of glass) directly into a mortar bed. This Italian experience inspired her to translate the ancient technique into a modern interpretation. Joanie’s current focus is to include customizing fused glass shapes and a multitude of complicated beading to accentuate her creatures. Joanie is always on the lookout for interesting forms and creatures to apply a multitude of objects in order to create a magical mosaic art sculpture. She does not really start out with a plan, but says that the creatures seem to create themselves as she progresses with their development. One minute they are plain and lifeless and after adding an eye, an eyebrow, a beaded face, or a curly tail all of a sudden they are on their way to becoming a personality to be reckoned with. Journey to Oblivion
Desert Dreams
Renewal Crop
Positively Surrealistic by LINDEN GROSS, One Stop Writing Shop
M
ost artists see the world a little differently than the rest of us. With Bend surrealist painter Carol Connett, that’s an understatement of massive proportion. In Carol’s work, a waterfall flows from a tiger’s mouth, a buck sports an evergreen rack (think branches) and a desert-scape body, while a human melds into a tree trunk, a bird, a sea snail or a jellyfish. That’s assuming the person isn’t riding a camel with a TV on their head (Carol’s statement about brainwashing) or a rhino whose horns are on fire. Carol started conjuring up these alternate realities when she was just eight years old. She would go down to a 20-acre piece of property across from her house, sit with her sandwich and let her imagination run wild. “I would sense what it would be like to have multiple arms. I would pick up a rock and feel it with the hand belonging to the arm that didn’t exist,” she recalls. “I would think I had wings and flap them. I would look at trees and see them as body parts with branches stuck on them.” Decades later, she still enjoys creating potential realities. “Working from my own personal mythology, I create worlds, morphing creatures and the rules of nature,” she says. “Cooperation between species is a reoccurring theme; no animal or spirit is forced to work with humans in my art. There’s no subservience. Rather, there’s an equality. They cooperate as friends. Water Table by Bill Cravis

“My paintings are also deeply personal. These landscapes are my home—I am always in there somewhere. Although some of my work incorporates the intense challenges humanity and the natural world face these days, it’s always my goal to view the world from a positive vantage point. The world is amazing and wonderful and, yes, we can make a difference. I’ll also include a nod to technology that adds a little comedy to the commentary.” Carol, whose work has been featured in several Los Angeles gallery shows over the last few years, mostly paints in acrylic and occasionally oil, and has started to incorporate fiber into her pieces, creating paintings on canvas and sewing them into quilted wall hangings. When a well-formed idea for a painting shows up—often when she’s in spin class—she’ll lose track of what she’s supposed to be doing. “It’s like some kind of daydream on steroids,” she says. In contrast, vague ideas result in her drawing “piles of junk to the point that I’m surrounded by crumpled paper on the floor” until, days later, she finally gets what she wants. The next day she decides if it’s garbage, almost there or perfect. Even in the latter case, she’ll go back and try to do a better job. “I don’t settle,” she says. “I make sure it’s the best thing I can possibly draw, because that’s the blueprint. If I don’t get the drawing right, which is the hardest part, the painting won’t work.”
ARTS OSU-Cascades Alum Returns to North America After Seven Years Abroad
K
atrina Slade (formerly Sentgeorge) is now living in Canada, her fourth country of residence since leaving Oregon after graduate school in 2011. World-travelling OSU-Cascades alum Katrina Slade has made a decision that some might consider radical. She has left the stability of a teaching career to pursue her passion of being a professional artist. Slade and her husband, Ryan, who is a Canadian citizen, decided to move from their home in Germany to his native Canada because of the professional opportunities available to them both. She has previously lived in Germany, South Korea and Japan. Now pursuing permanent residency in Canada, Slade has many plans for her art career. Online sales will be a primary focus for her. “Times are changing for artists. There are many

several years, with collectors in Singapore, China, Germany and the States. When asked about her favorite type of project, she didn’t hesitate to say abstract painting. A graduate of OSU Cascades in 2010, Slade has a BFA degree in painting and drawing. Slade’s most recent painting series, titled the Muse Series, was completed while on an artist residency in the South of France. The location of her residency, La Muse Artist and Writers Retreat in the mountains outside Carcassonne, is an inspiration to her, and influenced the title of the series. Slade has been on this residency two consecutive years in a row, with hopes of returning again. She has always been influenced by travel and the experience of being surrounded by other cultures. Her extended time living and traveling in Japan is the greatest influence of all. “I just love
the refined beauty of the Japanese aesthetic. In art and design, but also in the small things, like gorgeous packaging in the grocery store or the unique artfulness of the manhole covers in the streets. It’s really a beautiful place,” she says about her admiration for Japan. About the Artist Katrina Slade has her Muse Series and many other paintings for view on her website, where you can also read her blog about being an international artist. Her most recent exhibition, Reflections, a group show, was held at Anna Klinkhammer Galerie in Dusseldorf, Germany. Slade was recently a guest blogger on Wanderella. co. She has been accepted into the Catapult business program for artists subsidized by the government of New Brunswick. Katrina can be contacted by email at hello@ katrinaslade.com. Ural Thomas & The Pain + Fortune's Folly at Volcanic Theatre November 3 at 8:30pm
P
arallel 44 Presents the Classic Soul wizardry of Ural Thomas & the Pain with Eugene’s Funk/Rockers Fortune’s Folly on Saturday November 3 at Volcanic Theatre Pub. This is going to be an amazing night of inspiringly soulful live music. Ural Thomas & the Pain If life was at all fair Ural Thomas would be a household name, his music slotted into countless sweet, seductive mixtapes between James Brown, Otis Redding and Stevie Wonder (all of whom Thomas has performed with). Straddling the line between hot soul shouter and velvety-smooth crooner, Thomas released a few singles in the late 60’s and early 70’s; most notably Can You Dig It, which featured backing vocals from soul luminaries Merry Clayton, Mary Wells and Brenda Holloway. Thomas played over forty shows at the legendary Apollo Theater before turning his back on an unkind business and heading home to Photo courtesy of Parallel 44 Portland, Oregon. It goes without saying that a man practically built out of rhythm would never stop playing music. Thomas began hosting a regular Sunday night jam session at his home that ran for nearly twenty years. A de facto mentor to many of the younger players, Thomas reminds us all that “If you care about what you’re doing, you need to build those muscles and do the work. Don’t get discouraged, do it for love. Even if you’re digging ditches, do it with passion.” One might think after a sizeable taste of early success Thomas would be more than a touch bitter – yet the opposite is true. “We have to be positive if we want the world to get better,” Thomas advises. “We’ve come a long way, but if you carry a grudge with the whole world you’ll stop your growth. We’re a family, all just brothers and sisters, descendants of Adam. You can’t get anywhere without an open heart.” A developing artist at nearly eighty years old, for Thomas music has always been about bringing people together. “If we play for twenty people we cook it like it’s twenty thousand” says Thomas. “If we make someone smile, we’re satisfied. They’re ain’t no difference between us. It’s all love and brotherhood. If folks listen to my record and feel that, I’ll feel very blessed.” Standing in bold defiance of the idea that aging is a reason to slow down and stop living, for Thomas the right time to get down is the next time someone plugs in a guitar or puts on a record. Ural is ready – are you? Fortune’s Folly Fortune’s Folly is an energetic and dynamic four-piece alternative rock band hailing from Eugene, Oregon. Their mission is to create a passionate, accepting, and engaged community through music and performance. Fortune’s Folly owes its success to the incredible support received from fans turned friends. Their desire is to return that love and enthusiasm through music and create an atmosphere in which people can escape their differences and share their love for art and each other. The FollyFam, our ever-growing network of fans, includes people from all walks of life. Help them expand the community and create something much greater than ourselves. In a world that needs it more each day, let’s provide an avenue for people to accept and appreciate each other through a shared love of music.

This group has been featured every season since High Desert Chamber Music (HDCM) was founded in 2008. Based in the Crown City—Pasadena, California—the members have worked together in motion picture and TV recording studios and are current and former members and principal players of some of Southern California’s most renowned music organizations, including the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra, Pasadena Symphony, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, San Diego Symphony and San Diego Chamber Orchestra. onday, November 26 at 7:30pm The Travelin’ McCourys will set fire to the stage with their arsenal of burning bluegrass. The performance is presented by the nonprofit Tower Theatre Foundation and promises to be overflowing with inventive bluegrass and stellar musicianship. The McCoury brothers were born into the tradition, and spent many years on the road with their dad, Del. However, The Travelin’ McCourys have never been a band to limit themselves to one genre, they’re always looking for inspiration beyond the banjo, and that’s why Rolling Stone described them as, “A sublime combination of rock and bluegrass, contemporary and classic, old and young.” This innovative thinking has allowed them collaborations with a host of impressive names, including, The Allman Brothers, Phish, Dierks Bentley and Keller Williams, to name a few. That’s not all! Opening the evening is a set from The Jacob Jolliff Band. Jacob is a Northwest native widely recognized as the mandolin player for Yonder Mountain String Band. His group features long-time partner-incrime and Grand Master Fiddle Champion, Alex Hargreaves, his all-time favorite picking buddy Stash Wyslouch on guitar and Portland jazz champion Jeff Picker on bass. It’ll be a high-energy set featuring progressive roots music sure to heat things up. All tickets are on sale now. Vienna Boys Choir present Centuries of Sound Sung with Childlike Charm
F
riday, November 16 at 7:30pm the Vienna Boys Choir returns to the Tower to showcase their 520-year tradition of timeless music and angelic harmony. Presented by the nonprofit Tower Theatre Foundation, their spirited performance features everything from Austrian folk songs to classical masterpieces, and songs from across the globe. With a history dating back to 1296, the Vienna Boys Choir has been associated with many of the world’s great composers, including Mozart, Bruckner, and Salieri; in addition, Franz Schubert, Joseph Haydn and Michael Haydn were choristers. However, with their broad repertoire, a Vienna Boys Choir performance is not just a concert for a classical connoisseur; it’s a musical event that appeals to all ages. A highlight of this performance will be when Bend’s Trinity Lutheran School Choir join the boys on stage for two special songs. “Trinity feels honored and blessed to have the chance to sing with one of the best children’s choirs in the world!” says Director of Worship and the Arts, Jon Vevia, “Trinity has students in preschool through high school and places a heavy emphasis on the arts. We decided to put together a special, auditioned honor choir for this occasion, made up of twenty-four second grade to high school students, all of whom are excited and looking forward to this unique opportunity.” Join us in continuing and celebrating this enduring tradition. The nonprofit Tower Theatre Foundation owns and operates the historic stage in downtown Bend. The Foundation’s mission is to be the leading performing arts organization, providing cultural and education programs that make an essential contribution to Central Oregon’s lifestyle and strengthen the community. MUSIC
Clarinetist & Comedian Christopher Hall to Perform with The Comic Quartet in Redmond
T

he Redmond Community Concert Association (RCCA) is pleased to welcome Canadian clarinetist and comedian, Christopher Hall and The Comic Quartet, for two performances at Ridgeview High School’s Performing Arts Theatre on Sunday, November 4. In this delightful, laughter filled chamber music concert, he will demystify the rather formal world of chamber music. Audiences will enjoy select classics from the quintet repertoire as well as the often hilarious anecdotes behind the music. Christopher Hall, former principal clarinetist with the Orchestre Métropolitain in Montréal, found work in the orchestra far too serious. Since he was constantly joking around with his fellow orchestra musicians, he decided to combine his two talents and perform both as a clarinetist and a stand-up comedian. During his shows, he probes such important questions as, “What exactly is a musician thinking while he is playing?” and “Do you really even need a conductor?” His answers are both insightful and uplifting. Hall has appeared as a guest soloist and comic with many orchestras throughout Canada. In addition to performing with orchestras, he also contributes to various television and radio shows in English and French. He has appeared in such prestigious comedy festivals as the Just for Laughs, The Winnipeg Comedy Fest and the Grand Rire in Quebec City, and has opened for several prominent American comedians. In addition to bringing extraordinary musical performers to Central Oregon, RCCA is particularly committed to exposing our youth to the value and excitement of learning from these enthusiastic professionals. On Monday following the concerts, Mr. Hall will be sharing his musical and comedy genius with a group of elementary school students from Redmond. RCCA, an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization, has been bringing a wide variety of outstanding musical talent from around the U.S. and the world to our community since 1983. Tickets for the 2pm and 6:30pm performances, sold via season subscription only, are sold out. For more information visit RCCA’s website, www.redmondcca.org or call 541-350-7222.

A Surprising Twist in Fairy Tale Classic Sleeping Beauty
W
himsy Entertainment Theatre for Young Audiences presents Sleeping Beauty. In this twist on the beloved fairy tale, a traditional storyteller reading from his all too well-known book of Sleeping Beauty is quickly usurped by the story’s feisty villain, the evil Griselda. With a magical spell, she literally turns back the hands of time to show what really happened to “Sleeping Betty.” Fortunately, two good fairies and a magical frog help set the story straight, and make sure everyone lives happily ever after. Whimsy Entertainment is excited to debut their new Theatre for Young Audiences Troupe here in Central Oregon. Founder Julee Vadnais has been performing for children for 15 years. Starting at Walt Disney World, and continuing as a professional clown and performer, she has performed all over the country and is proud to bring theatre for young audiences to Central Oregon. Sleeping Beauty contains an all-star cast of seasoned local performers from the Bend community. When asked why theatre for young audiences? “There is something magical about performing for children, it becomes absolutely real for that one hour. They give you an invitation to go back and be part of that world where magic and imagination still exists,” Vadnais says. “They are also the hardest audience, adults are polite and will watch even if they are not completely entertained, children tell you exactly what they think and if you haven’t grabbed their attention they’re gone. It always feels great as an actor to keep children excited and engaged, and to be able to give parents and grandparents a free pass back in time to be part of the magic and create these special memories with their families.” Sleeping Beauty will be performed at Cascades Theatrical Company. The show runs 60 minutes with no intermission. Written by Stacey Lane and produced by special arrangements with Playscripts, Inc. Only six showings — don’t miss this interactive and enchantingly silly performance! Sunday, November 4 at 10am and 11:30am Saturday, November 10 at 11am and 1pm Sunday, November 11 at 10am and 11:30am All tickets are on sale now at BendTickets.com. Miracle on 34th Street Opens at Cascade Theater in November

even actors, a Foley artist, a musical director and a stage manager. Is he Santa Claus? Or is he just some delusional old man? Some people want to believe he is and others want to prove he is not. This seems to be the central theme of Cascade Theatrical Company’s Christmas production of Miracle on 34th Street, but those familiar with the story know better. This is fully a story about belief, imagination and miracles. With seven actors, a Foley artist/sound effects man, a musical director and a stage manager, CTC presents this marvelous story as a movie for the ears. Based on various sources, including an original radio play produced in 1947, this play has all the elements of live radio production including commercials performed by the cast. Miracle on 34th Street opens at Cascade Theater on Friday, November 30 and runs Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through December 22. It’s a proven holiday tradition and is perfect for the entire family. Tickets are available at cascadestheatrical.org or through the box office at 541-389-0803. 26 November 2018 | www.CascadeAE.com

Featuring a dark background painted on canvas, the artist applies crushed and then re-formed metallic strips, brushed with thinned oil paint of varied hues. The irregular surfaces of the metallic strips create reflection, brightened or dulled by the color of applied paints, also suggest a 3D effect. Holton notes that inspiration for the series came “from wandering at night in the forest — urban and natural — seeing what light the eye catches,” perhaps arising from light reflecting on wet leaves or rock shards. These experiences led to his paintings with high light/dark contrast which invites the viewer to pause and observe the presence or absence of light. A native Oregonian, the artist also exhibits enlarged and colorfully rendered photographic portraits of Native Americans of the Cayuse Tribe of northeastern Oregon/southeastern Washington. Again one observes high contrast between the black and white photographs of the subject, and the bright surrounding background. The 5’x4’ painting of Speel-Ye of the Cayuse (among other images) exemplifies the high contrast of the black and white photograph of her face and chest contrasted with the artist’s painting of a brightly rendered, background rug inspired by a traditional Cayuse weave pattern. He also painted a metallic double halo around Speel-Ye’s head, chosen to exemplify the respect for and importance of women in the tribe. Holton divides his time between Bend and southern France where he presently studies printmaking. Brent Lawrence, sculptor and a third generation metal worker, learned metal work as a young boy, from his father, noted artist Gary Lawrence. The elder Lawrence also learned the metal craft from his father. The younger Lawrence pursued his metal craft throughout grade and early high school years. After earning a degree from Portland State University, Brent Lawrence pursued other employment but decided art was his greater interest. He returned to work at Lawrence Gallery in Sheridan where he began to experiment and develop his own style. He perfected cutting and welding bronze along with varied steels; he also enlarged his wildlife imagery, and through intensive experimentation with chemicals, he produced his own unique patinas. Brent Lawrence’s son, Luke Lawrence, a fourth generation metal worker and third generation artist, also experimented with metal work in his early years, much as his father. He graduated from the University of Oregon, majoring in philosophy which included study of the evolution of art, it’s reflection of and impact upon culture. After college, travel to the Caribbean, and touring the U.S., he returned to work with his father and to his own wildlife sculpture. After 30 some years of artistic creation and examination, Brent painstakingly creates his modernized expression of man’s earliest art form — cave drawings. Working with his son, Luke, they form these difficult and demanding replications of the Paleolithic art of 36,000 years ago. Cutting, heating and hammering stainless steel, they utilize their considerable combined skill to form their stylized images of elk, bison, bear, trout, salmon, even dragonflies. They then painstakingly apply Brent’s exclusive patinas to colorize and complete this singular and awardwinning art. The Lawrence’s three-dimensional sculptures, along with Holton’s two-dimensional paintings, appear on the lower and upper level galleries at the Suniver Resort Lodge Betty Gray Gallery. The featured art continues through November 25. Billye Turner curates exhibitions for the Sunriver Resort Lodge gallery, open all hours. Music Education Scholarships Now Available for Three Rivers School Students ver the past 15 years, Sunriver Music Festival has consistently maintained its commitment to music education at Sunriver’s Three Rivers School. Now, through the support of Bennington Properties, the Festival is expanding its support again with a new scholarship program for motivated students. “Robert Bennington recently established a $5,000 matching challenge fund to help support music students in South Deschutes County,” explains Festival Executive Director Pam Beezley. “This generous support has allowed us to now offer scholarships for individual and private lessons.” Beezley adds that no experience in music is necessary, but a clear demonstration of interest and commitment from both students and their parents is required. The scholarship may be used for lessons on any musical instrument, including vocals. The new Fund supports two programs: After school private and small ensemble lessons for band and orchestra students— lessons held at Three Rivers School. Vocal, guitar and piano — private or group lessons — lessons held at various music teachers’ studios in Sunriver (based on schedule availability).
O
“Currently 92 percent of all Three Rivers students participate in music programs,” adds Beezley. “Beginner band has 35 students, advanced band has 58 students, guitar class has 20 students and choir has grown to 70 singers!” Last school year, the Festival provided funds to Three Rivers to purchase new band instruments, repair instruments, purchase new music for band, choir, orchestra and bring professional musicians to the school for educational performances. In December 2017, Concert Rock Violinist Aaron Meyer conducted a threeday Artist in Residence program for all K-8 students. Participants learned how to write a song and put it to music. Each class performed their new composition for their peers, teachers and parents. Recordings were made available for the students to keep. In March 2018, the University of Oregon Brass Quintet performed and conducted a workshop for band students. The quintet included U of O music professors and instructors. he seventh annual Christmas in the Garden event expands and returns to The Oregon Garden’s Rediscovery Forest in historic Silverton, Oregon with an additional 250,000 lights and displays - bringing the total to one million lights. In addition to more lights, the event’s ice skating rink is expanding and additional artisan vendors will join the market. Christmas in the Garden is based on a traditional German Christmas Market, and will take place from 5-9pm, open most days from November 23 through December 31 (closed November 26-27 and December 3-4, 10-11, 24-25). Visitors enter a winter wonderland decorated with amazing and interactive light displays, where they can take photos with Santa, shop from artisan vendors, drink traditional glühwein (hot spiced wine), hot cocoa and other adult beverages, and take in the smells of roasted nuts and tastes of authentic German foods, among other options. Intimate fire pits will be scattered throughout the forest, while carolers, local school choirs and acoustic guitarists provide holiday music. Families can also enjoy ice skating and zooming down the snowless tubing hill. Frosty’s Family Room will also return, offering a warm space in the Oregon Garden Resort, where families can gather for food and activities. “There’s something for everyone at Christmas in the Garden!” said Allie Woodson, marketing manager for The Oregon Garden and Resort. “With the variety of fun attractions, shopping, stunning light displays and delicious food and beverages, it’s the perfect place for families to enjoy the holidays together.” Adults 21+ can also enjoy live music, food and drink (including cocktails, beer and glühwein) in the warm and cozy Biergarten.
