“Cascade was advocating for bicyclists before we had bike lanes or the Burke-Gilman Trail, when there wasn’t any Lycra and everyone wore wool and rode 10-speed bikes. It’s definitely lived up to my expectations as an advocate for bicyclists, whether they’re families, commuters or people who want to reduce their carbon footprint.” JAN JOHNSON, MEMBER, VOLUNTEER, 2012 RIDE LEADER OF THE YEAR

A message from the Board Chair As I write this note to you, we are in the last weeks of a long and exhaustive search for a new executive director. We owe a debt of gratitude to Chuck Ayers, our executive director of 16 years, and can only hope to see the growth and program expansion in the club’s future that it had under his guidance. Although Chuck’s departure is a huge loss, the resulting change in leadership is an opportunity to further the club in new ways. During this transition, we have been reflecting on who we are, the programs we operate and the priorities we assign to the opportunities before us. We have much more work to do to make bicycling a safe and convenient transportation option. Indeed, the tasks ahead are greater than any one group could undertake alone. The work will only grow, because civic leaders have only just begun to embrace the importance of bicycling to vibrant, livable cities. We hope to employ the influence and resources of the club to help create a more powerful and cohesive ecosystem of bicycling, transportation and other groups. We must work together for mutual benefit and multiplied effect. To that end, we are prepared to increase our focus on partnerships that will have longterm benefits to the club, our partners and the ecosystem as a whole. We who ride are a diverse and passionate group. No matter how or where you ride, you are part of this ecosystem. And you have the power to grow and empower the ecosystem. Thank you for working with us, whether as a volunteer, donor, sponsor, event rider or partner, to make bicycling more accessible and enjoyable. This report highlights the club’s 2012 varied accomplishments which, in no small part, are your accomplishments as well. Thank you,

Daniel Weise, Board Chair Cascade Bicycle Club

Thanks to Cascade Training Series (CTS), I crossed the 2012 STP finish line and promptly said, “I want to do that again next year.” Through CTS and Daily Rides, I gained a love for long distance cycling and found some nutty friends who wanted to keep riding all year long. I even managed to convince my sister and partner to sign up for their first STP, and thanks to CTS, they crossed the finish line with smiles on their faces. We are already starting to recruit more friends and family to join us next year!" HEIDI SCHILLINGER, CASCADE TRAINING SERIES PARTICIPANT & CASCADE RIDE LEADER

Looking back at 2012 In 2012, Cascade Bicycle Club crested 15,000 members. With that kind of pedal-power behind us, it’s no surprise that we reached more people, built more partnerships and pedaled more miles than ever before.

HIGHLIGHTS • Coordinated more than 1,500 free daily rides for people of all ages and abilities. Our 200 volunteer ride leaders put in hundreds of hours, leading rides nearly every day of the year in communities across the Puget Sound region. • Organized another great Group Health Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic (STP). In 2012, we boasted our earliest-ever sell-out date: February 21, 2012. The event drew 10,000 riders from three countries and 40 states. • Reached a record 15,000 people through our major riding events: Chilly Hilly, Flying Wheels, the Group Health STP, Ride Around Washington (RAW), Ride from Seattle to Vancouver and Party (RSVP), Flying Wheels Summer Century, High Pass Challenge and Kitsap Color Classic. • Held our first-ever benefit ride, the Red-Bell 100. Our first ride was a huge success, drawing nearly 300 riders who pedaled the scenic route from Redmond to Bellingham in support of two great causes. • Helped convince Seattle City Council to adopt a resolution for a bike-friendly 520 Bridge. Thanks to members and supporters like you, who wrote 1,500 letters to the Seattle City Council, the Council passed a resolution that will ensure the 520 Bridge will be safe and convenient for people on bikes.

• Pushed elected leaders to invest in infrastructure that will make bicycling and walking safer. Seattle usually spends about $6 million a year – about 2 percent of its transportation budget – on bike improvements. We saw huge progress in 2012 and will be working with our Connect Seattle campaign to nearly double that funding in 2013. • Developed the Legislative Scorecard, a resource that educates voters about whether their legislators supported bicycling during the 2012 legislative session. The report recognizes bicycling champions and calls out “broken chains” who consistently opposed bicyclefriendly legislation. • Endorsed 66 candidates and ballot measures in the 2012 general election, 75 percent of which went on to win their respective races.

Our members make this work possible. Thank you for pedaling behind us during 2012 and beyond!

“For the first time in my life I went further than 50 miles on my bike in one ride. You've given me something I never thought I could do. I really appreciate all your group has done for me." BILLIE JO MURRAY, CASCADE TRAINING SERIES PARTICIPANT

Cascade Bicycle Club was founded in 1970 by a handful of recreational bicyclists in Mercer Island, Washington who wanted to advocate for safe places to ride and create community among bicyclists. From these humble origins, the organization has grown into one of the Puget Sound region’s most formidable forces for safer, healthier, more connected communities. With more than 15,000 members, 34 professional staff and more than 700 volunteers, it is the largest organization of its kind in the United States. Vision: Cascade Bicycle Club envisions a community that bicycles – an inclusive, diverse and accepting community where people of all ages and backgrounds bicycle to work, to get around, and for fun and for health, and where bicycling brings people and neighborhoods together. Bicycling will be convenient and safe, connected by a world-class bicycling infrastructure and widely recognized and appreciated as an important contributor to a healthy and fun life and a prosperous and livable community. www.cascade.org • 7400 Sand Point Way NE, Suite 101S, Seattle, WA 98115 • (206) 522-3222
