“Without Cascade’s Major Taylor Project, I would never have thought it possible that biking could change my life so much. I will never stop biking; I just don't think I could. You have started something really awesome, and I can't wait to see it grow. You are empowering kids to do great things with their lives. Keep doing what you do; you are truly an inspiration to so many people." DALIA PEDRO, MAJOR TAYLOR PROJECT PARTICIPANT

A message from the Board Chair As I write this note to you, we are in the last weeks of a long and exhaustive search for a new executive director. We owe a debt of gratitude to Chuck Ayers, our executive director of 16 years, and can only hope to see the growth and program expansion in the club’s future that it had under his guidance. Although Chuck’s departure is a huge loss, the resulting change in leadership is an opportunity to further the club in new ways. During this transition, we have been reflecting on who we are, the programs we operate and the priorities we assign to the opportunities before us. We have much more work to do to make bicycling a safe and convenient transportation option. Indeed, the tasks ahead are greater than any one group could undertake alone. The work will only grow, because civic leaders have only just begun to embrace the importance of bicycling to vibrant, livable cities. We hope to employ the influence and resources of the club to help create a more powerful and cohesive ecosystem of bicycling, transportation and other groups. We must work together for mutual benefit and multiplied effect. To that end, we are prepared to increase our focus on partnerships that will have long-term benefits to the club, our partners and the ecosystem as a whole. We who ride are a diverse and passionate group. No matter how or where you ride, you are part of this ecosystem. And you have the power to grow and empower the ecosystem. Thank you for working with us, whether as a volunteer, donor, sponsor, event rider or partner, to make bicycling more accessible and enjoyable. This report highlights the club’s 2012 varied accomplishments which, in no small part, are your accomplishments as well. Thank you,
Daniel Weise, Board Chair Cascade Bicycle Club Education Foundation
“Applying for Cascade’s BizCycle program enhanced and formalized our internal bike culture and provided the opportunity to share that enthusiasm with the community. Thanks to Cascade, we have big plans for encouraging even more of our employees to ride bikes and helping other businesses do the same.” JOSH JENSEN, ANCHOR QEA
Looking back at 2012 Cascade Bicycle Club Education Foundation is pedaling faster, stronger and further than ever before. In 2012, we launched new programs, set new participation records and broadened our reach into new communities. We’re working with friends, partners, neighbors and community leaders to make bicycling safer for people of all ages and abilities – because when bicycling is safer, more people will ride.
HIGHLIGHTS • Launched BizCycle, a best practices guide and first-of-its-kind certification system designed to incentivize businesses to become bike-friendly workplaces. • Trained 17 volunteers to be effective Community Bicycle Advocates through the Advocacy Leadership Institute (ALI), an eightweek training program for community advocates. • Reached a record-setting 12,191 people through our Commute Challenge, 2,430 of whom were new to commuting by bike. Thanks to encouragement from their teammates and captains, each of these people has reduced carbon emissions and created a foundation for healthy, environmentally-friendly habits for years to come. • Brought our bike safety and skills programs to 25,000 kids and teens. Basics of Bicycling, an in-school, on-bike program that introduces elementary- and middle-school students to the joy and freedom of bicycling and teaches them to ride safely. • Introduced nearly 400 disadvantaged urban kids to the joy and freedom of mountain biking through our Trips for Kids Seattle program.
• Brought bicycling to 170 kids in four south King County high schools through our Major Taylor Project after-school bicycling clubs. We held our first Major Taylor youth leadership retreat, and 30 kids celebrated the end of the school year by riding 205 miles to Portland with the 2012 Group Health STP. • Helped the City of Seattle draft a revolutionary Bicycle Master Plan update that incorporates feedback from Cascade members, elected officials, business executives and community leaders and reflects the very best in bicycle-friendly transportation planning. • Led campaigns for bicycling and walking infrastructure, including a successful campaign for significant bicycling and walking improvements around the Northgate light rail station, which led to more $20 million in committed investments by Sound Transit and the City of Seattle. We couldn’t have done this work without the generous support of our donors. Together, we’ll continue creating a better world for our children in 2013 and beyond. Thank you!
“I signed up for Cascade’s Advocacy Leadership Institute because I retired in May and wanted to do everything possible to advocate for bicycling for transportation. Once I graduated, I was able to combine my passions for bicycling and healthcare to spearhead a new initiative called Safe Routes to Health, engaging hospitals in making sure patients, visitors and staff can safely and easily walk, bike and take transit to healthcare facilities. Thanks to Cascade, I was able to define my goals and develop the skills and connections I needed to reach them.” MERLIN RAINWATER, ADVOCACY LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE PARTICIPANT, SAFE ROUTES TO HEALTH

Cascade Bicycle Club Education Foundation is the 501(c)3 foundation conducting charitable work for Cascade Bicycle Club, a 501(c)4 non-profit organization with 15,000 members, founded in 1970. The Foundation was established in 2001 to support the expansion of Cascade Bicycle Club’s education and advocacy programs. By teaching people to ride safely and ensuring their communities are connected by safe, convenient bicycling routes, our programs reduce pollution, improve individual health, inspire citizen engagement and create sustainable communities. Vision: We envision a community that bicycles – an inclusive, diverse and accepting community where people of all ages and backgrounds bicycle to work, to get around, and for fun and for health, and where bicycling brings people and neighborhoods together. Bicycling will be convenient and safe, connected by a world- class bicycling infrastructure and widely recognized and appreciated as an important contributor to a healthy and fun life and a prosperous and livable community.
