Safety and Workers’ Compensation Basic Medic First Aid®/AED

Reasonable Suspicion Training

Participants who complete this workshop will receive a successful certification card in CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) and first aid. The program meets OSHA requirements for the states of Oregon and Washington.

In this 2-hour workshop participants will receive training on the signs and symptoms of drug use and the signs and symptoms of alcohol misuse. This training certifies that supervisors have received the qualified training to make conscious decisions and documentation regarding reasonable suspicion for drug and alcohol testing.

This workshop will include training in basic skills: ■ SETUP and Barriers ■ Assess Responsiveness ■ Opening Airway ■ Foreign Body Airway Obstruction ■ One-Rescuer CPR ■ Chain of Survival ■ Formal & Informal Debriefing ■ Control of Bleeding ■ Shock Management ■ Ongoing Assessment

Managers’ Roles in Guiding Change Change involves risk. It can be a wise change that dies from lack of commitment or an unwise change that lives due to lack of open dialog. Learn the primary reasons change fails and change succeeds. Gain a chart on the six dimensions of earning employee commitment to change and specifics on the three stages of transition.

“It isn’t fair! Why do our external customers always come first?” If you’ve heard this comment recently, it may be time to revisit operational priorities, and survey internal customer concerns.

About the Presenters Patrice Altenhofen, President Cascade Employers Association Patrice was appointed President in the fall of 2006 and carries forward Cascade's reputation for providing collaborative, responsive, and solution-oriented services. Prior to becoming President, Patrice served as General Counsel and Director of Human Resource Development Services. As a creative and approachable human resource professional and attorney, Patrice is credited with developing innovative training programs on a variety of employment-related issues for executives, managers, and supervisors, including the Association's comprehensive HR Leadership Pogram. She routinely participates in the development of long-term human resource and compliance strategies with top-level management of organizations from diverse industries.

Jean Bonifas, M.A., Speaking Coach and Communication Consultant Springboard NW LLC As the owner and visionary behind Springboard Northwest, Jean brings to her coaching 30 years of experience as a professional communicator. She is equally a performance artist and a businessperson who has the unique ability to foster self-confidence and empower others to step into their creative potential. Jean holds a bachelor of arts degree in children's theatre from the University of Washington and a master's in speech communication from Western Washington University. Jerry E. Bumgarner, CCP, Director of Research and Compensation Services Cascade Employers Association Jerry has devoted more than 40 years to the field of human resources, specializing in the compensation area. He provides specialized compensation support to employers (e.g., market pay ranges, competitive pay assessments, incentive plans, performance management), and helps Cascade members to align pay with business results. In addition, Jerry conducts compensation surveys for numerous industry groups and serves as a participant on national survey steering committees. A regular presenter for workshops on the above topics, Jerry also serves with various local, regional and national professional HR groups.

Glen Fahs, Ph.D., Director of Training and Organization Development Cascade Employers Association Glen is one of Oregon's most active management trainers and consultants. He is a change agent who uses training and involvement processes as ways to build skills, commitment and team work. He teaches classes on leadership and professional transitions regularly for Portland State University and has served on the local boards of United Way, Habitat for Humanity, The Oregon Ethics Commons (as President), and The American Society for Training and Development (as Oregon Chapter President). About the Presenters (continued) Curtis Farmer, Retirement Program Manager Cascade Employers Association Curtis joined Cascade in March of 2008. His principal responsibilities include management and administration of the retirement plans offered to Cascade Members through the Pacific Northwest Employers Pension Trust and the Pacific Northwest Employers Profit Sharing and 401(k) Savings Plan. Prior to joining Cascade, Curtis spent nearly 12 years in the Financial Services industry specializing in Retirement Plans, and currently consults with our members on such issues as plan design, ERISA regulations, and effective employee enrollment and education.

Gayle Klampe, Director of Member Relations Cascade Employers Association Over 30 years at Cascade, Gayle has been involved in a variety of Association capacities.

With her experience and knowledge of Association services, and her ability to communicate the value of membership, she serves as Director of Member Relations. In this role, Gayle oversees all membership activities. She instinctively assesses the needs of employers, linking them to the resources that help advance workplace success. Gayle also manages coordination and development of Association marketing and communication activities, and has a contagious sense of humor.

Lynn Morris, PHR, Human Resource and Compensation Consultant Cascade Employers Association Lynn joined Cascade's Human Resource Development Team in 2003 as a Human Resource and Compensation Consultant. She is a graduate of the University of Oregon where she received her Master degree in Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations. Before coming to Cascade, Lynn's background includes nearly 10 years of experience in many areas of human resources, especially policy research and development, recruitment and selection, compensation analysis, and affirmative action. As a consultant for Cascade, Lynn works in the areas of affirmative action, handbook review and development, and compensation, and provides on-site support for specific projects or when an interim HR manager is needed.

Rob Russell, Principal Russell Consulting Rob is the principal of Russell Consulting, a Portland-based company specializing in designing and presenting training programs to increase individual and group effectiveness.

Before starting his consulting practice in 1984, Rob was a manager in manufacturing, retail and banking organizations for over 20 years. As a consultant he has developed and presented programs on a wide variety of topics in leadership, HR management, conflict resolution and other areas in the human relations field. Clients include American Airlines, Anheuser-Busch, Nike, Tri-Met and Sea World. He has worked with organizations in 20 states and six foreign countries.

Michelle Toney, Human Resource Consultant Cascade Employers Association Michelle joined Cascade as Human Resource Consultant in February 2009. As a consultant for Cascade, Michelle provides practical solutions to HR issues in areas including human resource program assessments, handbook development, job description development, and payroll inquiries. Michelle's experience includes roles as a Bookkeeper, Controller, and Human Resource Manager. In 2005, Michelle earned her certificate in HR leadership through Cascade's Human Resource Leadership Certificate Program, and is currently working towards her transfer degree in Business at Linn-Benton Community College. She is an Oregon native, and is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management.

Salvador Zamudio, Consultant Applied Growth Transitions Salvador Z. Zamudio has a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Leadership and Development and is currently working on his Executive MBA at George Fox University.

Bilingual in English and Spanish, Salvador has a cumulative, progressive background in international motivational public speaking, cultural awareness, training and development, translation/interpretation, and recruiting. How Top Management Can Support Training

How do we ensure that we get maximum bang for our training investment? It takes leadership, preferably leadership from the top. But don’t let it stop you if the CEO or President is not interested. We can manage upward to make sure that learning is tied to organizational priorities and that it gets more than lip service from the powers that be.

Training that is not well managed and tied to strategic objectives is more like education – valuable but not immediately powerful and well aligned. So when planning training, we need to know the strategic plan (if there is one – and there should be!) and what changes supervisors, managers and executives will reinforce.

We need to coach higher level managers in what they can contribute, such as: ■

Clearly articulated values and goals related to learning and continuous improvement.

■

Visible and practical reminders about how learning is valued, such as photos of classes on the wall with an explanation of participants’ growth areas, along with training records in personnel files that are reviewed at performance appraisal time.

■

Succession planning that helps key people develop readiness for higher levels of responsibility.

■

Requiring reports on what their teams are learning and how they are acting on that learning.

■

A healthy budget for staff development.

■

Linking accountability to goals and learning.

■

Participation with others in training; i.e., leading/learning by example.
