Reversing the Culture of Entitlement

Recognition Techniques and Programs Free to those enrolled in HR Leadership Most organizations make major mistakes in their recognition programs that undermine commitment and teamwork. Giving positive recognition is both a skill and an art, but most of all it is a commitment. In this workshop, we will explore what leaders and organizations do poorly and do well - the do’s and don’ts of praise and showing appreciation.

Many employees feel entitled to job opportunities, benefits and a host of other matters that are provided at the discretion of employers. With experts who know how to communicate and handle changes, we will review: 1. The causes of entitlement attitudes 2. How to educate employees about benefits and other forms of compensation 3. How to help both young employees and those with seniority realize that they must continually earn their opportunities

We will also: ■ Share best experiences with spontaneous and organized recognition ■ Learn what the research says about how often recognition is needed and what impact it has ■ Receive written descriptions of both key actions and the top ten creative ways Oregon organizations recognize good work.

We will share case studies and specifics on positive approaches to improving accountability and changing risky entitlement expectations to attitudes based on appreciation, understanding and commitment to high standards.

Be Strong(er) The single best predictor of a consistently high-performing team is the answer to this question: “At work, do you have the opportunity to do what you do best every day?” At a time when organizations are trying to do more with fewer people, it’s critical to engage each person’s strengths, and do it at scale across the organization. The strengths movement isn’t about making people happier; it’s about making organizations more productive. It’s about yield. The best companies are made up of great teams. And those teams have individuals who know their strengths, take them seriously and offer them up to the organization. They’re more profitable, more productive, less likely to quit, less likely to have accidents on the job…the list goes on. Strengths Essentials is a program from The Marcus Buckingham Company (tmbc.com), designed to guide participants through a step by step process to identify and leverage their individual strengths. Patrice Altenhofen, President of Cascade Employers Association, is a Strengths Essentials Facilitator. CONTENT OUTLINE Why Strengths? Learn the research that demonstrates why playing to your Strengths will enable you to be your most productive. Myths & Truths Discuss the challenges associated with implementing a Strengths-based approach and how to overcome them. Identifying Your Strengths Explore the 4 SIGNs of a Strength and learn the process for identifying your unique Strengths. Professional Development What are the Seven Dimensions of Productivity?

Proactive Listening Proactive means initiating rather than waiting. Listening means more than just hearing the words. It involves understanding what matters to others, helping them learn and following up on requests. Listening actively demonstrates leaders care about individuals and value their input. It is the #1 skill needed for an effective relationship and a productive team.

What does it mean to be productive and how do you get there? In this workshop, you can learn about how to connect your actions to your aspirations, get the right results, and achieve your goals using seven key dimensions of productivity. In addition, you’ll get acquainted with a powerful self-assessment tool that will help you rate your performance along each dimension.

This program reviews: 1. The skills and commitment required for effective listening, 2. Common distractions - and how to prevent and manage them, and 3. How you and your co-workers can improve communication at work and at home.

By the end of this workshop, you will: ■ Understand the seven key dimensions of personal productivity: » Time Management » Attention and Focus » Organization » Reliability » Results » Strategy » Fulfillment and Satisfaction ■ Get a new perspective on connecting aspirations to actions ■ Know how to use the self-assessment tool to determine your performance or progress in each of the seven dimensions

New ‘How-To’ Series Do you ever say to yourself, “I wish I knew how to...?” If so, this series is for you. Delivered via Webinar, these sessions are designed to be short and to the point, giving you exactly what you need. Not only will you learn the process of ‘how-to’, you will also get the tools (forms and policies) you need to do so at your workplace. The most recent topic in the series is: ■ How To: Determine if You Have an Independent Contractor or Employee “It would be so much easier to have contractors instead of employees, wouldn’t it?” Remember, just because you call them an independent contractor doesn’t mean they are under the law. The State of Oregon and the IRS are not that flexible and have specific requirements for these classifications. In this how-to Webinar, we go through the tests you need to do to determine if your contractors are really employees. This invaluable session will help your business prevent costly misclassifications and penalties and help you gain a better understanding of the independent contractor versus employee relationship. Training, Teamwork and Organizational Change By Glen Fahs, PhD, Training & Organization Development Consultant Cascade Employers Association

Training has marginal impact unless it is integrated with management priorities and organizational change. A shared set of problems to solve - with dire consequences if they aren’t solved - can galvanize effort and motivate creativity. I once worked for an agency with several hundred employees. The agency decided to merge three offices from different locations into a reduced space within one building. Each agency had different cultures but a similar purpose: evaluating insurance claims. One was very strict and proper, with little tolerance for humor. Another was flexible and playful. The third was less organized but committed to results. None of them wanted to move in with the others, but weren‘t given a choice. In the Training Department, the closer I looked the more problems I saw, including: ■ Resentment for being forced into a “foreign culture” (e.g., a strict headquarters mentality); ■ Reduced space and private offices replaced by cubicles; ■ Lack of rapport between co-workers. My solution: teamwork training with all the problems faced head-on. We divided the 100 or so merging workers into seven new groups, held the training off site with lunch provided, trained on team skills in the morning, and addressed the merger in the afternoon. The morning was fun, the afternoon got serious. After a short discussion of the advantages of the merger, we asked participants to brainstorm the real and potential problems. It was a long list. Then we brainstormed solutions and asked who was willing My solution: teamwork training with to champion any of those solutions. Small teams were all the problems faced head-on. formed to address such things as communication about the move; moving furniture (there was only one elevator); convincing IT to keep computers working until Friday afternoon and to bring them back up promptly on Monday morning (IT first said, “Impossible!”); and, recognition for contributors (that included a celebratory party on the first day in the new facility). The participants used their skills beautifully. They were challenged, appreciated and applying their learning to meaningful work. Not only did the move occur like clockwork, but the new co-workers treated each other as long-lost friends. They were proud of their new digs and of what they made happen. Even a year after, productivity and morale were higher than ever. That was training at its best!
