15 Bridges

Portland is home to 15 bridges that connect the area’s diverse neighborhoods to one another. Twelve cross over the Willamette River, and three span the Columbia River to Southwest Washington.

The Portland area is a cultural, business, and recreational hub. The city’s 15 bridges each have a distinct design, much like the diverse cultures that make up the population here. The St. Johns Bridge, completed in 1931, is the only suspension bridge in the Willamette Valley. The Tilikum Crossing is the city’s newest and is the only one of its kind in the country. Known as the “Bridge of the People,” no cars or trucks are allowed. Only trains, buses, streetcars, cyclists, and pedestrians can cross it.

The 15 bridges make up the visionary infrastructure that literally brings people together. The cultural interaction here naturally produces an upbeat vibe best described by the city’s most popular slogan, “Keep Portland Weird.”

Housing more than 2.5 million people, the Portland metro area is the largest urban area in Oregon. This diverse region integrates the beauty of the surrounding area and the population’s love for the outdoors with excellent schools, an enterprising business district, and abundant cultural and artistic offerings to its inhabitants. There are 94 neighborhoods to experience, each with its own unique character.

Our Portland Communities

1. ALAMEDA

Located in the heart of northeast Portland, this classic neighborhood is filled with beautiful tree-lined streets, parks, and historic homes and buildings. Many of the homes were built in the early 1900s Craftsman-style, so they boast history along with classic details. Here you will find homes on large lots (many over an acre) with sizeable square footage and multiple bedrooms and bathrooms. Homes in the neighborhood tend to be luxurious, ranging from $500,000 to more than a million dollars. Large lots and locations close to downtown successfully combine a familyfriendly feel with the conveniences of city living.

Alameda borders the vibrant Hollywood District and Beaumont Village, giving residents a multitude of restaurants, cafes, boutiques, art galleries, and culture to choose from. Views of downtown, the Willamette River, and the Cascades, provide a beautiful backdrop to the well-cared for homes, schools, and neighborhood parks. Residents of the area enjoy nearby Wilshire Park, which is more than 14 acres of playground, open forest, grassy stretches, and paths. Fernhill Park and Grant Park are also nearby.

2. ALBERTA ARTS DISTRICT

As the name denotes, the Alberta Arts District is known for its vibrant and diverse arts scene. Along Northeast Alberta Street you will find galleries, murals, boutiques, and a wide range of bars

and restaurants. On the last Thursday of every month, Alberta transforms into a vibrant and iconic street fair featuring food, live music, local vendors, dancing, crafts, shopping, and more. The event was held virtually during the height of the pandemic but has returned to the neighborhood.

The homes in the area range from quaint bungalows to larger Craftsman-style homes, offering traditional living and dining rooms with classic detailing. Beautiful yards, original hardwood floors, finished basements, and updated kitchens are common amenities in the neighborhood. This area embodies the quintessential “Keep Portland Weird” feel the city is known for, along with excellent walkability, a multitude of dining options, parks, and beautiful homes.

3. ALOHA

Located between Beaverton and Hillsboro, Aloha (pronounced “a-LOW-ah”) is an unincorporated community in Washington County. Here you will find many young professionals and families thanks to Intel’s Aloha Campus. The city is also home to several restaurants, coffee shops, parks, a community-centered pub, and a 26-foot-tall fiberglass statue named Harvey the Rabbit. The giant rabbit has been greeting road trippers outside Aloha’s Harvey Marine boat repair shop since the 1960s and continues to attract visitors. The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club, one of the most prestigious golf courses in the area, is also located here.

4. ALPHABET DISTRICT

Portland’s Alphabet District earned its charming appellation from the alphabetical progression of its east-west streets (for example Davis, Everett, Flanders, Glisan, and Hoyt). It is located in Northwest Portland, close to the Pearl District and downtown. Although an estimate of its actual boundaries is rough, most people consider the Alphabet District to be hemmed in by 17th and 24th streets in one direction and Burnside and Marshall in the other. Some of the city’s best shopping can be found along Northwest 21st and Northwest 23rd, which are lined with numerous boutiques, shops, and independent establishments.

The neighborhood is a mix of large Victorian homes, Craftsman bungalows, brick apartment buildings, condos, and walk-up townhomes. 5. BEAVERTON

A thriving city in the Portland Metro area, Beaverton sits in the scenic Tualatin Valley, surrounded by natural landscapes of woodlands, open-range grasslands, and beautiful waterways. For those who love outdoor recreation, the city has more than 100 parks, 30 miles of hiking trails, and numerous bike paths. Suburban comforts and big-city amenities abound in Beaverton, making it a perfect location for many. Beaverton is Oregon’s sixth-largest city and the secondlargest incorporated city in Washington County.

Like many cities, technology has introduced changes in lifestyle to Beaverton which was once dependent on the forest industry. 6. BETHANY

Named one of the best suburbs in Oregon, Bethany is a small community just 11 miles northwest of Portland. The city is known for its highly rated public schools, beautiful homes, and many parks, including the 42-acre Bethany Lake Park. 7. CEDAR HILLS

Named for the cedar forest that grew in the area, Cedar Hills is a community of less than 10,000 people in unincorporated Washington County. The neighborhood is close to good schools, dozens of parks, shopping, and a variety of recreational activities. Cedar Hills Crossing offers residents more than 70 shops and restaurants to choose from. Walkers and bikers will enjoy the 20acre Commonwealth Lake Park that surrounds the man-made Commonwealth Lake. It is also home to the Cedar Hills Recreation Center, which offers group fitness classes, after school programs, and activities for people of all ages.

8. CEDAR MILL

A suburb of Portland, Cedar Mill is a mostly residential community in unincorporated Washington County. Residents enjoy easy access to several shops, restaurants, nature trails, and parks in the area.

The community hosts an annual festival to celebrate the neighborhood’s history with food vendors, cultural and craft booths, fresh cider, live music, and local entertainment. The public schools here are also highly rated, making it a perfect place for young families.

9. CONCORDIA

Named for the former Concordia University, which sits within its boundaries, the Concordia neighborhood is in the city’s Northeast quadrant. Bordered by Vernon, Woodland, Cully, Alameda, Beaumont-Wilshire and more, the area is filled with plenty of shopping, dining, and culture. The neighborhood is also home to one of Portland’s more notable attractions, McMenamins Kennedy School. The historic elementary school has been transformed into a unique hotel with a restaurant, brewery, soaking pool, and movie theater, offering neighborhood residents and visitors alike numerous places to relax and enjoy a pint.

Homes here are lovely and somewhat upscale, like many of the surrounding neighborhoods. The many city parks nearby contain open green spaces, walking trails, water features, and manicured gardens, all perfect for a date, family outing, or study spot. This neighborhood also contains the smaller Alberta Arts District, a main cultural hub centering on Alberta Street. A popular residential destination for the earthy and the yuppie, the young and the edgy, Alberta embraces one of Portland’s most colorful and interesting cultural scenes.

10. DIVISION-CLINTON

With trendy shops, restaurants, and cafes as far as the eye can see, Division-Clinton sums up what Portland is known for throughout the country. Considered one of the city’s most stylish neighborhoods, southeast Division-Clinton lets you become a part of it all. The neighborhood is packed with incredible restaurants featuring a variety of cuisines.

Dunthorpe is an affluent neighborhood located just south of Portland, near Lake Oswego. Bordered by the Willamette River, the Dunthorpe community is known for large, elegant homes and wildlife areas. With half of Dunthorpe belonging to Clackamas County and the other half to Multnomah County, its properties are zoned to mandate half-acre lot sizes at a minimum. Area highlights include Lewis & Clark College, as well as the gorgeous Tryon Creek State Natural Area. A state park, Tryon Creek boasts miles of wilderness trails for hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders. It is home to wildlife such as owls, coyotes, brush rabbits, raccoons, and endangered salamanders. Dunthorpe is situated on the Willamette River’s west side and is also home to the Elk Rock Garden at the Bishop’s Close, a 13-acre estate created at the turn of the century by Scottish couple Mr. and Mrs. Peter Kerr. The garden now showcases curated paths, magnolia trees, streams, rock gardens, rhododendrons, and more.

12. EASTMORELAND

Sitting on Portland’s east side near the Willamette River, Eastmoreland is a family-friendly neighborhood filled with larger classic homes, including many in the Tudor and Colonial styles. Prices here vary widely based on square footage, location, lot size, and other amenities. Many of the homes were built in the mid-1900s when the community was developed. Unlike other neighborhoods nearby, Eastmoreland is mainly residential and is blanketed by a canopy of trees, giving it a secluded and serene feeling.

Eastmoreland has a significant history and beautiful public parks, including the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden and Berkeley Park. Other neighborhood attractions include the Eastmoreland Golf Course, which was founded more than a century ago and is open to the public. 13. ELIOT

Spanning North and Northeast Portland, the Eliot neighborhood is roughly hemmed in by the Willamette River to the west, Fremont St. to the north, 7th Avenue to the east, and Broadway St. to the south. It is located right in the middle of the former city of Albina and is a cultural destination for many residents of Portland, who come here to eat, shop, drink, listen to live music, and generally have a good time.

Homes in the area may not be quite as pricey or sprawling as nearby neighborhoods, such as Irvington or Alameda, but they are still quite nice. Often built in the Craftsman-style, homes consist of cottages and bungalows in a range of sizes and square footages. Many yards

are large and showy, with mature landscaping and lovely greenery that graces the old streets.

Residents and visitors have numerous options to choose from when it comes to rest and relaxation. Coffee shops and restaurants abound, making the neighborhood a destination for good eats in Portland. Shops, boutiques, artisanal stores, and music venues line the busier streets, so there is no shortage of things to do here. The Eliot neighborhood also possesses fun cultural destinations, such as old churches and historic homes, for those who appreciate the weight of history. Its central location and proximity to several major freeways, including I-84 and I-5, makes the Eliot neighborhood a great place to live no matter where you work. The downtown strip is especially close by car or public transportation.

14. FOREST HEIGHTS

Named for its high vantage point on top of Portland’s West Hills, Forest Heights has some of the best views the city has to offer. On a clear day, you can see Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Hood, and other far-off Cascade Range beauties from this neighborhood’s many excellent viewing spots.

Homeowners in the area take great pride in their houses and landscaping, which is why they have a homeowners association governed by a board of directors. Homes in the area are a mix of single-family residences, townhomes, and condos. The neighborhood is primarily residential, although it does contain a small retail shopping center as well.

Forest Heights has hundreds of acres of beautiful natural areas perfect for admiring the native vegetation and local wildlife. Seven miles of private trails wind through small parks, glens, forests, and along streets that bespeak the commitment of residents to the beauty of the area. Mill Pond Park also graces the neighborhood, offering additional walking trails, picnic areas with barbecues, fountains, green spaces, playgrounds, and an amphitheater for summer concerts.

Looking for a cultural hit right in town? Check out the International Festival, typically held the Saturday after Labor Day, which exhibits cultures from all over the world and serves up food, drinks, and music in a beautiful setting. Of course, if you miss that true big city feel, downtown Portland is just a short car ride away, but many people appreciate the small-town perks Forest Heights offers to its cozy enclave of residents.

15. GRANT PARK

Another cozy enclave within Portland’s larger community, Grant Park successfully combines family comforts with the classic slightly-hippie, slightly-yuppie, good-kind-of-weird vibe for which Portland is known. It is named for the park at its center that has towering trees, a community garden, a dog park, and nearly 20 acres of walkable green area with well-maintained paths.

Located in the city’s Northeast quadrant and bordered by charming neighborhoods such as Alameda, Irvington, Laurelhurst, and Beaumont-Wilshire, among others, it is home to classic houses and loads of culture. Here you will find mainly Old Portland and Craftsman-style homes that tend to be large and luxurious, much like homes in the surrounding neighborhoods. Extensive classic detailing, spacious lots, and multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, make these homes very desirable. Many houses and buildings in the area have historical significance, becoming destinations of their own.

The neighborhood also boasts a vibrant cultural scene with nearby retail and dining options. The main streets host artisanal fooderies like doughnut shops and breweries, as well as more traditional restaurants and pubs. Art galleries, shopping centers,

and numerous grocery stores are all within walking distance. In search of local produce, dairy, or crafts from the region? Just head over to the nearby Hollywood Farmer’s Market hosted on Saturdays.

There are also many large parks in the neighborhood, with open green spaces for sports and recreational activities, and lots of walking trails that meander through natural areas and out onto busy streets hopping with city life.

Residents take pride in the fact that Grant Park is home to fictional characters Ramona Quimby and Henry Huggins from Beverly Cleary’s famous children’s books. Want a fun historical tour? Stroll down Klickitat Street, the main setting for the books, and imagine yourself back in the 50s.

Gresham is a welcoming community where tradition and heritage meet innovation and opportunity. An ideal city for families, the gorgeous scenery changes with the seasons. Located just minutes from iconic Mount Hood, Multnomah Falls, and the Columbia River Gorge, Gresham is a jumping-off point for adventure seekers and outdoor enthusiasts. The city is also home to the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival, a three-day event featuring world-renowned musicians.

17. HAPPY VALLEY

With the benefits of living close to the city while maintaining the intimacy of a small-town community, Happy Valley strikes a balance that is ideal for its residents. Located just eleven miles to the southeast of Portland, this charming town sits on a hill that allows residents scenic views of Mt. Hood in one direction and Portland’s downtown skyline in the other. As one of the fastest growing cities in Oregon, Happy Valley offers an abundance of opportunities and amenities. The city is home to Oregon’s bustling health care industry, which has brought growth and prosperity to the area.

Happy Valley’s clean air and suburban lifestyle make this an ideal location for families. The Mt. Hood National Forest is just around the corner, as are the Columbia River Gorge, the Cascade Mountains, and the Clackamas River, all popular places among locals for fishing, hiking, biking, and winter sports. The Happy Valley Sculpture Garden is another popular destination in town that promotes art appreciation and culture within the community.

Baseball lovers will enjoy visiting Hillsboro Stadium to watch the city’s minor league baseball team, the Hillsboro Hops.

20. HOLLYWOOD

The crown jewel of this neighborhood and its namesake is the Hollywood Theater. The historic Portland landmark opened along Sandy Boulevard in 1926. It is now surrounded by sleek, modern buildings in a way that showcases the history of Portland and the seamless blending of old and new that makes this city so beautiful. Today, the theater shows classic and contemporary films, hosts theme nights, and has live performances. Take a walk along Sandy and you will find incredible, locally owned shops, vintage stores, cafes, restaurants, and more. On Saturdays, residents visit the Hollywood Farmer’s Market for local produce, dairy, and crafts from the region.

21. IRVINGTON

22. JOHN’S LANDING

Extremely accessible to downtown with an urban neighborhood feel, John’s Landing is popular among young professionals and students. The neighborhood is located in Southwest Portland near the Willamette River, making it a perfect spot for those who want easy access to water sports like kayaking, dragon boating, or waterskiing.

Much of its real estate is comprised of townhomes and condominiums. Neighborhood streets are lined with trees, attractive landscaping, and boast beautiful views of Mount Hood and the Willamette River. Along the river, residents can explore trails perfect for walking and biking. A five-minute drive will bring you into the heart of Downtown Portland. Here, you will find an entertainment hub filled with popular restaurants, shops, event venues, and bars.

23. LAKE OSWEGO

Just south of Portland, Lake Oswego is a beautiful town centered on the 405-acre Oswego Lake. Lake Oswego is a vibrant area with a small-town feel, known for its affluent homes, excellent schools, and golf course. 24. LAURELHURST

Located in Southeast Portland, Laurelhurst is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. It contains many vintage, upscale single-family homes that surround the nearly 27-acre Laurelhurst Park. The park features several sport courts, a playground, an off-leash dog area, and a huge stretch of green space with a pond and trails that wind through the expanse of the park. Many of the homes in the area are grand, with multiple stories and fairytale elements such as towers, extra wings, long front walks, and sprawling porches.

Breaking Portland’s traditional grid pattern of streets, the avenues in this neighborhood wind gently through parks and residential enclaves. The center of the neighborhood is crowned with a golden statue of Joan of Arc, around which winds Coe Circle, a huge traffic circle.

25. MISSISSIPPI

Drawn to its trendy shops, walkability, and food carts, Mississippi is popular among young professionals. As its name indicates, this neighborhood is centered on the long stretch of Mississippi Avenue, bursting with shops and restaurants that routinely make the list of Portland’s best.

A variety of single-family homes, condominiums, and apartments make up the Mississippi area. Bungalows and cottages built in the Craftsmanstyle are common, as are new construction condominiums and modern apartments.

Close to the Moda Center and Downtown Portland, Mississippi is a lively hub of entertainment.

26. MOUNT TABOR

Featuring a popular city park built on an extinct volcano, the neighborhood was named after Mt. Tabor in Israel. Portland’s Mt. Tabor is a volcanic cinder cone rising out of the middle of the city. Mt. Tabor Park is known for its open-air-reservoirs, numerous walking trails, long flights of stairs, grassy stretches, community garden, and spectacular views. The park’s pathways are paved with volcanic cinders found in the park by construction workers in 1912. When the weather is nice, it is the perfect place to enjoy a picnic or sunset with views of the city.

The neighborhood is bounded by 49th Avenue on one end and 76th Avenue on the other. It sits between Division to the south and Burnside to the north. It is bordered by the Sunnyside, Richmond, North Tabor, South Tabor, and Montavilla neighborhoods. Notable for its walkability and proximity to some of Portland’s trendier destinations, such as Division and Hawthorne, Mt. Tabor is home to many younger families and couples. Homes in the area tend to be primarily single-family, although you can find condominiums and apartment complexes.

Coffee shops, hobby stores, secondhand boutiques, tattoo parlors, bars, and pubs are all within reasonable walking or short driving distance. The area is also known for the many food cart pods that adorn Portland’s Southeast quadrant and popular restaurants such as Petite Provence, a renowned eatery.

27. MULTNOMAH VILLAGE

This Southwest Portland neighborhood retains all the charm of a historic seaside hamlet, despite being more than a hundred miles inland. Rambling houses have been transformed into pubs, restaurants, bookshops, import stores, clothing boutiques, jewelry shops, coffee joints, and more, making the village a recreator’s dream. The wide streets have plenty of parking for day-trippers, as well as wide sidewalks for gentle strolls after brunch or between shops. Off the main stretch along Capitol Highway, gardens tend to be well manicured, and the streets are lined with trees. Residents also enjoy nearby Gabriel Park, which has several sports fields, a large skatepark, walking paths, and picnic areas.

Real estate does not typically move rapidly in Multnomah Village, as many of the people who live here are devoted residents who remain in place over the long haul. Homes are usually nice, but not overwhelmingly luxurious, with prices ranging depending on lot size, square footage, and amenities. The median list price for a home in this neighborhood is more than half a million dollars.

Homes close to the strip are very walkable, within reach of both cultural destinations and delicious eateries. Those a little farther from the main thoroughfare are still very well located. Multnomah Village is just a short drive from grocery stores in nearby suburb Tigard, bustling larger destinations along Barbur Boulevard, big-city attractions in downtown Portland, and Hillsdale, another Southwest Portland neighborhood.

28. NOB HILL

An affluent neighborhood in Northwest Portland, Nob Hill offers its residents a combination of fine dining, bistros, and designer stores. The neighborhood is also conveniently located near Forest Park, which has 70 miles of trails, perfect for long walks and bike rides, as well as the historic Pittock Mansion, a 22-room house that offers beautiful views of the city and a unique look at Portland’s history. Considered one of the more family-oriented parts of Portland, this neighborhood is known as a safe community that fosters a friendly, welcoming attitude.

29. NORTH PLAINS

On the outskirts of Portland, this community is affectionately known as “the city to the sunset.” North Plains is a charming and quaint, semi-rural city about 19 miles outside of Portland. Here you will find large parcels of land available, old farmhouses, and custom new builds. This interconnected community has a family-oriented feel and features several small parks throughout town. The city is also widely recognized as home to one of Oregon’s most prestigious golf courses, Pumpkin Ridge, which was the site of the 1996 U.S. Amateur Tournament won by Tiger Woods.

30. OREGON CITY

Nestled among steep hills and bluffs just 15 miles southeast of Portland, Oregon City offers beautiful landscapes, historical landmarks, museums, and an abundance of recreational opportunities. The refuge is a habitat for protected wildlife and more than 175 bird species, making it the perfect spot for bird watching. This family-friendly neighborhood is also home to Oaks Amusement Park, which is one of the oldest continually operating amusement parks in the country.

The area is one of the oldest in Portland, dating back to the 1800s. Sherwood, Oregon is a small residential community located southwest of Portland in the Tualatin Valley. The community centers around Old Town Sherwood, which features historic buildings, galleries, and antique and specialty shops. Old town hosts art festivals, an annual Robin Hood Festival, and the Sherwood Saturday Market from May to September, complete with musical performers and dozens of vendors selling produce, gourmet foods, flowers, and arts and crafts.

The area continues to grow and is now home to seven vineyard-estate wineries, putting it on the map as a wine destination. In addition to the vineyards, Sherwood is also

known for several u-pick and tree farms. If you visit in May, you may also want to check out the annual bird festival hosted by the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge. Up for a hike? The refuge has a 3.1-mile nature trail that is open year-round. The city is also currently developing a regional three-part trail system called the Cedar Creek Trail.

Perfect for young and growing families, Sherwood contains several schools and a wealth of single-family homes in different styles, lot sizes, and square footages. Portland’s South Waterfront is characterized by luxury and beauty. 35. ST. HELENS

Once a popular shipping port, the town of St. Helens sits along 60 miles of the Columbia River and boasts sweeping views of Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens. From kayaking to fishing to hiking, the area offers plenty of outdoor activities and is just 30 miles northwest of Portland. Quaint and charming, Old Town is a registered historic district and is a well-traveled destination for those seeking quiet and solitude, along with the stunning landscape. The downtown area is filled with galleries, antiques, coffee houses, and charming boutique shops. The 1998 movie Halloweentown was filmed here and continues to draw visitors every October as the town transforms into “The Spirit of Halloweentown,” complete with costume contests, spooky decorations, haunted tours, and trick-or-treating

through the Old Town District. Real estate offerings here include a variety of waterfront properties, farms and ranches, single-family homes, condos, and townhomes.

36. ST. JOHNS

The community of St. Johns is located at the northern tip of where the Columbia River and Willamette River converge. It sits on the northwest end of the beautiful St. Johns bridge. Located in Southwest Portland, the West Hills area is one of affluence and beauty. While the name is sometimes broadened to include the neighborhoods of Arlington Heights, Forest Park, and Portland Heights, generally it refers simply to the Southwest Hills alone. This region contains both upscale homes on larger lots, as well as smaller, single-family residences and condominiums. Multnomah Village, a micro-neighborhood situated within the West Hills, offers a charming escape from the bustling city with smaller stretches of shopping and dining options.

39. WEST LINN

West Linn is located between the Willamette and Tualatin Rivers and is largely residential. Desirable properties, including

41. WILSONVILLE

A town of rolling farmland, beautifully appointed estates, tree-lined boulevards, and small areas of urban development, Wilsonville is the perfect suburb for young families, older couples, and citydwellers looking for that backcountry feel. Located in Clackamas and Washington Counties, the town was incorporated from the original hamlet of Boone’s Landing, from which Boones Ferry (one of the region’s longest and best-known streets) gets its name. 5. FISHER’S LANDING

Originally named Fisher for Solomon W. Fisher, who filed a land claim in the early 1850s, this small community was later named Fisher’s Landing due to the thriving docks that anchor it. Now home to the bustling Tech Center, the area is known for thriving businesses with large employers such as Hewlett Packard, Sharp, and Nautilus occupying the district. This mixed-use community boasts expansive views of Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens, as well as access to Vancouver Lake Regional Park which is 190 acres and stretches for 2.5 miles along the western shore of Vancouver Lake.

6. IIWACO

Ilwaco is a small town nestled at the southern edge of the Long Beach Peninsula, on the Washington side of the Columbia River, right at Baker Bay. The city was founded in 1890 and has since been steeped in the history of the Pacific Northwest. All around Ilwaco, you can find places to appreciate that history, whether it be natural or man-made. These attractions include lighthouses, forts, museums, and even hiking trails that were first blazed by early explorers charting the territory. Whatever you do in Ilwaco, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to learn about the deep and unique culture of this amazing land.

7. LONG BEACH

Long Beach might be the most aptly named city you’ll come across. The city stretches out along two to three miles of the Washington coastline and is known for its beach and boardwalk along the also aptly named Long Beach Peninsula. The nearby waters are known for having an incredible catch of seafood, including the largest salmon run in the world. The explorers Lewis and Clark first came through Long Beach in 1806 and since then the area has attracted people from across the country who are eager to experience the wonderful natural attractions that Long Beach has to offer. From the beach and peninsula to the nearby wetlands and forests, Long Beach will keep you coming back for more.

Longview is situated between Seattle, Washington, and Portland, Oregon, offering residents a rural lifestyle with year-round opportunities for recreation. It is the largest city in Cowlitz County with a population of approximately 36,000 people. Located ninety miles from the Pacific Ocean at the confluence of the Cowlitz and Columbia Rivers, Longview is a relatively new city with a short but remarkable history. Less than seventy-five years ago, the area where Longview now stands was sparsely populated wilderness and rural homesteads.

Built in the 1920s, Longview has a small-town atmosphere that is very appealing to residents and visitors alike, offering a safe, comfortable, and inviting gathering place with shopping, restaurants, galleries, and beautiful streetscapes. Lake Sacajawea Park, the city’s crown jewel, features numerous trails and puts Longview on the “Top 10 Gardens to Inspire” list. Cultural events vary from performances at the Columbia Theatre to walking tours through the historic downtown. Its manufacturing base remains strong due to its production and supply of lumber products.

9. OCEAN PARK

Ocean Park is a tight-knit community located about halfway up the Long Beach Peninsula on the coast of Washington. This is a unique little place that combines small-town coastal culture with amenities that you’d expect to find at a resort. Ocean Park’s main attraction is the Surfside Golf Course. If you have ever dreamed about spending your morning on the green while taking in the salty ocean air, Ocean Park is a must add to your bucket list.

10. RIDGEFIELD

Ridgefield, Washington is a diverse community full of activities for all ages. Since the first settler arrived at this location in 1853, people have been drawn to the gently sloping land that extends from the elevated highlands to the Lake River banks. Ridgefield is located in the southwest corner of Washington and is approximately 20 miles north of Portland.

Real estate is on the upward trend in Ridgefield. There are approximately 30 different neighborhoods in the area, all close to downtown for entertainment and activities year-round. The First Saturday celebrations occur each month with festivals and celebrations for the entire family. In August, the river romp

includes activities for your canine family members as well. Local merchants abound in the historic downtown during these events for a farmer’s market, a bluegrass festival, and a wine and chocolate festival.

The Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge is an excellent spot to visit and support the native wildlife. Here, fishing, boating, and a historic walking tour can be enjoyed. The area also boasts a large community garden to mingle with other residents in the area and participate in collaborative gardening.

11. SALMON CREEK

Salmon Creek is a suburban neighborhood located north of Portland and Vancouver with almost 20,000 residents. The community was originally named for the creek of the same name, which runs throughout the entire community. At one time salmon filled the creek and the fish population was so high that farmers would use them as fertilizer for the fruit trees in the area.

Nowadays, Salmon Creek is best known for its peaceful setting which includes beautiful mountain views and landscapes. The area is an in-demand suburban hub because of its picturesque location. When it comes to the day-to-day living in Salmon Creek, residents enjoy exploring Salmon Creek Park. The park offers 368 acres of parkland and trails, as well as shopping and dining in many of the local hotspots.

12. OYSTERVILLE

Oysterville was founded as a small village when Chinook Chief Nahcati introduced the town’s founders, R.H. Espy and I.A. Clark, to a certain mollusk. After becoming some of the biggest oyster enthusiasts around, the founders decided to name their new settlement Oysterville, after their chief export. Since then, the town has existed in what seems like a time capsule. A walk through downtown Oysterville will seem like a walk through the mid-1800s. With amazing history and food so good they named the town after it, Oysterville is a perfect getaway destination.

13. SEAVIEW

Another small and historic town on the Long Beach Peninsula, Seaview is a destination for surfers everywhere. Donning a wetsuit will allow you to explore the expansive coastline from the exciting view atop a surfboard. When you’re back on dry land, be sure to grab a beer and explore the downtown area, which has been

preserved in a way that has maintained the town’s antiquity and history. Whether you explore from on top of a board or from the seat of a car, Seaview has something for you.

14. VANCOUVER

Vancouver, Washington is a wonderful city that lies on the northern bank of the wide Columbia River, close to where it joins the Willamette River. Founded in 1857, the city is part of the Portland-Vancouver metro area. Known as a progressive and modern community, many of those who live in Vancouver work in the technology sector.

With its scenic location by the river, wooded hills, and generally mild climate, water sports and outdoor activities are very popular in Vancouver. Fishing, boating, hiking, and bike riding are avidly pursued along the many trails and waterfront access parks. Numerous neighborhoods and small communities spread out south and east of the city, and upscale homes are nestled into the hills to the west. Vancouver gives residents opportunities for urban living or a small-town atmosphere outside of the metro area with convenient access to the city. Take a stroll along the newly developed Vancouver Waterfront and you will find a number of restaurants, wineries, and shops to choose from.

It’s Gorges Outside:

Big city thrills are all good and well, and in that department, Portland is no slouch. But after walking among the bricks and concrete, the hustle and bustle, and the endless people watching, the soul can use a little cleansing by way of communing with nature.

Not to be ignored are the many species of birds that inhabit this part of the country. COMMON MURE

This is the state’s most abundant nesting seabird. Each spring, more than 700,000 of them gather on the Oregon Coast to breed. Colonies made of tens of thousands of individuals make their homes on rocks and cliff ledges to raise their chicks. Head to the small island of aptly named Colony Rock at Yaquina Head. You can’t help but be astounded at the sheer number of murres; over 50,000 cover every inch of exposed flat rock there is.

TUFTED PUFFIN

If the mure is the most common shore bird, the tufted puffin is certainly the most popular. These colorful “parrots of the sea” attract many tourists and nature lovers to the coast. And it’s no wonder, with their jet-black bodies, bold white “facemasks,” head plumes, and bright orange beaks, they’re one of the most photogenic birds in the Pacific Northwest. Puffins return each year to a few wellknown nesting places such as Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach, Face Rock in Bandon, and Goat Island at Harris Beach State Park.

BLACK OYSTERCATCHER

Nesting just above the high tide line, oystercatchers can be seen nosing around the rocky shoreline in search of a meal. They have pink legs, brown bodies, black heads, orange-red bills, and striking yellow eyes ringed with red.

PIGEON GUILLEMOT

Although it may look like a pigeon — hence its name — the pigeon guillemot is more closely related to the puffin family. They’re quite easy to identify because of their bright red legs and feet, black bodies, and white patches on their wings. They make their nests in crevices of rocks and can dive underwater to a depth of almost 150 feet for food. You can find them on the west coast of North America from Alaska to Southern California. If you want to get a better look at these birds in Oregon, try Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach, Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, and Seal Rock State Recreation Site.

BROWN PELICAN

Looking like something flying right out of Jurassic Park, brown pelicans are as entertaining in the air as they are on the ground. Instead of being permanent residents, these large seabirds often spend their summers in Oregon after breeding in Mexico and California. They’re easily identified by their long bills and throat pouches, and a group of pelicans flying in formation overhead is truly a sight to behold. An adult pelican can weigh up to 11 pounds and have a wingspan of more than 6 feet.

CORMORANTS

There are three species of cormorants found on the Oregon Coast — the double-crested cormorant, pelagic cormorant, and Brandt’s cormorant. Although their coloring and size differ slightly, they all have the same distinctive body shape. Cormorants’ plumage isn’t waterproof, which makes it easier for them to dive for fish. After a hearty meal they can often be seen standing on rocks and dock pilings drying their outstretched wings in the sun. Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, Heceta Head State Scenic Viewpoint, Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach, and Coquille Point are all good places to spot cormorants.

PLOVERS

Among the feathered friends of Oregon’s shores are several species of plovers, including the black-bellied plover, American golden plover, Pacific golden plover, western snowy plover, and semipalmated plover. Each species has its own distinctive coloring and markings, and they can be found in habitats ranging from mudflats to grassy plains to sandy beaches.

SANDPIPERS

If you see a small bird running comically near the ocean surf, chasing receding waves to see if a small meal was left behind and then running away from the next wave as it comes in, you’re enjoying the antics of a sandpiper. Many species of sandpiper live up and down the Oregon Coast; some are permanent residents, while others stop by while migrating to Alaska or Central America.

PHALAROPES

Two species of phalaropes can be found around the Oregon Coast — the red-necked phalarope and the red phalarope (another species, Wilson’s phalarope, is found mainly east of the Cascade Mountains). Both are equally adept at riding rough seas and are sometimes seen 20 miles from shore. The red-necked variety is mainly black and white with, as the name suggests, a red-orange ring around its neck. The red phalarope has a beautiful rustcolored breast with black and white wings and a head with a yellow beak.

When visiting the Oregon Coast, be sure to bring your binoculars and — if birding is a passion more than a pastime — your portable telescope and camera with a long lens. You’ll see lots of beautiful and unique shorebirds, and the pictures you take may well be among your favorite souvenirs from the beautiful state of Oregon.

THE BEST WHALE WATCHING LOCATIONS ON THE OREGON COAST

Along with being a veritable cornucopia of natural beauty, the state of Oregon is absolutely bursting with life. Its prairies and forests are home to black bears, coyotes, deer, mountain lions, gray wolves, river otters, and a large variety of both desert birds and shorebirds. The state is also home to a sizeable population of Roosevelt elk, the largest species of elk in North America.

In this amazing and diverse ecosystem, however, the main attraction isn’t found on the land, but in the sea. Oregon’s rugged and beautiful coast gives way to the blue waters of the Pacific, where the spectacle of migrating gray whales brings thousands to the coast each year to catch a glimpse of these gentle giants. While there are multiple companies that offer whale watching boat tours, they come close enough to shore that it’s possible to see them from land. You just have to know where to go…

NEAHKAHNIE MOUNTAIN VIEWPOINT

Part of Oswald West State Park just north of Manzanita, Neahkahnie Mountain is a 1,680-foot coastal peak that is well known for the panoramic views from the top. You can hike to the summit via the Oregon Coast Trail or by accessing the Short Sand South Trailhead near Highway 101. Whale sightings are a pretty sure thing if you’re there at the right time of year. An added bonus is the great view of Manzanita Beach, and if you’re there in the evening, you’ll be treated to a spectacular Oregon sunset.

CAPE MEARES STATE SCENIC VIEWPOINT

Built in 1889, Cape Meares Lighthouse is a picturesque fixture on Oregon’s coast. It’s located about two hours due west of Portland. At this scenic viewpoint, you’ll be 200 feet above the ocean, giving you a perfect vantage point to see the telltale double-plumed spouts of the whales as they slowly swim by.

DEPOE BAY WHALE WATCHING CENTER

There are scores of scenic spots along Oregon’s 360mile Coast, but this is a dedicated place for watching whales, complete with a knowledgeable staff, heated indoor viewing area and plenty of binoculars. It’s one of the top destinations in the state for whale watching. The helpful staff will fill you with all kinds of fascinating info about whales, and since they are extra good at picking them out, they may spot them even when you don’t. Along with gray whales, humpbacks, and orcas, blue whales have been sighted from this location.

ECETA HEAD LIGHTHOUSE STATE SCENIC VIEWPOINT

The Heceta Head Lighthouse is not only the brightest light on the entire Oregon Coast, but it’s also the most photographed lighthouse on the entire U.S. West Coast. The short half-mile hike from the parking lot brings you to the iconic spot, where you can tour the lighthouse and gift shop. The lighthouse sits atop Heceta Head, a dizzying 1,000 feet above the waves below. It goes without saying that this is an ideal spot to see whales out in the water.

CAPE PERPETUA SCENIC AREA

What better place to see whales than from the highest car accessible point on the Oregon Coast? The visitor center is open all year, and helpful staff and exhibits inform about the cultural and natural history of the area. At the highest point, it’s more than 800 feet above sea level, and you can see 70 miles of coastline as well as 37 miles out to sea. A perfect place to spot whales!

Cape Perpetua is about two miles north of Yachats.

BOILER BAY STATE SCENIC VIEWPOINT

This rugged, basalt-rimmed bay is quintessential Oregon Coast, and it’s a great place to do some whale watching. Just one mile north of Depoe Bay, you’ll get a breathtaking panoramic view and, along with whales, it’s one of the best places on the coast to see ocean going birds, such as shearwaters, albatrosses, grebes, loons, oystercatchers, and pelicans. Incidentally, the bay was named after a ship that ran aground, caught fire and exploded in 1910. It is said that the ship’s boiler, still out there in the bay, is visible at low tide.

CAPE BLANCO LIGHTHOUSE

Built in 1870, the Cape Blanco Lighthouse is the oldest one in the state, and it’s located on the westernmost point in Oregon. Perched atop a 245-foot headland, it promises jaw-dropping

views of the coast and ocean — and it’s a perfect place for whale watching. The surrounding park is home to hiking trails, a historic pioneer house built in the 19th century, a small cemetery, a campground, and a horse camp with riding trails.

Cape Blanco is in southern Oregon about 65 miles from the California state line.

Although it’s possible to see whales any day of the year, the whale watching season in Oregon is concurrent with the mammals’ biannual migrations, which peak in winter (midDecember to mid-January) and spring (late February to May).

As many as 20,000 whales pass the Oregon Coast during these times. Be sure to build some time into your schedule to see these amazing creatures. It’s one of the most memorable experiences you can have in the beautiful state of Oregon!
