by numbers like 122 and 755 in the minds of sport fans, but in the hearts of the lives they have impacted with their philanthropic work, numbers such as humanitarian operations in 34 countries and $100,000 in scholarships to Clark Atlanta University are paramount. As the Chairman of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, Edwin Moses uses the same competitive spirit that pushed him to 122 consecutive race victories to overcome global obstacles like poverty, drug abuse, and AIDS. It is Moses’ belief that sport has the power to unite people in a powerful way, creating hope where there was only despair. Education, comparable to sport, is another transformative force supported by Hank Aaron and his wife Billye Aaron. Hank Aaron chased the dream of a record 755 home runs and now, through the Chasing the Dream Foundation, underprivileged scholars can pursue the dream of a college education.

During her term as the mayor of Atlanta, Shirley Franklin became known as the “sewer mayor”. A less than glamorous moniker, but Mayor Franklin wears the title with pride in her efforts to protect Atlanta’s environment. Indeed, this most precious resource inherited by the generations to come is too big and too critical to ignore. The air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat are at the center of a revolution in thought and Laura Turner Seydel is leading the charge. As the Chairperson of the Captain Planet Foundation, Seydel promotes environmental education and gardens in schools. Through her support of Zero Waste Zone, an organization that encourages communities to change current disposal methods of consumed products, Seydel is protecting children and pregnant mothers from harmful chemicals found in consumer products. Sarah Vaughn, Kool and the Gang, Madonna,

and TLC are just a few of the stars that can credit a portion of their success to the creative genius of Clarence Avant and Dallas Austin. Avant’s career began in the 1950’s, and throughout his six-decade long journey he has used his business acumen to guide legendary artists and music powerhouses, such as Motown. The knowledge Avant has amassed through his experience is exactly what Dallas Austin hopes to share with the urban youth. Signature programs of The Dallas Austin Foundation for Music Education such as “Don’t Stop the Music,” a curriculumbased after-school program that teaches song writing and production to students, fulfills Austin’s desire. In addition to the numerous scholarship recipients, the nearly 2,000 students educated by “Don’t Stop the Music” are ensuring that the beat goes on and the music continues to contribute to the cultural landscape.

The Youngs

Dear Friends, During Ambassador Young’s 80th Birthday celebration, the Foundation wanted to recognize those who live in the spirit of “passing on blessings.” We were thrilled that Edwin Moses, Laura Turner Seydel, Dallas Austin and Oprah Winfrey accepted the very first awards from the Andrew Young Foundation. These leaders have blessed our global village with their humanitarian work. Each has been blessed in so many ways and has made it a priority to pass on those blessings to others. Let’s be inspired to action by their examples of service and social change. Warm regards, Andrea Young
