In recent decades, there has been a new surge of interest in the history and legacies of the Silk Roads both within academic and public discourses. A field of Silk Roads Studies has come into its own. Consciously mirroring the temperament of its subject, the field has moved out of the narrow niches of particular disciplines to become a truly interdisciplinary endeavor. New research findings about the historical operations of the Silk Roads and interpretations of their legacies for the modern and contemporary world have broken down geographical and temporal divides that once demarcated the Silk Roads as primarily pre-modern and Old World-centered conduits of globalization. In light of these developments, the time is ripe to begin formulating a new definition of the contour of Silk Roads Studies and laying a new foundation for further work in this field.
About the editors:
Jeffrey D. Lerner is a Professor of Ancient History at Wake Forest University. His main research interest concerns Central Asia in antiquity with special emphasis on the Hellenistic Period. Yaohua Shi is an Associate Professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Wake Forest University. His research interests include premodern Chinese vernacular fiction and East–West cultural relations.

This work synthesises art-historical and anthropological methods in the analysis of a large corpus of indigenous figure pendants, commonly called 'amulets', from the Greater Antilles and Bahamas. Figure pendants are small carvings of spirit beings perforated for suspension against the body. The data are drawn from new photographs, measurements and observations of 535 specimens compiled by the author during 2011–2018 in research visits to 34 museums and private collections in the Caribbean, the United States, and Europe.

Situated in present-day Dominican Republic (Hispaniola island), this site was one of the earliest and most affluent in Caribbean colonial history. The Decolonial approach used here critically analyses and reinterprets primary data about Concepción from the point of view of those colonized, particularly non-elite, Indigenous peoples, and those of African descent.

It is the Persian version which survives today and forms the source text for this book.
