Historically, the Des Moines River was the economic center of the community. As new technological advancements took the place of steamboats and ships, the use of the River declined. Today, there is little use of the river at all, though the City has developed around it. With this design, visitors can experience what Des Moines has to offer along the river thanks to this boardwalk system that highlights major features of the City. Broad views of the river, winding paths through the woodland, and connections to surrounding trails and neighborhoods are just a few of the park features. The boardwalk form imitates that of the Des Moines River and will act as a physical map for river users. Stops through the city can be planned prior to moving down the river via kayak, boat, or canoe. Thanks to this boardwalk system that highlights key features of the City, life will be brought back to Prospect Park, the Des Moines River, and to the city of Des Moines as a whole. COMMUNITY QUARRY A once abandoned and severely compromised site, The Quarry is a conceptual site imagined as a community driven, ecological, educational, and recreational site. This imagined landscape was originally inspired by Adolph Guttlieb’s Apaquogue. Soon, a geometric model became the framework for a community revitalization project.

The Current will bring together the community of Ames, Iowa through local involvement and interaction. A community market, a park to the south, and a winter skating loop provides social, educational, and recreational opportunities. Using wind as an organizational strategy and concept driver, this design offers seasonal options for the entire community as a major destination point on the east side of Ames.

ADOPTING STREAM ORDERS IN THE

RURAL DITCH SYSTEM DITCH DRAINAGE DIRECTION The current ditch system is primarily for the purpose of conveyance, to move water from one place to another. In the last several decades, the need for adaption in the current rural Iowa system has become increasingly apparent as the effects of climate change have increased. Much of the impact is a result of land being converted into production. This has reduced available habitat for native species. The ditch system is now crucial to their survival as it is used as a way for them to move around, though it lacks important sustenance for a healthy quality of life. To improve this system, stream order typologies can be applied. These typologies provide a framework that will increase water holding capacity, nitrate filtration, and wildlife habitats.

RIVER VALLEY PARK The rolling hills and suspended bridges of River Valley Park creates a dynamic experience for multiple generations. This park was inspired by the history of Ames as a railroad town while also embracing the flooding that occurs on the site annually. Through the seasons and stages of flooding, people will be encouraged to return to the playful space that revitalizes the area.

BOLTON & MENK MINNEAPOLIS, MN

MAY 2017 - AUGUST 2017

The Summer of 2017 Internship consisted of master planning, graphics, construction documentation, and conceptual designs. The work was primarily in the Minneapolis area.

The City of Rice is a town of approximately 1,300. It currently has a lack of trail connections along with many broken or missing sidewalks. The master plan’s main purpose was to propose connections both within city limits and to existing parks and trails near by.

Conceptual graphics of a deck, parking lot expansion, fire pit options, sledding hill, and event tent space were personally drawn for the Orono Golf Course.

COMMUNITY VISIONING AMES | IA JANUARY 2017 - PRESENT

Community Visioning works with small Iowa communities to identify assets and barriers in their transportation system. The process includes geologic analysis, facilitation groups in the community, and a compilation of data in to graphic maps.
