CJ Lang and Son won the ultimate accolade, Champion of Champions, at the Scottish Wholesale Achievers awards dinner last month. Held at the Sheraton Grand, Edinburgh, the glittering event attracted nearly 500 wholesalers and suppliers.

Scottish Wholesale Association, which created Achievers 13 years ago in partnership with Cash & Carry Management, commented: “This is an outstanding result for CJ Lang, one of our sector’s leading independent, familyowned business. The company has set a very high benchmark for our industry and we should all be inspired by its desire to keep improving standards.”

retail sector’s poor relation. Indeed, the high standards and professionalism we’ve witnessed throughout this competition confirm to our suppliers that our sector is a force to be reckoned with.

The team from CJ Lang also claimed two other titles outright – Best Symbol Group and Best Delivered Operation Retail – and was runner-up in the Best Marketing Initiative category. Kate Salmon, executive director of the

Sponsor’s view “JTI is delighted and proud to continue its long association with Scottish Wholesale Achievers and to have supported this year’s ‘Best Cash & Carry Depot’ award. “Scotland is an important market for JTI, with many important customers. “Involvement with Achievers allows us a greater insight into all aspects of our customers’ business which helps develop truly aligned trading relationships. “We wish the Scottish wholesale industry continued success in 2015 and beyond.” Alan Wilkinson business development manager JTI

Best Cash & Carry Depot Winner: United Wholesale Grocers, Springburn Runner-up: United Wholesale (Scotland), Queenslie Highly Commended: Booker, Hamilton What the judges said... “Because the cash & carry market is becoming more and more price driven, companies are having to react by offering price-match promotions and rich deals. “Top of the agenda for most managers is ensuring product availability and delivering great service to drive customer loyalty. “United Wholesale Grocers, Springburn, provides exceptional service to its customers, and this was evident from the depot floor to all levels of management. What stood out was just how accessible and open the senior management are to customers, depot staff, visitors, and supplier representatives. This nurturing of relationships is helping to drive loyalty – this was confirmed by the customer feedback.”

Sponsor’s view “Imperial Tobacco is proud to support the Scottish Wholesale Association and to have sponsored the 2015 ‘Best Delivered Operation – Retail’ award. “This year’s entries were of a high standard. All participants demonstrated excellence in the area of delivered operations. We were particularly impressed by the levels of customer service offered to the retail community and the pace at which the sector responds to changing customer needs. “We thank all participants for taking the time to enter and we wish them well for the year ahead.”

Best Delivered Operation – Retail Winner: CJ Lang and Son Runner-up: United Wholesale (Scotland) Highly Commended: Booker, Port Dundas What the judges said... “CJ Lang’s highly professional approach to wholesaling was demonstrated by the sophisticated processes and systems it has in place, along with a commitment to continuous customer service improvement. “All customers are given an exact delivery time and compliance is measured within a two-hour window. CJ Lang uses regular service level reports to respond quickly to customer feedback and demands, and it claims an impressive 98% service level, which was confirmed by retailer testimonials.

Best Delivered Operation – Foodservice

“Premier Foods is delighted to continue its long-standing support of Achievers through its sponsorship of the ‘Best Delivered Operation – Foodservice’ award. “Given the diverse nature of the customer serviced by foodservice wholesalers, all of our nominees demonstrated tremendous knowledge of their customers and should be proud of the service they provide in a demanding sector. “Thanks to my independent judges for their support and the SWA for the opportunity to be part of a vibrant market. Finally, congratulations to all the finalists.” Ross Brown business manager – foodservice Premier Foods

Winner: Fáilte Foods Runner-up: William Yule and Son Highly Commended: Dunns Food and Drinks What the judges said... “Within this category, each entrant showed unique qualities that they utilise to the full, whether green credentials, staff development or a great customer experience. All showed very good delivery of customer service. “The biggest challenge each entrant faces is the geography of Scotland – where and how to pick their fights. Another challenge is the diversity of the trade, which no single wholesaler can deliver to. “Fáilte Foods clinched the title due to its ambitious growth over the last few years, coupled with its agility in developing and exploiting new business. It has invested in a specialist fresh fruit & vegetable company to allow it to provide a full service to a very diverse customer base.”

Best Delivered Operation – On-Trade

“Britvic Soft Drinks is delighted to support the SWA and to have sponsored ‘Best Delivered Operation – On-Trade’. “This was an exciting and rewarding category to judge due to the variety of wholesalers who entered it. It was evident all entrants were extremely passionate about their business and that was reflected in the high levels of preparation and effort they made when being judged. Also, the deep understanding of the market and their customers was inspirational. “I would like to thank all the entrants for their excellent contribution.” Lee Robertson customer development manager – wholesale Scotland Britvic Soft Drinks

Winner: Gordon & MacPhail Runner-up: Sutherland Brothers Highly Commended: Dunns Food and Drinks What the judges said... “The standard in this category was exceptionally strong. All wholesalers are finding the market challenging, so it’s even more important for them to find a point of difference to offer their customers. Good examples of these differences were given by the entrants, which made the judging process enjoyable, educational and inspirational. “The judges were particularly impressed by the way that Gordon & MacPhail engages with its customer base and goes the extra mile in terms of education and training. It was able to showcase these aspects clearly. “The customer feedback results were also important in reaching the final results.”

Best Symbol Group Sponsor’s view

Winner: Spar, CJ Lang and Son

“Cott Beverages was extremely proud to sponsor and judge the ‘Best Symbol Group’ category for Scottish Wholesale Achievers 2015.

Runner-up: Day-Today, United Wholesale (Scotland)

“All of the finalists went into great detail about the support and standards they offer to the retailer. Their wholesale execution delivers choice, price and service levels that the retailer needs on a day-to-day basis.

Highly Commended: Lifestyle, Landmark Wholesale What the judges said...

“We would encourage other symbol groups to take part to assist suppliers in having a better understanding of the complex operation that wholesalers have to maintain to stay ahead of their competitors.” Melanie Morrissey wholesale & symbol controller Cott Beverages

“The judges found that the challenges faced by the wholesalers are also the opportunities to raise standards in symbol stores. These include uniform execution across stores of standards and key activity; optimising the commercial relationship while not damaging the entrepreneurial success of the retailers; and balancing the need for strategic evolution with the demands of today. “CJ Lang and Son, which scored an impressive 91%, has a realistic view of the current challenges, plus a strong focus on the future and the key steps to achieve its objectives. It provides outstanding support for the retailers in its group and very high standards of compliance. CJ Lang clearly showed that symbol standards can be world-class.”

Best Marketing Initiative Winner: Forteith Foodservice

Sponsor’s view “Taylors of Harrogate was extremely proud to sponsor and judge the ‘Best Marketing Initiative’ award for Scottish Wholesale Achievers.

Runner-up: CJ Lang and Son Highly Commended: Sutherland Brothers

“Wholesalers and retailers alike are striving to drive incremental sales and footfall in an increasingly challenging and competitive landscape. “Scotland has wonderful provenance and it was encouraging to see this being leveraged as the participants strived to create a point of difference in their offers. It was close run between all of the businesses and there are clear signs for a very positive and profitable 2015.” John Sutcliffe channel controller Taylors of Harrogate

What the judges said... “The entrants that shone in this category were those that illustrated a desire to continually improve. These wholesalers have a proactive mentality and a focus on the consumer and customer in relation to their growth aspirations. However, the entrants were very different in how they brought their marketing initiatives to life. “Forteith’s initiative incorporates a unique way of working. It has effectively created a co-operative approach to business, but has aligned this with a very strong desire to develop products and create brands that will win the hearts and minds of consumers. “Forteith’s focus on local sourcing has proven to be a profitable revenue stream and ensures that the local business environment thrives as well. The scheme has been developed from initially offering the products to customers within a 100-mile radius of Oban to making them available on a national basis.”

Sponsor’s view “The SWA is the perfect partner for Coca-Cola Enterprises to work with to highlight the importance of CRS, both within our own business and within the wholesalers of Scotland, and we are proud to sponsor the ‘Corporate Responsibility Award’. “We saw fantastic plans from all the entrants and a continued focus on improvement year on year. In addition, we saw how all the employees embrace the CRS initiatives, making their workplace a better place. “Thank you to all the entrants and we wish them every continued success in their own CRS journey.” Kerren Ratcliffe associate director GB field sales Coca-Cola Enterprises

Corporate Responsibility Award Winner: Bidvest 3663 Runner-up: Sutherland Brothers Highly Commended: Gordon & MacPhail What the judges said... “The judges saw strong evidence that the Scottish wholesale trade has worked hard to develop clear corporate responsibility policies. “Although the judging was exceptionally close, with all entrants delivering a high standard of work, Bidvest 3663 demonstrated passion and enthusiasm not only for the environment and its customers, but also for its workforce. “It has a clear corporate responsibility agenda that the entire workforce has embraced. It was able to show the improvements it has made over the last few years – it constantly measures results and highlights the difference that each change has made to its carbon footprint. Bidvest 3663 has plans in place to continue this journey in the future.”

Employee of the Year Sponsor’s view “Mondelez UK is delighted to have sponsored the ‘Employee of the Year’ award for the second time. “We uncovered some outstanding work that had been done by the entrants which raised the profile of their companies, as well as creating a great financial benefit. Once again, we were heartened to see the dedication that people are prepared to give to their jobs. “Fiona Seggie was a very worthy winner this year and we would like to congratulate her and also commend all of the entrants. We look forward to continuing to support Achievers.” Peter Baird field sales development manager Mondelez International

Winner: Fiona Seggie, business development manager, Iain Hill Runner-up: Ross Macpherson (left), merchandising & project manager, United Wholesale (Scotland), Queenslie Highly Commended: Surjeet Singh (right), checkout supervisor, United Wholesale Grocers, Springburn What the judges said... “Fiona, who has been with her employer for four years, thinks ‘out of the box’ – she decided to learn Punjabi so that she could communicate better with a lot of her customers. This has led to notable incremental sales. Fiona loves her job and gets a buzz when she can convince customers of a business idea. She will persist, even if she is not successful straight away. She is held in high regard by her customers.”

Proud Sponsors of Employee of the Year

[ ACHIEVERS ]

Great Place to Work Winner: Iain Hill

Sponsor’s view “AG Barr is proud to continue its support of the SWA and its members through the sponsorship of the ‘Great Place to Work’ category. “The high level of entrants received reflected how they perceive their business as a ‘Great Place to Work’. The questionnaire was aimed at giving employees a voice and was designed to explore the culture of the organisation. It was evident that size didn’t matter and the eventual winner was more like a family than an organisation. “I would like to thank our independent judge Cate Ritchie for her contribution.” Stevie Ramage business team manager AG Barr

Runner-up: Bidvest 3663 Highly Commended: Booker, Galashiels

What the judges said... “The judges felt strongly that the judging of Great Place to Work should be down to the employees of the businesses concerned. They therefore developed a questionnaire that allowed employees to share their views anonymously – on their business, their role and other aspects of employment. The design of this survey gave the judges the ability to measure performance against these areas. “Iain Hill received excellent feedback from its employees. Here is one comment that encapsulates why this business is such a Great Place to Work: ‘I am clear on my objectives, with full autonomy and the trust to carry out my duties. We work as a team and even the boss chips in if required. Suggestions to improve the business are encouraged. Our health and wellbeing is important, as is having a work/life balance. We are like one large family here and go out of the way to help each other. I can’t remember the last time someone actually left this business.’ ”

Champion of Champions Winner: CJ Lang and Son

Sponsor’s view “Philip Morris Ltd is privileged to support Scottish Wholesale Achievers and to have sponsored the prestigious ‘Champion of Champions’ award in 2015. “Whilst judging the award, it was evident that there is clear drive and determination within the Scottish wholesale market, and Philip Morris Ltd is proud to offer its conbusitinued ness support to wholesalers in Scotland. “We would like to thank all of the entrants for their level of commitment and achievement and wish them and the Scottish wholesale industry continued success.” Karen Murray regional sales manager Philip Morris

What the judges said... “The overall standard within Achievers was very high this year, with the winners of each category showing real passion and commitment to their business. The market is very competitive in Scotland – therefore, all the winners needed to display something different to make them stand out. “This year’s Champion of Champions, CJ Lang, displayed a great winning mindset throughout, demonstrating best practice in many areas. It is clearly always looking to improve its business.”

Supplier Sales Executive of the Year Winner: Jillian Blaney (main picture), Mondelez International

Sponsor’s view “The sponsorship of ‘Supplier Sales Executive of the Year’ allowed me an insight to the talent that we have working within our industry. “We found a high standard of delivery from all candidates but a very strong emphasis within cash & carries and not such a strong presence in the delivered sector (other than foodservice).

Runner-up: Lawrence Findlay (left), Unilever Food Solutions Highly Commended: Linda Fraser (right), Nestlé 1st Choice What the judges said... “Mondelez has not had the best of times in the wholesale channel but, despite these challenges, Jillian was still nominated by her customers for this award. She has worked closely with wholesalers to find ways of improving their business. In the face of a difficult year, Jillian has shone with her customers and demonstrated her depth of knowledge and her drive and enthusiasm for everyone to succeed.”

Project Scotland Judging process The Achievers category of ‘Project Scotland’ is designed to recognise and reward the efforts of suppliers in building relationships with the trade through relevant initiatives. Kirsti Sharratt, managing editor of Cash & Carry Management, partner in Achievers since its inception, co-ordinates the judging of Project Scotland (but doesn’t have a vote). Every supplier that enters this category makes a presentation to the judging panel, which is made up of key wholesalers. For 2015, the judges were: Gerry Fraser of Batleys Stephen Clinton of Booker Sean Scrimger of CJ Lang Stuart Harrison of Filshill Iain Hill of Iain Hill Ali Afsar of United Wholesale (Scotland)

• • • • • •

The standard of entries was very high this year, with the top three scoring between 78% and 87%.

Winner: Diageo, ‘Learning for Life Scotland’ Runner-up: AG Barr, ‘Best Games Ever’ Highly Commended: JTI, ‘Win with the Winners’

What the judges said... “Every judge on the panel (see opposite) was incredibly impressed by Diageo’s ‘Learning for Life Scotland’ scheme, which is all about putting something back into industry and helping to raise standards. “Learning for Life was launched in 2008 in South America, and last year, Scotland was the first European country to introduce the programme. The objective is to help equip young unemployed people for work in the areas of manufacturing, entrepreneurship, retailing, and hospitality including bartending. To date, Learning for Life Scotland has produced 300 graduates, 78% of whom have secured employment. “Diageo is committed to investing £5 million in this project over five years, and its long-term ambition is to make it sustainable beyond this initial funding.”

Best Advertising Campaign

Judging process

Winner: Foster’s Radler ‘Good Call – Volleyball’

In order to decide the winner of ‘Best Advertising Campaign’, wholesalers across Scotland nominate their favourite advert. It could be a TV, cinema, press, poster, online or outdoor campaign, but it has to feature a product or service sold or used in the Scottish wholesale trade. Stills of the shortlisted ads are printed in Cash & Carry Management to prompt awareness. Wholesalers then take a final vote. This year’s shortlisted adverts were: Foster’s Radler ‘Good Call – Volleyball’ Haig Club ‘Welcome’ Irn-Bru ‘Irn in our Blood’ Stella Artois ‘The Perfect Serve – Poolside’

• • • • What the judges said... “The shortlisted ads were chosen by wholesalers throughout Scotland, and this year the vote was spread fairly evenly, with just three votes separating the winner from the runner-up.”

Other nominations were received for: Ben and Jerry’s, Arbikie Potato Vodka, Carling, Casillero del Diablo, Foster’s Lager, Guinness, McVitie’s, Müller Rice, Snickers, Southern Comfort and Whyte & Mackay.

Best Overall Service Judging process

Winner: Whyte & Mackay

When assessing the ‘Best Overall Service’ from suppliers, wholesalers in Scotland consider the following:

Runner-up: AG Barr Highly Commended: Maxxium UK

• Deliveries (including admin support): accuracy, timescale, helpfulness, attitude of driver. Wholesalers who receive deliveries from their own company’s regional distribution centre do not give points for deliveries. The scores are then adjusted pro rata.

• Supplier

contact: communication, query handling, ability to make decisions.

• Scottish

focus: category/market information, marketing focus, dedicated direct/indirect sales team.

• Packaging & merchandising: relevance, merchandising support. Wholesalers who vote are named on the spreadsheet so that suppliers can contact them direct if they have any queries.

What the judges said... “Best Overall Service is one of the most fiercely-contested awards in Achievers and involves members of the Scottish Wholesale Association voting each month in Cash & Carry Management, over a four-month period. “Wholesalers firstly nominate their top 30 suppliers, and a shortlist is drawn up. They then mark the suppliers on deliveries, supplier contact, Scottish focus, and packaging & merchandising. “Each month the suppliers in contention are sent a full breakdown of the scores. This allows them to identify their strengths and weaknesses and to benchmark their own performance against that of their competitors. “This year the results were incredibly close, with just 0.07 of a point separating the winner and runner-up.” (For the full scores, see p.27)
