MIXED USE | URBAN INFILL CASTLE GARTH, NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE | ACADEMIC
Winter Garden
Mixed residential
History library
é The three components of the mixed use building
The “Urban Infill” brief was to create a mixed use building, accommodating residents as well as serving an alternative function. The site located in the centre of Newcastle is currently an under utilised car park adjacent to the historic Castle Garth. I articulated a scheme for a Library, Winter Garden and mixed use accommodation. é Site plan within Newcastle’s historic quarter

MONUMENTALISM
é Sketches of surrounding landmarks and context
é Moot Hall
é Castle Garth
The site is monumental in nature. Any building erected here would become synonymous with what people thought of Newcastle. Any new building would effect Newcastle’s brand image. My approach was to create a new monument without diminishing the essence of existing ones - this meant creating a new detached building.

The site once consisted of a mixed use development; a sewing machine workshop with small residential accommodation - I liked the idea of re-imagining Symmetrical the Stone based historical mixed use in today’s context. The site was later used for advertising, demonstrating its prominence as a landmark location beneath Castle Garth.

é Cyclic and Dihedral symmetry
é Symmetry of Moot hall and The Bridge Tavern
As the surroundings buildings are symmetrical in nature it seemed right to propose a new form with similar symmetrical values. I looked into cyclic and dihedral symmetry, this added a new characteristic to the area. The site is broadly square shaped helped to achieve this.

Play
é The Ouseburn Trust’s ‘Live Work Play’ are the three pillars of the masterplan
The Masterplan project is located in the post-industrial Ouseburn Valley just east of Newcastle City centre. The brief is to revitalise and renew the area of historical and cultural significance by introducing a variety of new facilities based on the Ouseburn Trust’s values of ‘Live, Work, Play’. Along with new residential accommodation, three new facilities were to be introduced; a Heritage Centre, Community Clubhouse and Brewery. Our task was to design one of these three - I chose the brewery.

é Experience
Movement - Pedestrians starting their journey at street level and making their way to the waterside following multiple typology based experiences. Topography - the brewing process follows the natural gradient staring a the top and ending at the bottom. Experience - Discovering different activities around hidden corners of the Ouseburn.

EXPORT AT SEA LEVEL
é The brewing process follows the topography of the site
é Exploded axonometric drawing of one of the brewery buildings
The Brewing process follows the natural gradient of the site making it more efficient and environmentally friendly, with supply delivery at high ground and export and consumption at Sea level. Each of the 8 buildings involved in the process is built as a single unit. The remaining building at the bottom is a bar composed of four more units being placed together.

Much off the construction occurs off-site with the timber structure, roofing and glazing being lowered into placed from a barge. The foundations are made on site with a fascia piece connecting the two. As there are 12 identical units, the construction phase is efficient and cost effective.

CREATING A LINK | BRIDGE OUSEBURN, NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE | ACADEMIC
é The site of the new crossing across the Ouseburn
The Bridge project was a predecessor to the Ouseburn masterplan. In a team of three we created a new pedestrian crossing linking the east and west banks. Our proposal is a Bascule Bridge with a triangular form. The bridge is suspended from a historic warehouse where it turns into a tunnel with steps taking you to street level. é Elevations of the proposed bridge and tunnel

FIND | FRAME
UPPER OUSEBURN, NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE | ACADEMIC The Frame project allowed me to explore the Ouseburn. I produced paintings and drawings that linked into a cultural context of my choice. I chose to link the Ouseburn to the 1927 film Metropolis. The four bridges that cross the Ouseburn are reminiscent of the urban dystopian bleakness and energy offered by Fritz Lang’s film.

é Plan of proposed store room and Art Studio within the context of the existing house
é Proposed rear elevation with bi-fold doors
To convert an existing garage within Blackheath Conservation Area, with scope to produce a new Art Studio, storage space and an electric charging point. Working independently, my brief was to propose ideas and work out the costs and time scales involved for the project. This involved site visits and surveying, meetings with the client and potential contractors, the production of planning drawings, construction drawings and an outline specification to tender for contractors.
