Behind the Scenes of
Course Design
A
s you watch a show jumping event, and either see the horse and rider blazing through the course or rider after rider having difficulty with a jump, do you ever wonder who created the course? A course designer has responsibility to many. They must think about the horses and riders and their ability, the spectators and

making sure it’s an exciting course for them to watch, the sponsors and their sponsored jumps, and of course the continuity of the sport. In addition, they must consider the size of the arena, the weather conditions and jumping surface and the time schedule for the arena that day (or night). The course designer is therefore the one person solely responsible for the quality,
standard, fairness and originality of every jumping competition. They are expected to show a high degree of creativity while also maintaining the tradition’s of the sport. We caught up with a few course designers (and one aspiring course designer) to get some behind-the-scenes insight on the art of course design.

On my side, I know I’m on the right track when in a big jump class maybe 40% are 4 points or lower. Ultimately the most important thing I’m focusing on though is that there are no big problems for the horse and rider, but yet it’s still a challenge to them. For this year, I’ve been very happy with the results from the big CSI-4* Indoor Show in Braunschweig in March. We’ve had 5 classes that count for

What is the most difficult thing about course design? I would say that setting the level of difficulty for the different classes is the most difficult thing about course design. On one side you need good results where not everyone seems to pass through with ease and not have to think too much about the course, but then on the other hand you want to have a course that riders and spectators can be excited about ultimately all for the love of the sport.

orses have been domesticated for around 5,000 years. Humans have found a variety of ways
to capitalize on the horse’s many assets to achieve their goals. For centuries we have been breeding horses to become more powerful and flexible so that they can be better equipped for the kind of job it will need to perform. The body of the horse is built for work. Its body is well balanced for hauling heavy loads because it’s heavier in the front. Horses also possess agility and a low center of gravity necessary to carry out the challenging, high speed maneuvers that are performed in battle. Humans have helped shape horses for many jobs throughout time but the combination of horse and human has shaped the world.

This FEI competition is ridden as Table A Mixed; a competition against the clock with one initial course and one jump-off. Riders are limited to two horses per rider. Each competitor will jump one round over a course of 12 to 15 jumps at the “International standard, set to 1.60 meters-approximately 5.25 feet. The first round and jumpoff, if any, are decided by adding together the penalties incurred over the course and any penalties for exceeding the time allowed to complete the course. Competitors with equal penalties for first place, will jump-off against the clock in a second round. The jump-off will be ridden over a shortened course and placings will be awarded in order of least penalties with the fastest times.
