s you watch a show jumping event, and either see the horse and rider blazing through the course or rider after rider having difficulty with a jump, do you ever wonder who created the course? A course designer has responsibility to many. They must think about the horses and riders and their ability, the spectators and making sure it’s an exciting course for them to watch, the sponsors and their sponsored jumps, and of course the continuity of the sport. In addition, they must consider

the size of the arena, the weather conditions and jumping surface and the time schedule for the arena that day (or night). The course designer is therefore the one person solely responsible for the quality, standard, fairness and originality of every jumping competition. They are expected to show a high degree of creativity while also maintaining the traditions of the sport. We caught up with Alan Wade, to get some behind–the– scenes insight on the art of course design!

Can you choose a few courses that you’re most proud of in your career? I always wanted to design at Dublin CSIO because as an Irish course designer, it is the most important show in our calendar. I have been lucky enough to design at some wonderful shows around the world, including:

Normally at major shows, we are also under time and schedule pressure from TV, show organisers, etc. and have to adjust designs depending on the time that we have to complete class. Some athletes judge a course on the strength /ability of their own horse in the class and not as a test for everyone in the competition.

Heading into the 2014 season, Rich wasn’t sure he would be able to compete at the World Cup level again with Flexible. At the mature age of 19, Flexible has been a serious professional

athlete for many years and jumping at this level is difficult for any horse. “There aren’t many world class caliber horses competing at 19 so Flexible’s situation is very unique,” said Rich. Rich admitted there was no “master plan” to qualify for the 2015 World Cup Jumping Final. He wanted to play it by ear and trusted that Flexible would tell him if he was ready to compete again. From the beginning of the season, Flexible was showing consistent results, but then in the months leading up to the Final, Rich was surprised that Flexible “really started to brighten up.” Rich won the 2014 Land Rover World Cup Grand Prix of Sacramento at the Sacramento International Horse Show in September and placed second in the 2014

orses have been domesticated for around 5,000 years. Humans have found a variety of ways

to capitalize on the horse’s many assets to achieve their goals. For centuries we have been breeding horses to become more powerful and flexible so that they can be better equipped for the kind of job it will need to perform. The body of the horse is built for work. Its body is well balanced for hauling heavy loads because it’s heavier in the front. Horses also possess agility and a low center of gravity necessary to carry out the challenging, high speed maneuvers that are performed in battle. Humans have helped shape horses for many jobs throughout time but the combination of horse and human has shaped the world.

This FEI competition is ridden as Table A Mixed; a competition against the clock with one initial course and one jump-off. Riders are limited to two horses per rider. Each competitor will jump one round over a course of 12 to 15 jumps at the “International” standard, set to 1.60 meters-approximately 5.25 feet. The first round and jumpoff, if any, are decided by adding together the penalties incurred over the course and any penalties for exceeding the time allowed to complete the course. Competitors with equal penalties for first place, will jump-off against the clock in a second round. The jump-off will be ridden over a shortened course and placings will be awarded in order of least penalties with the fastest times.
