The Power of Hope Gala 2015 - A Spring of Hope

March 28, 2015 Dear Friends of A Spring of Hope, We would like to welcome you to our annual gala, “The Power of Hope.” Thank you for all of your support and kindness. This year marks a very special time in our history as a foundation. It has been 10 years since my mother and I first visited the Beretta Primary School, which inspired the creation of A Spring of Hope. In August of 2014, we completed our 25th borehole project at the Mananatha Creche, which happens to be the pre-school run by the principal of Beretta School, Leanette Sithole—bringing ASoH full circle. Our work in the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces of South Africa—the nation’s poorest—has exposed our team to the variety of challenges poverty presents to rural schools. In concert with other local governmental and non-governmental organizations, permaculture is being taught at our partner schools, inculcating an awareness of water conservation and sustainable farming methods among both students and administrators. Focusing on crop rotation and seedling cultivation, Leanette leads regular permaculture training classes for representatives from other schools. Teachers and administrators from new partner schools are inspired to replicate the food gardens at Beretta at their own schools. Our partner schools have dramatically improved classroom environments for their students with improved sanitation and nutrition. Yet, sanitation issues continue to present challenges. Many schools still lack adequate kitchen facilities to prepare the food grown in their gardens. Others are still working toward a functioning gardening program. Our team in South Africa has identified these schools and we are working on getting them the help they need to achieve their goals. With donations from our annual gala, corporations, individual donors, and grants, A Spring of Hope will continue our work to bring water resources, food gardens, and sanitation solutions that best suit each individual school. We are thrilled to be collaborating with new partners, South African Airways and the Irie Foundation. Thank you for your support! We would like to thank our generous gala supporters: South African Airways, House of Mandela, Arctic Beverage, Abbvie Pharmaceuticals, Boca Magazine, Royal Malewane, Rotary Water Well Projects, The Thornybush Collection, Passage to Africa, The Flagship, Skin Appeal, PhotoArt by Celia, Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, Sophia Lindop, Travel Trackers, Ocean 234, Standard Hotel and Cloud 9. A Spring of Hope would also like to extend a very special thank you to Dr. Maki Mandela, our Guest of Honor. As we move forward, we are optimistic that more rural schools in Limpopo and Mpumalanga will become thriving learning centers, better equipped to tackle the challenges of poverty. We hope you enjoy the unique evening we have planned for you. Thank you for joining us! Gratefully yours, Brittany Helena Young President, A Spring of Hope
