2 CASS Days Open with Hoots and Bangs by Marjorie V. Dalugdugan Arachnids gather on the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) grounds on August 23, 2011 for the annual celebration of its founding week. The first semester of the school year has been the mark for the college's yearly inter-ground competitions for the different societies within the CASS Bowl. This year's college days opened with crowds cheering for their respected societies. With the theme “CASSikatan: Higher Than Any Other,” the celebration officially started with a foot parade accompanied by cheers, hoots and bangs of the drums. Led by the Executive Council and their marching band, the parade moved from the college grounds going out for the university and the community to behold. The queue for the societies was then led by the Filipino Society

(KAPILAS BAYAN), History Society, Psychology. Society, Sociology Society, AB English Organization (ABEO), General Education Program a n d t h e P o l i t i c a l S c i e n c e S o c i e t y. Each society not only showcased their cheering skills but also their creativity with their colorful arcs. These arcs were made with recyclable materials as part of the EC's aim to make the college greener. From bamboos to plastic bottles and abanikos, the students' part of the parade surely made their props colorful and environmentally aware. The morning ended with a cheer off among the different societies who participated. Showing off their best and loudest cheers and yells, the CASSikatan events then proceeded.

FLIPTOP enters CASS Literary Events by Danica T. Vallejo CASS hits a milestone as it launched its first FLIPTOP's Free Style Rap battle competition last July 27, 2012 at the CASS lobby as one of the this year's CASS Days literary events. This recent trend battle of the mouth and mind is most likely a combination of debate, rap, and balagtasan, thus it is usually dubbed as the “Makabagong Balagtasan.” Free Style Rap Battle was fearlessly participated by the seven societies namely the AB English Organization, General Education Student Organization, Historical Society, Kapilas-Bayan, Political Science Society, Psychology Society and the Sociological Society. With the known nature of the game the CASS-EC made its own version of the battle and called it, “FLIPTOP Sanitized Version.” CASS's version upholds the rule of no cuss words allowed to avoid conicts after the competition and to promote camaraderie among one another. The competitors were teamed in two groups with two members each, trying to out rhyme and outwit one another with heavy teasing punch lines with the various themes in every round. In the first round the theme was edukasyon; politico was the theme for the second round and the final theme was lipunan. Yells and cheers filled the CASS lounge as the competitors gathered and faced each other. After five rounds the Historical Society and tthe Psychological Society stood in the end.

To determine the ultimate winner, a one-on-one battle between Historical Society represented by Dominic Reyes and Raphael Purganan and Psychological Society represented by Miko Jude Baterna and Pierre Randall Sansarona was commenced. “Asa atong kalaban, ay tuara!” was height of their opponents. This later on was outwitted by Sansarosa saying “akala ko ba walang laitan, pero bakit mo nilait ang aming height?” One sure hit also was delivered by Baterna, “…kayo alam niyo bah ang history ng history?” a line that gathered so much reactions from the audiences especially from history majors. As the competitors become superb with their lines, so did the students cheering for them, discounting the societies they belong to. And as expected, punch lines somehow made everyone seemed to explode but Sansarona reminded everyone with hisline, “Sa FlipTop walang pikunan;” the game's virtue which serve as the basic rule of the game. At the end of the final round the three judges, Raymund Garcia, Charlie Checa and Noel Opema, came up with a score of 88 for both teams, making way for a tie-breaker where no theme bounded the words of the competitors; it was a free-style match.

Successful Freshmen Orientation and General Assembly by Fritz Patrick Y. Villanueva “Every year, there are about 40,000 students who graduate from high school, about 10,000 apply at MSU-IIT, out of these numbers, only about 3,000 are accepted” boasted Chancellor Sukarno D. Tanggol while giving his inspirational message during the Freshmen Orientation. “Imagine? You are very lucky to be here.” he added. On June 20, various student activities were conducted and the day started with the Freshmen Orientation which showcased what the Institute has to offer for the newly-enrolled students. Most of which were explained by the different departments and offices in the Institute such as the function of the administration and guidance and counseling offices. Many services and campaigns were discussed, including old and new services alike. Students were encouraged to visit offices which may help them in their respective concerns. Further, the Kataastaasang

The Institute's yearly PALAKASAN is the greatest moment for the eight schools and colleges to grab the chance of becoming the best in literary, cultural, and sports events; eventually, becoming the champion. Students from the different schools and colleges would compete with one another in order to show what they got. But how come CASS's performance during this year's PALAKASAN seems to be unsatisfactory? Certainly, there are several factors which contributed to CASS being on the 7th spot in this year's PALAKASAN. It would be unbelievable if we'll say that CASS participants to PALAKASAN 2012 lack preparedness for their respective events. We were fresh from CASS days then, a month and several days before the official start of PALAKASAN. That would somehow mean that the participants already had preliminary practices as part of their preparation. One factor to be considered is the funds collected from the students' assessment fees. Yes, our college has funds for this yearly event but the question is, are the funds enough to cover all the expenses of the participants? Is the budget allocated for this year's PALAKASAN used properly? There have been hearsays that some of the funds were lost. And it is one of the unsolved issues revolving around the CASS-EC. With this, said issue should solve this case. Another factor which possibly led to the poor performance of CASS is that instead of being in unison with one another, the students seemed to be trapped in the past, the past referred to as the “CASS Days Controversy.” Several societies had disputes regarding the guidelines for some of the events during CASS days and which society should be hailed as the overall champion. Instead of using CASS days as the instrument of preparation for the PALAKASAN, it eventually led to the disintegration among the individuals and societies. There is also the support from the faculty and students of CASS. Instead of showing full support to CASS participants, majority of the students went to their respective hometowns and took advantage of the suspension of classes for the whole duration of PALAKASAN 2012. And maybe, just maybe, some participants were being too confident to bring home the bacon but unfortunately, ended up losing. But the real thing here is that all the participants of CASS during PALAKASAN did their best in their respective events. Due to the fact that CASS is only on the 7th spot, people can't help but criticize, complain, and even compare this year to the performance of CASS in theprevious years. And eventually, this leads to faultfinding or pointing out of lapses, concerning the whole population of CASS. Now despite the experience of CASS during this year's PALAKASAN, students should bear in mind that all the other colleges are also putting the best of their very best just to excel in all the events. This is not just a competition between two contenders but of eight. Students must start considering how they would be able to help the College and make it more dynamic than ever. As for the student leaders who lead the student populace, as elected officers of the CASS-EC, they should perform their duties properly and professionally. They should encourage active participation of the students in all events. But faultfinding is not the point in here. Rather, it is on the assessment of the performance of CASS in this year's PALAKASAN in order to be better in the upcoming years. And yes, we are still in the age of being better, but looking forward to the “HOWs” and “WHENs” that will eventually lead to being the best.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor,

As a newbie in this Institution, it makes me wonder whether the dress code has been effectively implemented or not. Based on my observation, the security guards vary on their bases of what are the different conditions prescribed in the dress code. I can see many students wearing such clothes which are prohibited. I have seen students freely getting in and out of t he campus wearing pedals, sleeveless, and see-through dresses. I always have this question clouding up my mind every Atime I get to decide what clothes to wear during weekdays: “Why did the guards let them pass through and even get inside the campus even if what they are wearing is prohibited? Is it possible that the security guards are not that properly-oriented about the dress code? Are there other reasons behind this issue?” I hope that this letter will serve as a reminder that we students also care about the rules and regulations provided by the Institute and that we also give due respect to the security guards. What we want here is that things and issues as such must be clarified. Nheizl, 1st year GenEd

RESPONSE Dear Nheizl, As stated in the Prescribed Dress Code (PDC), all students and facult y members must comply with the different conditions of such. When asked regarding this issue, the security guards gave a common answer. The security guards said that they only strict ly fol ow what is imposed in the PDC. Yes, some of these gate guards may have interpreted the different guidelines of the dress code mistakenly. But it is too irrational if all the blame will only be placed on the guards. Maybe we, IITians, should consider the idea that students and facult y members must also learn how to fol ow the rules imposed by the Institute. For further clarification and guidance, you are advised to visit the MSU-IIT official website in order for you to read and thoroughly understand the Prescribed Dress Code. Editorial Board

Money is the root of all evil. And so the saying goes. But I guess, otherwise. I think the root of all evil is the opportunity of human beings to succumb to the negativity of the endless possibilities of the so called free will. The idea that one can do whatever he wants is practically what every individual is looking forward to. Remember when you were a kid and you wanted everyone to follow you around and do as you bid them? That continues until one grows up. The innate need to be on top of the food chain has always been part of the human schema. And what better way to condition people to do as they are told, other than the precious, highly available yet usually rare, money. Last year, the college was under the reign (regime, rule, or spell, whichever you prefer) of a certain group of people that was led by a charming, slightly delightful yet highly mediocre individual, who was chosen by his own people (the students of the college) under the fair means of an election. Little did these people know that everything was sinking from that point on. Going back to the topic that money or at least the opportunity given if one had access to a large amount of money happens to be the root of society's problems; this is where it all falls into place. The CASS Executive Council holds the money of the students by means of the biannually collection of the Assessment Fee. During the term of the exgovernor an amount of 220 pesos from the first semester was collected and another 180 pesos for the second semester. With approximately 1,500 students in the college's population, that amount would sum up as a colossal figure. For the first term of the school year, the absolutely valid reason of having the students of the college shoulder his expenses for his Korea Leadership Summit trip made sure that the assessment fee would be more expensive than that of any other college within MSU-IIT. If you can clearly remember during the first CASS general assembly of last school year, the then governor's biggest promise was that of a ''re-echoing'' of what he was to learn from the summit to the college. And if you can also clearly remember, none of that happened last school year. The only prominent change that so far happened during that year was the excessive spending of student money for fast food cravings of the Executive Council. For the second semester, another huge amount was demanded from the student body for the assessment fee. You'd think that after sadly surrendering 220 pesos the past term, the next one would be less painful. Alas! The world is not a wish granting machine. You'd ask what

events would this sum cover for that specific semester, well there was the Alay sa Graduates event, the CASS and Institute Paskuhan. However, although there were only these events that the EC had to take care of, the governor who solely volunteered to hold CASSayuran's budget, failed to pay the publisher the exact amount needed for the publishing of the first semester's issue and failed to provide an amount for the second semester's issue therefore forcing the paper to publish only through an electronic issue. With the unfortunate arrival of Typhoon Sendong, some viewed this as an opportunity to hide their tracks from the past semester's whirlwind spending of student money. With all the receipts and letters washed off, it is unlikely for any of us to track down all the transactions made by the past administration. The only thing we can do is to ask, where in the world did the people responsible to hold the money put it. Where is the justification for asking that kind of amount while leaving us blind on how they managed to waste away hundreds of thousands of pesos within five months? Last semester's problems might have slipped some minds due to the mud of the typhoon swallowing and burying it from sight. However, we must not forget that these things will come back and haunt us. The things in the past if not corrected will soon come back and repeat itself. What will we do by then? Forget? Leave it be? Pretend that we know nothing about it? Or just plainly assume that everything will work out the way it should? When will the students wake up? This semester, history repeated itself. The root is still the same- money. There are different characters involved but it is still the same. Apparently, a big chunk of the assessment fee was placed somewhere else. And although, there is no ood or mud to wash away receipts and letters, there is no clear paper trail to follow. One can actually wonder if there was even a record. One can just speculate on how the collected assessment fees were spent or how the Executive Council allocated funds for all expenses. If you borrowed this copy of CASSayuran that you are reading, it is because of improper allocation of funds. In the breakdown of this semester's assessment fee, the EC collected 17 pesos from every student as the budget for CASSayuran. There are more than 2000 students, thus simple Mathematics will tell you that the budget should be around 34,000 pesos. It would have been enough to make sure that you will have your own copy since the current printing cost of a copy of CASSayuran is 15 pesos. However, the Executive Council budgeted 25,000 pesos only. Again, do the Math.

5 Change: For better or for worse There is no supreme road for winning, no shortcut to its attainment. Everybody has to take the long road and face the perils clothed upon it. It is like exploring a secret garden that is constrained and bounded with excitement, yet, threatened by uncertainties. With keen interest, at the beginning of any journey and competitions, everybody always get their minds full of enthusiasm and curiosity. But it is always coupled with doubts and apprehensions and the anxious concerns of not winning. Every year, MSU-IIT celebrates its Charter Day with the tradition of having different competitions. Students of IIT actively participate in different competitions prepared by the Kataas-taasang Sanggunian ng mga Mag-aaral (KASAMA ) and the competitions are contended by the different colleges. This year's Charter Day celebration was full of different competitions such as Float Parade with a movie theme, Bottle Run, Organizational Fair, Literary, Sports and Cultural competitions. Further, there were also competitions which were participated by the faculty and staff of the Institute. Before every competition, we all know that there will always be guidelines and

specifically a pointing system that will determine and will serve as the basis for determining the winners. This year's pointing system was prepared by the KASAMA Tabulation Committee (TabCom) that wasalso agreed by the TabCom from the different colleges. In the original pointing system, first place is equivalent to ten points, second is eight, third is six, fourth is four, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eight is two. Unexpectedly, an hour before the awarding of the winners, the pointing system was change because of diverse grievances raised by colleges who felt that it was unfair if such pointing system would be followed because it seemed that they ranked the same as those who are in the 5th, 6th, 7th , and 8th place. So, the pointing system was changed; first place became ten, second is 8.75, third is 7.5, fourth is 6.25, fifth is five, sixth is 3.75, seventh is 2.5, and eight is 1.25. Furthermore, before the pointing system was changed, CASS ranked overall3rd place but as after the change of the pointing system, CASS ranked 5th place which led some CASS student to rally during the opening of the awarding which in turn shocked other students attending the said awarding.

ARACHNIDS SPEAK: “AS A FROSH” by Merb Ganzon

College life is something that a student looks forward to. For some of the parents, it may be a burden, but for students, it's a whole new world of interest. A whole new world where you need not stay in school for eight hours straight, you need not stay in a classroom and wait for the next teacher, you need not remember if it's your day of cleaning or not. Something new, a step higher than before. The first impression college life generally injects to students is the acquisition of freedom, since one is regarded as a “mature” person already. Some may think they need not inform their parents wherever they may go. Some may have already acquired trust, for they already think that they are mature enough and they already know what's right from wrong. They may do something not normal, but they think they have the right rationale to do so. They reject their parents' advice for they are already in “college” and they think they no longer do what children usually do- not thinking before acting. Some may also think that this is a new avenue where your grades really reect what you did. They think that compared to their high school days, their hardships will be more justified. And everything now will be transparent. Their skills will freely show who they are; unlike in high school, only students close to the teachers or those who are only known by the teachers are the ones who are only considered. Again, this is a new world of maturity. Children are regarded as responsible beings now. And that alone is a very good music to one's ears. One may already speak his/her heart out. College students are already entitled to their own opinions. Yet others may consider this as a

burden as well. Hanging on one's neck are the letters R-E-S-P-O-N-S-I-B-I-L-I-T-Y, and that's a lot of pressure to the head, trust me. It's like if you don't move, you may cull off yourself from where you are now. And if you don't persevere, you won't get anything. Nevertheless, some are just excited to call their teachers “Prof.” Too shallow it may be. But it's part of being excited to experience what the movies have shown about “college students.” -How they call their teachers “Prof” and all. How they walk from one class to the other. Or how freely, they can skip from classes. Unlike in high school days, one will be easily identified if he/she skips in between classes. While some are just merely excited to experience what it's like to be in an institution like this, to be in a university, to be in a college, to be in a group of students called “block.” Here, the fight is expected to be even. No one's elite. Everyone has his/her own field, own training grounds and own skills to be harnessed. One must not compare himself/ herself to another and everyone has his/her own levels of difficulties. The other thing here is that professors are expected to be fairer in giving grades. It's like you can't bring a cake to your professor to get candles. Especially that the university is highly respected. Well, these are just typical impressions and expectations of a clueless frosh to college life. First semester done, and all of these may be changed. As they say, don't make your first impressions last, for they may be called judgments later on.

*Arachnids Speak is a space intended for CASS students to share their opinions/comments/insights/views/e tc. on anything under the sun. CASS students are encouraged to submit an article. “As a Frosh” is the maiden article.

Undeniably, the feeling of overowing excitement of the CASS students was dampened; questions were asked; pronouncement was made. There was injustice. The spirit of the CASS students seemed like a burning fire heavily poured with water. Why change the pointing system at the 11th hour? Why change what was agreed on? Is that how fickle minded people are? Andbecause of that change, wheels were turned. Winners became the opposite. Merry making became chaos. Instead of celebrating the Institute's Charter Day, the focus was on airing each college's complaints and arguing each college's stand and view point. Whatever happened to the Institute core values of commitment, integrity, teamwork, excellence and accountability? Were these not etched in our minds and hearts? Competition is good, yes. It pushes us to give our best and to put our best feet forward. But a line has to be drawn- when do we stop competing and simply enjoy the fun? If we do not create healthy boundaries, we will resent it when others do. If we treat each other with kindness and compassion, then we will be able to negotiate peacefully existing conicts. It is also important that we must know the stories

behind every decision before we let aggressiveness and negative forces eat away the foundations of peace. Let us conserve the very essence of harmony and happiness. The concise form of kindness can ease a heavy heart. Humans as we are, this is going to happen again. But let us not allow history to repeat itself. We can correct the mistakes in the past by being right in the present and adhering to rightness in the future. It is hard but it is definitely right to be proud and be merry for your opponent's win. Do not deprive him of that glory. Do not commit injustice to be awarded for something you don't have the right to own. At the end of the day, recognize yourself. You are the best judge of your own performance. You are your own champion. Hard work & determination is victory & triumph.

10175: Yay or Nay? by In the midst of a sane conversation try to bring up the issue on Republic Act No. 10175 or the Anti-Cybercrime Law and everybody is going to freak out; either because they are against it or they are against those who over-react on this law. This only shows how great the impact of Anticybercrime law is on the minds of the people. Well, I do respect everyone for whatever their opinions are regarding this matter, since I believe we are all entitled to our own opinions. But this time allow me to share this personal experience of mine with regards to this hot issue. I was throwing all my attention to my friends' posts on Facebook when suddenly someone totally unknown to me sent me a very long message. Whenever I receive such messages I notice that most of them are nonsense, yet I still try to open and read them. This time, hoping that it's something different, I read the message and I got nothing except the feeling of being annoyed. I would not say that it is nonsense though I believe that the person who constructed the message is totally ignorant, which really pissed me off. The message was all about the Anti-Cybercrime Law. It said that if the bill will be passed, you cannot do a “like” or comment on Facebook anymore; like what they were trying to point out is that there will Editor in Chief Associate Editor News Editor Feature Editor Literary Editor Correspondents

be no Facebook anymore. The moment I finished reading the entire message, I was pissed, of course. Why does that person have to pass that message on to other people when in fact there was no truth to the message? Forgive me for saying this but I think they are ignorant of the law considering the mere fact that they do not know what is it all about. Everybody, listen. Anti-Cybercrime Law is Anti-Cybercrime Law. It would neither stop us from liking a status or photo nor prohibit us from leaving a comment on Facebook. It will not take Facebook away from us. Tomorrow or the next day or even for the next years Facebook, twitter, and all those social networking sites will still be there as long as we continue to patronize them. In fact, the government does not own those social networking sites. They cannot just prohibit us from doing a like or leaving a simple comment as long as they are not offensive. I don't understand why people have to be so impulsive. Why didn't they read first the bill before they had gone crazy and went around passing that message? They very lesson we could get from this incident is to read first or at least listen first before you talk. It is better to be silent even if you know a lot than to say a lot and be labeled as ignorant. Impulsive people always end up with a mistake.

Higit Sa Kasikatan

Hear My Call

ni Markey Magallanes

by: Pio. Lumongsod Jr.

Sino ba naman ang hindi m a n l i l i i t ka p a g n a r i r i n i g n i y a n g inaalipusta ng ibang estudyante ang kanyang kolehiyo? Malamang, marami

Anu-ano nga ba ang kahalagahan at kaugnayan ng m g a i t o s a n a i i b a n g ka s i ka t a n g tinatamasa ng CASS ngayon? An Arachnid’s Spirit The arachnids have never failed to show the entire human race how able are they to make the most magnificent webs. The eight legs of the arachnid are embodied in seven distinct disciplines found in the College of Arts and Social Sciences: English, Filipino, History, Philosophy and Humanities, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and the Special Program of General Education. It is to be given with great merit that all these factions strive in unity for the attainment of a common goal: the goal to understand and simplify the complexities of humanity. What takes CASS to a higher leap is its mission of developing a globally competent, socially responsible, culturally sensitive and humanistic scholars and professionals. This is the ideal college – the college where various cultures, historical backgrounds and traditions are duly recognized and carefully utilized so as to historically develop an individual. A human being is geared up to embark the future through collectively enhancing the intellectual, emotional, cultural, and social aspects. Here in the College of Arts and Social Sciences, our laboratory is the society. Our variables are the people having diverse cultures, traditions, social and political norms. We study and experiment people who are coping with the demands of the modern and challenging world. We continue to understand the complexities of human race irregardless of no certain and constant variable. Where else can we find such characteristics? Nowhere else but in the College of Arts and Social Sciences. In CASS, there is no room for

Bukod sa IPAG, OCTAVA at Kalimulan, lalo ring nagpapatingkad sa CASS ang mga gurong nagsisipagwagi at nagpapamalas ng galling sa larangan ng akademiya. Ilan sa mga gurong nagbigay ng karangalan sa CASS ay sina Prof. Hilto Aguja, Prof. Alma Maranda, Ginoong Rabindranath Po l i t o a t a n g b a g o n g t a l a g a n g natapangasiaw ng PRC, Prof. Miriam Cue. Song of Love “Life is a Song.” Have you ever heard that line before? For some singers, it is implicit, they even sung their lives in any performances; for some choir members maybe they'll say it is a title of a famous songbook in church; but for you, how would you interpret those words? Loading? Don't be bothered at all this time. By reading thiws, you can ponder of what does that mean by sharing you this lyrical story – an epic of love and misfortune of a guy.

Dear Princess, I remember so well the day that you came into my life and that I can say you are a new fantastic point of view. Hey, I just met you and this is crazy. You are one of the beautiful girls all over the world, a gorgeous girl who is shining, shimmering, splendid in my eyes. Now I am telling you it might be you, all of my life. Can I ask your father May I marry your daughter? Suddenly in the last few days, I saw you were running out of me, like run, run, devil run. But please believe me, please don't run. I needed someone like you in my life, nobody, nobody, nobody but you. Like I will never be the same without you. When you glimpse at me I'm jumping with joy and I can't fight this feeling anymore. I love you anad I like the way you are. Seconds, hours, so many days have passed and I still can't go on loving you. Near, far wherever you are I know you are there and you will be there always by my side. Yes, I was born for you. It was written in the stars and I'll gotta live like I'm dying in loving you till the end. In times of your despair, you can count on me, like one, two, three, I'll be there. Through the years, you never let me down. You've turned my life around. Because of you my life has changed. I love you, Goodbye,

not one person getswithout undertaking the learnings CASS has to offer CASS establishes the foundation of the future lawyers, engineers, medical . practitioners, teachers, and public servants .Having said everything abovementioned, us, arachnids can take pride and with fiery ardor to that fact that CASS leaves a legacy in every individual. CASS initiates the realization of the Institute's core values. Here, we have the Commitment to serve the public with utmost dedication; the Excellence which would take us beyond borders; the Teamwork which would back Aristotle's notion that not one man is self-sufficing; the Integrity to exert best of our efforts; and the Accountability of producing a legitimate and credible result. The College of Arts and Social Sciences got everything in the figure of an arachnid. The legs to work so as to attain excellence, the drive for cooperation and unity, and the spirit to unceasingly build the webs of success. *This essay won first place in the CASS Days Essay Writing Competition English Category. discrimination. One failure does not directly imply eternal futility. Thus, the existence of the General Education-Special Program. We do not undervalue nor neglect an individual. Instead, we give them hope – the hope that there is a blossom-filled land at the end of long and rickety road. We give them the firm conviction that a greener Pasteur awaits, and to reach it, they are yet to be flawlessly molded. CASS gives chance to the hopeless, strength for the weak and shield for the defenseless. Value is what defines CASS, among any other. “We are the conscience of the Institute,” aptly said Dean Nora Clar. The arachnids spirit thrusts and strongly holds to the notion that values is what takes man to the world. Yes, intelligence is what gets a person to the job, but values is what makes him stay. Here, we believe that knowledge without virtues is as useless as an unsharpened blade. There is no truth on the irrational labeling of CASS as a trash bin of shiftees, transferees, and ill-fated students. No, that stance is any angle incorrect. Take heed that in and out of MSU-IIT

How to put it? When words with which is spoken or written Either would fade sooner Like a wisp of air; like a whisper So fragile How to put such felicity? Of a heart that speaks with such abundant delight An approaching stranger, a hazy beautiful image That utters thee such honest admiration But oh! The rays crept into the windows And she knew. Elusive as it might be still, A paint of smile on her face for a moment And it stayed some little more With these last verses that she writes And with the infinite hope that she forever carries.

A Child of God by Weena Sarabillo

A beautiful child of God for I am loving. Rise like sunrise in the morning, Filled with dew of mine river, Deep within is the heart of a giver. I’ve brought out happiness and joy, In bliss like the princess of Troy. In the paradise of Eden, I’m the white roses, Blessed by peace of grace with a heart that never closes. Sunset comes and darkness invades, Still mine beauty never fades. Mine heart has rays, A gift of Almighty God, loving as always. In challenges I’ve faced, surrender never been said, For I am a child of God, I will not be afraid.

On the other hand, Sisa considered her daughter Basilia acted by Karen Ramos as a rebel child. Through Simsimi, she found out that the aspiration of Basilia was for the welfare of everybody, justice for all people. Later, Simsimi told Sisa of his origin, by portraying all the happenings in his life and helped Sisa to remember important things that she has forgotten. Eventually, Sisa found out that Simsimi was her long lost third child Simon. Because of the pain and sorrow that Sisa felt after the death of her two other children, it became her daily thought and made her forget everything else. The play reminds that we should not only focus on the thing that we lost but appreciate what is still there; to appreciate what is present in life rather on the past. Basilia reminds the youth to fight for justice for the oppressed people in the community. It was later found that the girl was Ibyang Alingagngag played by Grichen Tumapon. A flashback happened which showed the story of Ibyang. It started with her dream to help her family escape from poverty. In order to fulfill her dream, the best thing she can do is go to college. Fortunately, she passed the MSU-SASE. Her family was so excited and happy for her achievement; her mother in the person of Maria Deiza Lozano, father in the person of Rey Mark Maranga, her brother “boy pick-up” in the person of Mike Emmanuel Iglupas and together with her two sisters in the persons of Wendy Auditor and Omaima Ampang were also proud of her. Everyone in their community was happy for her and wished her her luck to have a better life upon departing their place. Ibyang reached Iligan City where her preferred campus MSU-IIT is located. Upon entering the school, a guard played by Shara Pitogo, assuming Ibyang to be an old student, gives her a warning about the dress that she was wearing. Ibyang informed the guard that she is a freshman and wants to enroll in the Institute. After settling her first conflict, she went to different colleges to find a program that fits her score. Unfortunately, she was rejected a number of times due to either her score was low from the required cut-off or slots were full. Never giving up, she went to the College of Engineering, was accepted, and informs her family about the news by asking a favor from a stranger

(somebody from the audience) to send a text message to her family. After a day of waiting, her mom replied that she needs to work while studying for they can't afford the expenses that Ibyang asked for. She has no choice but to find work. She went to the DSA to apply as a Student Assistant but the head of the DSA played by Joey Ramas refused to accept her since she is still a freshman. Finding job outside the campus was her next step. She went to Jollibee, Mc Donalds, Chowking, Mackies and Alberto's Pizza House to look for a job but unfortunately nothing was available. She was hopeless until she met a woman played by Anisa Mangorangca whose business was selling “Ukay-ukay.” Ibyang started working for her while going to school. She put up with all sacrifices just to achieve her dream. She budgets the food she eats to save money. Temptations from all over came but Ibyang overcame them. She has to control all the things that might destrupt her studies but her heart finally gave in. She had a crush on Sam played by Haroun Al-Rashid Usop, one of her classmates. Sam confessed to her that he also has feelings for Ibyang which made her totally fell in love with Sam. Later, Ibyang heard that the institute was facing budget-cut problem that will increase the tuition fee of the students. She was also forced to leave her job at the “ukay-ukay” for the owner had to lessen her workers since sales are low. Ibyang got confused about what to do. She needs a friend, a shoulder to cry on; she needs Sam whom she thinks is the only one who understands and accepts her for who she is but Sam was not by her side. While walking alone in the “Himantayon Avenue,” she heard for the very first time the words “I love you” which melted her heart like an iron burned on fire coming from the boy that she loved the most but addressed to another girl. Ibyang was confused with what she must do or prioritize- to follow and defend her love or to study and help her family. Carrying all her burdens and feeling empty and alone, Ibyang went to the over pass like no one cares. The people assumed that Ibyang will commit suicide because of all her problems. But the people were wrong. Ibyang shouted that she is not going to commit suicide but to protest against the budget-cut that was being imposed for surely not only her future will be affected. This is for all IITian students. Over the past years, many suicide incidents happened because of different reasons and majority of it was about failed love life. Wake up students of IIT, that is not the way to solve your entire problem may it be about love, financial or studies, life must not end with such a way, there is more to life after that. Continue fighting budget-cut as well as other problems. You are an “Iskolar ng Bayan.”

8 What Every CASS Arachnid Should Know symbol that will make the college standout, and that is, CASS ARACHNIDS. I believe CASS was the first College to use a symbol, a unifying name from among the colleges of MSU-IIT, and later on the other colleges followed. I chose the name CASS Arachnids because during my time, that's the symbol that was used by the climbers of CASS, and we were the champion back then and I was inspired by what I saw from the team we have, having the spirit of teamwork and perseverance to never give up with one common goal and that is to win. That was the reason I want to adopt the name CASS Arachnids, because me, being the Governor I want that spirit, that character to be present also with the CASS team for the coming Palakasan. That being a CASS Arachnid, we climb even the steepest mountain or even the hardest trail or terrain and never give up in spite of all the trials and hardships that we will encounter. CASS Arachnids will prevail”, said Jagie Giganto, former CASS Governor. Yurey Paalisbo, a board member from year 2001-2002 said “during Jagie Giganto's time as Governor, I was the CUACOM Chair and CASS was the first college to have their own name. I remembered the cheerleaders were practicing & trying to execute the human pyramid- that's when I suggested the group be called Arachnid.” The cheerleaders that time were like real spiders as they climbed upward. So, it was during that time that the CASS EC officers decided to carry the name. During the following years, the other colleges followed this strategy and decided to have their own unifying name. CASS' declaration of their adaptation of the Arachnid as a symbol also became timely with the movie premiere of Spiderman, bearing the theme “With great power comes great responsibility.” Behind its success, criticisms stirred up. Carrying “Arachnids” as a unifying

name for CASS produced nitpickers from some faculty of the college, other CASS-EC officers, and students from CASS and even from other colleges. But that is something expected. The only unexpected thing was that one of the members of the CASS wall climbing team who happened to be an original member of CASS climbers took it negatively that no permission was asked from the other officers to adopt the name. “Young as I am, with arrogance also for being the governor, I did not value what she said but responded sarcastically that the climbing team should even be proud that it was their team name I adopted and not any other name. The other team members also went my side so I left the issue behind. But looking back, I should have apologized and found out she's somehow right, I should've asked for their permission for it was them who chose and used the name. Furthermore, that is one of my legacies to the college. I left behind a name that until now the college is using: a symbol of strength, perseverance and unity,” Jagie concluded. The first time CASS carried the name Arachnids in the Palakasan 2002 Cheerleading competition, they took home the Champion and the grand prize of Php 10,000.00. They were wearing a combination of white and red with a black web. The following year, they changed colors from red to green, staying true to CASS's color, and still bagged the Champion. In 2004, CASS Arachnids reverted back to white and red but due to issues concerning the results of the Cheerleading competition, CASS boycotted the 2004 Palakasan. Had CASS been declared as the Champion in the cheerleading event, they would have attained a grand slam since using the name Arachnids. “Arachnid has always been an appropriate symbol for CASS. Even if you kill the spider, the impact of its sting will still

affect many. In that way, it can always draw attention,” expressed Ezra Macaraeg who served as Vice Governor, 2001-2002 and Governor, 2002-2003. He even added “The arachnid tradition is what matters the most. It is because of this tradition that one has to look-back to CASS. An Arachnid is a crusader, it continues to weave its web, thus this notion makes it valuable to continue the tradition of winning.” He continued to opined “We should turn a losing team into a winning team BY HEART. If the participation of the students, faculty and the leadership of the CASS-EC is weak, then we are all weak. Therefore, we should not let personal interest to win over our goals. Always maintain participation and support for CASS, map-out strategies, sacrifice, win or lose – this comprises the HEART OF A WINNING TEAM.” CASS Cheerleading Team carrying the Arachnids symbol won 1st place in the 2002 and 2003 Dunkin' Donuts Interschool Cheerdance Competition and because of CASS’ winning streaks from Institute events

I Survived! by

Chanda Pearl B. Simeon

When my friend, Cleve, asked me to write a personal essay in the hope of inspiring my fellow CASS students, I was honored, at the same time, challenged. For how would I effectively write so as to encourage thousands of different souls? You know, I'm just an ordinary student in the university, striving hard to finish my studies, all in the pursuit of landing a stable land someday. I am no amazing and exceptional student, but I know of one thing, I know what my dreams are. And that, my friends, I believe, is where we should all begin. I have always believed in what Paulo Coelho wrote- “when you really want something, the universe conspires in your favor.” It is true. Start asking yourself what you really want to achieve for the semester, for the year, for the next years, then the next thing you know, everything's falling into place and you are a step closer every day. But here's the thing, when you already have figured out what your goal is, stick to it, no cheating. Know your priorities. First things first. Of course our world does not revolve in the corners of the campus alone. We have friends who are bringing with them the entire world's inviting temptations. The funny thing is that these temptations come

out like mushrooms at times that we have tons of paper works to do, study for exams, and prepare for reports. How about a movie date later? A weekend getaway at the nearest pool? Perhaps party rock at the disco? Or would a sound sleep sound real good? I am not saying that we should deprive ourselves with these things; it's just that if we have exams tomorrow, then burn the candle at both ends, all other things can wait, even the bed. Reach for the stars. So that just in case you fall, you still have a hold of the moon, not to mention the clouds are there to catch you. I had this 3.0 midterm exam grade in one of my major subjects. Surely, I was not able to get a grip of the moon nor were the clouds comforting my back, but at least I tried reaching for the stars. The good thing about falling is that it gives us the very reason to reach for the stars again. Do your best. This is the simplest advice of all but the hardest to maintain. Many times we feel like being cheated and played upon by the world. If we don't study for the exams, we fail; if we study hard, we still fail. Hey fate, are you kidding me? No, nobody is playing dice here. Between the two, studying then failing is to page 10

to City events; from Cheerleading and Cheerdancing to being crowned as Ms. IIT, the “Arachnids Fever” started. We have looked into the history of how the name “Arachnids” was formed. It rooted from the most interesting events in CASS way back then. It is something that cannot be easily replaced with another name. It links the past with the present and to the future. All of us should be very proud of the name that we carry: a name that not just simply represents us but binds us together. We should do whatever it takes to nurture our web for connectivity and uphold the values of being a pure-blooded weaver of our web, our home, our CASS. P.S. CASSayuran was born out of the need to document the achievements of CASS especially after CASS won the Ms. IIT title for five consecutive years; for always topping the wall-climbing events; for always being on the spotlight in the cheerleading then in cheerdance competition. CASSayuran thanks Arachnid alumni for willingly sharing the history. Cleve C. Ulalo

I came to IIT like a stranger, knowing just a few people. Facing a new world, new friends, new classmates, newteachers and new environment where everything feels like different from before. However, college life gave me a new family-my friends, classmates, teachers and boardmates. They became the substitute of my family whom I depend on when I was at home. I appreciated the time they were willing to help when I felt low and could not get along with my lessons. I felt as though I The author and Pol. Sci.’s Papa Bear, Prof. David N. 9 TRAVELOGUE: A Trip to Remember (Mr. & Ms. IIT 2011 Hong Kong Trip)

Winning the Miss IIT 2011 was still a surprise for me. It gave me another reason to live life with hopes and dreams; nothing is impossible. A trip to Hong Kong and Macau was my grand prize along with Mr. Chard Ebenezer Tesoro, the Mr. IIT 2011. Prof. Christian TN Aguado, the Chairman of the committee and Mr. Renebel O. Labadisos accompanied us on the said trip. It was on the 14th day of April 2012 when our journey to Hong Kong and Macau started. It was indeed a long ight, from Mactan Airport in Cebu to Hong Kong; arriving in Hong Kong, we were relieved with the

beautiful scenery from the international airport, there I met people with different races. We were housed for three days and two nights at the very convenient and relaxing Regal Ragency Hotel. After checking into the hotel, we eventually rested for a while and after sometime headed directly to roam around the city, took pictures, and enjoyed the scenery. Then, we looked for a restaurant for our dinner. It took as a while in choosing which particular restaurant we should go to and what food we should choose because we don't understand their language. Luckily we met a Hong Kong local who speaks English and he assisted us. On our way back to the hotel, we passed by a Catholic Church and we decided to visit the church and to thank God for our safe travel. On the second day, I actually missed the Hong Kong and Macau city tour of Mr. and Miss. IIT 2011, since I have to be with my aunt and uncle who is already a resident of Hong Kong.My father allowed me to extend my stay for 14 days along with my cousins. Mr. IIT Chard Tesoro, Prof. Aguado and Mr. Labadisos toured the two cities and Chad said it was a very splendid one since they went to the Avenue of Stars, Jewelry

Industry, and Victoria Hall to name some of the places they visited. In Macau, they were amazed of the awesome spots like the Macau towers, St. Paul Church, some places which marked that Macau was colonized by the Portuguese and the very famous Venetian Hotel. Even if I was not able to join the tour of Mr. & Ms. IIT, I still enjoyed my stay in my aunt's house for I was able to experience different things. My uncle treated us to Ocean Park and a tour in Giant Buddha and at the Old Hong Kong. I felt so happy and blessed because I was able to explore the different places in Hong Kong together with my cousins and aunt. As I traveled back to the Philippines, I'm still happy even if I'm leaving Hong Kong because I have with me the experiences and bonding moments with my cousins and also with Mr. IIT, Mr. Labadisos and especially Prof. Aguado. Every little thing that happened was worth keeping and cherished for. That was a priceless experience which I would forever keep. P.S. I would like to grab the opportunity to thank the Suffari Travel and Tours especially to Ms. Lleechuan L. King, the proprietor, for sponsoring our trip and for the support she extended in making Mr. and Ms. MSU-

Tête-a-tête with Amegs by Knacky July D. Hermodo Have you heard of Amegs, the socalled “most popular” group in the college? Or are you a member? If yes, how much do you know about your group? If no, then, continue reading; as one social networker stressed out, “Taga-CASS ka kung kaila ka sa Amegs nga grupo.” Amegs is short for “All Males Embedded in a Girl's Soul.” It started last semester, few weeks before the CASS Paskuhan 2011. Von Omega, one of their pioneering members, shared that their group was formed because of their regular meetups at the CASS Executive Council office to volunteer especially for the said upcoming event. Also, Von pointed out that despite the fact that most of them claimed to be a “woman in spirit,” they have different skills and talents and most of all a heart to contribute help (most especially in cultural events) or coordinate with the EC for College and Institute events. From that, they have decided to form the group. With that idea, they try to develop their social interaction and friendship with others while showing the College how important unity is in the diversity of the Arachnids. There are almost twenty members of the group; most of them are CASS gays, others come from other colleges too. Currently, the active members from CASS: Von Omega, Rean Nuenay, Romel Limjoco, and Rm Sobebe from the Department of Psychology; Rollan Lagarbe and Dennis Kwong from Gen Ed; Jerome Galigao and RG Apas from the Department of Sociology; Carlo Cabalit and Ryan Tundag from the Department of History; and Benjamine Corro and Kristine Buenviaje from the Department of Political Science. Amegs does not have any leader or president but the founders are Von and Ryan. They are planning for the recognition of the

group as an official Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, a n d Tr a n s g e n d e r ( L G B T ) g r o u p o r organization of the Institute hopefully by the next academic year. “To serve as a model organization primarily acting as a support system for lesbians, gays, bisexuals, metrosexuals, transsexuals and transgendered students, providing quality services to its members, and forwarding legal and social changes in the university all for creating an environment that is non-discriminating and accepting to the community” is Amegs' mission. While the vision states “We, as individuals and as valued members, envision MSU-IIT as an LGBT-friendly university where all students, regardless of gender preference, should be able to self-actualize as an individual. We envision students to treat LGBTs fairly, with no discrimination in whatever form, and be accepted as a valued member of the studentry.” Amegs was responsible for the cheer “Vega CASS.”

Tabo sa IIT and Night Café: Party All Day by Cleve C. Ulalo

Every year, the Tabo sa IIT has become a fondly frequented place during the MSU-IIT Charter Week Celebration. This year, Tabo sa IIT and Night Café opened on July 9 and lasted until July 12. The IDS MultiPurpose Hall was transformed into a mini market for the Tabo and during night time, the Night Café is situated in front of the main library. Tabo sa IIT made IITians appreciate affordable foods, such as Piyaya, Barquillos, ice cream, and cookies. Inexpensive items such as printed t-shirts, ukay-ukays, key chains, mini wallets, different accessories, native items and many more were also sold at the Tabo. Night Café featured different bands from different colleges thus every night, people listen to live music while enjoying their dinner at food stalls that sells barbecue and puso (hanging rice). As one student twitted, the night café brought an experience that can be remembered. Students twitted their thanks to KASAMA for giving the the opportunity to showcase their talents. The Tabo sa IIT and Night Cafe are two things about the annual Charter Day celebration that are greatly anticipated by every IITian.

IIT 2011 a great success. The trip could not have also been possible without the effort of the chairman of Mr. and Miss. IIT 2011 committee Prof. Christian T.N Aguado. Thank you sir, for this once in a lifetime opportunity. Also to my family, friends, love one, mentor, Sociology family and to my fellow IITians for the trust and support they gave me, and most especially to our Almighty father, for without you all, all these things wouldn't be possible. God Bless and Mabuhay ARACHNIDS!

Gabi ng Sining: Boasts IIT Talents by Steffi Dawn Ilagan & Danica Vallejo

As night darkened the earth, MSUIIT gymnasium overowed with strong scent of excitement as the crowd entered the venue for the most highlighted event of the 44th Charter Day Celebration of Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology with its theme: Going Beyond Borders, the Gabi Ng Sining. A warm message from the MSU-IIT Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Edgar Ignacio opened the event. After his message, the invocation was led by the IDS Ringkaran with its ballet dancers and the Echoes Band. It was then followed by the singing of the national anthem led by the Octava Choral Society. A video montage on the different performing groups of the Institute was showcased as a teaser. The production number of all the resident performing groups of MSU-IIT gradually unveiled with the MSU-IIT Lions Cheerleading Squad, Dance Society, Kalimulan and IPAG performers that were accompanied with the music of Ringkaran, Echoes, Octava, and the beat of the IPAG, and Kalimulan musical ensemble. Before the show continued, a very inspiring message was given by MSU-IIT Chancellor Dr. Sukarno D. Tanggol. He passionately greeted everyone “Happy Birthday sa ating lahat, mabuhay IIT”. The MSU-IIT Lions started their march through the center stage with their breath-taking stunts. The IDS Ringkaran rendered their simple yet best song performance on stage together with its two graceful ballet dancers. It was followed by the dance performance of the Dance Society as they intensely make their different routines on stage. The Echoes Band also gave their best out of the beautiful and pleasing voices which dominated the whole area of the gymnasium. Guinto presented his paper enntitled “Yeyeleng: A Morpholigical Analysis of Iligan Gay Talk.” Mr. Guinto's presentation was the most applauded because the audience was able to easily relate to his study. The half-day event is done every semester and is organized by the CASS College Research and Extension Committee (CREC) and Department Research and Extension Committee (DREC). This activity is part of strengthening

CASS' aim for excelling in the field of research as well as acknowledging the college's competent graduate and undergraduate researchers. The Department of History spearheaded by its chairperson Dr. Ma. Cecilia B. Tangian served as the colloquium's convenor.

Freshmen from page 2 Indeed freshmen are lucky, for the Commission on Higher education ranks MSU-IIT as the 7th placer in its list of top universities in the Philippines, excelling in fields such as Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Teaching Education as boasted by Department of Student Affairs Acting Director Prof. Edward Banawa. And for that reason, CHEd granted IIT a 1 billion peso budget for the sole purpose of constructing a new building for the College of Engineering.

Students shouted and cheered as their bets performed. There were the heart-warming songs of the vocal trio, the very entertaining performances of the doble kara, the energizing pop dance and the tensionbreaking wanna be. Each category showcased the talents of the CASS students. In this competition, there is only one conquering society that will be crowned; one who showed the most exceptional and the most surpassing performances. ABEO was fortuitously enthroned as the overall champion.

CASS Conducts Emergency Drills by Dimple G. Cabasis Throughout the first semester, IIT conducted different drills to prepare IITians if actual situations happen. CASS was given its drill last August 10. Prior to the date, all students in CASS were oriented on what to do if an earthquake happens. Students were informed to drop, cover, and hold. Posters showing the three steps were posted on bulletin boards as well as on every classroom's information board. Teachers were told that every bell rings symbolize instructions on what to do. Three

short consecutive bell rings would be the queue for drop, cover, and hold. A long bell ring means everyone should start evacuating the premises. Prof. Cesar Miguel, Institute Safety Officer and Prof. Rene Jose Padro, CASS Safety Officer organized the drill. The College Red Cross Team served as rescuers and provided first aid for “victims.” The Institute Clinic also supported the activity.

Mr. Bolanio took the initiative of explaining to the crowd especially for the benefit of freshmen that he is not Mr. MSU-IIT 2011. He told everyone that Mr. SET 2011 is Mr. MSU-IIT 2011 but could not make it to the pageant. Mr. CON 2011 who is Mr. st MSU-IIT 2011 1 runner up could not also make it so as the third in line, he stood for them. I remembered a text message which goes, “The poorest person in the world is not the one who has no money, but the one who has no dreams at all.” Well as for me, this time, I am not poor at all. Do not let yourself be below poverty line, your dreams are just one poke away.

Fliptop from page 2 The Free Style Rap Battle tie-breaker round was decided not only by the three judges but most importantly by the audience., So when Reyes delivered the final line, “Dito sa CASS love one another, CASSikatan higher than any other, Dito sa CASS tayo ang pinakamalaka,.” the crowd cheered and celebrated. And the judges gave their final verdict in favor of the Historical Society with a score of 89-79. And as the CASS students slowly dispersed after the game, smiles and laughs remained on everyone's lips, remembering every line that the rappers had just said. It was not an event doomed with a competitive atmosphere, it was an event in which CASS Arachnids become one – all together again.

All we have to do is to be strong, that at some point of time, we'll be on top again. So dli nata kelangan na murag mag crab mentality. Kung naa sila sa taas, then go, we appreciate that. As one university, let's think that we belong in one banner. Let's think that we're in a college under the MSU-IIT. As students of this Institution, we represent MSU-IIT, taas kaayo ilang pananaw sa ato ba.” Maggie shared her advocacy as the new MS. IIT: IIT is already a progressive university, but then looking deeper into it, the

colleges have conicts usually arising after major events like Palakasan and Charter Day. “I just want to be the voice of the students. Why do we have to compete inside the university when in fact, we belong to one university? If you want to achieve something as a university, we have to maintain peace among the colleges. Arguing should already cease. If we want to be heard, let's voice it out, let's listen to the other side, and then, you know, make compromises.” New experiences lead us to new learnings, new ideas to share, new people to give our hearts to. Learn to embrace things as they are. Love them with all your heart. Judge yourself – LOSER OR WINNER.

11 Psych Graduate Brings Glory to Iligan by Cleve C. Ulalo “Obstacles are those frightening things you see when you take your eye of the goal.”

“Every practice, I grade myself. Before everything, you must be ready,” these were the words of the inspiring swimmer Riza Hope I. Molo who belongs to Batch 2012 of the BS Psychology Program. Recently, Ms. Riza was remarkably known for her participation on the upcoming swimming competition entitled “Rescue 2012 Life Saving World Championships” to be held in Adelaide, Australia this November 2-18, 2012. Ms. Riza shared that she started joining swimming competition at the age of six at the Novice Swimming Competition and attended trainings such as the Training for Batang Pinoy, Palaro, Milo Olympics and the Swim and Survive Philippine Life Saving. Along with all the trainings she had, she also met some obstacles such as financial, hardships during trainings, frustrations, and pains that come with the trainings. She is motivated in joining swimming competitions by the doubts of others, especially those people who don't believe in her capability just because she is a big woman. She confided that her greatest motivation is her passionate love of sports. She joined for the upcoming Life Saving World Championships last summer,

April 2012 in Bacolod City as a solo competitor from Mindanao. She was chosen as one of the Philippine team by winning four events namely 100m Mannequin Carry, 100m Mannequin Tow, and 50m Without Fins for the Pool category and Run Swim Run for the Beach Category. Pageants. This word creates pictures of beautiful people walking like kings and queens on stage ramps. Sophisticatedly walking with glamor and wit along with their gorgeous smiles and winking eyes. Beauty, Brains, Character - the qualities that the Mr. and Ms. IIT pageant adopt as a paradigm and is a must for every candidate to possess. Each pair is indeed the true cream of the crop of their respective schools and colleges. But this year's pageant has a unique story to tell, behind the stage walks and fancy talks. If you have been an avid spectator of the pageant, and have come across the mini-theater and watch the Mr. and Ms. IIT Speech Contest, as well as in the crowd during the presentation of the candidates last Palakasan Opening and haven't missed the Pageant Night itself, it would be very impossible if you haven't notice this pair from the College of Nursing. What makes them awesomely noticeable, aside from their gorgeous looks, is their identical family names. The idea may sound very rare, but yes, they are siblings who joined the pageant together. Ms. Maggie Benazir O. Bonsubre, crowned as Ms. IIT 2012 and Mr. Mikhail Ronald O. st Bonsubre, Mr. IIT, 1 -runner up are from the Little Hongkong of the South, Pagadian City. Mikhail is the eldest among four siblings. Maggie is next to him and is the only daughter in the family. Both are Junior students of CON. This pair landed their way to MSU-IIT after transferring from one school to another. According to Maggie, they chose IIT not only because it is just four hours away from their hometown, but more importantly, they believe that it offers the quality of education

that everyone deserves. Maggie was hailed as the 1 st runner-up of the Search for Mr. and Ms. CON last February. She represented her college for this year's Mr. and Ms. IIT pageant because the current Ms. CON titlist has already graduated last March. On the other hand, Mikhail was appointed by the CON-EC as their representative for their college. He confessed his hesitance in joining the pageant at first; it was for the reason that he preferred playing with the basketball team more than joining pageants. “Captain ko sa basketball team namo, so nideny jud ko,” he admitted. When the two of them were asked about their feelings in joining the pageant together, Maggie automatically described the awkwardness that she felt about being with her brother. But as they went along, the idea of them being siblings has become their edge knowing that they are already comfortable with each other. When it comes to their gestures during the pageant, Maggie said, “Murag symbol of being casual, nga murag dli mi kelangan mag pretend na niani mi ka close and all.” On the other hand, Mikhail's point of view is he considered the experience as an opportunity to experience something new, “pero this time kay bonding with new friends, new faces then kami kay usually, pamilya magkuyog then karon kay it's all new people man gud.” As for being a protective brother, Mikhail emphasized that he is not overprotective that he limits his sister all the time. He treats his sister fairly and guides her firmly. He also acknowledged that the presence of his sister boosts his confidence for the pageant. He trusts in the idea that his sister's experiences in joining pageants are enough to make him feel fine along the way.

He said that, “I had to be spiritually and mentally prepared first and what I did was read the Bible and pray a lot to boost up my faith in God. I also had to read and study a lot about the nursing concepts and answer as many questions as I could during our reviews to boost my confidence in taking the exam. There were also pressures coming from my family, relatives, and friends. On my part, these were all good motivations to help me stay focus in my review. I just did not stop believing that everything would turn out right.” CON has been bringing honor and glory to the Institute since 2008 by consistently being in the top three performing nursing schools in the country.

Mikhail was also very proud of his sister but he honestly said that he would have been prouder if the both of them made it. “Things already happened and His will has been done,” he said. On the other hand, the idea of his answer about respect was derived from his experiences. They admitted that the both of them agree with each other only when it comes to food. They claimed to have different personalities and preferences. Maggie is the girly and the home buddy while Mikhail is the sporty and the social bug. When it comes to misunderstandings, both of them cannot think of anything about “major quarrels.” They may have little disagreements about each other but never did they come to the point of hating each other for more than a day. Their parents taught them to as much as possible avoid quarrels and fights among them. Maggie's most memorable moment during the pageant is every time her brother is called for an award, “Most memorable sguro sa ako kay kato gitwag sya sa top 3. Yehey naapil ming duha sa top 3, ma-proud amo parents.” Mikhail's message for the students of IIT “You just have to do our best. Do our best to become good sons/daughter of our parents, to become good students of our teachers, to become a good classmate to our classmates, to become a good friend to our friends and also to become good servant of God.” to page 10

Engineering graduate Al Mon Dahan made it to the top with 88.55 percent rate in the Metallurgical Engineering Board Examination last August 27, 2012. He was followed by a UP graduate with an 86.50 percent rate. The examination took three days to finish, from August 25-27, 2012. In a quick interview, Engr. Dahan shared that he can't believe what he has achieved. With his performance as a student, he shared that it was not a good example for students who desire to succeed in life. Engr. Dahan shared that he first enrolled as a BS Accountancy student for a year but later found that he got the wrong course and decided to enter the world of Chemical Engineering Technology. It took him four years to finish the said course for some failure, withdrawn, dropped and 3.00 grades. Despite those, he convinced himself to do something that not only he would be proud of but as well as his family. Taking up BS Metallurgical Engineering was not in his plan since his grades were rejected by the Department he wants to pursue. He has no choice but to enroll in the BS Met Eng program even if he had no knowledge about the course. He was offered scholarship by EMAREAL Gold when he reached his last year in college. When asked to give a message for students, this is what he said: “Just enjoy your college life, try to maintain the balance of your time, love your course and never forget Him up above.” He also shared his formula in life which is TRUST WITH G O D + P E R S O N A L R E L AT I O N S H I P = ABUNDANT LIFE. With those blessings, he is so thankful especially to God for giving him another chance to change his life.

NCCA partners ABEO for Bukambibig 2012 by Floraime Pantaleta

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) partners with MSU-IIT's AB English Organization (ABEO) of the College of Arts and Social Sciences for their annual “Bukambibig”. The poetry reading event held last August 13 at MSUIIT's College of Education Amphitheater featured poems from prominent poets in the country namely Anthony L. Tan, Christine F. Godinez-Ortega, and German V. Gervacio. Also featured were poems of Nancy N. Allen, Gracian Paul R. Tidor, and Lewey T. Jimoya. After the opening remarks by Professor Rosemarie B. Purganan, MSU-IIT's English Department Chair, Christine Godinez-Ortega, the Vice Head and OIC of the National Comission for Culture and Arts, also one of the poets to read her poems in the event, delivered a message saying she is glad to have the event happen in MSU-IIT and then thanked the audience for their participation. The poetry reading commenced after the introduction of the first set of readers by third year AB English student, Katherine Aine G. Codas. A recipient of the First Prize of Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature in the Poetry category for his

“Poems for Muddas” in 1993 among many other literature awards and citations, Anthony L. Tan, who was also teaching at the MSU-IIT's College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) Department of English was the first one called in to read three of his poems. “Crossing the River”, a poem that was transcreated on stage by the Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG) and one that won the second prize in the 2002 Palanca was the first one to be read followed by “Torch Song” and “A Letter to Ling”. The second reader who also teaches at the Department of English of CASS and a regular panelist at Iligan National Writers Workshop, Christine F. GodinezOrtega read first a poem by her deceased husband entitled “Tinago Pool” then proceeded to read two of her poems. First was “The Hours” which she says was inspired by the novel Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf and the book by Michael Cunningham of the same title as the poem. The next poem was entitled “Poem for Lippo.” German V. Gervacio, playwright, fictionist, and poet, recipient Palanca Awards for both poetry and fiction, and

associate professor of the Department of Filipino of CASS, read his poems “Itay” and “Maniniwala ka ba sa Madyik?” The second set of poets, introduced by AB English student, April Al Ian T. Jacob, was composed by Professor Nancy N. Allen, MSU-IIT AB English graduate and Cebuano poet, Gracian Paul R. Tidor, and ABEO VicePresident and student writer, Lewey Jimoya. Nancy N. Allen, saying her genre was gothic, read her poems entitled “Post Mortem Grief”, “Labyrinth”, and “Ghosting.” Gratian Paul R. Tidor who wrote his poems in the local dialect of Cebuano read “Pagpanglaba,” “Pagpangita sa Kalipay”, and “Kabahin sa akong Damgo.” Lewey Jimoya read his poems “The Daily Hypocrites”, “She, the Friend”. His last poem was a Cebuano translation of the poem “Richard Cory” by Edwin Arlington Robinson of the same title. An open forum was conducted for

20 minutes after the poetry reading. A Time Capsule ceremony of the AB English Organization (ABEO) then followed initiated by Professor Rabindranath S. Polito and Professor Maria Theresa B. Panzo. The ceremony had students of the organization write their poems which were to be placed inside a time capsule only to be read when they are about to graduate from the program. The book launching of Mr. Gracian Paul R. Tidor followed after the ceremony. His book entitled “Dakop-Dakop sa Kahayag ug Anino” was a collection of Anthony L. Tan's poems in Cebuano. Rabindranath S. Polito gave the closing remarks. (This is the report submitted to the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.)

Two in One Live Shows (Sisa meets Simsimi & Ibyang Alingagngag) by Dimple G. Cabasis

by Pierre Randal Sansarona

buhay Komiks; buhay ang komiks nina Fritz at Eunice

This semester, the Department of Filipino and other Languages through the Artiste group brought to stage two spectacular performances. The group presented “Sisa meets Simsimi” and “Kung Bakit Umakyat sa Overpass si Ibyang Alingagngag.” The plays were written by Prof. German V. Gervacio and directed by Prof. Reynado B. Tiosen. The tragic-comedy plays depicted out-of-this-world characters but with very strong messages on the aftermath of Sendong as well as the life of an IIT student. Sisa meets Simsimi is a story of a mother longing for her two children who left her. If you are familiar with Jose Rizal's famous Noli Me Tangere then surely you already know the character of Sisa. Sisa's character in the play was perfectly acted by Misty Diane Gomez. After all her cries in searching for the lost, she has this idea that a genie in a kettle might help her find her two children. After rubbing a kettle, a genie acted by Marilyn Manggas came out and Sisa gave her wish. But the genie gave Sisa vague information on how to find her lost children. Then Sisa met Madame Tweety acted by Chiesn Kay Serano who is a fortune teller with an entertaining expression which is common to all- “Oh my god!” Since she has the ability to tell something about unknown things, Sisa hoped that Madame Tweety could somehow help her to find where her

children are. Madame Tweety told Sisa that there are three people whom she has lost instead of two. However, Sisa gained nothing from Madame Tweety on how to find her children and was instead introduced to a new personality who could help her to solve her problem and it was Mayor acted by Airen Sajulga, the mayor in their place. The Mayor who is so busy with her phone talking to people with her famous opening line, “Hello, oo si Mayor to, yes, this is me” irritates Sisa. Until such time the Mayor finally talked to Sisa and called SPO123 Lacoste Bebe to help Sisa and brought her to the police station. SPO123 Lacoste Bebe played by Val Patrick Pati-an with his big stomach is so busy playing with his computer instead of serving the public. He left Sisa in the station with a promise that he will find her two lost children but with the condition that Sisa will not do anything like moving her body until the time he comes back. Sisa got so tired of waiting so she took the computer of the policeman and used it to have her own way of finding her children. Sisa then meets Simsimi played by Jestoni Cabalhin. Sisa typed the names of her son and daughter but Simsimi only replied “no response.” Meeting him in person reminds Sisa of her children's past experience that she considered his son Crispin acted by Klint Japhet Lapinig as a very good son as he was always in school. to page 7
