Crazy days of summer... What a summer this has been! It’s finally cooled down, and I’m hoping that by the time I write my next column, we won’t be complaining about how cold it is just yet. But I know it’s coming ... We were so thrilled that so many of you stopped by to see us at the Cass County 4-H Fair to let us know how much you love the Michelle Laird DIALS services we provide. It made the hot week we Editor/publisher spent in the Merchants Building well worth it. I spend a lot of time thinking about how to explain what and why we do what we do. Last week, I read something that triggered a lightbulb. One of the things that I passionately believe is that as residents, we should all be knowledgable ambassadors for our community. Especially during election seasons, there’s a lot of talk about job creation and economic development and progressive change. But much of that change starts with us. We, as individual citizens, have far more power to shape the perceptions of our community than we give ourselves credit for having. I’ve written before about the pink Post-It that’s stuck to my monitor —”Promote things that impact the community in positive ways or inspire people to instigate positive change.” Through the Cass County Communication Network, we’re able to help people connect in a multitude of ways. Yesterday, someone posted a photo of storm damage on our Facebook page, we sent it on to the Street Department, and the mayor left a comment letting citizens know when the damaged stoplight would be fixed. Just an example of the power we, as individuals, have to instigate positive change. This month, I challenge you to be a knowledgable ambassador for our community. Take one piece of information we share through our newspaper, our websites and our text messages and share it with someone else. Tell someone about a local event, or a great local place to shop or eat. Then, go a step further, and if you see something that we haven’t shared, tell us about it, so we can help spread the word. There are great things happening everyday in Cass County. Let’s work together to tell the world!
