I saw it on Facebook... It was at the top of my news feed on Facebook on Tuesday, January 12. “Praying for the people of Haiti.” Immediately, I turned to Google to tell me why. An earthquake. 7.0 on the Richter Scale. Twelve aftershocks. Thousands feared dead. First, there were prayers. Then, there were ways to help. People right here in Cass County were among those using the world’s largest social networks to spread the word about a nation 1700 miles away. In the few short days of 2010 we’ve experienced, Cass County residents have also used social networking sites to tell each other about issues in our own community. When Logansport Fire Chief Bob McMinn suffered a heart attack while on a call just MICHELLE LAIRD three days into the New Year, word (and support) spread quickly on Facebook. When EDITOR/PUBLISHER mailboxes in the county exploded, people used Facebook to alert their friends. I’ve seen posts asking where to find recycling locations in Cass County, and posts asking how to get involved in local events. If you thought social networking sites were just for people to post what they had for lunch, think again. Twitter is another site that gives us 140 characters per post to tell the world what’s happening. It’s amazing how much can be said. Do these things replace traditional media sources? I don’t think so. As one of our fans posted on our fan page —”no one should depend solely on one source for information.” After all, as soon as I read it on Facebook, I turned to someone that could lead me to mainstream media coverage. Logansport’s comprehensive plan calls for ways to “keep Logansport technologically current.” It seems our residents are ready working on that.

Status of Haiti children’s hospital founded by Cass County couple uncertain Grace Children’s Hospital in Haiti was founded by the late James Snavley and Virginia Snavley Strauch in 1967. The Snavleys were former Cass County residents. According to the organization’s web site, the couple visited the country in 1961 on vacation and then returned to open a small clinic for children with tuberculosis. Today their vision is carried on through the work of International Child Care, which has more than 300 full-time staff working in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the U.S. and Canada. As of press time on Thursday, January 14, the organization had no word on the condition of the hospital following the devastating 7.0 earthquake that struck the Haiti on Tuesday, January 12, 2010.
