Old friends, new fans I love Fair Week. As I write this, our new banner is spread out across the floor of my office, our tote full of fair stuff is gradually filling up with supplies, and I’m totally exhausted trying to get this issue to press. Without a doubt, fair week will be hot and humid. With any luck, it won’t rain. We’ll see people we swear we haven’t seen in years. Michelle Laird DIALS And at the end of the week, we’ll all be so Editor/publisher ready for a detox diet of water and fresh fruits and vegetables that we’ll exclaim, in over-exaggerated tones, that we don’t want to see another lemon shakeup, elephant ear or fried anything until next year. What’s not to love about fair week? If you’re reading this column and you’re a long-time fan of INFO, thank you. If you’re new to INFO and you’re reading this column because we slipped you a copy after you signed up to win Indiana Beach tickets when you stopped by our booth in Merchants Building 1 at the fair (or for any other reason), welcome. Cass County INFO is a free, monthly community newspaper that’s published by Existential Media LLC. INFO, along with our websites, Cass County Calendar and Cass County Online, are part of the Cass County Communication Network, which just celebrated its one year anniversary on July 1. We’re also behind CASSINFO texts — the text message alerts that let you know about breaking news, traffic info and great local deals. Our publications have been around a lot longer than that — Cass Network is just a clearer way of expressing all the various options we have to help connect you with information about what’s going on in our community. I’ve said this before but I’ll say it again for new fans we might have acquired along the way. There’s a pink sticky note stuck to my monitor that reminds me that our mission is to “promote things that impact community in positive ways or inspire people to instigate positive change.” This summer, it seems like that’s becoming more important than ever. There’s an election on the horizon, and there are many discussions being held that will impact our community’s future. We’re looking forward to seeing our long-time fans and spreading the word about what we do to new fans this year at the Cass County 4-H Fair. Can’t wait to see you there!

Moving forward One of the first phases of enhancing Logansport’s 18th Street Corridor is now possible thanks to a $1.8 million dollar award from the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). Mayor Mike Fincher says the city was notified in late June that they are the recipient of nearly $2 million in Group III federal funds that may be used as reimbursement for the project. The city’s application for funding presented concerns for the intersection of 18th and Main Streets, with the opening of the Ivy Tech campus, and included needs for pedestrian facilities. Funds for the project will be available in October 2013 and may account for up to 80 percent of costs. The remaining 20 percent of the funds will come from money left over from the Ivy Tech Bond Issue, which was

City receives first round of funds for 18th St. project

The 18th St. Corridor plan, unveiled in 2010, calls for converting the four-way stop at the intersection of 18th and Main Streets to a roundabout. re-dedicated by the City Council in December 2010. The 18th and Main Street project is an intersection improvement with a consideration to convert the four-way stop to a modern roundabout. The project will also include replacement of two drainage culverts in need of

repair, pedestrian crosswalks and a multi-use path connecting to Ivy Tech Community College. According to a press release from the city, the culverts are in poor condition and have been scheduled for replacement but in need of funding for completion. The culvert work would be a cooperative effort

with Cass County and could improve drainage problems for businesses near the intersection. This project will continue the improvements near the Ivy Tech campus as part of a larger 18th Street corridor plan that also encompasses an underpass at the Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks between Pottawatomie Road and Woodlawn Avenue. The plan will improve the entry to the Hoosier Heartland Highway from Logansport’s eastern commercial shopping district and address delays and safety concerns for the railroad crossing. The 18th and Main Street design will accommodate suggestions from the seventeen-person Steering Committee and input from the public from the meetings. Design work will begin on the project in the fall.

Discussions concerning generating plant dominate conversations

Over the next couple of months, the Logansport Municipal Utilities are likely to be

REMINDER

a hot topic in conversations locally. During the May and June meetings, the utility service board has been discussing a proposal from Duke Energy that would offer discounted rates in exchange for increasing the amount of electricity LMU purchases from Duke and closing the

generating plant. The unsolicited proposal from Duke Energy led Superintendent Paul Hartman to ask the board to approve a request for proposals during the June meeting. Hartman said after news of Duke’s proposal became public, he had verbal offers from a number of people regarding the electrical generating plant. Officials are quick to reiterate that there is no sale involved — we already purchase electricity from Duke that is distributed by LMU.

Proposals are due in July and are expected to be discussed in the days leading up to August 31, when Duke’s offer expires. Board chairman Tom Slusser’s term expires on July 31 and the Logansport city council’s rules committee will meet at noon on July 8 to discuss appointing a replacement. The last board meeting took place before a packed house. The board will meet again at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26 on the third floor of the Logansport City Building.

The roll-off recycling bin at the Cass County 4-H Fairgrounds will be removed during the fair. The bin will be returned Monday, July 18. Bins are available at Tall Sycamore campground, Oak Ridge Recycling at the landfill, Walton, Galveston and Pioneer Elementary.

MWRL coming to Fairgrounds Mow-Wheelin’ Racing League is making its first trip to the historic Cass County Fairgrounds on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 with a 7 p.m. start time. “We’re really excited to get into the Cass County Fair,” Club President Pascal Moon, of Twelve Mile, said. “We’ve wanted to get in there for a while, but we just lacked the club support until we met up with Mow-Wheelin’ guys.” MWRL is based out of Roann, Ind., and races a summer circuit around the different fairs, as well as a maintaining its fundraising efforts at their home tracks of Roann and Converse. “We have a pretty good group of guys that run pretty regularly,” Moon said. “From Cass County alone, we have probably 20 of the regular drivers. nd since it’s a fair race, we’ll open it up so the modified drivers can come and run with us.” Four classes will take center stage: IMOW, Briggs, Super Stock and the Modified. The IMOW class is a cost-efficient class, running governed motors and an 8-to-1 final gear ratio. The Briggs Class must run a traditional lawnmower chassis and have a shiftable transmission. Super Stock mowchines can be rail built, use horizontal shaft motors and run centrifugal clutches and torque converters. The modified class can run four-wheeler motors, as well as a rail chassis and non-lawnmower tires. “Even the IMOWs, our slowest class, still get upwards of 22 miles and hour,” Moon said. “These aren’t your every day grasscutters by any means.” As a special fan treat, MWRL will have a pit party in which the crowd can come down, meet the drivers and look the machines over more closely. Racing begins at 7 p.m. For more information, log onto the club’s website at www.mow-wheelin.com or follow them on facebook.
