“We could have used that money for ...” When someone gives you a gift, the polite thing to do is to say thank you. Recently, we received word that Logansport was awarded a one milMichelle lion dollar grant to be Laird DIALS Editor/publisher used toward completion of the Eel River Run Trail. That should have warranted a pretty big thank you. Instead, it incited anger in some — how could we accept a million dollars for a trail

when we’re talking about cutting public safety and charging people to pick up their trash? It seems like everyone has some idea about how we could or should use the money. After all, “those are our tax dollars.” But that’s not how grants work. It’s true that a lot of grant money does come from tax dollars. But grants are similar to scholarships in that they’re awarded for specific things. If you’re going to school for veterinary medicine, you probably wouldn’t apply for a music scholarship, (unless you

were a double major, of course.) Just like students compete for scholarships, communities compete for the grant funding that’s available. Various agencies and organizations find out what grants are available, then they figure out which ones their projects might be eligible for, write grants and apply for them. Our communities have received a variety of grants as part of the Community Development Block Program. See MONEY on page 11.

Through the Cass County Communication Network, we try to promote a variety of events and activities that take place in the commumelissa laird nity, and nothing brings creative director a group of people together more so than sports. As a former athlete and avid sports fan, I took it upon myself to begin local high school sports coverage. The first step was to list all athletic events on www.casscountycalendar.com. Whether you’re a student

looking for evening plans, a parent keeping track of their kids’ games, or just a diehard sports fanatic, you can find out who is playing and when on any night of the week. Next I began attending events and snapping some photos. The first sports event I went to was a Logansport volleyball match. I went home, uploaded a few photos from the game to our Facebook page, and the next day, several of the athletes had tagged themselves and commented on the photos. I thought to myself, “Wow. It would have been nice if Facebook existed when I was a high school athlete.”

Since I was getting some good feedback on the photos, I took it a step further. I contacted Greg Fisher, Logansport High School Athletic Director, and asked if the Cass County Communication Network could be added to the list to receive sports results. After he approved, I went home, sat down at my computer and created an interactive sports scoreboard to be displayed on casscountyonline.com, where you can find scores and a brief recap of each sport’s latest match or game. See SCORE on page 11.

What’s the score?

I hear it all the time... I hear it all the time, “Wal-Mart sucks.” (Full disclosure: I used to work at Walmart.) It is really a shame. The most frustrating aspect of this claim is that the only real Tony dyer ad director support typically offered is that Walmart takes away from local business. That, I cannot dispute. However, there are many good things to be said about Walmart, and even more relevantly, our new Walmart here in Cass County. The fact of the matter is, what Walmart takes away from business, it gives back to the community. At the opening ceremony for the new Walmart on Mall Road, there was a brief presentation of checks of various

amounts, ranging from $500 to $2,000. They went to organizations that give back to the community. Some recipients were the Salvation Army, The Logansport Police Department, and LEDF for their new GED program; this day of charity barely skims the surface. This is something that needs acknowledgement. With the new Walmart came new jobs. Approximately 150 new positions have been created since the construction of the new store began. With those jobs, Logansport’s Walmart now employs 320 people in Cass County and the surrounding area. These people are eligible for many benefits including medical coverage, stock options, and vacation allowances. This is something that needs acknowledgment. Now to those people who complain; to

those people who are intimidated, I propose a challenge. Think smarter. If you find yourself under fire as a business owner, market to your audience. Give incentives for consumers to go into your store and shop locally. If you are a die-hard local shopper, be a die-hard local shopper. Don’t forget we have a local grocery store, and a place where we can buy our water softener salt locally. And I ask everyone to remember what has happened here. Another business has invested in Logansport. What more can we ask? Please e-mail me with questions or comments at tony@cassnetwork.com, or give me a call anytime at 765-430-4896!

See what’s planned for 18th Street The City of Logansport will unveil the design plans for a new north-south corridor along 18th St. from US 35 to Broadway later this month. Providing for a safer and quicker flow of traffic is one of several objectives officials Public Unveiling from the City of Logansport have discussed in public forums with residents since Wednesday, Oct. 20 October 2009. The city has held several Ivy Tech meetings to gather feedback about the Community Room community’s needs. Plan designs will address key elements such as transportation and land 6 p.m. use. Also on the agenda is the economic development of the area, highlighting how an improved streetscape will identify 18th St. as a welcoming gateway into Logansport, not only for residents but also for visitors and prospective businesses. American Structurepoint, Inc., the consultant hired to assist in the plan, will present the final multi-phase project, giving attendees the opportunity to speak directly with the steering committee members and project staff about the corridor plan and review plan details. The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 20 in the community room at Ivy Tech Community College.

New store open for business Did you know? On opening day, the Walmart Foundation presented grants totalling $5,500 to the following local organizations: • The Salvation Army, • Cass County Family YMCA, • VFW Post 3790, • Logansport High School Music Boosters, • Emmaus Mission Center, • Logansport Police Department • Logansport Economic Development Foundation.

Logansport’s new Walmart opened for business with much fanfare on Wednesday, Oct. 13. Eight associates who’ve worked at the store since its original opening in 1989 were on hand to help cut the ribbon. The store features a full line of groceries, including a bakery and deli, and more than 30 merchandise departments. Leased areas include a SmartStyles Family Hair Salon and a Subway restaurant. Convenience services include a pharmacy with two drive-through lanes, digital photo processing center and Walmart Connect Center. The 152,000 square foot store features a number of environmentally-friendly features in its design, including 194 skylights and LED lighting. The cement used in the concrete flooring is made with recycled materials, and the floor’s finish reduces the need for chemical cleaners. Low-flow toilets and faucets reduce the water used in the bathrooms. The new store also operates a recycling program and will promote sustainable product purchases. It’s open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week October at 240 Mall Rd.

MONEY, from page 3 This federal program provides annual grants on a formula basis to units of local government and states. Cities with less than 50,000 people and counties with populations of less than 200,000 can apply for the grants, which can be used for specific projects like construction or reconstruction of streets, water and sewer facilities, neighborhood centers, recreational facilities or other public works. Last December, the City of Logansport received a grant for $600,000 for a sewer rehabilitation project. The way I see it, the grants are there, and other communities are going to continue to apply for them Criticizing our local leaders for accepting them isn’t the answer. If the argument is that

ment will host a Tox-Away Day at the Logansport High School Parking Lot from 9 a.m. - noon. This event is handled on a first-come, first serve basis. DONATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Items that will be accepted include but will not be limited to: paints, thinners, solvents, paint removers, oil, antifreeze, brake fluids, transmission fluids, and cleaners, stains, varnishes, waterproofing liquids, sealing compounds, soaps, household cleaners and solvents, drain cleaners, poisons, pesticides, farm chemicals, old fuels (gas, diesel, kerosene),1-pound propane tanks, fluorescent light bulbs, household batteries, liquid batteries, and lead acid batteries (car and boat batteries), over-thecounter medications, other toxic, ignitable, corrosive or reactive hazardous materials found in your garage, basement, shed or home. Material we CANNOT accept includes biological wastes, sharps, ammunition, explosives, radioactive material, medical waste, smoke alarms and fire extinguishers. This event is not for business or industry. Enter on Berry Lane and exit on Lincoln Way. Call (574) 732-9253 for more information about items not listed above.

SCORE, from page 3 We hope to expand our coverage of local sports to the other area school as time goes on, so encourage your school to add us to their contact list. If you see me out on the field or court, whether you are a Berry, Comet, King or Panther, stop and say hello! I’ve really enjoyed the last few months of covering local sports. I’ve seen our Cross Country team set school records, the Volleyball team go on an impressive winning streak, and I’m finally beginning to understand the rules of soccer. Ok, maybe not.

those are OUR tax dollars, why shouldn’t we see some of them reinvested in our community? Another argument I’ve heard is that instead of looking for grants, we need to be doing all we can to help bring and keep business here. As someone who started a local business right here in Cass County, I agree wholeheartedly. Starting a business isn’t easy. But neither is fundraising, and that’s essentially what applying for grants is. Depending on grant money doesn’t really seem any easier to me than depending on customers to buy your product. And there are some great programs and opportunities for business owners here — like Logan’s Landing’s RECAP program and the SUCCEED program. (Full disclosure: Existential Media LLC was a winner of the

new business category in 2006). As a business owner, I can also say that quality of life IS something that matters when you start a business. So I’d like to thank everyone who spends their time looking for ways to make our community better. Thanks to them, we’ve got new sidewalks we can walk on downtown when we’re making ad calls. We’ve got trails where we can bike when we need a break. We’ve got parks and plazas where organizations can host the events we post on CassCountyCalendar. So instead of moaning and groaning about what we COULD have used the money for, let’s say thank you for what we have, and continue looking for ways that each of us can make our community a better place.
