01 CAPSTONE: CULTURAL CENTER 2019 - 2020
THE TAUNGYI CENTER FOR CULTURAL PRESERVATION ADDRESS: Corner of Zay Bine St. & Thit Sar Rd., Taunggyi, Shan State, Myanmar
APPLICATION: Revit, AutoCAD, Photoshop, Enscape BACKGROUND: This capstone focuses on a
cultural center designed to recognize different ethnic minorities of Shan State to bring back tradition lost from different issues. It will take advantage of Myanmar’s developing perspective towards modernization to conduct a unique space that sparks interest to explore older customs.
SITE LOCATION: TAUNGGYI, SHAN STATE, MYANMAR
VIEWING THE ISSUE: LOSING TRADITION 1 Armed groups and military conflicts Destruction of homes and ethnic displacement 2 Forced assimilation & forced relocation / stolen lands ‘Dilut[ed]’ culture through Burmanization 3 Corruption & complications within the government - too many linked internal problems (i.e. drug trade) 4 Moving - belief that larger cities bring opportunities Effects of globalization and modernization
FORMING THE ANSWER
The aim is to create a space that will reshape perspectives and revitalize memories for those who hope to redefine their views of ‘modernity’ and ‘culture’.

CONCEPT: REVERED MEMORY; A METAMORPHOSIS Inspired by a revolutionary poem “To Wilt Is To Bloom” and the beauty of the pathein parasol, “revered memories” demonstrates the importance of tradition and honor with the acceptance of modernity. By also looking into the role of psychology and the formation of identity, the design will ignite the positive memories of one’s culture that has been concealed due to the negative issues within the country as well as reinstill those who have lost it.

IMMERSIVE EXHIBITION ‘MODERN’ The immersive exhibition is a digital presentation that displays different photograpy or digital work that conveys the landscape or lifestyle in Shan State. Surrounding the user, the scenes aim to evoke nostalgic emotions or memories that may have been repressed by the constant issues many people have faced. For others, it is a unique method to experience Shan State.
THE FLOOR LOUNGE ‘MODERN’ - ‘TRADITIONAL’ Celebrating the typical Myanmar household, the floor lounge is a communal space where users can enjoy a soothing moment by utilizing the traditionally styled floor seating. The space showcases large prints based on art by Khin Zaw Latt, a revolutionary contemporary artist know for depicting scenes of lives of people from Myanmar as well as both their struggles and personal beauty.
OPEN THEATRE ‘TRADITIONAL’ The open theatre will be a place where different ethnic performances can be carried out, adding as both a family friendly educational feature as well as an inviting space for special occassions or celebrations that can involve demonstrations or theatric art. There is a beautiful view towards Taunggyi’s main market, forming a relationship between the interior and exterior’s cultural environment.

ST. FRANK HEADQUARTERS ADDRESS: 641 Indian St. Savannah, GA 31401
APPLICATION: Revit, AutoCAD, Photoshop, Enscape BACKGROUND: This is an adaptive reuse project focusing on workplace design for a St. Frank
headquarters in Savannah, while acting as the main showroom for St. Frank’s products. Here, open hoteling and large collaborative spaces are emphasized.
CONCEPT: RAW Defined as the early state of materiality; ‘raw’ also conveys not only the purity of the elements fused in St. Frank’s textiles and art, but also the company’s endeavor towards honesty and authenticity. With the incorporation of the building’s industrial pretense and the elegance of St. Frank, the office will demonstrate a scene where origination meets completion.

Overall, the design hopes to encourage collaboration with respect to the idea that St. Frank’s employees should gain excitement and develop a variety of relationships while also having moments for rest. Spacial categorization is inspired by textile patterns and weaving methods seen in St. Frank’s pieces.

Closest to the entryway, this space represents the Origination: Here the story of this site’s past is expressed as a industrial structure that is now brightened with the arrival of the empowering brand, and has now become a part of a ‘Saint’s Story’. This embodies St. Frank’s inviting nature and their desire to expand their perspective beyond “bohemian” .

Going deeper, one will reach the Completion: Here, users will feel the industrial atmosphere change into a true St. Frank space. This area is where artisans, the environment, and their handicrafts will come together for the finale; containing the most collaborative areas as well as the largest conference space. With the addition of green spaces, it transforms the factory-like setting into a more lively place.

POP - UP STORE ‘SUSTAINABLE RETAIL’ This thought of inviting only international ecofriendly brands: i.e. Simon Miller, recognizes the center’s encouragement of sustainability alongside its support for a healthy lifestyle and respect towards adaptive reuse design. Elements related to the environment are also reflected on the ground floor as it is with the mezzanine floor.
MIAM CAFE ‘HEALTHY FOODS’ A small cafe caters healthy food; demonstrating and showcasing sustainable foods for all ages through methods inspired by figures like Dan Barber. With this bright, energetic space, the aim is to teach people of the benefits of eating healthy; while also acting as a family friendly space with a blackboard feature.
