The Danger Tree ‘The Danger Tree’ exhibition is a commemoration of the Battle of the Somme, which took place between 1 July - 18 November 1916 on both sides of upper reaches ofthe River Somme in France. It was the largest battle of World War I on the Western Front; more than one million men were wounded or killed, making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history. On the first day of combat alone - 1st July 1916 - our forces suffered 19,240 lives lost and 57,470 casualties recorded. The collection takes its name from the only tree left standing on the battlefield during the fighting, one which lay in No Man’s Land roughly halfway between British and German front lines. It was used as a marker where men were directed to pass through a narrow cut in the wire to make an assault on the German line. The Germans, however, had already identified the location and had their machine guns trained on it and, when the men started to make their way through the opening, they were faced
with a withering onslaught of bullets. ‘The Danger Tree’ is a groundbreaking visual arts experience, and Scarlett’s most ambitious project to date. Working exclusively with Blippar, world leaders in the field of augmented art, the viewer can use their smartphone app to unlock Scarlett’s poignant work, stripping away the countless layers of paint to reveal the creative journey beneath each painting. In July 2016, award winning film set designer Kave Quinn transformed a 2,000ft space in Greenwich, London to create a blown out building from the French/Belgian borders. Parts of the exposed roof and walls echo to the sounds of war, as each of Scarlett’s paintings appear hanging from the walls still extant, each beautifully lit and positioned to take the viewer on an incredible journey. Following its success in London, the ground breaking exhibition opens at the Martin Luther King museum on the historic Liverpool docks this November to mark the end of the Battle of the Somme.
Biography Scarlett Raven is a 30 year old British artist living in England. With a degree in Art from Central Saint Martins, she is one of the youngest artists to have had a solo exhibition in London’s esteemed Cork Street Galleries. Since graduating in 2009, Scarlett has participated in a number of group shows across London, and enjoyed several successful solo shows. Landscapes and seascapes are prominent in Raven’s work, capturing the romance of nature and its ability to affect and reflect human emotion, and its relation to society and the world around us. Her fascination with perspective sees Raven enjoy the exploration of the endless effects it can have on a single scene, and movement is a central theme to her body of work. Here, the viewer’s participation is essential in making it come to life. Using abstract forms, patterns, and sculpture as devices to imply movement and draw the viewer in,
encouraging them to lend their imagination to, and establish a presence within, the painting. Her work embodies creation through movement and action. Scarlett has been involved in a number of public projects, including album art work design and charity commissions. She has enjoyed international critical acclaim including ES magazine, Creative Review, Modern Painters, Tate Magazine, Tatler, Time Out and Life Magazine. Popular acclaim is worldwide, with collectors in the UK, Dubai, Miami and Texas, and a number of high profile supporters such as Lord Jonathan Marland, Duffy, Take That, Roxy Music and Orlando Bloom.
