DESCRIPTION:

PROCEDURE FOR USE:

EnDOtec 390N is the newest development in cored wire technology. A new generation of wearfacing products based on the science and engineering of ultra-fine, submicron grain structures. Weld deposits have a high volume fraction of ultra-hard borocarbides distributed in a mesomorphous* iron-alloy matrix. A transformation phase relating to, or existing in, a state of matter typically intermediate between a liquid and a crystal phase i.e. not fully crystalline or fully amorphous. Designed to work with or without shielding gas protection.

Power-Source Type: EnDOtec DO*390N is compatible with most conventional constant voltage/constant potential (CC/CV) power sources, including programmable & pulsedarc units. Note: Integrated wire feeders should be set up with a 4-roll, knurled-drive wire system, and the gun cable liner, with either a Teflon® or polyamide liner to reduce wire drag.

Preheating Guide: The carbon & alloy content of the part to be welded normally dictates preheating levels. The ease at which a part air-hardens (air-hardenability) is also a critical point. Other considerations are workpiece size, thickness, and shape.

Buttering Layer Guide:To minimize any microfissuring tendencies, the use of an underlay is often a practical advantage. When welding manganese steel castings, or steels with a high hardenability, EnDOtec DO*68S or DO*29S offer an ideal cushion layer to further optimize the wear resistance of EnDOtec DO*390N.

TECHNICAL DATA: • Hardness 1-pass deposit: 66-68 HRC • Hardness 2-pass deposit: 67- 71 HRC • Temperature limit: ~1400°F (~750°C) • Carbide type: ~ Complex borocarbide • Relative wear resistance (ASTM G65 Tests): ~9.3 mm³ 1st pass, ~3.8mm³ 2nd pass • Complex carbide alloy: ~16mm³ 2nd pass • AISI Type D2 tool steel ~35mm³ Table I

Base Metal Preparation: Parts to be welded should be free of oil or grease. For optimum results a light grind to remove scale or other surface contamination, is advised.

Welding Technique: As indicated in Table 1 notes, there are certain advantages in using either a “push” or “pull” method during welding. For most downhand welding the pull method is suggested with the wire positioned at a 70º-80º angle. This will provide a clean, virtually spatter-free, high-crowned weld deposit. Note: If a second pass is required it should follow while the weld metal is still hot.

Note 1 - Welding Technique Influences: A "push technique" will tend to minimize dilution but will increase the amount of spatter. A "pull technique" will, on the other hand, minimize spatter and produce a more high-crowned weld deposit profile.

Note 2 - Shielding Gas Influences: It was observed that the 98% Ar + 2% O2 shielding gas influenced the as-deposited hardness by increasing it a marginal amount when compared to shielding gas Note 3 - Base Metal Influences: Although the molten weld metal pool is quite fluid, deposits on cast iron tend to be less wide with good height build-up…on cast iron expect typical transverse relief checking.

Note 4A - Amperage Influences: As would be expected, lower-end amperages will produce higher-crowned weld deposit with reduced dilution. Conversely, higher-end amperages will tend to flatten the weld deposit and increase penetration profiles and related dilution. Both deposit modes will exhibit stress-relieving microfissures.

Note 4B - Amperage Range Restrictions: Please note that we have refined the amperage & voltage ranges, as these are very critical in achieving the highest wear resistance in the weld deposit.
