Example of Castolin Eutectic Service How to Increase Hot Forging Die Performance Industry Metal working Equipment Drop forging hammers Part Single & multiple impression dies Die dimensions 620 x 520 x 300 mm Die material 56 NiCrMoV7 (W.-Nr 1.2714) Billet material 34 CrNiMo 6 steel Forging temperature1200°C Die Performance The number of quality accepted forgings manufactured or “die performance”, is closely related to the following variables : - Die design and material - Type of forging equipment - Mechanical alignment - Operating loading cycles - Die preheat prior to operations - Billet material and heat treating procedures - Lubrication and coolants used in service
When a cobalt type “21” alloy was substituted instead to solve the thermal fatigue cracking problems, die performance was increased to around 2500 quality forgings before creep deformation exceeded specified dimensional tolerances. The best solution for the above case proved to be the formulation of a new Castolin Eutectic alloy electrode XHD6865 specially developed to combat hot forging wear conditions. The dual die “blocking” and “finishing” impressions completely surface protected by the XHD-6865 alloy, produced over 4000 quality forgings.
A lack of control in one or more of the above variables will lead to premature die failures by surface cracking, wear or deformation producing forgings with poor surface cosmetics and unacceptable dimensional tolerances. Typical die performance in the above case was around 900 quality forgings.

Improving Die Performance The physical / mechanical wear factors which directly influence the average service life of hot forging dies are : - High impact forces - Medium pressures - Elevated surface temperature cycles - Thermal fatigue crack initiation and growth - Creep deformation - Metal / metal friction - Abrasive scale and oxide The use of selected, surface engineered alloys to weldprotect the critical working areas against the predominant wear factors can significantly increase die performance as seen on the graph. Hence the use of a work hardening nickel “C” type alloy in the above case increased die performance to around 1800 quality forgings before surface, thermal fatigue damage to the die became excessive.
XHD-6865 weld protected and EDM machined drop forging die still in perfect condition after 2500 quality forgings.
