MARCO SIMO Castrol Honda MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli has passed away from injuries sustained in a horror crash in the Malaysian Gran Prix. Simoncelli lost control of his bike and flew straight into the path of Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi who were unable to miss the fallen rider.

Simoncelli’s helmet was knocked from his head in the accident, which left race watchers stricken in the aftermath; he was rushed into emergency medical treatment but was unable to be revived.
Simoncelli’s death comes less than week after IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon was killed in a high speed 15-car crash in Las Vegas.

GOLD COAST 600 AN INTER The Armor All Gold Coast 600 wrapped up on Sunday with a positive weekend of competition in memory of IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon with wins for both Ford and Holden. The TeamVodafone pair of Jamie Whincup and Sebastien Bourdais took out Saturday’s racing while FPR Orrcon Steel driver Mark Winterbottom and last minute international replacement Richard Lyons won Sunday’s race. Castrol backed FPR had a stellar weekend – all on soft tyres, with Will Davison and Mika Salo finishing second in Saturday’s Race and Winterbottom and Lyons finishing in third. Sunday saw Winterbotom and Lyons push past championship front runner Whincup and international Bourdais to take the win, lending support to the conjecture that FPR has moved past its soft tyre poor form. Saturday’s race saw a mixed grid following the rain affected qualifying session. The next best of the Castrol runners behind the FPR pair was Greg Murphy and Oliver Gavin in sixth placing.
Not far behind in seventh were Rick Kelly and Jorg Bergmeister, brother Todd Kelly and Richard Westbrook crossed the line in 13th and Bottle-O drivers Paul Dumbrell and Christian Klien finished 15th. Steve Owen and Boris Said closed the race in 18th, with the Stratco racer driven by David Reynold and Alex Tagliani made it into 19th. Russell Ingall and Jan Magnussen was the last of the finishing group in 22nd while Tony D’Alberto and Tonio Liuzzi failed to complete the race. Sunday’s 300km race saw most of the Castrol EDGE drivers finish in the top of the field with Winterbottom and Lyons taking the popular win. Next best was again Greg Murphy and Oliver Gavin finishing in fourth and fellow Kelly Racing team members Rick Kelly and Jorg Bergmeister right behind in fifth. The Murphy/Gavin pair and the Kelly/ Bergmeister duo improved their performances to finish in fouth and fifth. Owen/Said, Ingall/Magussen and Kelly/
Westbrook grabbed seventh, eighth and ninth respectively to ensure top ten finishes. Reynolds and Tagliani finished just outside in 11th, while Alberto and Luizzi took home 19th place. Paul Dumbrell and Christian Klien were early casualties - being pitched into the back chicane fence by fellow Castrol runner, Jan Magnussen - who was partnered with Russell Ingall. Sebastien Bourdais - as the best international driver across the two races - was awarded the Dan Wheldon Memorial Trophy. The Armor All Gold Coast 600 internationals concept has continued to receive the highest praise with the concept already in place for next year. The V8 Supercars Championship now moves on to Tasmania, November 11-13 for the third last event of the year.

“It took me a long time to realise what I needed to do, but I finished with a good feeling and thanks to Jari-Matti’s great support, it means the championship is still wide open going to the final round.”
Hirvonen has lost his lead of the championship but is only eight points behind reigning champion Sebastien Loeb.
The pair now move on to the final round of the championship – Wales Rally Great Britain, November 10 – 13.

he WRC MINI Team has once again shaken up the World Rally Championship, taking fourth and fifth as well as a one-two Power Stage win. Dani Sordo took the fourth place finish however teammate Kris Meeke who finished in fifth wowed the crowd by beating the top running WRC leaders by winning the Power Stage. Meeke beat out Championship leaders Sebastien Loeb and Mikko Hirvonen to bag the extra points, Sordo was close behind in second, also securing extra points. The one-two finish is a massive boost for the team who have only competed in a handful of events and a warning to other WRC competitors for the 2012 season.

WRAPS UP FORMULA FORD CHAMPIONSHIP Cameron Waters has wrapped up the Formula Ford Championship at the Gold Coast 600 with one round still to go in the championship. Waters put his car into pole position for the first race but was pipped at the post finishing in second behind Liam Sager with Jack Le Brocq in third. Waters had a terrible run in race two, crashing out and jeopardizing his chances of wrapping up the series. “I’m really disappointed, I have great speed this weekend and I obviously
wanted to wrap up the title today, but I made a small mistake and that’s all it takes around here,” said Waters. In his absence, Jack Le Brocq, Liam Sager and Tom Williamson took the top three positions for the race. Race three saw Waters finish outside of the top five with Jack LeBrocq winning his second race of the round and Tom Williamson and Nick Foster closing out the top three. Despite struggling in race three on Sunday, Waters managed to clinch enough points to secure the

RICHO TAKES THIRD Steve Richards had an impressive Gold Coast round, landing third place for the weekend in the Porsche Carrera Cup. Saturday’s race saw him heading for a top three finish after a sixth place start before a mistake pushed him back to seventh. Sunday he improved his performance, grabbing a fourth in the first race and second in the final race of the weekend.

KAWASAKI TEAM KICKS OFF SUPER X CHAMPIONSHIP Monster Energy Kawasaki Rider Billy Mackenzie has started his Super X Championship campaign with a second place finish. Taking on the wet and muddy Melbourne track he managed to keep himself in first place until slipping and dismounting his bike, leading to second place in the end.
“It was definitely a better start to Super X this year for me than last year. I stuck to my lines, kept it straight, concentrated and tried not to make too many mistakes in the terrible conditions out there and it paid off,” he said. Other Monster Energy Kawasaki riders Dean Ferris and Meghan Rutledge also raced over the weekend in the Super X Championship opener.
Ferris dominated the Lites category before a crash on the final jump relegated him to fifth place. Rutledge qualified for the under 19’s category but was unable to secure an elusive top ten placing, however the Australian Women’s MX champion was happy with qualifying for the category.
