CASTROL-BACKED FPR’S WINTERBOTTOM TAKES POINTS LEAD Castrol-oiled Ford Pepsi Max Crew’s Mark Winterbottom has extended his championship lead to more than 100 points after winning two races on his way to the perpetual Jason Richards Trophy at the ITM500 Auckland. The fourth round of the 2014 V8 Supercars Championship also saw Frosty pick up a record 52nd win for the FG Falcon.

“Sunday was an amazing day and to win the Jason Richards trophy is very special,” said Winterbottom. “He was an amazing guy and we all take great pride in winning this. We currently hold Jason’s trophy, the Mark Porter Trophy and the Peter Brock Trophy so we are very honoured to have won such special races in our championship.

“It was incredible to race on ANZAC Day, to see the massive crowd supporting us

all weekend and to claim two wins and the points lead is all we could’ve asked for. We are all very proud of what we’ve achieved and will use this momentum to drive us all to perform at the highest level.”

Winterbotom’s teammate Chaz Mostert picked up two podium finishes from the four races contested over the weekend to bring back confidence after a sluggish start to the year for the youngster.

Castrol-oiled Nissan Motorsport enjoyed their strongest results in the final race of the ITM 500 Auckland at Pukekohe Park on Sunday. Caruso qualified the #36 Norton Nissan Altima strongly in seventh and used excellent race pace to pick up two places, crossing the line in fifth place. The result has moved him up to 13th in the V8 Supercars Championship – the best of the Nissan Motorsport quartet.

Jack Daniel’s Nissan driver Rick Kelly saved his best result until the last race of the weekend with a strong eighth place effort. After a solid 11th place result on ANZAC day, Castrol-backed Supercheap Auto Racing driver Tim Slade salvaged 42 points and 21st place from Sunday’s 200km race after a clutch issue on the grid saw a dream front row

slot become a pit-lane start. Despite the mechanical issues, the South Australian was happy with the speed of his Supercheap Auto Commodore.

“Qualifying was obviously good, with the front row slot,” Slade said. “However, at the start, the clutch went to the floor – so I made sure the starters were aware I wasn’t going to get going. They aborted the start, and had to begin my race from the pit-lane. I also had to left-foot brake the whole race, which wasn’t ideal. Regardless, the car had good speed, which is encouraging for future rounds. I just feel sorry for all the boys. It would have been nice to get a top result today after yesterday’s results and after qualifying being so good. We’ll put it behind us and look forward to the next one.”

The next round of the V8 Supercars Championship is the Perth 400, held in three weeks’ time at Barbagallo Raceway on May 16-18.

CASTROL SIGNS UP AS MAJOR BACKER FOR TOWNSVILLE Long-time Australian motorsport supporter, Castrol, has sealed a deal to become the platform naming rights sponsor for the Townsville street race from July 4-6. The oil giant replaces Sucrogen with the event run at the Reid Park street circuit to be known as the Castrol Townsville 500. In breaking the Townsville news it has also become known that Castrol EDGE is also the official oil partner of the V8 Supercars Championship.

CASTROL-BACKED MURPHY SECURES V8 SUPERTOURER CHAMPIONSHIP Castrol EDGE-backed Greg Murphy has secured the 2014 BNT V8 SuperTourer Championship after scoring victory in three races at Pukekohe. The Castrol EDGEoiled Mike Pero Holden pilot is now a twotime champion of the series after winning his first title in the category last year.

Murphy shared the podium twice on Saturday with young guns Richard Moore and Andre Heimgartner. Moore beat Heimgartner to second in Race 1 before the positions were reversed in the second encounter. In Race 3 it was Murphy again who took the spoils behind the wheel of his Castrol-oiled Commodore.

CASTROL-BACKED HONDA RIDER REA WINS IN ASSEN Jonathan Rea took a commanding win on his Castrol-oiled Pata Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade SP in the second of Sunday’s two third-round World Superbike races at Assen in the Netherlands. It was his fifth win at the 4.542km circuit, his 12th career SBK victory, and a superb follow-up to his third place finish in race one this morning. Rea’s podium finishes in Sunday’s races extend his record of scoring at least one rostrum finish each season at Assen since 2010, giving him a total of eight in ten races over five years.

“It’s been a really good weekend because we’ve been on the podium twice,” said Rea. “I just want to thank all the team. This win’s for all those guys who have worked tirelessly throughout

the winter and since the start of the season to make the CBR as strong as possible. It’s great to be able to give them back some good vibes to roll with into the next part of the season.”

Sunday’s first outing was dry, despite forecast rain, and British rider Rea, 27, settled into a rhythm, but did not have quite enough pace to match eventual winner, Sylvain Guintoli, with Tom Sykes finishing second. The race ended five laps early when oil was dropped on the circuit, Rea’s Pata Honda team-mate Leon Haslam, 30, taking eighth place at the flag.

The rain eventually arrived for race two but not before the race was declared ‘dry’ and started under threatening skies.

The first attempt was delayed after the end of the warm-up lap when the rain finally fell in earnest. While some riders lined up on the grid, others, including Haslam, entered the pits to switch from slick tyres to full wets.

The second attempt to start the race was stopped after just three laps when the rain became torrential and red flags were waved. A long wait followed for track conditions to improve, with a shortened 10-lap race finally starting two hours behind schedule.

Rea took the lead on the opening lap and kept his rivals at arms length, eventually crossing the line two seconds ahead of fellow British rider Alex Lowes, with Davide Guigliano finishing third.

Castrol-backed Pata Honda’s Michael van der Mark won the third round World Supersport race at Assen in the Netherlands, dominating the 18-lap race to the delight of an ecstatic home crowd.

It was the first World Supersport race win for the 21-year-old Dutch rider and particularly poignant for his team which is based just 70km south of the 4.542km circuit. Following his second place at Aragon last week, van der Mark now moves to second place in the series, just four points off the lead.

CASTROL-BACKED JFR RACER HIGHT WINS AGAIN Castrol-backed John Force Racing driver Robert Hight has won again this weekend at the NHRA’s 27th annual O’Reilly Auto Parts Spring Nationals at Royal Purple Raceway. Hight has now won for the third time this year and extends his streak of consecutive final round appearances to five. In Sunday’s eliminations, he dismissed Bob Tasca III, Alexis DeJoria, Del Worsham and Jack Beckman to score his 32nd professional career event win, No. 229 for John Force Racing as a whole.

“I had high expectations coming into this weekend because I got my first win here. Mike Neff- he has owned this place,” said Hight. “When he drove and tuned his own car he was, well, just like he was today. You have high

expectations, especially since we’ve been in four straight final rounds. We’ve been kind of on a roll here. It dates back to Indy,” said Hight.

In the Experts’ league Greg Rust topped the trio for the Pukekohe round with a healthy 37 points haul. Speedcafe.com maintains the lead in the Expert league standings with Rust moving ahead of WTCC Champion Andy Priaulx after his

strong performance, albeit by just once point heading into the next event.

CASTROL-BACKED HONDA CREATE BTCC HISTORY The Castrol-backed Honda Yuasa Racing team has created British Touring Car Championship history as the first Estate/Tourer ever to win a BTCC race.

Gordon Shedden gave the Castrol-oiled Honda Civic Tourer its first win in the BTCC after last gasp final lap move at Donington Park.

The 2012 BTCC champion was sixth during the early stages of the race while

West Surrey Racing’s Colin Turkington led from pole. However, the Honda man scythed his way through the field after winning a titanic scrap with Castrolbacked team-mate Matt Neal and Motorbase’s Mat Jackson.

Shedden then picked off Jason Plato for second before reeling in Turkington.

A final corner lunge saw Shedden slip

past Turkington to take the chequered flag. Team-mate Neal was third while reining champion Andrew Jordan was fifth. Triple Eight Engineering dominated a wet race one with Plato leading teammate Sam Tordoff to a 1-2 finish, with Jordan third. The result was reversed in race two with Tordoff leading Plato home with Shedden in third for Castrol-backed Honda.

DOUBLE PODIUM FOR CASTROL HONDA IN FRANCE Castrol Honda World Touring Car Championship drivers Tiago Monteiro and Gabrielle Tarquini both scored podium results during Round 2 of the WTCC at the Circuit Paul Ricard in France.

Race 1 Gabriele Tarquini stood proudly on the podium after bringing his Castrol Honda Civic home a fighting third overall in the first race of the FIA WTCC event at the Circuit Paul Ricard.

“I was very happy with the start of course but the setup was not so comfortable in these condition,” said Tarquini. “It was quite a handful and I had to be very gentle with the car for all the race. “To be on the podium is such a great difference to the feeling last weekend in Marrakesh and this result is a tribute to the team for all the work to repair my car in time for this event.”

Michelisz into the first corner and continued to lead the race for the first two laps before being passed by Yvan Muller. Michelisz hung onto the leading pair until lap 5 when he was passed by Sebastien Loeb with Loeb also passing Tarquini in the latter stages of the race.

Castrol Honda teammate Tiago Monteiro made a poor start to Race 1 and found his car lacking grip but improving as the race went on. He moved up to 8th position two laps from the end.

Race 2 Tiago Monteiro made a lightning start from the second row of the grid to lead the field into the first corner, closely followed by Mehdi Bennani in the Proteam Racing Honda Civic WTCC. Equally quick off the line was Tarquini who cut through the pack to hold 4th place at the end of lap 1.

On-track incidents required several safety cars and once racing resumed from the final SC Monteiro was passed

by Lopez and Muller. He did however manage to hold onto third position and earn another podium appearance for Castrol Honda with teammate Tarquini shadowing him home in fourth.

“I had a very good car for this race,” said Montiero. “I had a great start especially as it didn’t work so well for me in Race 1. I had built a decent 3 second lead and felt pretty comfortable but then the safety car came out. It was really bad timing for me those two safety car periods. We are certainly improving all the time and I would like to congratulate the whole team for a superb job well done.”

Fellow Honda driver Mehdi Bennani showed increasing confidence in a three car battle where he held off Sebastian Loeb and Dusan Borkovic for a welldeserved 5th place.

CASTROL-BACKED ŠKODA CELEBRATES ONE-TWO VICTORY IN IRELAND Castrol EDGE-oiled ŠKODA Motorsport pulled off the Easter surprise they were hoping for with a resounding one-two victory at the Circuit of Ireland Rally Round 4 of the FIA European Rally Championship (ERC).

The “Flying Finns” Esapekka Lappi/ Janne Ferm won ten of the 18 special stages that took place on fast and extremely narrow asphalt streets around Belfast, Northern Ireland’s capital city.

Sepp Wiegand/Frank Christian (D/D) of Team ŠKODA AUTO Deutschland rounded off an excellent chase on Easter Saturday with second place.

With their second victory of the season following triumph in Latvia, Lappi and Ferm have taken the lead in the drivers’ standings and the co-drivers’ standings of the ERC. Wiegand won four special stages on day two of the rally to move up from fourth to second in the overall standings.

“We are delighted that we won in Northern Ireland,” said Lappi. “The whole team worked hard for this success.
