Starting at 10:00 A.M. and lasting until 6:00 P.M. on Saturday and ending at 5:00 P.M. on Sunday, downtown Castro Valley will be hosting the “Don’t Miss” event of the Fall Valley Eden Area Chamber of Commerce hosts this event for many purposes, but especially for bringing our entire community together for a celebration of Castro Valley and a reminder for all to shop locally as we have some amaz ing owners and businesses in ourEventcommunity.Co-Chairs Janella Anguiano and Todd Anglin are heading up this year’s event, which was started in 1972, ffty years ago! Many of the same traditions through the years will be continued including featuring local talent on two stages, businesses, arts/crafts, food/beverages (including local Twining Vine Wines), and the ever-popular KidsCo-ChairZone! Anguiano’s excitement is evident as she stated “We are so excited to bring back the long-standing tradition of the Castro Valley Fall Festival. The tradition began in 1972 and being that we lost two years to the pandemic, we are thrilled to bring in back on its 50th year! Being local business owners, Todd Anglin and I have had a blast co-chairing this event and are looking forward to seeing the local vendors, hearing the amazing bands, and seeing the community out and about and supporting our local business es.” The 2022 Fall Festival will be kicked off by our very own Castro Valley High School Madrigals, the premier audi tioned ensemble at the CVHS, selected from juniors, seniors, and a very few select sopho mores through a rigorous au dition process. The Madrigals is just one of the many musical groups, soloists, bands and talents that will be featured. Local businesses, schools, service organizations and so many other groups and individuals will be sharing their gifts and talents with our community. We also have the California State Assembly District 20 fnalists, Liz Ortega and Shawn Kumagai, doing an Open Forum at 6:00 P.M. on Saturday at the Main Stage Canopy at Redwood Road and Castro Valley Boulevard. In the true Castro Valley spirit of keeping everyone as safe as possible and allowing as much freedom as possible, the Boulevard entrances will be blocked to all vehicles by Castro Valley Sanitary trucks turning the entire Boulevard into one large open space. We are confdent that everyone participating will follow all County and State Health di rectives and all do our part for sanitation and safety through out the event. We are fortunate to have both the Castro Valley Sanitary District and Alameda County Industries (ACI) abating and handling 100% of the refuse during and after the event, just another great example of how Alameda County and other local agencies are all working together, including students from Redwood Christian Schools helping with set-up and take-down and throughout the Festival, to ensure a memo rable time for everyone! Please note that Castro Valley Boulevard will be closed between Redwood Road and Santa Maria between 9:00 P.M. on Friday night, September 9 to midnight on September 11, with Jamison as the detour route. The 2022 Fall Festival will also give everyone present a chance to meet our new Executive Director, Gary Slate. A local businessman for years, who has hit the ground running, stating “I am thrilled in this new role where we can quickly help grow training, resources, and new ideas for our business community. I look forward to imple menting many new ideas and support which will strengthen our Chamber of Commerce partnerships and development for all our local businesses throughout the entire Eden Area. This fantastic communi ty event will be one of several we host including the Castro Valley Light Parade, Famfest in Cherryland, and Showtime San Lorenzo, which bring our businesses and community together.”TheCastro Valley Eden Area Chamber of Commerce is proud and excited to host an event for everyone to enjoy! This event could not happen without the support of our Sponsors (see Sponsor pages - please stop by their booths to say “thank you”). 2020’s “The Reverbivores Watch TV” was recorded weeks before the pandemic shut down the band (along with the rest of the planet.) Instead of practicing, touring, playing shows and writing music together, from summer 2020 through spring 2021, Tim Callendar (guitar), Tom Janci (bass), Adam Detrick (drums) and Jonathan Korn (guitar) and their signifcant others found themselves on biweekly Zoom sessions playing Dungeons & Dragons. By May 2021, the last goblin had been slain and the band reconvened at Jona than’s house in Castro Valley to brush the dust off their songs. It took until spring of 2022 for live music to begin coming back around the Bay Area. The Reverbivores have been repeat guests at the Cas tro Valley Fall Festival and always look forward to per forming for the home crowd. “We were pretty bummed that the 2021 festival didn’t happen,” said Jonathan, “But we’re super excited to have been invited to play the 50th anniversary festival in 2022. We love playing this venue and this year will be really special.”

The Fall Festival got its start at the Castro Village Shopping Center in 1973. This brochure can be seen at the Chamber’s kiosk now on display at the Castro Val ley Marketplace. This year’s Fall Festival is this Saturday & Sunday Sept. 10-11. The year was 1972. Nixon visited China, “The Godfa ther” debuted, and we were all dancing to the “Crocodile Rock.” It was also the frst year a band of dedicated Castro Valley business owners joined together as the Chamber of Commerce to host their frst ever Fall Festival. First held in the Castro Village Shopping Center, the Chamber voted to provide a showcase for Castro Valley businesses and artisans while showing off Castro Valley as the “Heart of Good Living.” The event offered attendees a wine-tasting, fashion show, and art exhibit. The success of that frst year prompted a second event in 1973, which the Chamber offcially named the Fall Festival.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Offce in partnership with the Castro Valley Eden Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Crime Prevention Meeting for businesses located in Castro Valley and unincorporated Alameda County. The purpose of the meeting will be to provide de-escalation training and general crime prevention techniques. Attendees will be able to ask questions in an interactive environment. We look forward to seeing you!

“A community and cultural event in Castro Valley has long seemed an impossible dream, but this year of 1973 presented the magic momentum where a few inspired people saw a like ly possibility in a small largely unheralded event sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce,” wrote Wayne Starkweather president of the Fall Festival who managed the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant when it was located on Redwood Road. We know more about the 1973 event because it was the frst to include a special hand out with all the names of the participants, coordinators, and sponsors. The mustard-yellow brochure can be seen at the Chamber of Commerce kiosk in a renovated telephone booth located at Lab 200 upstairs at the Castro Valley Marketplace. Dwight Perry of Perry’s Creative Promotions (previ ously Creative Printing) paid for an advertisement in that 1973 brochure. The Castro Valley Rotary past president and Chamber member said the Fall Festival was the event you wanted to participate in. “It was a fun, fun project to work on,” Perry told the Fo rum. “I remember Rotary had a beer booth and we did really well with it. It was a party at mosphere. We had no problem getting volunteers to help out with the beer booth.” The Fall Festival 1973 event included a raffe for a 25-inch Magnavox color television set courtesy of Castro Valley Radio, TV, and Stereo. The Chamber created a Treasure Map within the brochure where visitors could “Discover the hidden treasures in Castro Valley” and the “Little shops flled with golden values.” Treasure spots includ ed In Grandma’s Day, which sold art needlework quilting, Wedding & Custom Cakes by Muriel, and Decor Factors, which were located on Castro Valley Boulevard near Anita Avenue, and the Slim Cheese House, which sold imported and domestic cheese on Center Street, the current site of a pet grooming shop. The Fall Festival’s wine tasting included an array of varietals including champagne supplied by Paul Eaton’s Li quor Center on Center Street. Those partaking in the tasting received commemorative 8 1/2-inch wine goblets em bossed with the year. A scant 1,250 frst edition glasses were handed out in 1973. The art exhibit in 1973 was sponsored by the AAUW (American Association of University Women) with art works such as pottery, stained glass, and paintings ready for purchase. Their special guest that year was O. Lawrence Hansen who was known for his landscapes, portraits, and forals. The Minnesota native also owned the Gallery de Oro on Redwood Road. The Fall Festival fashion show included women’s and men’s fashions. The event was hosted by master of ceremo nies, Ed Hennessy who was advertised as a man, “with a fair for pleasing people, calm ing nerves and chasing away the blues.” Models paraded down the runway with frocks from Allu’s, Cahn’s, Daughtrey’s, House of Mumus, The Frances Shop, Kay’s Bridal Shop, and Grutman’s.FallFestival president Stark weather was joined in leader ship by frst vice president Jack Harrison, second vice president Betty Annable, treasurer Rich ard Kraft, past president Paul Eaton, and Board reps Ben Gurule and George Hartmann. In his note to attendees and the Chamber, Starkweather expressed his gratitude to the community and predicted good things for the future of the event.“With resounding pub lic and civic approval and cooperation, it is the founders’ deepest design to make it a total community involvement and that the Fall Festival becomes an annual Castro Valley cultural experience,” Starkweather wrote. Fifty years later, the com munity is again gathering this September to celebrate good food, artwork, music, and even a littleThisfashion.year’sFall Festival will take place on Saturday and Sunday, September 10-11 on Castro Valley Boulevard between Redwood Rd & Santa Maria Ave. Visit the Chamber website for more details at Edenareachamber.com.
