Da un lato Paesi da sempre tecnologicamente ai primi posti, come gli Stati Uniti o il Canada: il primo con un mercato che conta su numeri enormi, il secondo su tirature più limitate e flessibili. Dall’altro le nuove tigri dell’Estremo Oriente, come la Cina, protagonista di uno sviluppo in costante accelerazione, che fa della massima qualità il suo obiettivo ma che è costretta a misurarsi anche con problematiche di frontiera, come il pericolo della contraffazione nell’industria dei tabacchi. Ancora, da un lato giovani realtà emergenti nel bacino del Mediterraneo, come l’Algeria; dall’altro gruppi multinazionali fortemente radicati nel Vecchio Continente. In Italia, poi, al Nord come al Sud, aziende dinamiche inserite con autorevolezza nei propri mercati o che si affacciano a nuove opportunità di business. In questo numero di Archipelago, il quadro di case histories che presentiamo è davvero estremamente differenziato ed articolato. In tutti i casi, la costante è rappresentata dalla scelta fatta, ad ogni latitudine del globo, nel farsi supportare per la propria attività dalla tecnologia OMET e dal suo servizio. Si tratta di un risultato importante, che ci rende orgogliosi perché testimonia l’apprezzamento da parte del mercato della strada sin qui seguita. On the one hand there are countries that have traditionally been technological leaders, like the United States or Canada: the first enjoying a volume market, the second a more limited one with shorter runs. Then, on the other hand, there are the new tiger economies in the Far East, like China, which, while it is enjoying steady growth and has made top quality its target, is nevertheless forced to confront issues such as counterfeiting in the tobacco industry. Closer to home, there are, on the one hand, young emerging markets in the Mediterranean area, like Algeria; while, on the other hand, there are the multinational groups that are strongly rooted in the Old Continent. In Italy too, both North and South, companies that are actively involved in their own markets are also looking for new business opportunities. This edition of Archipelago carries an extremely varied and detailed picture of the companies we deal with. The constant theme that runs through the magazine is ‘choice’. And, the choice that is made everywhere around the world is to be supported by Omet’s technology and service. This is important, and makes us feel really proud, because it is proof of how the market appreciates what we have achieved so far. Our path is one of constant product evolution, aimed at improving performance, increasing production flexibility, encouraging a rapid payback on investment, reducing waste, and automating and managing processes to secure the highest quality. “The market today is really pushing us to become a low cost producer,” affirmed William Weernink, Vice President of operations for Smyth Companies, Inc, recounting the history of the converting company, from gaining ISO certification and a Six Sigma program, to making great efforts to reduce waste. “We really focused on the machine, and to reach the next level, we needed a system that was servo driven”. Then, last Autumn, the label manufacturer did just that with the first US installation of an Omet Varyflex UV-flexo rotary screen press at its Minneapolis headquarters. The 10-colour, 20.5 inch system, “is the next step up in terms of technology for narrow and mid web machines”, added Weernink. “Its servo driven operation means we can print high quality graphics quickly and efficiently”. In 2007, Smyth Co celebrated 130 years in business, and today has fully operational plants in Minnesota, Virginia and Colorado. With primary, glue applied and pressure sensitive labels, it prints and converts in-pack and onpack promotional coupons and labels for booklets and point-of-purchase displays. Its end markets include food and beverages, personal hygiene, household products, and beer, wines and spirits. Inoltre, la più lunga esperienza dei costruttori di macchine europei con i gruppi servo ha spinto Smyth a prendere in considerazione un produttore straniero come OMET, rappresentato negli USA da Matik North America. “Nel caso di OMET, esisteva un forte background nel settore dei macchinari per tissue e tovaglioli” afferma. “Non erano necessariamente gli esperti nel nastro stretto, ma nel servocontrollo della tensione. Abbiamo avuto la sensazione che avrebbero continuato nell’innovazione”. “Sono in grado di trattare il nonwoven ad alte velocità” aggiunge Scott Farkas, direttore dello sviluppo dei nuovi prodotti per la Smyth. “Dicono di capire estremamente bene il controllo della tensione perché stampano anche su quei supporti”. Dal controllo di tensione infinitamente preciso che assicura la OMET Varyflex tramite i gruppi servo sulla macchina, traggono beneficio il tipo di etichette per opuscoli multistrato complesse che costituiscono l’elemento essenziale del business della Smyth. Nei sistemi più vecchi con alberi in linea, il controllo della tensione era limitato allo svolgimento e al riavvolgimento. “Ora con la macchina servo, non appena partiamo con nastri multipli e cambiamo lo spessore del materiale strada facendo, tutte quelle regolazioni fanno la differenza” spiega Farkas. I direttori della Smyth hanno dapprima ispezionato da vicino le macchine OMET al Labelexpo di Bruxelles del 2005. Le prove sono state eseguite presso il demo center del fornitore nella sede di Lecco, la scorsa primavera,. E, dopo la consegna, la prima produzione commerciale Smyth eseguita sulla macchina è stata eseguita nel novembre scorso. Oltre ai gruppi di asciugatura GEW UV presenti su ogni unità di stampa, si possono posizionare in qualsiasi ponte di stampa due gruppi portatili di asciugatura ad aria a raggi infrarossi. extensive experience of European machine builders with servo units that urged Smyth to consider a foreign manufacturer such as Omet, represented in the USA by Matik North America. “We saw that Omet had a strong background in the tissue and napkin machine industry,” he said. “They weren’t necessarily experts in narrow web machines, but they were well adept in tension control via servos. We got the feeling they would continue to innovate,” he added. “They can process non wovens at high speeds,” added Scott Farkas, Director of New Product Development for Smyth. “They seem to have good tension control, as they also print on those substrates.” With its very precise tension control, ensured by the machine mounted servo units, the Omet Varyflex is able to print complex, multi layered booklet labels, which make up the principle business of Smyth. In older line shaft machines, tension control was limited to unwinding and rewinding. “Now, with the servo driven system, we can work with multiple webs and change the thickness of the material along the way, all of which are settings that really make a difference,” explained Farkas. Smyth’s Directors had an initial close up preview of the Omet machines at the 2005 Labelexpo in Brussels. Tests were then carried out in the Spring at the supplier’s demo centre at its facility in Lecco, Italy. The Varyflex was delivered last November and went straight into production at Smyth. In addition to the GEW UV curing units at each print station, there are two portable infrared air drying units that can be mounted on any of the print decks. Among its other main components, the Omet Varyflex features a Vetaphone Corona Plus surface treater, a BST Pro Mark ekr 1000 unwind web guide and an Erhardt+Leimer Elscan web video control system. Smyth also planned to add a Martin Automatic butt splicer and turret rewinder. “This again fits in with our aim of becoming a low cost, low waste producer,” said Weernink.

Maintaining registration on extensible substrates is greatly assisted by the servo motors on the plate and impression cylinders, which allow fine control of the web between print units. A registration mark is printed on the first print station, which is read by sensors at the subsequent print stations. This information is used to adjust servo rotation speed to compensate for changes in web length. Infeed and outfeed tension is also servo controlled. The flexo line is completed by a Prati rewinder. Commenting on the Omet press Mr Cyr said: “One of the techniques of envelope manufacturing is in the cutting and gluing of products.” That lends itself to folding carton production. “Our intent was to bring our knowledge of manufacturing and apply it to boxes in one or two operations max,” he said. Cyr pointed to the growth of the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries in Canada, especially in Montréal. And with the new Omet, he can produce quality cartons in half the time. “The Omet machine can go from the roll to the die cut blank in one operation, and then we can send it to a folder,” he concluded.

Our aim is the timely solving of technical problems experienced by Omet customers anywhere in the world, and taking the appropriate steps for immediate action directly on site or by quickly despatching spare parts and upgrade units. Omet’s Technical Customer Service Team is effectively a ‘first-aid’ device that is at the disposal of customers every day (including Saturday). Particularly tricky but important is the job that the staff of this Office, coordinated by Ing. Francesco Moro, Alessandro Nava, Massimo Fantato and Sabrina Medolago, has to carry out. In the markets where Omet operates, the watchword is ‘just in time’. Being able to give rapid, precise and timely answers very often means less machine downtime for a customer and the opportunity to win or see through a precious job order. Even for Omet, which has invested in people and technology, it is obvious that this office has a strategic function. Omet’s Technical Customer Service Team avails itself of the most modern remote diagnosis and intervention technologies. In addition, Omet’s team of 25 technicians, specialising in mechanics and electronics, relies on the office to deploy them to a customer’s site in any of the 50 countries worldwide where Omet machines are installed. Fundamental to the smooth working of such a service is a blend of people and technology. Omet’s Technical Customer Service Team is made up of expert engineers who know the detailed specification of all manufactured and installed machines, and consequently can resolve any query or technical problem that the customer may encounter. “The main function of our Technical Customer Service Team,” explained Omet’s Sales Manager, Marco Calcagni, “is acting as an everyday interface between Omet and the customer, and being a precise and ready reference to solve his problems. The rapport that is frequently established between our technicians and the customer’s production staff is very practical, based on mutual confidence and professional regard. Omet’s Technical Customer Service Team is often the first contact that the customer has with our Company after buying a machine. And the customer knows he can count on valuable support, specially tailored to him.” The technology employed for remote intervention is particularly sophisticated: “Through special information technology interfaces,” explained Ing Francesco Moro, “we are able to intervene ‘online’ directly into the machine’s programme, wherever it is, and carry out an exhaustive inquiry, isolating the problem and solving it. When it’s needed, we are also able to deal with the request to despatch a particular spare part ‘same day’, for example as a replacement for a worn out part, or to plan a technician’s travel.” But, the planning of new installations and the negotiation with the customer of supplementary equipment – if any – to be provided for existing machinery is also the responsibility of Omet’s Technical Customer Service Team. Lo staff dell’Ufficio di assistenza tecnica OMET è infatti composto da tecnici esperti, che conoscono in ogni dettaglio le macchine prodotte ed installate e sono quindi in grado di risolvere ogni dubbio o problema tecnico che il cliente possa riscontrare. “La funzione principale del personale del nostro Ufficio di assistenza tecnica - spiega Marco Calcagni, direttore commerciale OMET - è quella di essere un vero e proprio trait-d’union tra OMET e cliente, un riferimento preciso e sempre disponibile per risolvere i suoi problemi. Il dialogo che spesso si instaura tra i nostri tecnici e i tecnici del cliente è così estremamente operativo, all’insegna della fiducia e della stima professionale reciproca. L’Ufficio di assistenza tecnica OMET, infatti, è spesso la prima interfaccia che il cliente ha con la nostra Azienda dopo aver acquistato l’impianto. E il cliente sa di poter contare su un supporto prezioso, pensato apposta per lui”. Le tecnologie impiegate per l’intervento a distanza sono particolarmente sofisticate: “Attraverso particolari interfacce informatiche - spiega l’ing. Francesco Moro - siamo in grado di intervenire ‘on line’ direttamente sul programma dell’impianto, ovunque si trovi, e compiere una approfondita diagnostica, individuando il problema e risolvendolo. Quando serve, poi, siamo in grado di evadere anche nella stessa giornata la richiesta di invio di un particolare pezzo di ricambio, in sostituzione di parti che nel tempo si sono usurate, o di programmare l’invio di un tecnico trasfertista”. Ma dall’Ufficio di assistenza tecnica OMET dipende anche la programmazione delle nuove installazioni e la individuazione, con il cliente, delle eventuali attrezzature supplementari di cui dotare l’impianto già allestito. Inoltre l’Ufficio affianca ed offre un supporto tecnico alla struttura commerciale OMET nel momento della vendita, proponendo la lista ricambi da offrire al cliente in dotazione perché la conservi presso la propria sede a magazzino. Diverse sono le richieste di intervento che giungono all’Ufficio di assistenza tecnica OMET. Dipendono, in genere, dalla tipologia dell’impianto oltre che dalla dimensione dell’azienda: “Nel caso delle macchine per etichette, film e cartoncino - spiega Alessandro Nava - le richieste sono spesso particolarmente complesse e sono volte ad ottenere dall’impianto la miglior qualità di stampa. Per questo occorre avere anche competenza in ordine agli inchiostri, ai supporti, alle colle e agli adesivi. Nel caso delle macchine per tovaglioli, invece, la maggior parte dei clienti è rappresentato da grossi gruppi o realtà multinazionali. In questo caso il dialogo è con i tecnici dell’azienda e riguardano problematiche attinenti la goffratura, la piega, la diversa tipologia del tovagliolo. Oppure problematiche relative alla produttività: ogni fermo macchina va ridotto al minimo”. In questo dialogo tecnico con la clientela, l’Ufficio di assistenza tecnica OMET ha in questi anni anche svolto una funzione propositiva nell’individuazione e nello sviluppo di specifiche macchine, gruppi o accessori: “Ascoltare il cliente è il metodo che il nostro Ufficio di assistenza tecnica utilizza nel proprio lavoro quotidiano. - afferma Marco Calcagni - E, attraverso questo ascolto, è possibile apprendere richieste particolari a cui dare seguito a livello aziendale”.

In such cases, the dialogue is with the company’s engineers and concerns problems relating to embossing, folding, the different napkin typology or problems connected with productivity so that each machine stoppage is minimised.” From such detailed dialogue with the customer base, Omet’s Technical Customer Service Team has, over the years, been able to recommend individual solutions and develop specific machines, units or accessories. “Listening to the customer is what our Technical Customer Service Team does every day of the week,” concluded Marco Calcagni, “and by listening we get to know about specific enquires that need to be followed by the Company.”

NEW WORKFLOW CONCEPTS DUE TO 100% PRINT IMAGE INSPECTION Whereas in the past the actual defect image was just shown, it is possible today to document uninterruptedly the entire inspection process and to make this inspection protocol continuously available to the printer during production as a so-called “Roll Map”. The operator is thus in a position to identify heavy, repetitive defects and to make a well-considered decision as to whether the machine should be stopped or not. Figure 2 shows a “Roll Map“. Areas will be defined across the web in which defects will be displayed with a rectangular symbol. By clicking on the rectangle the defect image for which the rectangle stands will be displayed to the right for further analysis.

The „Roll Map“ will be edited accordingly and the re-winder will be programmed to stop only at those relevant positions. This so-called „Scheduling“ quite obviously leads to increased productivity compared to the finishing process which uses print image control on the re-winder. With the later processing procedure the re-winder is stopped at every detected defect and the operator is called upon to make a decision before finishing continues. If irrelevant defects occur more or less frequently, these stops will either reduce the productivity or the operator will have to reduce the sensitivity of the print image control system. This decision, however, considerably influences the quality
