è una caratteristica che deve contrassegnare sempre un imprenditore: saper guardare oltre. Ciò vale nei momenti di congiuntura favorevole, come in quelli di crisi. E la fase che stiamo vivendo, purtroppo, appartiene a questi ultimi.

Guardare oltre significa saper innovare: cercare e trovare nuove soluzioni e nuove risposte per le esigenze del mercato, migliorare i propri prodotti e le loro performances, pensare a nuove forme per essere vicini ai propri clienti e alle loro richieste. È con questi obiettivi che OMET ha inserito una nuova isola nel proprio Archipelago, avviando un nuovo accordo di collaborazione con Chromos per il mercato dell’Europa Centrale.

Guardare oltre significa non fermarsi mai, nè di fronte ai più grandi successi, nè di fronte alle più evidenti difficoltà. Su ciascuno di questi eventi, infatti, occorre soffermarsi per imparare dalle esperienze e trovare in esse sempre nuovi stimoli e nuovi spunti per il futuro.

Guardare oltre significa riscoprire il senso della propria “mission”, i valori fondanti di un’impresa, e a partire da essi costruire le premesse per essere pronti, allorché si verificherà il cambiamento.

Alla base di questo atteggiamento sta la fiducia: in sè e nei propri collaboratori, innanzitutto. Ma anche nei clienti e nella loro capacità di cogliere e premiare l’impegno indirizzato ad offrir loro soluzioni sempre più adeguate alle loro necessità.

Penso sia necessario che, anche in questa crisi difficile e inattesa nelle sue proporzioni, si sappia guardare con questo spirito al futuro. Perché dopo ogni tempesta viene il sereno. E se sapremo approfittare anche di questa fase per investire il meglio di noi stessi e delle nostre imprese, potremo uscirne ancora più forti e competitivi.

here’s an attribute that all true entrepreneurs have: the ability to look ahead. This is true when there’s a favourable economic trend as well as in moments of crisis. And, unfortunately, the stage we are at right now is the later!

Looking ahead means being able to innovate: looking for and finding new solutions that respond to the market needs, improving one’s own products and their performances, and thinking of new ways of getting close to one’s own customers and their requirements. It is aiming at these targets that OMET has inserted a new island in its own Archipelago, starting a new cooperation agreement with Chromos for the Central European market.

Looking ahead means never stopping before the biggest success or the most obvious difficulty. We shall ponder each of these factors, draw from the experience and find new enthusiasm and ideas for the future.

Looking ahead means rediscovering the purpose of our mission, the founding values of a firm, and starting from them, building the conditions that allow us to be ready when the change comes.

The basis of such an attitude is confidence: in ourselves and in our partners, first of all. But also in our customers and their capacity to reap the reward of the effort made to offer them more and more appropriate solutions for their needs.

I believe it is essential to be able to look ahead through this difficult and unexpected crisis, in a mood tuned to the future. Because, after every storm, the sun shines through again. And, if we succeed in using this time to invest the best in ourselves and in our firms, we shall emerge even stronger and more competitive.

Innovate to compete successfully in the market and fight the current economic crisis. A simple concept but one that requires courage and vision - qualities that are inherent to Omet’s DNA and once again are shown to be winning.

At the recent international Converflex, Grafitalia, Plast & Ipack-IMA exhibition held at the Milano/Rho centre from 24th to the 28th March, OMET showed its VaryFlex-F1 fitted with 8 units printing at high speed on unsupported shrink.

In occasione del recente appuntamento internazionale rappresentato dal Converflex, svoltosi dal 24 al 28 marzo nel nuovo centro fieristico di Milano/Rho in contemporanea con Grafitalia, Plast ed Ipack-Ima, OMET ha esposto una VaryFlex F1 a 8 colori, che ha stampato su film plastico ad alta velocità e ha dato ampia dimostrazione del nuovo sistema di “cambio al volo”, che consente il cambio del soggetto stampato senza mai

fermare la macchina.

Una dimostrazione dal vivo che ha suscitato l’immediato e convinto consenso dei molti operatori che vi hanno assistito, conquistando per le caratteristiche di qualità di stampa anche agli sbalzi di velocità che la VaryFlex F1 ha dato prova di saper offrire. Al punto che, a manifestazione conclusa, sono state ben tre le nuove macchine vendute: “Un vero successo, ben superiore alle aspettative, considerando anche il particolare momento congiunturale. – ha commentato il Direttore commerciale OMET, Marco Calcagni – è il segno concreto che l’innovazione continua e lo sviluppo dei prodotti sono investimenti strategici che il mercato ripaga”.

Ma i risultati positivi conseguiti da OMET nel corso di Converflex non si fermano qui.

Replicando infatti un modello già sperimentato con successo negli anni passati, OMET ha organizzato in coincidenza con l’appuntamento milanese un Open House di due giorni presso la propria sede, al quale hanno partecipato circa un centinaio di operatori provenienti da tutto il mondo.

Una iniziativa particolarmente apprezzata, grazie anche alla perfetta organizzazione logistica messa in campo da OMET, comprendente, oltre al trasferimento dalla fiera di Milano Rho, anche una cena di gala per gli ospiti.

“A great success, exceeding our expectations, considering the present economic situation,” commented OMET’s Sales Manager Marco Calcagni, “and a sure sign that continuous innovation and development of the product are strategic investments that are repaid by the market.”

But the positive results for OMET during Converflex were many. Following a tradition established in recent years, OMET organised a two-day Open House at its headquarters in Lecco during the exhibition. This was attended by some hundred operators from all over the world. An initiative that was particularly appreciated by the visitors courtesy shuttled on from exhibition to the open house and the gala dinner in Lecco. In addition, the visitors were shown the innovations, including outstanding performance, such as the excellent print quality at top speed, fast set-up and change-over from one job to another, perfect register, even during rapid speed variations of the VaryFlex-F1 with combination of Offset and Flexo printing units.

La dimostrazione della nuova OMET VaryFlex Offset

VaryFlex-F1 with Offset and Flexo printing units The Offset version features a set-up speed of 10 m/min and with its integrated automatic register control and web viewer “Vision 1”, with simple one pushbutton operation, it is easy to produce perfect labels straightaway.

The VaryFlex’s ergonomic design and great accessibility from either side, make life easy for the operator. There are interchangeable cassettes on the rear of each unit, and the print cylinders and inking rollers are separately driven by an electronic shaft (i.e. individual speed and inking control.)

Another important feature of the new OMET Offset unit is the printing width availability of 340 mm or 430 mm (with a 520 mm web width under study). Print length varies from 12 - 25” thanks to the interchangeable cassettes, and speeds of up to 200 m/min are attainable, while a control panel with a monitor and trackball button allows the operator to monitor constantly all the parameters and to intervene whenever needed.

Il nuovo gruppo OMET Offset è caratterizzato da una velocità di settaggio estremamente bassa (10 metri al minuto) e dal pre-registro automatico integrato, oltre che dall’innovativo sistema “Vision 1” by OMET, che consente la messa a registro della stampa, sia longitudinale che trasversale, totalmente in automatico, con il solo utilizzo di un tasto per l’intera operazione.

Particolarmente apprezzato anche il design ergonomico, che si abbina inoltre all’estrema facilità di accesso degli operatori su entrambi i lati, cui si aggiunge la dotazione di cassetti interscambiabili e magazzino formati nella parte posteriore. Il gruppo è poi dotato di motorizzazione indipendente sul cilindro stampa, sui rulli inchiostratori, sul rullo calamaio e sui rulli di bagnatura: ciò significa regolazione di velocità indipendente di ogni asse motorizzato e settaggio automatico delle curve di inseguimento calamaio e bagnatura.

Altre caratteristiche importanti del nuovo gruppo Offset OMET è la larghezza nastro disponibile (da 340 a 430 mm con nastro da 520 mm in fase di sviluppo), la gamma di stampa di ripetizione (da 12” a 25”, con cambio di ripetizione grazie all’inserimento del cassetto intercambiabile a 2 cilindri) e la velocità massima che arriva a 200 m/min.

Altre dimostrazioni sono state eseguite sulla VaryFlex 530 F1 Holofoil-King, con posa di ologrammi di sicurezza a registro con soggetto prestampato fuori linea, e sulla VaryFlex 670 F1 Solvent Lamination, macchina da stampa per imballaggio flessibile con laminazione in linea per l’accoppiamento di materiali plastici utilizzando la laminazione a solvente.

Labels guru Mike Fairley gives his thoughts on the decisions converters should be making to survive in today’s challenging global financial environment and how they should be looking to invest for the future.

There can be few label converters that are not feeling some impact from the global financial and credit crisis, from the world’s deflationary pressures or from the beginnings of what is likely to be a prolonged recession. Some label converters will have seen all the signs before − although maybe not quite so severe.

So what happens at times like this? Customers start to de-stock and wait longer before re-ordering when their own sales fall. Then, they start ordering smaller quantities and look at rationalising their product range to take out their least successful lines. This, in turn, means that the converter’s order book starts to decline and it becomes harder to

Sono pochi i converters di etichette che non sentono l’influenza della attuale crisi finanziaria e di credito globale, delle pressioni deflattive mondiali o dell’inizio di quella che, probabilmente, sarà una fase recessiva prolungata. Alcuni già avevano avvertito prima tutti i segnali della crisi, anche se non in modo così forte.

Cosa succede in situazioni come questa? I clienti, quando le loro vendite diminuiscono, cominciano a ridurre i loro magazzini prima di riordinare. Poi riducono le quantità degli ordinativi e razionalizzano la loro gamma di prodotti, eliminando quelli che hanno meno successo sul mercato. Ciò genera un’ulteriore riduzione delle commesse e, quindi, una diminuzione nell’uti-

lizzo dei loro impianti produttivi. In molti casi inizia una vera e propria “caccia all’ordine”, con l’effetto di una drastica riduzione dei prezzi pur di produrre.

Successivamente, alcuni clienti allungheranno i tempi di pagamento dei loro fornitori di etichette, e chiederanno loro di ridurre i prezzi del 10%. Infine, i fornitori di prodotti di consumo avanzeranno la richiesta di pagamenti più ridotti, rifiutando in caso contrario di estendere il credito.

Si genererà, quindi, per i fornitori di etichette un vero e proprio problema di cashflow, di fronte al quale difficilmente le banche saranno disponibili ad intervenire a supporto. E molti falliranno.

In questo contesto, va detto che i converters più attenti e strutturati avevano già intravisto i segnali della crisi e avevano reagito. In che modo?

Innanzitutto adottando una serie di severe misure di controllo dei costi, in linea con la flessione delle loro vendite: provvedimenti non legati solamente alla produzione, ma anche ad una più prudente gestione finanziaria, ad una riduzione dei materiali di consumo e ad aumento della efficienza degli impianti, oltre ad una più efficiente politica energetica e un più attento utilizzo uso del capitale di funzionamento.

Tutti i reparti dovrebbero partecipare all’azione di controllo e riduzione dei costi: produzione, vendita & marketing, finanza e contabilità.

Tutti, infatti, hanno la responsabilità di contribuire a mantenere l’azienda in vita e a preservarne l’occupazione. Per questo è necessario che a tutti siano assegnati, in periodi come questo, degli obiettivi di riduzione dei costi, che devono essere regolarmente monitorati da chi si occupa della gestione aziendale. A quest’ultima deve spettare il compito di assicurarsi che la riduzione dei costi e la maggior efficienza siano effettivamente ottenute.

Per la gestione della produzione, riduzione del costo e obiettivi di efficienza devono comportare misure ben precise: dalla riduzione dello spreco di materiali e scarto di stampa alla riduzione dei tempi di cambio lavoro e di avviamento,dall’aumento della produttività degli impianti di stampa alla riduzione dei recla-

fill the presses. Too many label converters are then chasing too few orders, competing against each other on price.

Next, customers take longer to pay their printers and some even ask (or tell) their label suppliers to reduce the label price by 10%. On top of this, consumables suppliers may ask for more rapid payment or refuse to extend credit. So, on top of falling orders, the label converter now has a cash flow headache. Then, as with the current global crisis, if the Bank will not help to cover the cashflow needs, the label converter moves into the danger zone and may eventually face financial failure. Some do fail.

However, the best managed converters have seen the signs and already taken action. But, what action can they take? Well, initially they must implement stringent measures to control costs, reducing them in line with their decline in sales – and not just in the production department. Cost reduction, and prudent financial management, covers many aspects of the business, from consumables wastage and improved press efficiency through to energy reduction, more aggressive management of expenses, and use of working capital.

All departments should be involved in controlling or reducing costs: production, sales and marketing, finance and accounts. All have a responsibility to keep the company viable and preserve jobs. All should be given a cost reduction target – within a set timescale − which is monitored regularly by the management team to ensure that savings and efficiencies are actually being made.

For production management, cost reduction and efficiency targets need to incorporate measures that: reduce materials and press wastage; improve turnaround time; reduce downtime with fewer breakdowns; enhance press productivity; reduce complaints; improve control of environmental and energy costs; and overall, create a more efficient and effective production operation. This includes optimising workflow and handling, rationalising material and ink stocks, just-in-time manufacturing, and the implementation of a

In finance and accounts there are a range of issues that can improve financial control, borrowings, assets, depreciation on machines and equipment. Loans may need to be improved through enhanced financial planning and cost controls. Debtor and creditor days need reviewing, and hourly rates and overheads need to be fully reflective of all costs.

Non profitable work must be erased from sales and production.

Sales and marketing have a key role to play in recession. Existing markets and products need to be reviewed: for revenue and profitability (and the best targetted for to revenue growth); to eliminate non-profitable work; to improve quality of service (to retain existing customers); to innovate to meet customer needs; and to improve customer satisfaction.

But, do not abandon marketing and customer communications. Instead make better us of the media - develop joint stories or interesting case studies with suppliers and/or customers - share marketing/promotional costs with others if possible. Converters must stay positive and work with their customers.

Targets and plans must be set and achieved by all departments. Once reached, set a new higher target or move to the next area of cost saving. It will be a never ending task!

Frequently, companies faced with declining sales and poor cashflow take the knee-jerk reaction of making employees redundant.

This may offer immediate relief, but it is short sighted and can be expensive overall. Short term, redundancy payments can be high, while long term, skills are lost, which inevitably means more outworking, higher overtime payments, potential quality issues, and possibly poor delivery. Where are the cost savings then?

Sotto il profilo finanziario esistono numerose aree di miglioramento del sistema di controllo: prestiti, leasing, detrazioni sul macchinario ed equipaggiamento. I prestiti possono essere migliorati con un planning di finanze e controllo dei costi. Giorni debitori e creditori devono essere messi sotto osservazione, le tariffe orarie e le spese generali devono ricomprendere tutti i costi. E, ancora, le commesse non profittevoli devono essere eliminate dalla produzione e dalla commercializzazione.

Le attività commerciali e marketing svolgono un ruolo centrale in una fase recessiva. I mercati e i prodotti esistenti devono essere esaminati in funzione del loro rendimento e della loro profittabilità; occorre poi migliorare la qualità del servizio nei confronti dei clienti esistenti e saper innovare per rispondere alle loro esigenze e migliorarne la soddisfazione. Non vanno abbandonate le azioni di marketing e comunicazione verso i clienti. Vanno sviluppate case-history con fornitori e/o clienti, suddividendo i costi promozionali con altri partners, se possibile. I converters devono rimanere positivi e collaborare con i clienti.

Questi obiettivi e piani devono essere dati e raggiunti da tutti reparti. Appena raggiunti devono esserne fissati di nuovi. Sarà una sfida continua!

Spesso le aziende, di fronte a forti diminuzioni delle vendite e del cash-flow, reagiscono bruscamente con licenziamenti del personale. Ciò può offrire loro un respiro immediato, ma di corte vedute e può costare di più nel medio-lungo termine: disporre di meno risorse e capacità umane significa doversi mettere, in prospettiva, nella

necessità di fare outsourcing, come un aumento dei costi per le ore extra, possibili cadute nella qualità del prodotto e ritardi di consegna.

In molti casi i converters, in presenza di problemi finanziari, spesso decidono di bloccare gli investimenti, nonostante abbiano bisogno invece di acquistare impianti più efficienti. Anche questo è un errore. Anche perché, dopo tutto, se si riesce ad aumentare la produzione e le vendite, è possibile crescere ed ingrandirsi. Un nuovo impianto può permettere di dare valore aggiunto alla produzione e di migliorare i servizi, oltre che di ampliare la gamma dei prodotti, entrando in nuovi segmenti come materiali d’imballaggio flessibili, sacchetti, etichette shrink o stretch.

Anche se non viene acquistata una nuova macchina, i converters devono investire per migliorare il proprio parco-macchine, così da poter offrire più valore e servizio ai propri clienti: dalla protezione della marca all’autenticazione, dalla codifica sequenziale alla numerazione. Si deve così pensare all’aggiunta di pannelli di controllo, gruppi hot o cold foil, elementi stampa rotocalco o offset ad una macchina esistente. E, ancora, aggiunta di gruppi per ologrammi in-line o offline o di un gruppo di fustellatura o taglio.

After all, not everyone’s sales are down; some are more than holding their own and some − even now − are managing to invest and achieve growth. Certainly, it still makes sense to invest in equipment that adds or enhances value, improves or adds services, or widens the potential product range to existing customers. Some diversify into new markets such as flexible packaging, pouches, shrink or stretch sleeves.

Even if the new press is cancelled, converters must consider machine upgrades or addons to offer enhanced value or service to the label buyer − such as brand protection, authentication, leaflet labels, on-serting facilities, sequential coding or numbering. These include: adding a screen, hot or cold foil, gravure or offset unit to an existing press; fitting a hologram dispensing unit on or offline; or adding a twin-cut rotary die-cutting unit or a flying cut unit.

Converters should even consider installing a small sheet fed press to offer other types of print for existing customers, or investing in a digital press to cope with shorter runs, thereby creating extra capacity on their flexo presses to offer new services.

Survive the recession and enjoy a more profitable future!

Sopravvivere alla recessione per un futuro di profitti. er. Holding job data and files that customers can search and see the live status of their orders, stockholding, etc, is all adding value and generating customer loyalty.

Converters could also consider a software investment to access press set up and production data via a remote computer. Nothing should be ruled out while the recession continues.

It is certain that label supply will emerge from this recession somewhat different to how it went in. Buyers will see to that. The survivors will be those who manage information, control performance and add value to products and services. Each converter needs to work closely with the brand owners and customers to reduce costs in the supply chain. This includes accelerated time to market, reduced lead times, rapid response to change, remote proofing, reduced or exact inventory, reductions in ‘out-of-shelf ’ situations, on-demand production.

The converters of today need to ensure that they are lean and fit for the label world of tomorrow. Finding money for investment might be difficult, but those who get it right now, will undoubtedly grow and succeed when the recession finally ends – as end it will - and they will certainly be more profitable!

Ancora andrebbe valutata la possibilità di un upgrading del loro sistema di gestione delle informazioni o qualche altra soluzione software in grado di offrire vantaggi al trasformatore ed al suo cliente. Per esempio conservando i dati dei diversi lavori e mettendo in grado i clienti di conoscere sempre lo stato attuale dei loro ordini o lo stato del magazzino. Tutto ciò che dà valore aggiunto al ciente si trasforma in uno strumento per la sua fidelizzazione.

Non si dovrebbe escludere nulla fin quando durerà la recessione. Ed è certo che il mercato delle etichette, al termine di questa fase, si presenterà diverso da quello attuale.

Sopravvivranno i clienti che sapranno gestire le informazioni, monitorare le proprie performance e aggiungere valore ai prodotti e ai servizi che offrono. Ogni converter dovrà saper collaborare con i marchi propri clienti per ridurre il costo della “supply chain”. Ciò richiede tempi accelerati per il marketing, capacità di reazione al cambiamento, prova stampa a distanza, inventario ridotto ed esatto, flessibilità di produzione.

Dovranno infine garantire di saper diventare snelli e pronti per il mondo delle etichette di domani. Trovare i soldi per effettuare investimenti sarà probabilmente difficile, ma chi saprà agire bene adesso, senza dubbio crescerà e avrà successo quando finalmente la recessione finirà. E finirà sicuramente.

From pre-register to insertion of new text or graphics The aim of this new technique is simple: it allows the insertion and register of new text or graphics while the machine continues to run at full speed. Applications for this new technique are many and various.

In its simplest form it offers pre-register, which removes the age old technique of using operator know how to get the job into register. But, its real advantage and most frequent use will be the ability to ‘change on the fly’ to insert or replace label text (the language, a bar code etc) without stopping the machine (eg - the same label, but written in a different language). Inserimento al volo di una o più stampe Nel caso di questa applicazione, che andrà effettuata alla velocità di produzione, occorre che, a monte, l’operatore abbia già effettuato la regolazione delle pressioni di stampa, abbia già inserito il carrello di inchiostrazione e si trovi con la stampa master (quella che stampa la tacca) in stampa. Al momento opportuno, da pannello operatore principale (tramite apposito pulsante presente sulle pagine di ogni stampa) o da consolle locale (dell’unità di stampa) sarà possibile inserire al volo la stampa o le stampe prescelte. L’aggiustaggio finale andrà fatto o da Vision o da pagina controllo registro. Sarà anche eventualmente possibile disinserire le stampe non più utilizzate, mentre, per ovvi motivi, non sarà possibile disinserire la stampa master.

Messa a registro ristampa - Nel caso di messa a registro di una ristampa, si procederà come per il pre-registro. Unica eccezione sarà rappresentata dal primo punto: infatti, dal momento che la tacca sarà già stampata, si inseriranno semplicemente al volo le stampe che devono ristampare.

Established in 1962 and developed as a family company, Mida is controlled by the Fund DGPA Capital that is managed

by DGPA Sgr at present, along with CEO Paolo Boldoni in cooperation with Chief Accountant Giuseppe Vanoli. Mr Vanoli is a key person in the company’s history and a Member of the Board of Directors that is in charge of strategic development.

The acquisition of MCG from Gallarate (VA), a company specialising in sleeve production, is part of that strategic plan.

The labels are produced from plastic film, PVC/PET/OPS printed UV-flexo and then shrunk onto packaging. They are widely used in the food & beverage, personal care, cleansing and cosmetic sectors. This operation represents the first real step of the development plan for this important company which - in a very fragmented sector, where a progressive concentration seems to be inevitable - aims at growing and enriching the range of solutions on offer, and entering new market segments at a high rate of development.

“Wrapping a sleeve around a package represents a substantial integration of the solutions offered by self adhesive labels, which have always been Mida’s core business”, explained Giuseppe Vanoli. “Thanks to the larger space available they permit a more comprehensive and engaging communication, and in the case of a complete coating of tops or covers, they also carry out the function of a warranted seal, which is very important for products sold in the large scale retail trade. The sleeve represents a natural diversification that allows Mida to supply a complete range of labelling solutions for food, cosmetic, chemical, and pharmaceutical companies”.

At its own 5,000 sqm production facility in San Salvatore in Malnate, situated on a 17,000 sqm plot, 13 printing lines, using various technologies, combine with 5 control tables and 2 systems to check 100% of label output. The production range is particularly wide, covering all of the most important application sectors and diverse substrates: paper, acetate, polythene, polypropylene, polyester, vinyl substrates, and synthetic fabrics.

Mida’s self adhesive labels, printed in up to 8 colours by rotary letterpress, offset, digital, waterless offset, flexo, screen and combination processes, can be varnished and plasticised, numbered with printing on the silicon substrate and directly onto the adhesive. The type of adhesive used changes to suit the specific use of the label.

For example, in the oenological and liquid food sector there is a requirement for very sophisticated labels both in terms of self adhesive material refinement and print technologies. Mida also has a special department, fully air-conditioned, and dedicated to digital print for short runs and waterless offset for medium and longer runs. In the cosmetic field, Mida has specialist know-how that allows it to support the companies in the sector by producing beautiful, attractive, and well printed labels in every detail. In particular, Mida produces labels with a “non-label” and squeezable look.

In the pharmaceutical sector, Mida is currently a partner to many of the leading manufacturers. All phases of a job are carried out in a department dedicated to production techniques that comply with the procedures needed to guarantee the quality and accuracy of every label. Production

In funzione dell’utilizzo specifico dell’etichetta, cambia anche la tipologia dell’adesivo utilizzato. È il caso, ad esempio, del settore enologico e dei liquidi alimentari, che richiede etichette molto sofisticate sia per la ricercatezza dei materiali autoadesivi che delle tecnologie di stampa. Mida dispone di un reparto specifico, completamente condizionato, dedicato alla stampa con procedimento digitale per piccoli quantitativi e offset waterless per medi e grossi quantitativi. Anche in ambito cosmetico Mida dispone di uno specifico know-how per supportare le aziende del settore nel realizzare etichette belle, seducenti, ben stampate in ogni dettaglio. In particolare Mida realizza etichette con effetto “nolabel-look” e squeazable.

Last but not least, is the industrial domain, for which Mida makes self adhesive plain or printed labels in continuous form, in one or more rows, up to a maximum width of 480mm including form drag. After acquiring MCG, Mida’s next step was to buy a new OMET printing and converting line. Una delle procedure che si stanno segnalando per un sempre maggiore impiego da parte di chi opera nel converting è quella della laminazione a secco, che permette la realizzazione di accoppiati/laminati con lo scopo di unire differenti film in un’unica struttura.

I “pro” e i “contro” di questo processo Con questo processo vengono utilizzati adesivi a

base solvente, che con estrema facilità raggiungono una buona bagnatura ed è possibile utilizzare numerose tipologie di film per creare una grande varietà di laminati.

Molteplici i vantaggi che essa comporta. Non solo, infatti, è possibile accoppiare fra loro molti tipi di materiali, ottenendo una elevata forza di adesione fra gli strati. Ma si tratta anche di un processo economico, vista la breve linea di trasformazione e i bassi scarti, e particolarmente adatto per la stampa, grazie all’alta stabilità dimensionale del processo. Inoltre le larghezze dei film possono essere cambiate facilmente sostituendo il rullo di impressione. I prodotti laminati che così si ottengono hanno infine buona rigidità, che li rende adatti a processi secondari come taglio e formazione di imballaggi con riempitrici automatiche.

Certo, è necessario adottare una serie di comportamenti e attenzioni particolari. L’uso di adesivi a base solvente richiede infatti la monitorizzazione della quantità di solvente residuo e il controllo del tipo di solventi utilizzati. Inoltre, a laminazione finita, è molto difficile eliminare completamente il solvente residuo. La reazione innescata dall’adesivo richiede poi un certo tempo di stoccaggio.

Altre precauzioni da adottare riguardano il minuzioso controllo della spalmatura dell’adesivo richiesto per impedire la formazione di irregolarità nell’accoppiamento e garantire la giusta adesione e quello, altrettanto attento, della tensione nello svolgimento per eliminare possibili problemi come la formazione di bolle o fori. Infine occorre sottolineare come l’adesivo vada sempre accuratamente scelto in base al materiale da accoppiare e al successivo uso che ne dovrà fare.

The advantages it offers are manifold. Not only is it possible to join a lot of different types of materials together, obtaining high adhesion strength between the layers. But, it is also a cost effective process, considering the short converting line and low waste levels, which makes it particularly suitable for print thanks to its high dimensional stability. In addition, film widths can easily be changed, merely by replacing the impression roll. Laminated products obtained in this way have a high finished strength, which makes them suitable for secondary processes like cutting and packaging formation with automatic filling machines.

However, it is important to adopt a set of special rules and regulations. The use of solventbase adhesives demands close monitoring of the quantity of residual solvent and scrutiny of the type of solvents used. Moreover, when the lamination is finished, it is very difficult to completely eliminate the residual solvent.

The reaction triggered by the adhesive requires a certain stacking down time.

Other precautions to be adopted include precise control of the required adhesive coating to prevent coupling irregularities from forming and to guarantee the right adhesion. In addition, tension needs to be controlled in unwinding to eliminate possible problems such as bubble or hole formation. Finally, we must stress the importance of ensuring that the adhesive is always carefully chosen according to the material to be coupled and its subsequent use.

To guarantee similar temperatures and constant web tension of materials in the laminating area, the unit is provided with heated calenders and independent tension controls. After lamination a cooling calender is also available.

To aid glue drying, the unit is completed by an upper tunnel composed of separate drying chambers with independent setting.

A success for the first installations The first VaryFlex with the new lamination unit has been tested with satisfaction by the final customer and it is being installed at present. One more machine is being produced and will be delivered to Central America within this year.

Successo per le prime installazioni La prima VaryFlex con il nuovo gruppo di laminazione a secco è stata collaudata con soddisfazione dal cliente finale ed attualmente in fase di installazione. Un’altra macchina è in produzione e sarà consegnata in Centro America entro l’anno.

Le tre funzioni consentite L’applicazione è composta principalmente da tre sezioni con differenti funzionalità: 1. STATO della MACCHINA: vi si possono visualizzare tutte le informazioni sullo stato attuale della macchina come se ci si trovasse di fronte al pannello operatore.

2. DATI di PRODUZIONE: è possibile acquisire in questa sezione (su comando o in scansione continua) i dati relativi alla produttività della macchina, permettendone il salvataggio in fogli di calcolo esterni che possono così essere facilmente analizzati e manipolati con le più diffuse suite d’ufficio.

3. GESTIONE delle RICETTE: in modo bidirezionale, tra macchina e ufficio, e viceversa. Grazie a questo software è pertanto possibile: a) salvare sul PC di supervisione - che funge da “archivio storico”- i lavori preparati in macchina, in modo da espanderne all’infinito la memoria (limitata a 100 ricette) e fungere da back-up b) trasferire nuovamente in macchina ricette precedentemente salvate c) editare direttamente sul PC di supervisione le ricette dei lavori da eseguire in macchina, per poi scaricarli nella memoria del sistema di controllo della macchina, dalla quale l’operatore potrà richiamarle con facilità.

The software, working as a client, sends inquiries (messages) about reading and writing the variables allocated in the memory of the machine’s main PLC (working as a server) through the ethemet network on the machine. The controlling PC must be connected to a switch on the main electric board of the machine or directly linked through the router used for remote assistance which ensures the machine access to the network from computers that do not belong to such a domain.

The application is principally composed of three sections with different functionalities: 1. STATE of the MACHINE: all the information on the present state of the machine can be visualised as if you were in front of the operator’s panel.

2. PRODUCTION DATA: it is possible to acquire data concerning the machine productivity in this section (on command or continuous scanning), allowing it to be saved on external calculation sheets that can be easily analysed and handled using the most widespread office suites.

3. RECIPE MANAGEMENT: bi-directional, machine <> office.

Thanks to this software it is possible to: a) save the jobs, prepared on the machine, on the controlling PC – working as ‘historical record’ – so that the memory (limited to 100 menus) is expanded infinitely and works as a back-up b) transfer previously saved menus into the machine again c) directly edit the menus of the jobs to be carried out in the machine on the controlling PC and then download them into the memory of the machine control system, from where the operator can recall them easily. That allows separating the preparation tasks (organizer) and job execution (printer).

Grafica Zannini’s history dates back to 1967, when the first factory was built in Ospedaletto, in the industrial area of Pisa. We met Mr Giampaolo Semboloni, Manager of the Self Adhesive Labels Department, who explained to us how continued technological and organisational development enables the company to stay at the forefront of guarantees for accuracy and reliability. “All stages of production, from pre-printing to delivery, are subject to constant attention and follow strict control procedures and checks in order to guarantee our clients that their products comply with the requisite quality standards of the pharmaceutical industry,” he explained.

Clemson University, located in Clemson, SC, USA, is an institution acclaimed for its focus on printing and packaging studies. The university recently welcomed a new addition to its facilities, opening the doors to the brand new Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics. The institute is poised to become the global leader in packaging design and graphics technology and research, and a major contributor to the institute’s endeavors is OMET, the award winning press manufacturer based in Lecco, Italy.

A true partnership has developed between OMET and the Sonoco Institute, and its centerpiece is the installation of an OMET VaryFlex-F1 530 seven-color press at the institute. The press, which OMET has donated to the school, will be housed in the brand new Harris A. Smith building located on Clemson’s campus.

press, due to its extraordinary capabilities, is a perfect fit to meet the institute’s needs. The press includes seven printing stations that can be configured for rotary screen, flexography or gravure, with a variety of solvent, water based and UV curable ink systems. The press platform can handle polymer substrates as thin as 12 microns, or paperboard materials as heavy as 600 microns, while achieving high end registration through a complete servo controlled system.

The flexibility of the press was one aspect that drew the institute to OMET, particularly when it comes to the needs of printed electronics applications. “When we were looking for a company to partner with, we were looking for one that could support our flexible packaging needs, both solvent and water based, and multiple processes – both gravure and flexo.

With printed electronics, you need to have variable printing processes and the ability to mix and match,” says Chip Tonkin, director of the Sonoco Institute.

At the 2008 Drupa exhibition, Tonkin met Marco Calcagni, OMET’s sales director, and explained to him the Sonoco Institute’s direction and philosophy.

Here, the seeds for the partnership were planted. “Upon speaking with Mr. Tonkin about Clemson’s project, I was immediately drawn to it for two reasons. First,

OMET ha questo tipo di visione e di desiderio,” afferma Tonkin.

The VaryFlex press is also poised to expand as needed, in order to meet the needs of the institute. Amerigo Manzini, R&D manager for OMET, talks about the machine’s versatility and potential. “The VaryFlex is a true multi-substrate press with the ability to print on any substrate from .5 mil unsupported film to 24 pt board. It offers combination printing with HD flexo, silkscreen cassettes, gravure cassettes, and hot/cold foil cassettes that can slide in to any station on the press.

Additionally, OMET has an offset print station that can be added to the VaryFlex to make it an even more versatile platform. The press platform at Clemson will change and expand as Clemson’s requirements grow,” Manzini says.

Tonkin emphasizes that while the press is a remarkable fit for the institute, there are other intangible factors that make OMET the true partner the institute was looking for. “Once we put together our requirements, we realized that there were really only a handful of companies that had the capabilities we desired, and from a partnership standpoint, a company that would benefit from what we have to offer.

We wanted a company with vision, one that would raise the bar of research and learning, and one where we could get immersed in each other’s R&D. Omet has that vision and that desire,” Tonkin says.

The R&D the Sonoco Institute’s students and teachers, as well as OMET’s team look forward to, is based on what Tonkin describes as the school’s holistic approach to packaging design. He says the institute’s four areas of focus are packaging design workflows, sustainability, the consumer experience, and printed electronics.

Our pitch to the industry is that you can come here to Clemson and make your ideas work,” he says, adding that plans include the printing of solar panels and lighting.

OMET’s engineering team is looking forward to cooperating with Clemson to develop and test new packaging technologies and processes, especially concerning printed electronics, Manzini says, and is enthusiastic about the partnership. “The ability to partner with Clemson at the new Sonoco Packaging Institute is very exciting. This will be a cutting edge facility that will push the boundaries of packaging. We are an engineering focused company and innovation is our passion, and this matches well with the focus of the institute,” adds Manzini.

A true partnership is a mutually beneficial relationship, and in addition to sharing in R&D endeavors, another purpose is being served on the business end of OMET’s operations. The facility at Clemson will also serve as OMET’s North American press demonstration and training center, giving the company a permanent home at one of the most distinguished graphic arts universities in North America, thus providing the opportunity to expand the company’s presence across the Atlantic.

“North American customers are more receptive to traveling to a US based facility for demonstrations, rather than traveling to Europe. This makes it easier for these customers to see first-hand the quality, dependability and flexibility of OMET’s VaryFlex platform. In effect, the cooperation with Clemson also provides US con-

The heart of Città Alta There is a small square behind the Palazzo della Ragione that is overlooked by the Duomo, the cathedral designed by Filarete, in whose honour there are several large canvases. Among them you can see the martyrdom of St John Bishop by G.B. Tiepolo.

Also in the small square is a polychrome marble prothyrum with column-bearing lions by Giovanni da Campione. It marks the entrance to the Basilica of S.Maria Maggiore, the most important monument in the town.

Built in the 12th century, the basilica preserves the original Romanesque structure outside. The Greek cross plant also remains intact, but the interior was changed in the sixteenth and seventeenth century and is sumptuous. Here we find precious tapestries, and the tomb of the composer and musician Gaetano Donizetti and his master Simon Mayr. Simbolo della città - cui ci si può arrivare con una rapida ma caratteristica funicolare - è Piazza Vecchia: formatasi già nel ‘300, raggiunge la sua forma attuale durante la dominazione veneta, di cui costituisce il principale avamposto verso ovest e il Milanese fino all’epoca napoleonica.

Sul lato sud della piazza domina il Palazzo della Ragione, che richiama all’età comunale; sulla destra svetta la torre civica (XIIXV sec.), nota anche come “il Campanone”, e si colloca l’antica Domus Suardorum (XIV-XV sec.), oggi sede dell’Università di Bergamo. Il lato nord della piazza è chiuso da un palazzo seicentesco con facciata in marmo bianco che ospita la Biblioteca Civica “A. Mai”. Al centro della scenografica piazza una l’elegante fontana.

Il cuore della Città Alta Dietro il Palazzo della Ragione, si apre una piazzetta su cui si affaccia il Duomo, nato da un progetto del Filarete, nella cui abside sono collocate sette grandi tele, fra cui Il martirio di S.Giovanni Episcopo di G.B. Tiepolo. Sempre nella piazzetta un protiro in marmo policromo con leoni stilofori, opera di Giovanni da Campione, segnala l’accesso alla Basilica di S.Maria Maggiore, il più importante monumento della città. Costruita nel XII sec., la basilica ha conservato all’esterno la struttura romanica originaria. L’impianto è a croce greca, ma l’interno, modificato nel ‘500 e nel ‘600, si presenta suntuoso. Qui troviamo preziosi arazzi e la tomba del compositore e musicista Gaetano Donizetti e del suo maestro Simon Mayr. Di grande pregio sono le tarsie di coro e iconostasi eseguite nel ‘500 su disegni di Lorenzo Lotto.

The symbol of the town - which you can reach by means of a fast and characterful cableway - is the Piazza Vecchia: dating back to the fourteenth century, it acquired its present shape during the Venetian period, when it became the main outpost for the west and the area surrounding Milan, right up until the Napoleonic age. The Palazzo della Ragione dominates the southern side of the square and recalls the Commune age, while the Civic Tower (12th–15th century) - also known as the “Campanone” (the “Big Bell”) - looms up on the right near the ancient Domus Suardorum (14th-15th century) – today, the seat of the University of Bergamo. The northern side of the square is closed by a seventeenth century palace with a white marble façade housing the Municipal Library “A. Mai”. valuable. Next to the basilica there is the Colleoni Chapel (15th century), a mausoleum in memory of Bartolomeo Colleoni, the famous leader during the Venetian Republic and Captain General of the Venetian army.

It was designed by G. B. Amadeo, a sculptor and architect engaged in the great building of the Pavia Chartusian Monastery. The polychrome marble façade, the octagonal drum of the chapel and the pointed pinnacle of the lantern are linked up to the prothyrum of the basilica and the rich decoration represents a magnificent example of the Lombard Renaissance. The last building adorning this small square is the baptistery.

The taste of the local cuisine Via Colleoni, also known as Corsaröla, connects Piazza Vecchia to Piazza della Cittadella and is the heart of Città Alta. It is full of restaurants, cafés, and clubs where you can try many of the flavours that typify produce from the province: from cheese and charcuterie to the traditional and well-known dishes from Bergamo “casoncelli” and “polenta”. An important part of local cuisine is the dessert: from Donizetti’s cake, dedicated to the great musician from Bergamo, to the traditional “Polenta e Osei”, a sweet interpretation of a typical local dish.

The Venetian walls You cannot leave Città Alta without a visit to the fortress built on St. Euphemia’s hill in 1331. It offers the most fascinating view of the town below and the plains from its 6200 metre long Venetian walls that were built in the second half of 16th century to fence the town and make it into a real fortress. Bergamo today, is still one of four Italian towns (along with Ferrara, Lucca, and Grosseto) that have a historic centre completely surrounded by walls, which have managed to keep their original appearance almost completely intact.

Le mura venete Non è possibile abbandonare la Città Alta prima di essere saliti alla rocca, costruita nel 1331 sul colle di Santa Eufemia. Ma la vista certamente più suggestiva sulla città sottostante e sulla pianura la si gode passeggiando lungo le mura venete, la cintura di bastioni lunga 6200 metri che fu realizzata nella seconda metà del ‘500 e che trasformò la città alta in una vera e propria fortezza. Bergamo, così, è tuttora una delle quattro città italiane (assieme a Ferrara, Lucca e Grosseto), il cui centro storico è rimasto completamente circondato dalle mura che, a loro volta, hanno mantenuto pressoché intatto il loro aspetto originario.

There are four main consumer brands owned by Ipek Kagit: Selpak, Solo, Silen and Servis, one for each market segment.

“Different brands in each market,” – explained Eda Tuncel, Product Manager of Ipek Kagit, “enable us to target consumers from diverse socio-economic segments.

Selpak is the flagship brand at the high end of the market, whereas Solo is positioned as a value-for-money brand in the standard segment. For economy-focused consumers Silen represents the toilet roll category, and Servis the napkin one: both offer acceptable quality at a low price.”

located in its prestigious premises in Istanbul in the Kanyon Office Tower and also at its site in Yalova, 150 kilometres east of Istanbul, which ranks among the leading production plants in Europe in terms of capacity, technological infrastructure and quality. This is where the production of Ipek Kagit is concentrated, mainly focused on toilet rolls, napkins, handkerchiefs, kitchen towels and facial tissues for home and commercial purposes.

But soon, next September, a new important production plant will open in the Manisa industrial area, in western Turkey, where new converting machinery will be installed.

Besides being the foremost supplier of tissue paper products to the Turkish market, Ipek Kagit is a major local exporter of semifinished and finished products to European, Middle Eastern, Central Asian and Caucasian markets. Within the last three years, Ipek Kagit has begun exporting her products to more than 30 countries on three different continents. The goal is to become the market leader in the Caucasian and Central Asian markets through a true geographical expansion project. The project led Ipek Kagit to undertake marketing activities in the Caucasus and Kazakhstan in 2005, which peaked with the establishment of Ipek Kagit Kazakhstan in January 2006.

Fundamental to Ipek Kagit’s development is a decisive orientation towards customers’ needs. A path that led to the company winning the highest accolade in Turkey, the TÜSİAD-Kalder National Quality Prize in 1997, and to become the first tissue producer in Turkey to obtain ISO 9002 certification.

Since 1990 Sumner Printing has been making placemats and trayliners for the restaurant industry with a large production that exceeds 6 million pieces a day.

Two of the key factors in the US company’s success are its high productivity and versatility. The six powerful printing machines at the site in New Hampshire one of which has a maximum production speed of 130,000 pieces per hour, 3-up allow Sumner Printing to offer customers the possibility of printing a double message in four colours on each mat.

Customisation of the product is virtually limitless. For example, the placemat edges can be rounded or scallop finished, to name but two variations.

In addition colouring books and four-page menus can also be printed, thanks to online and offline folders.

As placemats are still its main line, Sumner Printing decided in 2007 to broaden its production range even further to serve different market segments and usages.

These include traymats for hospitals and nursing homes, to children’s colouring books, and take-away menus.

But, in 2008, with the completion of the new factory on a 2,000 sq/m site entirely dedicated to napkin production that Sumner Printing was able to really make a further quality jump by providing its customers with a one stop source for their restaurant place setting requirements.

Sumner Printing’s partner in this new challenge is Omet’s technology, and over the past two years it has installed two Omet TV-503 napkin folding machines. After the excellent results obtained from the first machine, which took Sumner Printing into the quarter-folded dinner napkin market, the US company decided to broaden its product capacity and install a second machine, which increased its production capacity to over 2 million napkins a day.

According to the owner, Michael Davis: “The first Omet TV-503 napkin machine was very productive and enabled us to go

Ad affiancare l’azienda in questa sua nuova sfida è la tecnologia OMET: nel nuovo stabilimento, infatti, sono state installate, negli ultimi due anni, ben due macchine piegatrici per tovaglioli OMET TV-503.

Dopo infatti gli ottimi risultati ottenuti con il primo impianto, che ha portato Sumner Printing nel mercato dei tovaglioli da cena con piega ¼, l’azienda statunitense ha deciso di ampliare la capacità e l’offerta di prodotti installandone una seconda, portando la sua capacità produttiva a superare o 2 milioni di tovaglioli al giorno.

Secondo il proprietario Michael Davis, “La prima macchina per tovaglioli OMET TV-503 è stata molto produttiva e ci ha

permesso di andare in produzione rapidamente e con risultati eccellenti.”

La nuova OMET TV-503 di Sumner include due gruppi stampa flexo e la possibilità di produrre tovaglioli da cena con piega 1/8 e da pranzo e cena con piega ¼ . Wipes have been used in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and hospital sectors in recent years. Thanks to their optimal resistance to chemical agents, usage has also become widespread in industry, both in the automotive and printing sectors. As previously mentioned, their household use for cleaning and sanitation purposes is expanding thanks to groundbreaking products developed at the request and with the assistance of the large scale retail trade.

The features that make non-wovens suitable for the production of cleansing folded items to remove spots or dust are mainly their resistance and softness to touch, especially in the so called spunbonded process.

Non-woven and folded products Applications in the field of folded products are many. This means there are opportunities for all converters of hygienic products.

But what are the differences compared with traditional tissue napkins and what features do the production machines require to convert these materials?

We have identified the main differences and shown the important features and criteria that need to be met for each one.

Material weight - Synthetic materials weigh more than tissue. Typical weights are 60/80 gsm, but it is not unusual to find materials of 200 gsm and over! So, web tension control, roll sizing and a folding system capable of handling the material, all need to be taken into account.

Le caratteristiche che rendono adatto il nonwoven alla produzione di articoli piegati idonei alla pulizia, per rimuovere macchie o per spolverare sono principalmente la resistenza e la morbidezza al tatto, specialmente nella lavorazione cosiddetta spunbonded.

Non-woven e prodotti piegati Nel campo dei prodotti piegati le applicazioni sono molteplici, quindi esiste un’opportunità per tutti i trasformatori di prodotti di igiene. Ma quali sono le differenze, rispetto al più tradizionale tovagliolo in carta tissue, e quali devono essere quindi le caratteristiche del macchinario idoneo alla trasformazione di questi materiali?

Abbiamo identificato qui di seguito le principali differenze, indicando per ognuna le criticità e i criteri di scelta da seguire.

Peso del materiale - I materiali sintetici hanno grammatura molto più alta rispetto al tissue, nonostante lo standard si aggiri sui 60/80 gsm, non è impossibile trovare materiali di 200 gsm e oltre! Wipe format - Considering the variety of intended uses, it is quite likely that the wipe dimensions will reach 60 cm. It is therefore essential that the machinery is able to accommodate rolls of this width and be capable of folding up to this size.

Coating - Some household applications require a coating of wax or other chemical products to improve the attraction of dust particles. This makes it important to have suitable coating systems available.

Printability/Drying - Synthetic material is less absorbent than tissue paper, so ink formulation and drying systems need to be fit for differing conditions.

Separation and packaging - The use of fully automatic lines is advisable for large scale production. Handling heavy material, which often has poor stiffness, requires particular care in the separation process.

The higher density and elasticity of the product also needs to be taken into account for packaging.

Efficiency - There is a potential problem, especially with longer runs, that the great thickness of the material can severely reduce the life of the blank rolls in the unwinding process, sometimes to only a few minutes! This could result in a significant drop in the real production time and consequently a loss of converting margin.

The use of automatic splicing systems offer a competitive advantage for non-stop operation of the line, since they reduce stoppage times to virtually zero, and eliminate problems associated with frequent stops due to roll changes. Separazione e confezionamento - Per grosse produzioni, si consiglia l’utilizzo di linee totalmente automatiche. La manipolazione di materiale pesante e spesso con caratteristiche di scarsa rigidità richiede una cura particolare nel processo di separazione. Anche il confezionamento deve tener presente la maggiore densità ed elasticità del prodotto.

Efficienza - Si tratta di un fattore fondamentale, specialmente nelle grosse tirature.

Lo spessore elevato del materiale fa sì che la durata delle bobine madri in svolgitura sia estremamente ridotta, a volte nell’ordine di alcuni minuti solamente! Ciò potrebbe tradursi in un calo importante del tempo effettivo di produzione, e ridurre in maniera significativa i margini sulla trasformazione.

The machine has been working for 6 years now, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In the case of film print we need to consider that Latin America has already got a strong tradition of printing on narrow web presses with water-based colours: “We decided to exhibit in fairs where we had the opportunity to show the very high quality that the UV-curing inks could give along with the possibility to interchange flexo and silk-screen, gravure, cold and hot foil, hologram application units with save foil system, thus opening the way to make flexible packaging, unthinkable up to this moment. OMET’s technology allows to keep the best register during all the run. That’s why, after some trade fairs with a large affluence of printers, the same customers got in touch with us”.

“After many installations we could start selling presses to print film in line with solvent-based colours. The advantages we acquired in the narrow-web sector allowed us to be the first to offer an added value both in printing and in solventbased in-line lamination with material widths from 430mm to 850mm. One of these presses, with 9 colours in line plus lamination, will be installed before the end of the year in Central America”.

These are important results that the international crisis is only partly braking: “Spain is certainly the nation where the crisis is more greatly felt. Among the countries in Central and South America, Brazil is the one which is showing the greatest dynamism”.
