THE CORE OF THE PROJECT IS THE
CIRCULATION AXIS THAT DIVIDES DIF-
FERENT SPACE TYPES IN EVERY LEVEL.
SINCE THE MAIN AREAS ARE ADJACENT TO THE FACADE, EACH FLOOR HAS A
DISTINCTIVE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE BLOCK INTERIOR, IN ORDER TO INCREASE SUN EXPOSURE.
THE
GROUND FLOOR IS PUBLIC, WITH
ITS SUPPORT SERVICES IN THE BASEMENT. VELS
THE

DAYS.
THE
INTEN-
TION WAS TO DESIGN OF A COMPACT, UNITARY AND MONOLITHIC ARCHI-
TECTURAL OBJECT, WHERE THE FLOOR PLAN RESULTED FROM THE BLENDING OF
THREE
GEOMETRICAL
FIGURES
(TRIANGLE, SQUARE AND CIRCLE). THE
FACADE AND ROOF OPENINGS ALSO RESPONDED TO A SERIES OF RULES.
AFTERWARDS, EACH INDIVIDUAL COTTAGE WAS POSITIONED NEXT TO A SELECTED LAKE.
WITH THIS EXERCISE, IT S POSSIBLE TO MAKE THE MASSIVE PRODUCTION OF SEVERAL BUILDINGS AN INSTINCTIVE IMPULSE, EXERCISING THE CRITICAL CAPA-
CITY AND INDIVIDUALITY. IN THE END, A CATALOG OF NEARLY
300 ANONY-
MOUS PROJECTS WAS ASSEMBLED.

THE AMERICAN CAMPUS IN THE 20TH CENTURY
INDIVIDUAL PROJECT ¦ 2015/2016 ¦ 5TH YEAR ¦ MENTOR: TERESA HEITOR ¦ IST
THE WORK S SUBJECT IS THE NORTH AMERICAN UNIVERSITY CAMPUS IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURY. ITS GOAL IS TO STUDY THE DIFFERENT CAMPUSES BY THEIR URBAN AND ARCHITECTONIC MORPHOLOGY AND THEIR INCLUSION IN THE CITY, HIGHLIGHTING THE VARIOUS STRATEGIES REGARDING THE PRODUCTION AND OCCUPATIONAL PROCESSES. BASED ON THREE CASE STUDIES:
THE
ANALYSIS WAS
1) MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY IN CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS (1916);
2) FLORIDA SOUTHERN COLLEGE IN LAKELAND, FLORIDA (1922) AND 3) ILLINOIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY IN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (1943). THE
STUDIED CAMPUSES FORMATION AND EVOLUTION PROCESSES AND THEIR INTEGRATION IN THE CITY WERE ESTABLISHED
USING MORPHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS METHODS AND TOOLS, MAINLY THE
SPACE SYNTAX THEORY. THE DISSERTATION WAS DEVE-
LOPED IN FOUR STAGES: BIBLIOGRAPHIC RESEARCH AND GATHERING OF INFORMATION; VARIABLE IDENTIFICATION; MORPHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS; INTERPRETATION AND COMPARISON OF THE RESULTS.
THE
WORK DEVELOPMENT IS DIVIDED IN TWO MAIN MOMENTS.
THE HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF THE
THE
FIRST ONE COVERS THE STUDY CONTEXTUALIZATION, I.E.
AMERICAN UNIVERSITY CAMPUS. THE SECOND ONE COMPREHENDS THE ANALYSIS OF THE
ACTUAL CASE STUDIES, IN TERMS OF MORPHOLOGY AND RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CITY. ANALYZED AND STUDIED IN A COMPARATIVE MANNER.
FINALLY
THE THREE CAMPUSES WERE
FROM THIS ANALYSIS IT S POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE STUDIED CAMPUSES THROUGH THEIR STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES, IN TERMS OF ARCHITECTURE, PLANNING, EVOLUTION PROCESSES AND CITY INSERTION.
