Caterina Victoria GarcĂa I was born in Miami, Florida. I want to be an interior architect because I have always wanted to shape the spaces in which people live their lives, I want to help create spaces which make people’s lives easier and more beautiful.
Project 1 - Analytical Mapping CONCEPT STATEMENT: This drawing represents the School of Architecture through my own experiences. My main focus here was on the first impressions one has of the buildings, which are most highly affected by the facades. I also wanted to focus on the element which I felt most affected my work, which is the lighting in each individual building. The facades of each of the buildings were unfolded to create a graphic rep resentation of various surface conditions. Lighting was also portrayed through the use of dots, which represent spotlighting, and shadows, denoting a darker space.

Project 2 - Concept construction
GarcĂa CONCEPT EXTRAPOLATION: The main things that I focused on when studying PCA were the interconnection of the people within the building, the hierarchy of people and spaces, the effect of lighting on various spaces, and the transparency caused by the chosen building materials. I wanted to focus on thos qualities which most affect those that frequent the building, such as color, lighting, and materiality. CONCEPT STATEMENT: Transparency through layering planes, hierarchy of space, breaking apart of a whole to reveal its pieces, and the effect of surface manipulation on lighting conditions.
Project 3 - Theatrical Space Design DESIGN INSPIRATION: The inspiration that I drew from Prospero’s books came from the Book of Languages, the Book of Motion, the Primer of Small Stars and the Bestiary of Past, Present, and Future Animals, and the Book of Mirrors. The rich textures and layering of different information in the film as well as the ideas behind each of the individual books is what led me to use these five books in particular to create my theater space. From the Book of Languages, I derived the idea of origin, while focusing on the many components that comprise the scope of language. From the Book of Motion, I decided to study falling and how a particular object fell in space. From the Primer of Small Stars and the Bestiary of Past, Present, and Future Animals I decided to study the interconnection of evolution and transformation to discover how they related to one another. From the Book of Mirrors, I decided to study the juxtaposition of materiality, based on the idea of a mirror’s material qualities versus its reflective qualities.

CONCEPT STATEMENT:
Origin of Language
Tracking Falling
Because Language was derived from a common human need to communicate, I decided that I wanted to create a three dimensional representation of that. The various facets of the construct are meant to represent the many languages and dialects spoken throughout the world. Additionally, the ascension is meant to represent the revolution of language from a mere form of communication in its early days, to an art form, as it is now.
In order to track how an object falls in a space, I decided to take a roof/ceiling tile within a space, and videotape how it fell in slow motion. I decided to incorporate how different pieces would look if dropped from different angles.

CONCEPT STATEMENT:
Evolution and Transformation
Juxtaposition of Materiality
Because evolution occurs at such a microscopic scale, and its effects are really only noticed after large amounts of time have passed, I wanted to focus on studying the small changes which can lead to the creation of something new. I achieved these small changes through increasing the manipulation of the surfaces through scoring, where the further back a plane is, the more scored it becomes. The furthest wall of the model combines the coalesced pieces to create something new.
Because mirrors are such thin objects, yet they reflect depths much greater than their own, I wanted to study how various materials can react to one another, and how varying thicknesses of material can coexist together in one space. In order to achieve this, I used monolithic solids surrounded by thin planes that react to the solid pieces.
Project 3 - Theatrical Space Design EXPERIENTIAL SEQUENCING: A person coming through this space would enter through the Origin of Language concept, which serves as a lobby space, and is also the vertical circulation in the space. At the midpoint of this vertical circulation, a person could choose to either continue up to the third floor, or to go down to the ground level. Should the person choose to continue to the third floor, they would then enter into the Juxtaposition of Materiality concept, which serves as a transitional space, and then into the theater space. Should the person choose to go to the ground floor, they would enter into the Tracking Falling concept, which serves as the bar and restaurant space. From there, the person would enter into the gallery space, created by the Evolution and Transformation concept.

FALLING CONCEPT DETAIL: The falling pieces break away from the ceiling to reveal the structure of the building underneath.
SURFACE STUDY: The material that I chose for my surface study was black granite, which is intended to be used in the gallery space. My intention is for this material to be scored.
Project 3 - Theatrical Space Design
PLAN 1: -Gallery: Evolution + Transformation -Bar + Lounge: Falling -Lobby + Vertical Circulation: Origin of Language
CONCEPTUAL DESCRIPTION: Upon entering through the Origin of Language a person would experience ascention through the space. As they travel through the area, they will become more enclosed, giving a sense of leaving behind what you have already been through and traveling into something new. A person could then go back to the main floor, and enter into Falling by first going through the stair case, where the steps are symbolic of the motion of falling, then, when entering into the Bar + Lounge area, the ceiling begins to break away, and it appears as if the pieces are falling from the ceiling, exposing the structure underneath. Finally, they would enter into the gallery where Evolution + Transformation is experienced through a continual increasing in the manipulation of the surfaces, and a gradual convergence of the surfaces.
PLAN 2: -Theater space : Left open for future development -Transitional Space: Juxtaposition of Materiality
CONCEPTUAL DESCRIPTION: A person would experience the Juxtaposition of Materiality because there will be heavy masses which create reactions from the thinner planes around it. Additionally, the color of the masses versus the planes would facilitate the juxtaposing of the two elements.
