Our approach to partnership work is to make a measurable change to our own organisation, our own pupils and our own teachers and to support those that we work with to make the changes they deem necessary to improve the outcomes of their own pupils. We want our pupils to leave this school understanding the impact that meaningful and purposeful community action can make on the world around them. I am strongly of the view that we need to lead by example. Wider Circles captures both the purpose and impact of some of the partnership work that we engage in, the fun and enjoyment of working on these projects and also the personal development that these activities have on our pupils and our staff. Our strong sense of community and responsibility towards each other extends well beyond the School’s boundaries with a shared commitment amongst staff and pupils to play our part in the world and learn from the experience. Pupils are actively involved in supporting local, regional and global initiatives through volunteering, charity work and collaborative projects. Teaching: Caterham School pupils and staff in local schools

Each year over 80 Caterham pupils have acted as classroom assistants at St John’s Primary School 70 L6 pupils arrange weekly games activities and annual sports days for pupils of Clifton Hill SPLD School Maths and English enrichment lessons for local primary school pupils
Groups of 10–12 Sixth Formers visit St John’s primary in Caterham to assist with Maths and English lessons on a weekly basis in the Spring and Summer terms. The sixth formers have proved their worth and are popular amongst pupils and staff, whilst learning from the experience. Pupils from Clifton Hill School (a Surrey school for young people with severe and profound learning difficulties and autism) come to our Sports Hall every Friday to participate in sporting activities and games planned and carried out by our Lower Sixth pupils. In the summer term our pupils organise the Clifton Hill sports day here at Caterham.
Caterham teachers have delivered programmes of English and Maths lessons for pupils of St John’s Primary. Different groups of pupils have come to Caterham School, and our teachers have travelled to St John’s to offer sessions designed to augment the curriculum and inspire a love of investigation and learning. All the students were able to participate at a level appropriate to their abilities. The range of activities planned and the pace of the day was perfect. Deputy Head, Clifton Hill School

Drama: Caterham School Department events are organised with partner schools and the community
Caterham L6 pupils run a weekly Drama club for 20 Primary School pupils (St Johns) at Caterham School. Each program ends with a performance for parents and staff. Teachers and parents have reported tangible development in confidence and presentation amongst those pupils attending.
The confidence of a number of them has significantly improved. This is evident in the sessions and around the school at St Johns. Teacher, St John’s Primary School
The Caterham Drama department hosted pupils from Clifton Hill School (Severe Learning Difficulties and Autism SLDA) and residents of Ormesby House to the Deayton Theatre for a matinee of The Girl Who Fell in Love With the Moon, performed by The Human Zoo, our resident ArtHouse theatre company. ArtHouse events involve professional companies performing in our Performing Arts centre for the general public.

Local primary schools compete in the Premier League Stars tournament at Caterham School. Music: Caterham School music department organising and participating in community events The ‘Eric Thurman Singers’ perform annually in the Epsom Charity Music Festival Annual community concerts at St John the Evangelist in Caterham, and St James’ Church in Piccadilly, and carol singing in Caterham raising money for local charities
The annual concert at St James’ Piccadilly involves over 100 Caterham Pupils. The event raises over £2,000 for school partner charities. Pupils from 20 schools across the sector participated in the orchestra day which is organised and run by the music department every March.

Local Volunteering: The Community provides opportunities for Lower and Upper School pupils Fourth year pupils all start the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, which includes volunteering in the community. Volunteering activities vary from working in charity shops, sports coaching and visiting the elderly. A group of first years go down to the Prep School on a Tuesday lunch, meet up with the Year 3’s and take them down to Pre Prep for lunch where they eat together and chat. Each first year has a little group of Year 3’s that they are linked with. Once they’ve finished they go back up to Prep and have a play, with the Year 3’s often wiping the floor with the first years at hide and seek, whilst the football skills have been a hit on the courts! 09

East London Partnerships United Access Programme
Community Day: We have established this annual day for our Lower Sixth and Year 5s from local primary schools The morning is spent with small groups engaging in range of activities from Maths, Science and Philosophy to Drama, Dance and rocket making. The afternoon includes a range of games activities on Beeches and the Astro.
The kids really enjoyed it. The teacher in my group said that they never usually experience those sorts of activities. It was great how we got to lead the sessions! I really enjoyed the community feel, and I had so much fun! Pupil, Caterham School

Five Years Partnership with the LAE – an ‘outstanding’ Free School in Newham Exchange visits for 190 Caterham pupils Over 40 Caterham pupils have conducted work experience at Kingsford Community School, and North Beckton Primary School Over 200 hours of teacher secondment, supporting MFL at the LAE
Every September our Lower Sixth hosts the 40-50 new members of Caterham House, London Academy of Excellence. The visiting pupils join in lessons and take part in a range of sociable activities including Wildcats, a quiz and a ‘mini hike’ to Viewpoint. The return visit takes place in February. 50 Caterham pupils team up with the ‘Caterham House’ Pupils to discuss such weighty issues as ‘independent/state school partnerships’ and ‘improving social mobility’. This framework allowed the participating pupils to get to know, understand and respect each other. The conclusion is that the similarities were greater than differences.
I felt lucky to spend the majority of my time up in science, where my passion for learning belongs. It has been wonderful to aid the children in their various projects and watch them present to their class, which understandably is a challenging experience for many pupils. Pupil, Caterham School
A participating pupil commented: “I learnt how much, on a personal basis, we have in common with the students and how easy it was to just chat even though we live in different areas and have a different education it was still so natural to have a calm talk. It taught me that I should be more thankful for my education and the area I’ve been brought up in and how crucial education and work is in life.” For the past four years 10 of our L6 pupils have spent a week working at Kingsford Community School in Beckton at the beginning of our summer holiday. This is an annual programme as part of the ‘Young Philanthropist’ scheme. Our pupils fulfil a wide range of activities including assisting with academic lessons, drama and educational visits.
It was so worthwhile seeing a different perspective of learning, and I feel that I have gained a lot from the experience. Pupil, Caterham School

United Access Programme Martina Montecchiarini, United Learning’s Project Lead for the programme, said: “United Access is designed to give students from across United Learning the experience, confidence, challenge and support to fulfil their academic potential and access the universities of their choice. In particular, it is focused on helping those young people who would be the first generation in their families to go to university or who come from low-income backgrounds. This first residential was a chance not only for students to explore

new, challenging and broader topics, but for them to meet with peers from other schools and learn from the experiences of their graduate mentors. Ceri Jones, Headmaster at Caterham School and co-founder of the Accelerate and Access Foundation (AAF), said: “This is a truly life changing programme – there is nothing else like this in the UK where independent and maintained schools, universities, under-graduates and other third sector organisations work
together to support pupils for four years on a mentoring and residential programme. It demonstrates the transformative power of education and partnership and has tangible benefits for all participants – principally the pupils but also the schools, teachers and other organisations involved in delivery.”

International Partnerships
Global Circles International Partnerships Lerang’ wa School Charity Fundraising
Caterham pupils expedition to Nagydobroni School on the Ukraine/ Hungary border. There were eight expeditions to Nagydobroni from 2007–2014. Funds raised at Caterham were used to support the infrastructure at the school, and our pupils contributed to teaching English In 2015 and 2016 Caterham pupils visited and worked at Casa Xalteva School in Nicaragua. Funds raised at Caterham supported a pupil of Casa Xalteva to attend university.
Between 2012 and 2014, Caterham formed a partnership with Kunbardi School in Southern India. Three expeditions have taken place to date, and funds raised at Caterham were used to help. In 2018 16 L6 pupils made the trip to Morocco in the first step at establishing a new partnership. Our pupils taught a range of lessons to enrich the curriculum at the community education centre at the Berber village of Ikhf n Ighir, in the Bougumez Valley. The team also decorated the Women’s cooperative.
In the last 10 years, Caterham School has formed links, and our pupils have visited schools in India, Nicaragua, Ukraine and Romania All of these project have involved a partnerships with fundraising for infrastructure and sponsorship at Caterham, combined with expeditions to the locations for teaching and cultural exchange. A new link has been formed with a community education centre in Morocco Top: Ikhf n Ighir, Morocco Bottom: Kunbardi School, India

Lerang’ wa School, Tanzania Caterham School and Lerang’ wa school have had a formal partnership since 2007 with annual expeditions by our Lower Sixth Formers. These visits involve Caterham pupils delivering a weeks worth of lessons and activities at the school, with input from Caterham teachers, to as high a professional standard as they can. Our pupils have learnt so much in the process, not least about themselves.

Funds raised at Caterham School have all gone to help the children of Lerang’ wa. Improvements have been made to the school infrastructure; toilets, washing, cooking – along with Lerang’ wa Lunches: daily meals for each pupil funded by
money raised at Caterham School, to replace the WFP aid that stopped in 2011. These measures have improved health and attendance at the school, and so impacted directly on educational outcomes at Lerang’ wa. It is rare for partnerships like this to last so long. This is testament to the individuals that have made it work, and the mutual benefit to the schools involved. The project has allowed scores of young people on both sides to see beyond their own horizons, learn to trust, enjoy and form bonds that will influence their world view forever.
My trip to Lerang’ wa was by far the most meaningful experience of my life so far. Experiencing a different culture through working at the school has taught me so much. Pupil, Caterham School

Inclusion and access have always been part of our mission. The School would not exist without the generosity of its first benefactors and their shared vision that all children should be able to reach their potential. Opening our doors to talented boys and girls regardless of their financial circumstance is as important today as it has ever been.
First and second years hold an annual Christmas Fair that raises over £1,500. A display of enthusiasm, ingenuity and entrepreneurship for good causes.
With the help of the School’s Bursary Fund we offer a number of means-tested bursaries to children each year, providing a partial or complete reduction in fees. Most children who come to Caterham School on a bursary place are from towns and communities surrounding Caterham. In addition a small number of bursary places are offered to children from elsewhere, including some Sixth Form boarding places for young people living in central London.
The annual Charity Talent Show is a Sixth Form organised event, involving performers from every year of the school community. Over 100 pupils participate and the event raises over £3,000.
