“I am incredibly proud of each and every one of our class of 2021 and thrilled at the successful progression of our pupils to the next exciting stage of their lives in exceptional circumstances. Their whole world was turned upside down eighteen months ago and they have shown great fortitude in ensuring that COVID-19 has not defined them. They are part of the can do and will do generation, and they deserve our praise and admiration.” Ceri Jones, Headmaster
RESULTS OPEN DOORS FOR CLASS OF 2021 Huge congratulations to the Class of 2021 as A Level results envelopes opened doors to places at Oxford and Cambridge, to medical school and a vast range of universities and destinations. 99 per cent of Caterham pupils secured a place at their university of choice, and 90 per cent secured their first choice course and university. 2021’s results saw all pupils with offers for medical school, for Oxford and Cambridge Universities and degree apprenticeships with top global firms secure their places. Over half of all grades confirmed and awarded by the exam boards today were at the top A* grade with 83 per cent of all grades awarded either A* or A grade. The Headmaster, Ceri Jones, said: “These results are a huge achievement from our young people who have proven themselves resilient, optimistic and capable through the significant challenges of the pandemic. They have done exceptionally well across a Sixth Form experience which switched between virtual and physical schooling, but which saw the school community adapt quickly and thrive. Our pupils are leaving with fantastic grades and a skillset for life as problem solvers, digitally confident young people ready to step forward. They have learned so much more than academic content over the past year and I am confident they will go on to achieve great things in the future. ” “Thanks are also due to our hardworking and inspiring team of teachers here who showed great innovation and determination through virtual school, through assessments and as they continued to teach and prepare our Sixth form students for university study right to the end of the Summer Term.”
TOP APPRENTICESHIP PLACES SECURED Three Sixth Form leavers have now secured their places on highly competitive degree apprenticeships with leading global firms Deloitte, Grant Thornton and BDO. Degree apprenticeships are rapidly growing in popularity with each place attracting thousands of applicants globally. This is a huge achievement for Husayn, Gareth and Scott, and for the Careers and Sixth Form team who supported them through the rigorous application process which began in autumn 2020. In addition to support from the Careers Department Husayn utilised the CaterhamConnected app to research and gain mentoring from Old Cats and parents in his chosen sector before securing his place. Headmaster Ceri Jones said: “This is a fantastic achievement and follows an arduous application process completed by our pupils online. As the professional world changes rapidly it is vital that we support pupils to pursue their ambitions and the career route that is right for them. Degree apprenticeships increasingly have many advantages and I am proud of our track record in successfully preparing our young people for this valuable option.” This year’s success follows Caterhamians securing degree apprenticeship places with BP and EY in recent years.

BRILLIANT SHREYA’S OFF TO CAMBRIDGE
SKY’S THE LIMIT FOR NATALIA
HITTING THE RIGHT NOTE
Shreya has always been an academic all-rounder but credits her English teacher, Ms Wildsmith, with encouraging her to read the subject at university. Now, the happy end to the tale is that Shreya will complete her degree at Magdalene College, Cambridge – which is where Ms Wildsmith studied, too! “The English Department at Caterham has been so wonderful,” says Shreya. “I have loved Literary Society and co-editing the Arts & Humanities Magazine.” But Shreya, who received A* grades in all three of her A Levels – English, French and Latin – says that all her teachers have been amazing. She adds: “Two pieces of advice I would pass on to future students are to be organised so you keep on top of your work, and to ask for help if you need it!”
Academic high-flyer Natalia is set for a career in investment banking having secured a place at Munich Business School to study Finance. “I would like to thank my tutor, Mr Crombie, who supported me through my A Levels and who was always there for me from the moment I arrived at Caterham. And I would like to give a huge thank you to all my teachers who saw my potential, never doubted me and pushed me higher.” Natalia counts the school’s Celebration Evening at the end of Upper Sixth as one of her most precious memories of Caterham: “It was spent with all kinds of wonderful Caterhamians: staff, teachers and friends!” Natalia achieved an A* in Economics, an A* in German and A in Maths.
Aldi joined Caterham as a boarder in Year 9 and describes her five years at the School as “a wonderful mix of experiences.” A talented soprano, Aldi will be completing a 4-year BA (Hons) degree in Music at The Guildhall in London; however, she is considering following this with a post-grad degree in English and Philosophy. “Thank you so much to everyone at Caterham,” says Aldi. “The Music Department has been so supportive, including my singing teacher, Miss Duguid. My tutor and English teacher, Ms Wildsmith, has been amazing, and of course I have to mention my brilliant housemistress, Mrs Quinton.”
FULL HOUSE FOR AVA AND BLANCHE
CASPAR’S ON THE RIGHT TACK
MOVING UP INTO MEDICINE
Twin sisters Ava and Blanche, both of whom joined Caterham’s Sixth Form from a grammar school, have stormed their A Levels, each securing a hat-trick of A* grades across all their subjects. Blanche, who has been an active supporter of Caterham’s Charity Committee and Amnesty International group, plans to study Psychological & Behavioural Science at the London School of Economics. “Dr Avery has been an inspirational teacher of psychology and a tremendous support to me,” says Blanche, who has also won a 12-month paid internship with IBM. Meanwhile, Ava, who achieved a top grade for a piece of coursework about gaming as part of her Computer Science A Level, plans to defer her future studies by one year before deciding on her next steps. Hats off to Ava who shaved her head to raise funds for cancer charity Macmillan during the summer holidays, raising funds for a brilliant charity!
Many congratulations to Caspar who is off to study a BEng degree in Marine Technology at the University of Plymouth having achieved a wonderful clutch of grades in Maths (A*), Further Maths (A), Chemistry (A*) and Physics (A*). Caspar is an accomplished sailor; he has been teaching watersports locally over the summer and sails a 29er two-person high performance dinghy. “I have always wanted to do something with boats,” says Caspar, who was impressed by the course and staff at Plymouth. “Thank you to all my teachers at Caterham, they have all made the learning process so engaging.”
Rob is set to train as a doctor by winning a place to study Medicine at Anglia Ruskin University. He has been a keen rugby player throughout his time at Caterham, rising to be hooker in the School’s 1st XV. Rob joined Caterham as a boarder in Year 9 and says the terrific staff and his close friends within the boarding community have provided a “fabulous support network.” Rob continues: “I have also felt so well supported by the Science Department. The School’s Wright Society (for aspiring medics) has been so helpful and I have benefited from attending the wide ranging seminars put on by the Moncrieff-Jones (Science) Society.”

FIFTH YEAR HIT THE HIGH NUMBERS AT GCSE
WHERE OUR STUDENTS GO ON TO STUDY
A part physical, part virtual school year culminated in stellar GCSE results for Caterham pupils with 92 per cent of all grades at 9 to 7. Half of all grades awarded were the top grade 9 and the average grade for a Caterham pupil is 8.1 (previously an A*). The superb outcomes span a broad range of subjects from Maths, English and Sciences to Astronomy, Computer Science and Textiles. Headmaster, Ceri Jones, said: “2021’s results are fantastic news for a super talented and diverse group of pupils who have shown incredible resilience and character throughout the pandemic. Not only have they applied themselves to their academic study but also continued to engage fully in the wider life of the school – both virtual and physical – across co-curricular clubs, performing arts, sport and our partnership programme. They have risen to every challenge and learned so much more than academic content alone. I cannot wait to see what they achieve next as they progress into Sixth Form life here at Caterham.” “From the very beginning of the pandemic we moved quickly to ensure every aspect of our pupils’ schooling was supported. Our pupils are now more than ready to get the very most out of Sixth Form study and school life with a superb set of GCSE results secured.”

A key focus throughout the pandemic was ensuring our young people’s futures were not affected by the many, and often rapid, changes to their routine. This year’s set of university destinations is testament to a mission accomplished with places secured on highly sought-after courses and at competitive universities across the UK, and indeed the globe. All 10 of our medicine, veterinary and dentistry applicants secured their places and all those with offers from Oxford or Cambridge University will now attend up their place joining the 50+ Old Caterhamians currently studying at the world-leading institutions. Caterhamians progress to a wide range of courses across science, engineering, the arts, economics, business and management, reflecting the broad
range of interests and talents across our leavers. The range of institutions including leading universities across the UK, Europe, the US and Hong Kong. Ceri Jones, Headmaster, said: “We always prioritise supporting our young people to take the path that is right for them as they progress on from the School, whatever that be. A priority for all of us throughout the pandemic was to secure the ambitions of our pupils beyond Caterham. Our instant switch to virtual schooling in March 2020, and in subsequent lockdowns, was a key part of this success and was underpinned by our longstanding focus on blending digital and traditional learning. That almost every part of school life continued apace, whether lessons, extension activities, clubs or societies, is credit to the dedication of our teachers and the engagement of pupils and families.”
