NETBALL
Under 14s Record Wins The Under 14, Under 15, Under 16 and 1st VII all had their qualifying rounds of the Surrey Schools in the Autumn Term, with the U16 VII going through in fantastic style, remaining undefeated after five tough matches. The Under 14 VII recorded the most wins they have ever achieved at this level and despite not qualifying for the finals, they are getting closer and closer and can feel very proud of their performance on the day. The Under 15 VII and 1st VII were very unlucky not to achieve qualification, with both finishing 3rd in their section and the 1st VII missing out on goal difference alone. These teams can only feel proud of the way they represented themselves on the day. Well done to all. International Play for Seniors Other highlights from the season so far include the very successful and enjoyable U15 netball tour to Dubai; three teams of Senior, U16 and U12 players enjoying match play against touring Swiss club side Meinier; the 3rd VII being undefeated in all matches played in this first term; the 1st VII being one match away from Regional

qualification after wins against teams such as St Catherine’s, Epsom College, Reigate Grammar and Cranleigh; the U13A going goal for goal against Colfe’s and coming out eventual 22-21 winners; U12 C&D teams regularly enjoying Monday lunchtime matches against the Prep school; two impressive level ThunderCats matches; and rounding off the term the U12A beat Guildford High 10-8 in a what was a very thrilling match to watch. In total 22 teams have played 133 matches, winning a staggering 71% of these matches. Well done to all the players and we are looking forward to even more netball next term!
REPRESENTATIVE HONOURS Congratulations to Sarah Lowe (Fifth Year) and Zara Russell (Fourth Year) who have been selected for the Surrey County Netball Academy, and to Katie Hudson (Fourth Year), who has been selected for the Surrey County Development Academy. The Academy is for the best netballers in Surrey between the ages of 14 to 18 years. Jenna Sam, Joani Baker, Poppy Oliver and Julianne Gibbon (all Third Year) achieved places in the Surrey Satellite Academies, with Jenna and Joani making it in to the elite squad. Congratulations also to Georgina Blunt (Upper Sixth Form) and Olivia Tikare (Lower Sixth Form) who have once again been selected for the London and South East Regional Performance Academy (RPA). This Academy is for girls who are training at just one level below National Academy, and so to be selected is incredibly tough given the very high standard of netball in the Region. Both Georgie and Olivia were selected to represent the RPA on their recent tour to Switzerland, where they competed against the Swiss National sides.

SPORTS REVIEW SPRING 2017
LACROSSE It was a fantastic Autumn Term of lacrosse for the LaxCats. The participation in games, turnouts and lunchtime clubs has steadily increased from previous years. In fact, it is the first time in many years that Caterham have fielded three teams at U12, U13 and U14 level. Other highlights include the 1st XII competing and finishing a respective 4th place in the South Schools Tournament, where they faced the toughest competition in the South of England. The U15A team finished 2nd and the U15B finished 7th at the Surrey County tournament. Finally, the U12A’s have completed their first term of lacrosse and are the only Caterham team to remain unbeaten (they are also unbeaten in Netball).
During the Autumn Term, Caterham’s rugby teams played 177 matches and, across our 18 teams, over 300 boys represented the school. For a co-educational school of our size to put out so many teams and to have so many boys playing for a school team is a feat that few schools can match. Putting out so many sides has presented challenges - increasingly we are having to play large, single sex schools which can often be very tough, particularly for our C and D teams. However, our main goal is to get boys onto the pitch, enjoying their rugby and enjoying all of the benefits that competitive team sport brings. In addition to increasing the number of boys playing rugby, there have been some remarkable victories across the board. The U12s have had a superb season, with great victories over KCS, Wimbledon and St. John’s Leatherhead, plus a hard draw with Epsom College.
The U13C team were the only unbeaten team in the school whilst the U14s have put in a number of sterling performances as an age group; the A team putting in an excellent team display to beat a very able Sevenoaks side, and the B team putting up an incredible fight to push a talented Whitgift side to the last play. In the U15s there was an epic victory for the A side over St George’s Weybridge whilst the Bs put local rivals Reigate Grammar to the sword in style. Both U16A and B have had a great season, with perhaps the performance of the season coming against a well organised Tiffin outfit. At senior level the 2nd XV have earned victories, winning five games by one score or less, including a famous 10-7 victory over RGS. At 1st XV level there have been a number of standout performances, perhaps the best being the victory over Skinner’s that started a run of 175 minutes without conceding a try, a run that took the team to the last 16 of the NatWest Plate for the second year running.
International Rugby Old Cat Matt Foulds, Class of 2009, has been named in the Spain rugby squad for their upcoming internationals vs Tonga and Spain. Matt was 1st XV Captain to one of the School’s most successful ever 1st XVs, going unbeaten in Saturday blocks and reaching the 1/4 finals of the Daily Mail Vase.

Congratulations to the girls on this excellent achievement and continuing the strong lacrosse tradition at Caterham. Sporting highlights REPRESENTATIVE HONOURS Well done to Seb Ahmed (Third Year) who has been selected to the U14 Surrey Hockey JAC. After a successful year with the squad last year, it is great that Seb has retained his place as competition for places intensifies each year. Following in his footsteps is Tom Williamson who has been selected for the U13 South Kent Hockey JAC. Soon after this fine achievement, he also found out that he had made it through to the phase two performance assessment for Kent cricket. What a talented young man!
District Champions In November, Caterham hosted the District Swimming Gala for Intermediate and Senior aged pupils (years 10/11 & 12/13). Six schools participated in this highly competitive event, with races being settled by 100ths of a second. Caterham performed fantastically well with our Inter Boys, Senior Girls and Senior Boys all finishing in 2nd place. Congratulations to the Intermediate girls who finished in 1st place, becoming District Champions. Well done to everybody in what was an impressive night in the pool.
Well done also to Nell Jones in the Third Year who is training at the North Downs Performance Centre for England Hockey.
Back to Hockey Adults have been dusting off their sticks and digging out their shin pads to get ‘Back to Hockey’ at Caterham School. The sessions begun in October and have grown significantly since then. The group consists of members of the local community, total beginners, ex-players who have not played for many years and parents who have watched their children play and wanted to experience the game.
The sessions provide players with the opportunity to work on their basic skills and includes lots of gameplay for them to develop the skills they have learnt. The fun and informal sessions have been a big hit and the postsession refreshments give players a great chance to chat and catch up over a hot drink. Sporting highlights Ball Girl Bounces Back at ATP Finals Those watching Andy Murray win the ATP World Tour Tennis Finals at the O2 in November, may have spotted a familiar face. Georgie Young (Third Year), was a Ball Kid throughout the finals. Having sustained a broken leg last year, Georgie completed a long rehabilitation, and was successful in the trials to be one of thirty Ball Kids at the tournament. She competed in the UK trials at the National Tennis Centre, and was delighted to have been chosen. What an experience!

Top Ten Swimmers in Surrey Relay Championships On Saturday 24 September, Caterham School competed against all Surrey schools at the Surrey Relay Championships. Collectively the squad competed in eight events and all swimmers performed fantastically well with some of our swimmers achieving new personal bests. Our Junior Girls started the event off with the 4x50m Freestyle relay, achieving an 8th place finish out of 20 teams, and an impressive time of 2.13.58. Our Junior Boys equally impressed with a time of 2.19.26, achieving a 10th place finish, with some of our boys competing in their first
ever gala. Our intermediate boys performed well in their 4x50m Freestyle relay finishing in 10th place. The Intermediate Girls relay team performed an impressive Freestyle relay, and just missing out on a medal coming 4th place overall in a time of 1.59.43.
Olympic Competition for Amy Congratulations to Amy Davies who swam at the ASA National Winter Meet. She performed superbly, completing the 100m Freestyle in 59.04! It was a great experience for her competing with Olympic swimmers.
Table Tennis and Junior Badminton Table Tennis Club and Junior Badminton Club continue to go from strength to strength. These recreational lunchtime club allows pupils to relax, unwind and chat to their friends, all over a friendly game of table tennis or badminton Whilst these are non-competitive clubs, there are still some dazzling skills on display!
Cross Country District Success The growing strength of cross country at Caterham was evident at the District Cross Country Championships in November. After some superb running, eleven Caterham pupils were selected to represent the District, having all finished in the top ten in their races.
Sessions run on Monday morning 8.45am – 9.45am and Monday evening 6.00pm – 7.00pm. Refreshments provided for morning session only.
Strength and Conditioning Under the tuition of the School’s strength and conditioning coach, Mr Taylor, many pupils are making great strides in improving their physical capabilities. Whether it be at the before school conditioning sessions or during the lunch break in the performance gym, pupils are being taught the correct technique for all of the major functional movements that will improve strength, speed and power.
Ollie Gray Competes in Karting World Finals Ollie Gray (First Year), who joined Caterham this year, is a kart racer competing in the British Super1 Championships and the BirelArt/ EasyKart National Championship. In just his second year of racing, Ollie won the BirelArt/EasyKart UK National Championships – his prize was to compete in the 2016 World Finals in Castelletto, Italy in the Autumn Term. The event lasted for five days and has over 200 drivers from a number of different kart classes competing. Ollie raced against 43 other drivers from around the world - in qualifying, heats, pre finals and finals. On the Sunday he lined up 16th in the A Final. In front of him were 11 Italian, 2 Chilean, 1 Czech and 1 Russian driver – all of whom had lots of race experience at the Castelletto track. After a 12 minute race Ollie finished a tremendous 9th – the highest ever position a UK cadet has finished in these world finals. Well done Ollie!
Congratulations to Grace Godfrey, Tabitha Welsh (Junior Girls), Maddy Pullen (Inter Girls), Sophie Dowie, Olivia Dowie, Caitlyn Lefevre, Eloise Bull (Senior Girls), Ben Brown, George Thomas, Ashley Best (Inter Boys) and Zach de Beer (Senior Boys).
Well done too, to all of the other runners who ran so hard in tough conditions. It was particularly pleasing to see so many junior runners competing for the school.
Maddy Pullen Triathlon and Cross Country Success It has been a busy few months for Fourth Year pupil Maddy Pullen. At the end of last year’s triathlon season, Maddy finished 2nd in the South East England league, finishing only seven points behind the eventual winner (a 14 seconds difference across six races). She also qualified and competed in the GB Triathlon Festival in Strathclyde but a mechanical failure on the bike left her placed near the back of the field. On 12 November Maddy represented Surrey Schools at the U17 Midlands Inter County Cross Country race in Birmingham and finished a fantastic 23rd in a very strong field of 60. She has been selected to race for Surrey County in the SEAA Southern Inter Counties Cross Country and we wish her the very best of luck as she continues to make great strides in the world of endurance sport.

Sporting highlights Team GB’s and Old Cat Rosie Clarke Returns In December, Old Caterhamian and Great Britain Athlete Rosie Clarke visited us for the second time this year. Rosie was back in the area in between overseas training camps as she continues to work towards next years World Championships. Now a full-time athlete specialising in the 3000m steeplechase, Rosie’s knowledge and experience made for a fascinating day. She started by leading a practical session with our GCSE pupils before heading into the classroom to explain the benefits of altitude training to our A Level pupils. Finally, Rosie spoke to all of our CAP athletes about training, setbacks and the importance of resilience if you want to make it to the top. Thank you Rosie for such an inspiring and insightful day. We will be watching and supporting you as your athletics career continues to flourish.
