SPORTSREVIEW SUMMER 2017 Issue 2
Welcome to the termly review of Sport at Caterham School...
RUGBY dazzling play of their own, and they fought back terrifically to control the rest of the first half. It was only through heroic defence from the whole side that the 1st VII took their 12 point lead into half time. In the second half Wellington again took control of possession and after some impressive play crossed the line to bring the score back to 12-5. Showing their class, the Wellington side struck quickly again to bring the score to 12-10 with only two minutes remaining.
TOP RANKING FOR CATERHAM IN RUGBY 7S CUP COMPETITION: HSBC ROSSLYN PARK NATIONAL SCHOOL’S SEVENS Caterham’s performance in the Rosslyn Park National School’s Sevens saw the School reach a top ranking of 16 of all rugby playing schools in the country, and firmly in the Cup competition, specifically aimed at the nation’s strongest rugby playing schools. The 1st VII produced the best Caterham performance at the HSBC Rosslyn Park National School’s Sevens since the school won the title in 1991. Jack Trantor became the first Caterham player to ever play at the second day of national school’s sevens twice (having been there in 2015 as well). Since the competition was restructured in 2014 to have a Cup and Vase competition, Caterham has competed in the Cup competition, aimed at the strongest 120 rugby playing schools in the nation. Caterham faced a tough draw on day one with two Academy colleges representing Exeter Chiefs (Ivybridge) and Newport Gwent Dragons (Newport High School) in their group alongside one of the strongest schools in the north of England, Queen Ethelburga’s College, and nearby rivals Hurstpierpoint College. The 1st VII were simply outstanding in this group stage, showing determination and fierce work rate in defence combined with some sublime skills and blistering pace in attack. After four games the 1st VII were

unbeaten having earned hard fought victories over each of their opponents and advanced to day two and the last 16 for only the third time in the School’s history. At the start of day two, Caterham faced Whitgift in a game to decide who would advance to the Cup or Plate. The 1st VII battled bravely but were a little slow to shake off the cobwebs from the day before and, unfortunately, went down to a tight loss. This meant the boys advanced to the semi-final pool of the Plate where they would face two more Academy colleges, this time from Bath (Beechen Cliff) and Bristol (Filton College) as well as one of the most famous names in schoolboy rugby, Wellington College. After strong performances against Beechen Cliff and Filton College, both of which were ferociously physical encounters, the 1st VII faced a winner take all shoot out with Wellington College for who would advance to the National Plate final. It was Caterham who started the game brightly, Che Ochugboju continuing his devastating form throughout the sevens season to score two wonderful tries, taking his personal tally for the tournament to an astonishing 17, taking Caterham out to a 12-0 lead. However, Wellington have not been crowned national champions on multiple occasions without showing some resilience and
The Caterham boys dug in magnificently, producing some fantastic sevens despite the undoubted fatigue (this was their 10th game in two days) and Az Sharif made a spectacular break but was caught just short of the Wellington line. From here Wellington launched their own offensive, but the Caterham boys were determined to not be beaten easily and defended as though their lives depended on it. Wellington, though, had their eyes on yet another national final and showed great composure and execution to eventually work an overlap and cross in the corner with the very last play to win the game 12-15 and seal their place in the final. Understandably the Caterham squad were devastated in the initial aftermath of the result but should look back with huge pride on what was a phenomenal effort and hugely successful sevens season. Lead Coach for Caterham’s sevens programme, Mr Alistair Taylor, said “The boys are obviously disappointed as we felt we had a real chance of going home with some silverware. But that just shows how far we have come, to not only be competing with, but beating some of the top names in schoolboy rugby is a fantastic achievement. With eight of this squad available for next year’s tournament there could be some exciting times ahead for Caterham rugby.”

RUGBY
1ST VII WIN THE SURREY PLATE Topping off what was an astonishing week of rugby, when the U16 and U14s both came top in Surrey, the Under 18s won the Surrey Plate! On Wednesday 15 March the 1st VII travelled to Richmond Athletic ground to compete in the Gullivers Sports Surrey Sevens. Unlike at other age groups the U18 tournament is an open invitational tournament and attracts the very best rugby playing sides from all over the country. The Caterham side travelled in confident mood having put in strong performances at the Reigate and Worth tournaments. In the group stage the 1st VII were given a tough draw with Millfield, Peter Symonds College and Moulton College (Northampton Saints Academy School). The boys played some excellent rugby, scoring some spectacular tries in all games. Unfortunately they were unable to overcome a strong Millfield side who put in an excellent display in what was a compelling contest.
This meant that after the group stages Caterham advanced to the Surrey plate. In the quarter finals the side put in a dominant display against Emanuel showing some devastating attacking play in the process of a 35-15 victory. In the semi-final the 1st VII showcased their defensive resilience, limiting what had been a free scoring Dulwich side to 12 points and sealing a 22-12 victory. This meant that Caterham would face John Fisher in the Plate final. In a game that was streamed live on the internet the 1st VII showed incredible desire and work ethic against a very physical John Fisher side. The boys worked tirelessly for each other, defying the exhausting heat of the day and the fact that this was their seventh game. Throughout the first half the game was evenly poised and at half-time the score was 7-5 to Caterham, following an excellent try from Will Driscoll. In the second half the 1st VII really took control of the game, Che Ochugboju scoring a scintillating hat-trick of tries in a devastating period to take the game away from John Fisher and take his personal tally of tries for the day to an impressive 12. This really was a complete team performance with the entire squad contributing in every facet of the game, exemplified by a superb team try that was finished off by Josh Fatoye. As the final whistle blew the final score was 29-12 to Caterham, an emphatic victory over a very strong John Fisher side. This was an incredible achievement for the 1st VII squad and saw them head into the HSBC National Schools Sevens with confidence.
CATERHAM U16 WIN SURREY PLATE IN UNBEATEN DAY AT SURREY 7S Caterham’s Under 16 Rugby team were placed the top co-educational school at the Surrey 7s tournament after winning the Plate. The Caterham boys succeeded the whole day unbeaten, winning every game bar one group game which they drew 12-12 with KCS Wimbledon. The boys were unlucky to miss out on a Cup semi-final but finished second in the group to KCS Wimbledon on points difference, the teams only separated by one point. The boys then made light work of Wimbledon College in their semi-final before beating St John’s Leatherhead in the final 28-26 to finish as the top co-ed school in the county.

UNDER 14S RUGBY ALSO PLACED TOP CO-ED IN SURREY Hot on the heels of the Under 16s’ earlier success, Caterham’s Under 14s produced a fantastic performance at their own County Sevens Tournament. After a tough group, which saw three emphatic wins and two narrow two point losses to strong sides from Trinity and Tiffin, the U14s finished 3rd in their group and advanced to the Bowl. After a very strong win in the semi-final the boys faced an extremely physical Glyn side who had easily beaten a strong John Fisher side in their own semi. It was a tense and bruising encounter with no quarter asked or given by any player on either side. After some ferocious work at the breakdown Caterham scored an excellent try to take a 5-0 lead into half time. The second half was tense with tired bodies on both sides, Caterham showed superb resilience to repel wave after wave of Glyn attacks. As the game moved into the last play Glyn were on the attack when Caterham grabbed an interception and broke away to score under the posts to seal a 12-0 victory. This win saw the U14s finish 9th overall in Surrey, one of the strongest rugby-playing counties in the country. The boys also finished the day as the highest performing Surrey co-educational school, matching the achievement of the U16s the previous day who had won the Plate and finished 5th overall in their own tournament.
Mr Dan Richards, Caterham’s Head of Rugby, said: “The boys worked phenomenally hard during coaching and this is a great reward for all their efforts. We were absolutely thrilled to end the day as the highest placed co-educational school at the tournament, finishing 5th overall.”
SPORTS REVIEW SUMMER 2017
RUGBY MORE RUGBY 7S SUCCESS! In early March the 1st VII headed to Hartswood for the annual Charity 7s. The event brings together 32 of the top rugby-playing schools in the country and is a key tournament in the build up to National Schools Sevens at Rosslyn Park. The boys faced a tough draw with Cranbrook, Trinity and Reigate in their pool. The 1st VII started well with a comfortable 26-5 victory over Cranbrook. The next pool game was a tense affair against a very talented Trinity side. The game was evenly poised throughout with both sides showing real quality and determination. It was the Caterham side that emerged victorious with some brave defending helping them to defend a two point lead for most of the second half and claim a famous 12-10 victory. The final group game saw Caterham take on a very strong Reigate team. The Caterham side had only had 15 minutes rest before the game and this told somewhat as, despite brave resistance and fierce commitment, the Reigate side claimed a 17-7 win. That meant that Caterham finished 2nd in the group and would go on to the Plate competition. In the quarter final the 1st VII played Hurstpierpoint in a dress rehearsal for a group game at nationals. Caterham, having now recovered, were superb in this game, scoring six tries in an emphatic win. In the semi-final the boys played a combative Wimbledon College side who
GIRLS RUGBY AT NATIONAL SEVENS At the end of the Spring Term, the first ever Caterham School girls’ team took part in the National School 7s. Playing a few pitches along from the successful senior boys’ team, the girls were clearly inspired by their male peers as they played some superb rugby. The Caterham girls were entirely new to rugby this term and have made amazing strides in the game in a very short space of time. The first game of the tournament saw them face one of the tournament favourites, Sir Thomas Picton School, Wales. The Welsh girls were clearly very experienced but Caterham put up an excellent fight in their 7-32 defeat. Sir Thomas Picton went all the way to the semi-finals so that is an indication of their strength and just how well Caterham did against them. Next up was Perins School,
had comfortably beaten John Fisher in their own quarter final. On a smaller pitch and in increasingly tough conditions the game was a real battle with no quarter asked or given. Once again, the Caterham side rose to the challenge and were good value for their 19-5 win which saw them through to the final where they faced Wallington GS who were on a high having themselves defeated Whitgift in the other semi-final. The final was a tense affair and the Caterham 1st VII started slowly, fatigue perhaps now becoming a factor after a long day playing in horrendous conditions. Showing unusual hesitancy in defence the boys slipped to a 12-0 deficit with most of the first half gone. It was at this point that the group showed their incredible resilience and work ethic, working tremendously hard to craft a try scoring opportunity that saw them go in to half time 12-5 down. The second half was a different story; Caterham looked full of energy and determined to give their all. They simply dominated possession and territory and it is credit to the quality of the Wallington Grammar side that they restricted Caterham to two scores during a half of complete dominance. When the final whistle eventually came the score was 12-19 to Caterham and the boys had won the plate. It was a thoroughly deserved achievement after the incredibly hard work that the boys have put in to prepare for the Sevens season.
another tournament favourite. Perins lost to Sir Thomas Picton 5-10 so it was another stern test but, once again, the Caterham girls gave it everything and showed incredible bravery in a 0-27 defeat. Alice Medlock suffered a broken nose in the match but didn’t let the injury dampen her spirits at all – she was an absolute trooper and inspired the girls to a superb victory in their last match. This last match was against St John’s, Leatherhead and it was one way traffic in favour of Caterham. The girls put into practice everything that they have learned and scored some fantastic tries. The final score was 38-5 and such a comprehensive victory was just reward for all of the girls’ fantastic efforts. To cap it off, Olivia Tikare was approached by an England scout after the game and was invited to trials. All after just three months of rugby! Mr Rob Clarke, Director of Sport’, said:
INAUGURAL TOURNAMENT FOR GIRLS’ RUGBY The girls’ rugby team took part in their first ever tournament, in some pretty atrocious weather conditions, at Reigate Grammar School. The girls didn’t let the wet weather and mud dampen their enthusiasm. It was wonderful to see the girls competing at the same event as the boys, with the two squads cheering each other on. The first match was against Wisbech Grammar School and Caterham ran out 20-10 winners. Alice Medlock and Jess Fatoye ran with pace and power to break through the Wisbech defence and to set up some outstanding tries. The other group games against Oundle and RGS saw the girls face more experienced teams and our opponents extra nous at the breakdown meant that we were starved somewhat of possession. But the girls absolutely tackled their hearts out showing tremendous aggression and courage. Phoebe Wearing’s outstanding try against RGS also needs a mention, as well as her yellow card! After a long break for lunch the girls faced King Henry VII and, in a tight game, it was our opponents who managed to take their opportunities to take the win. But the girls left happy and eager to improve ready for the National Tournament at the end of the month.
“This group of girls has got the best team spirit that I have ever seen and it has been an absolute pleasure to coach them. Well done girls. I am very proud of you. Roll on next year.”

HOCKEY ST GEORGE’S SIXES In February a small, select squad from our 1st XI hockey team travelled to St George’s College Weybridge to take part in the St George’s sixes hockey tournament. This prestigious event, attended by 28 of the South’s top independent schools, gives the chance for the players to experience the fast and furious world of six-a-side hockey. With games six minutes each way there was no time for easing in to the contest and goals were at a premium throughout the day. The Caterham boys first faced hosts St George’s and after dominating the game St George’s nicked the points right at the death with a drag flick via a deflection from our defender, sending fogging the wrong way.
It was a disappointing start but the boys picked themselves up and put in some excellent performances, most notably a draw against rivals Trinity and wins against Seaford College and Hurstpierpoint, avenging losses earlier in the season in the process.
A thank you and special mention goes to Mr Quinton who not only chauffeured us to the tournament but was selected to umpire a semi-final game. Congratulations Mr Quinton and thank you.
The day unfortunately ended at the group stages with the boys narrowly missing out on qualification to the knockout stages. An excellent performance from all players but particularly Jack Trantor rounding the Hurst goalkeeper to score a lovely goal and, as always, Joe Foggin rock solid in goal.
HOCKEY TOUR TO HOLLAND Over February half term, a group of 16 hockey players gathered at Gatwick airport for our hockey tour bound for Noordwijk, Holland. The tour was led by Mr Schenk, Mr Friend, Mr Taylor and Mr Clarke. With the presence of Mr Taylor, there was inevitably going to be some muscle aching fitness sessions and before we knew it the group was training hard, with music playing, on the foggy beach next to our accommodation. This was followed in the evening by a group classroom session and one-on-ones with our coaches to develop players’ individual knowledge. We spent the whole of Friday at Alecto Hockey club, Mr Schenk’s former club, training for our all-important evening game. The extended preparation proved essential, with a two hour morning hockey session and a two and a half hour afternoon session we touched upon all of the areas which needed to be covered to get us ready for the big game. Throughout the day we learned each other’s playing styles which was essential as this was the first time the group had played together. That evening we were facing Alecto’s U14 A team, the best in their league. The game began as a very cagey affair with most of the play in the midfield area; however, Alecto gradually gained control and they pushed us to our limits. I was lucky enough to be leading the team and I’m sure my
caterhamschoolsport.com
teammates will agree that the effort we put in to this game was inspirational. Each and every one of us put in 100 per cent, from cheering our buzzword to keep our heads up to scoring two textbook goals (Hamish Cunningham & Isaac Salem). A barrage of penalty corners and the constant battle of defending our D was a real test of our resolve. There were positives for Caterham though. A great save on the line from George Thomas stopped a certain goal and the occasional chance we had to attack proved to be successful. The final score was 7-2 to Alecto and although a disappointing result, a huge amount of belief could be taken from the game. Our goal keeper and Man of the Match, Dominic Wells, performed outstandingly and received compliments from the opposing teams’ coach regarding his performance. Saturday morning brought a new challenge where we faced local team Noordwijk hockey club. It was a slow start to the game as our energy levels took time to rise but after a long first half of turnover after turnover and countless penetrations into their D, the score remained at 0-0. Mr Schenk’s typically inspirational half time words of wisdom worked, with three goals scored in the second half (Hamish Cunningham x2, Alan Blay) and some outstanding defence by Man of the Match Shayaan Khan. After a very tiring first two days and an
early start for this match, a win of 3-2 was very much deserved. The hard work was not finished yet as Mr Taylor still managed to squeeze in another beach fitness session but this time it consisted of a recovery run, a recovery swim in the North Sea and a great game of beach football in the sun. We finished off the day watching a movie and going bowling which was just what some needed. A solid bowling performance all around with the exception of Freddie Knox, Matt Wilmott and Shayaan Khan who couldn’t seem to muster the energy to throw the bowling ball straight. On the final day, to top off the tour, we had lunch at a traditional pancake house and Mr Schenk kindly led us on a thoroughly entertaining tour around Amsterdam. Many thanks to Mr Schenk, Mr Friend, Mr Taylor and Mr Clark for organising the tour and I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
SPORTS REVIEW SUMMER 2017
NETBALL Caterham’s netball girls have had a magnificent end to the term including some top local wins, runners up at the Surrey Finals final and many excellent performances serving as a fantastic reflection of the hard work the girls have put in all season long. Some of the highlights include wins for the 1st VII in goal-for-goal games against both Reigate Grammar (19-16) and Sevenoaks (27-22); the 4th VII beating the Ardingly 3rd VII by over ten goals; the U16 VII putting in a fantastic performance in the Surrey Finals with wins against St Catherine’s and Surbiton; the U16B VII earning a 12-10 in a very hard-fought win against Notre Dame, Cobham; the U15 A, B and C VII achieving a clean sweep of victories against Ardingly; the U14A VII pushing Reigate Grammar very close in the recent fixture, having shown so much improvement of late, whilst the U14 B&C VII performed magnificently to earn a win and a narrow loss to the RAAS A and B teams; the U13 A, B and C VII achieving two wins and a draw against three very competitive sides from Christ’s Hospital; the U13A VIIs very commanding win against Reigate Grammar (30-19) also deserves a mention here; and then last
but definitely not least, the U12A VII ending in the season with 14 wins from 14 matches – an amazing achievement – and the U12 A, B and C VII achieving a clean sweep of their own against Christ’s Hospital. In terms of tournament play, it is the 2nd VII that have been our greatest success story of the season. In late March the girls travelled to St Catherine’s to compete in the Surrey Finals, which traditionally is always one of the highlights of the season and a date that is always much anticipated by players and their coaches alike. It is no exaggeration to say that the whole squad was absolutely on fire and had picked the exact right day of the season to hit their peak! The wins just kept on coming, with the girls recording some exceptional score-lines against some very good opposition. The girls were undefeated in the group stages and so progressed into
the Cup quarter-final, where they faced Claremont. They won this with relative ease, and so they then faced St Catherine’s in the semi-final, where at half-time they found themselves 2-3 down. The girls showed immense character by staying calm under huge home crowd pressure and strong opposition play to go on and win the match 8-5. In the final they were matched up against Guildford High and unfortunately they were unable to extend their unbeaten run, losing the game 5-10. However nothing could stop these girls from realising just what they had achieved that day – they had truly excelled under the pressure of tournament play, and every single member of the 10 NetCat Squad contributed magnificently. Huge congratulations to this fantastic squad of players.

LACROSSE SEMI FINAL FINISH AND TOP 5 LISTING FOR CATERHAM LACROSSE GIRLS front of the goal, and a beautiful finish from Lottie, secured a spot in the semifinals for Caterham. Caterham saw the eventual winners in the semi-final, St Catherine’s, who defeated Caterham 2-0 to advance to the finals. A top 4 finish in the Nation is the best this age group has ever done at National Schools and a great end to the season! The fourth day of the National School Tournament proved to be another great day of competition and the U14A and U13A came out fighting. After clawing through an extremely even section, the U14A team moved into the knock out rounds where they faced Guildford High School in the Final 16. In a furiously paced match, Caterham created so many scoring opportunities however, were never able to find the back of the net. Guildford, the eventual National Champions, defeated Caterham 2-0 after a valiant fight. Finishing top 16 in the Nation for the second year in a row is a fantastic achievement for the U14A squad. The 1st XII started off the tournament season at National Schools. On the first day of competition, the girls flew through their group outscoring their opponents 47-2, to finish top in their section and head to the Championship bracket the next day. In the round of 16, Caterham faced a strong Bedford team but completely dominated them with a score of 4-1. This win sent them through to the quarter finals against Guildford High School. A narrow loss of 3-2 meant GHS would progress to the semi-final. While the outcome of the game was not in Caterham’s favour, the girls left it all out on the pitch. The play and team spirit by the 1st XII was remarkable the entire weekend. This was truly a team effort with outstanding leadership on display by the Upper Sixth, relentless effort by the Lower Sixth and the courage and bravery by the Fifth Year. A top 8 finish in the nation is a fantastic achievement for Caterham Lacrosse! The 2nd XII also had a remarkable National Schools Tournament, finishing in the top six in the nation. It was quite an intense morning for the 2nd XII, as they played eight games in the section, facing many large all girls’ schools. The 2nd XII defeated the strong sides of Wycombe Abbey, St Mary’s Calne, Godolphin,

Queen Anne’s Caversham, St George’s Harpenden and Heathfield School. With the new format of the 2nd XII tournament, the girls needed to finish top two in their group and unfortunately narrowly missed out and finished third. This meant they did not advance to the semi-final however, the team played beautifully and were very supportive throughout the tournament. The outstanding leadership of the Upper Sixth in addition to the relentless effort contributed to the amazing success of the team. The U15A’s had an unbelievable day at their final National Schools Tournament as an age group. A close, 2-1, win against St Pauls secured the top seed in their section heading into the knockout rounds. The round of 16 saw a strong Wycombe Abbey side, a team that had beaten Caterham earlier in November. However, the Cats did not let this phase them and they advanced to the quarter finals against Putney High School. A week earlier, the same Putney High School team had comfortably beaten the U15A Caterham side, so the girls were ready for revenge. It was a back and forth game that ended with a 2-2 draw sending them to golden goal overtime. Zara Russell picked up the most crucial draw control to secure possession, passed it up to Cat Lewis-Orr who drew a shooting space. A quick feed from Cat to Lottie McDonald, directly in
The U13s had a great experience at their first National Schools Tournament. The U13As battled against six strong teams in the section matches. The girls had a very tough schedule and finished with some very close results. The girls defeated Haberdasher Monmouth, Haileybury and The Royal School however this was not enough to send them through the knockout rounds. The girls are already looking forward to improving their result next year! On the fifth and final day of the National Schools Tournament, the 3rd XII took the pitch on a gorgeous spring day at St Catherine’s, Bramley. The standard of this tournament has massively improved in the past year, and the level of play from our 3rd XII team was extremely commendable. Superb victories against Wycombe Abbey and Berkhamsted 4th XII. In the 5th place playoff, the girls met St Albans 1st XII and unfortunately did not come out on top. A strong team performance had them finish 10th overall in the nation, another fantastic achievement for Caterham Lacrosse.

LACROSSE COLOMA CUP SEMI-FINALISTS
U12 SURREY COUNTY TOURNAMENT
The U13B and U13C team participated in the Coloma Cup held at Caterham in March.
The U12A and U12B wrapped up their season with their Surrey County tournament on 17 March.
The Coloma Cup was set up as a development tournament for B and C teams as well as for smaller lacrosse schools. The U13B team advanced to the semi-final of the cup competition where they unfortunately lost to Claremont U13A. The U13C also had a fantastic showing, narrowly losing in golden goal overtime to Putney High School in the Plate Final. The girls’ play was great confirmation of all the hard work put in over the course of the season. Well done, girls!
Both teams have proved to be very strong sides throughout the season, having a combined record of 13-6-1 over the course of the season. The U12A advanced to the Cup semi-final and had a strong win over St Cats to put them through to the Surrey County final. The U12As met Guildford High in the finals, a side they drew earlier in the day! Another back and forth game led to a 2-1 victory for Guildford. Finishing runners-up in the Surrey County Tournament bodes extremely well for the future! In the group stages, the U12Bs had wins against Dunottar and St Cats U12Cs to
advance them to the Plate Semi-final, the best any U12B Caterham has ever achieved! A nail biting game against Claremont, saw a last minute goal to go ahead for Claremont and send them to the Plate Finals. An unbelievable achievement for our U12Bs to even compete in the Plate competition. The next day the U12A travelled to Dulwich Prep in Cranbrook to participate in the final tournament of the season, the Baston Rose Bowl. A great morning of the lacrosse placed Caterham 3rd overall! CROSS COUNTRY GIRLS WIN AT WELLINGTON COLLEGE RELAYS The Cross Country team travelled to the Wellington Relays, hosted every year at Wellington College for some of the top running schools in the south-east. A wide range of schools competed, including Sevenoaks, Brighton College, Magdalen College School and Harrow. Despite losing our four strongest runners to the Surrey team competing in the Inter-Counties competition, a strong team performance from the Senior Girls’ team of Hannah Williams (Fourth Year), Katie Watson (Fourth Year), Poppy Oliver (Second Year), Eloise Bull (Lower Sixth) and Amy Dickson (Lower Sixth) saw them come out well clear of 2nd placed Brighton College. Eloise Bull put in a particularly strong run to finish six seconds shy of the fastest time, and a fantastic run from Poppy Oliver, competing against runners many years older saw her come back with the 11th fastest time. Caterham also entered Junior teams, with the Junior Girls’ B team (1st and 2nd years) showing the value of commitment to training by pipping the Junior Girls’ A team (3rd years) by just 2.5 seconds over a 45 minute race thanks to an exceptional final leg by Tabby Welsh and a very good run from Grace Godfrey. Nevertheless, both teams went home happy with Caterham B in 2nd place, and Caterham A in 3rd. The Junior Boys’ team finished just outside the medals in 5th.
KNOLE RUN TOP 10 POSITION Results from the Knole Run: On a snowy Saturday in January Caterham Girls’ Cross Country competed at the Knole run in Sevenoaks securing a top-ten position for the School. Our top four runners of Olivia Dowle, Sophie Dowle, Caitlin Lefevre and Maddy Pullen put in very strong runs, in conditions much better for sledging than running to all finish inside the top 40. They were ably supported by Hannah Williams and Holly Mead who finished solidly in the middle of the field giving the team our strongest result for some years, 6th out of 22 teams. The standard was, as usual, superb with GB and England runners leading the field. The team included four Lower Sixth and two Fourth Year pupils, indicating an even stronger performance for next year. The Cross Country season at Caterham continued with a good number of boys and girls running for South Surrey in the Surrey Championships and a number of our runners capable of qualifying for the National Championships: Ben Brown, George Thomas, Maddy Pullen, Olivia Dowle, Sophie Dowle and Caitlin LeFevre.

Caterham School’s swimmer travelled to the Olympic Aquatic Centre in Stratford to compete in the prestigious Bath Cup held on March 10.
Congratulations to all Caterham swimmers who have represented their swimming clubs for their retrospective county championships.
To be a part of such a prestigious event is a great honour as only the fastest schools in the country are invited to compete. After a long day of travelling and sitting around waiting to race, the team performed to the highest standard.
These championships are one of the key dates in a swimmer’s fixture calendar, as they compete against the best swimmers in their county. There have been some fantastic results and here are just two success stories:
Out of a total of 33 schools, the girls team consisting of: Izzy Berlin (Fourth Year), Siobhan Chou (Fourth Year), Amy Davies (Fourth Year), Niamh Ryan (Third Year) and Leah Slattery (Fourth Year), came 5th in the 4x50m Freestyle in a time of 1.56.58 (our highest ever finish), and came 11th in the 4x50m medley relay in a time of 2.12.38.
Well done to Lucy Bullock (First Year) who achieved a new personal best in the 50m freestyle, finished 7th in the 100m front crawl and 4th in the 200m front crawl. A special mention should be given to Amy Davies (4R), who won an astonishing; 5 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze medals.
Out of a total of 39 schools, the boys team consisting of: Desmond Chui (Lower Sixth), Seb Deacon-Jackson (Third Year), James Lovell (Upper Sixth), Angus Yeun (Upper Sixth) and Howince Or (Upper Sixth), finished 13th in the 4x100m Freestyle in a time of 4.11.27, and was ranked 7th after all heats in the 4x50m medley relay in a time of 2.05.67.
SKIING INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS’ SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS Caterham School entered the Independent Schools’ Ski Championships, which took place just before Christmas, in the French ski resort of Les Deux Alpes. Our top four runners of Olivia Dowle, The ski conditions were perfect with blue skies and great snow. Without exception, the pupils gained so much from the expert tuition and from the opportunity to race in slalom events. With over 180 entrants there, it wasn’t surprising that the standard of competition was fierce. Our Senior Squad improved throughout the tournament and on the last day recorded an excellent team win over fellow competitors KCS Wimbledon! Two pupils from Caterham Preparatory School, Coral McGarvie and Ava Ware, achieved Silver and Bronze medals respectively in the Under 9s competition. Also of note, Caterham School won the Quiz competition!

Caitlin qualifies for World Championships Congratulations to Lower Sixth pupil Caitlin Lefevre, who has qualified to compete for the Great Britain Under 20 age group team in the Sprint Distance Duathlon World Championships, which take place in Penticton, Canada this summer. Caitlin finished third her in age group in the qualifying race, which took place in Bedford earlier this month. Caitlin is hoping that racing at the age group World Championships will give her the opportunity to be selected into the GB Elite Triathlon team. Six days after the duathlon, Caitlin will compete in the Aquathon Under 20 age group World Championships, which she qualified for after competing in a recent triathlon.
The School was chosen for offering an extremely high quality coaching environment for those young players. SPORTS REVIEW SUMMER 2017
Sporting highlights Representative honours for Caterham rugby stars Caterham School sportsmen Tyler Norwood and Jude Williams have been selected to represent Surrey at Under 16 level following the pair’s key role part in Surrey’s recent victory over Hampshire.
England Rugby pick for Old Cat Elliot Old Caterhamian Elliot Hall has been selected into the initial 33 man England squad for the forthcoming Student World Cup this summer. Elliot, who is now studying Sport Science at Loughborough University, has made remarkable progress in Rugby League after only taking it up at University. Until that point Elliot had focussed his attentions on Rugby Union where he had significant success, gaining representative honours at County level at Under18, representing London South-East Under 18 and also playing for the Independent Schools Lambs National XV. Elliot was also part of the highly successful Caterham 1st VII who made the last 32 of Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens in 2015. He will now go through a tough training schedule as the initial squad is whittled down to a touring party of 24 for the World Cup which will take place in Australia. During the Easter holiday, Elliot Hall was part of the squad who won against the RAF team 26-6 in the first of their warm up games for the World Cup later this summer.
Another National Lamb at Caterham Fifth Year pupil, Jude Williams, has been selected for the Independent Schools Lambs National XV at U16 level. This is a great achievement by Jude and is just reward for the hard work he has put in. Jude, alongside Tyler Norwood and Ollie Repton, was one of three Fifth Year boys to play in the 1st XV this year and this exposure to a quicker and more physical level of rugby has paid dividends with this selection. Jude will hopefully make his debut against the Worcester Warriors Academy and there are further fixtures Vs Saracens Academy and Irish Exiles. Jude is the latest in a string of recent success at this level for Caterham, following in the footsteps of Matt Foulds, Rory Carter, Elliot Hall and Cory Nelson who have all represented the Lambs in recent seasons.
Tyler Norwood also played for Harlequins U16 team at the BMW Wellington Academy Festival in the week before Easter. Tyler was a key part of the Harlequins side who went unbeaten for the whole week against other participating academy sides. Caterham School also celebrated two representatives, Conor McNeil and Che Ocugboju, in the South East Independent Schools Lambs Under 18 team for the Lambs’ regional festival. The Lambs side comprises the finest players from schools across England. Mr Dan Richards, Head of Rugby at Caterham, said “Both boys did very well on the day and were great ambassadors for the School. Well done to all four boys on their representative honours, they are continuing a fine tradition and track record of representational honours for the side.”
Mr Taylor’s Penguins Rugby Pick Mr Alistair Taylor, our Head of Strength & Conditioning, was invited to play for prestigious invitational team Penguins Rugby in their annual fixture vs Cambridge University at the historic Grange Road ground on February 1. The Penguins have a huge list of historic alumni including recent IRB World Player of the year, Beauden Barrett, Owen Farrell (who played in this very fixture in 2010) and Caterham’s Head of Rugby, Mr Daniel Richards! Alistair is currently attached to Championship side Richmond FC and balances his playing around his many School commitments. It is a great honour to represent the Penguins and shows that Alistair is a player held in very high regard.
