WELCOME Welcome to the latest edition of the Caterham School Society events programme. Our programme aims to promote and support our inclusive and active community of parents, pupils, Old Caterhamians, staff and friends of the School. We are fortunate to benefit from such a vibrant and supportive community here at Caterham. From performing arts to fireworks and lectures to sporting events, our packed programme offers something for everyone this autumn and winter. We are delighted to be hosting parent-led events too. Autumn Events 2017
ArtsHouse will bring some of the UK’s best professional theatre productions to the heart of Caterham with a fresh, innovative programme featuring awarding-winning productions from the Edinburgh Festival, the Brighton Fringe and festivals across the UK. ArtsHouse performances and workshops are open to everybody, providing a new hub for theatre audiences in Surrey and Kent who are keen to see cutting edge, professional work in the local area. Our brand new Centre for the Performing Arts offers the perfect home for ArtsHouse with an 80 seat studio theatre and 300
seat theatre space – both hosting this exciting and diverse programme of performances and workshops that will run throughout the year. ArtsHouse is curated by The Human Zoo Theatre Company, an award-winning, internationally touring theatre company based in Surrey.

Introduction to Jewellery Making: Six-week Course

During this six week introduction to jewellery making you will have the opportunity to create simple pieces of jewellery from silver using traditional jewellery making techniques. No previous experience needed. Maximum of eight places. Ticket price: £250 Moncrieff-Jones Society 50th Anniversary Celebration featuring a talk ‘brain-machine interfaces: past, present, and future’ by Old Caterhamian Dr Luke Bashford, Caltech.

ARTSHOUSE: Luke Wright – Poetry Performance 7.00pm We are delighted to start our 2017/ 18 ArtsHouse programme with an energetic, cutting edge poetry performance from Luke Wright. Luke’s debut collection – Mondeo Man – was published in 2013 by hip London imprint Penned in the Margins. Alongside his own shows, Luke is John Cooper Clarke’s support act. Luke’s work has proved a hit with Clarke’s fans, playing in front of up to 2,000 people a night at venues such as The London Palladium and The Palace Theatre in Manchester. His poems are often on the radio, generally BBC Radios 3 & 4 – Luke is a regular contributor to the Sony Award-winning Saturday Live. Age recommendation 16 + (Fifth Year upwards) due to challenging content and language. Tickets are priced £10 and can be booked through Wisepay. The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer. Donations on the day are made to Macmillan.

Caterham School Society Lecture: Why May Lost by Mr Toby Cooper 7.00pm Humphreys Theatre Political commentator and blogger, co-author of Government and Politics for A Level and Caterham’s Head of Politics, Toby Cooper gives a review of the recent general election campaign and its effect on the current political landscape, with particular reference to Prime Minister Theresa May. A valuable and highly informed insight into the UK’s shifting political landscape.

Introduction to Diamonds 7.00pm-9.00pm The Leathem Room Join us in raising money for Brain Tumour Research and buy a ticket for this fascinating and insightful event which will provide basic skills to better appreciate diamonds, and understand what qualities to look for when buying.
Brain Tumour Research is a national charity which supports research into gliobalstoma tumours at Queen Mary University in London. Discover more about their work via: braintumourresearch.org
The interactive diamond workshop is a sociable, fun and practical way to learn more about the properties of diamonds – ideal if you are keen to purchase either loose diamonds or diamond set jewellery. Participants are encouraged to bring their own diamond set jewellery.

ARTSHOUSE: Antigone – Actors of Dionysus

6.30pm-9.30pm Hill Fields Pavilion A first-look at the new Hill Fields Pavilion, the “spiritual home of the Old Cats”, and the start of the OC Big Weekend. Enjoy a sneak preview of the fabulous new facilities over a drink and delicious autumn fare. Welcome drinks will be served from 7.00pm-7.30pm, and a buffet will be available from 7.30pm. There will be a cash bar until 11.00pm.
Company Actors of Dionysus (aod) create an edgy, current and urgent piece of new writing that will reverberate with audiences today. Actors of Dionysus take Sophocles’ ancient Greek classic Antione and place it into a dystopian world where fate is written in code and drones flock across the skies. Directed by aod’s Art Director Tamsin Shasha and written by BritishAmerican playwright Christopher Adams (Lynchburg and Haunts).

Actors of Dionysus have received much acclaim for their previous productions which include She Denied Nothing, Helen Lysistrata, Bacchae and Medea. They have toured internationally and at theatres and national parks across the UK. They have also performed on BBC Radio and have collaborated with Channel 4 and the BFI.

Recital of Reflection and Contemplation

11.30am Wilberforce Hall A moving and uplifting recital, which follows the Remembrance Service, given by the School’s choir, The Eric Thiman Singers. A fitting tribute for Remembrance Day, with powerful words set to beautiful music. Friends and family are welcome to attend.
Join us for this moving ceremony at the front of the School; followed by a recital from the Eric Thiman Singers in the Wilberforce Hall. Stay for the afternoon’s traditional OC versus the School rugby and lacrosse matches.

St Catherine’s Hospice Charity Santa Fun Run 7.00am-12.00pm Sports Centre and Beeches Field An evening of true scholarship which will see some of our most able pupils present on a topic of special interest to them before fielding questions from a judging panel and the audience. Our esteemed panel of guest judges will decide the winners of three prestigious prizes with the audience also casting their vote.
Don your Santa suit and run, walk or strut around the Caterham School site in aid of St. Catherine’s Hospice. A fun way to raise funds for a cherished and vital local charity.

2017 Caterham School Production: David Copperfield by Charles Dickens (adapted by Alastair Cording). 7.00pm The Humphreys Theatre We are delighted to announce that the Autumn Term production will be David Copperfield by Charles Dickens (adapted by Alastair Cording). One of Dickens’ best-loved and autobiographical stories, brilliantly dramatised with humour and tragedy, featuring much cherished characters: Micawber, Uriah Heep, Peggotty, Betsey Trotwood and Murdstone.

Aim to get faster in the pool by improving technique, fitness, strength, speed and knowledge. Caterham Swimming Academy are now offering a five-day swimming camp to improve fitness, technique and knowledge for competitive swimmers. All participants must be able to swim a minimum of 400m comfortably.
