CATHEDRAL COLLEGE WANGARATTA Fortnightly Newsletter
In this edition..... From the Principal ANZAC Day Pride Mother day celebrations State Swimming Finals Robotics Club School Photos information
From the Principal MR NICK JONES I trust this edition of our newsletter finds you well and enjoying this thoroughly magnificent northeast weather. As the leaves on the trees change colour to brilliant reds and oranges it is timely to reflect on how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful part of the country. The Term One holidays were an opportunity to refresh and recharge and we are looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that the new term will present. On Monday, April 19, our teaching staff enjoyed a day of professional learning and collaboration before our students returned to the school the following day. The current focus for our staff is teacher efficacy. Teacher efficacy relates to the collective belief and understanding that all staff have a significant influence on the learning outcomes of our students in the classroom. This focus ensures that staff continually reflect and review their teaching practices to ensure that students are engaged in the highest quality teaching and learning each day. This process also requires regular feedback from students, and I commend our Director of Studies, Mrs Julie Findlay for her efforts in ensuring students are given opportunities to provide this feedback to us. Our students have continued to shine in the sporting area during the past few weeks. Of significant note was our CCW Senior Swimmers who travelled to Melbourne for the State Championships. As usual, our students were fantastic ambassadors for our school community. Cathedral College finished eighth overall and a special mention goes to our seventeen-year-old girls’ freestyle relay team who won a gold medal. Congratulations girls, a fantastic achievement! I would like to thank all members of the school community who have taken the opportunity to contribute to both the uniform review and the electronic device survey. Feedback received will be analysed closely and we will continue to communicate the outcomes of these reviews in the coming months. As Mother’s Day approaches, I would like to wish all our mums a very happy Mother’s Day. I greatly appreciate all your support and I thank you for all you do to support the learning of your children. I hope to see many of you at our Mother’s Day breakfast on May 7. All the best.
ANZAC DAY PRIDE The College has a proud tradition of acknowledging ANZAC Day and this year was particularly memorable as people were able to gather again to pay tribute to the sacrifices of those who have served in the armed forces. The College commemorated ANZAC Day at school on Friday the 23rd of April. We thank Liz Rouse Salmon, Ceremonial Officer of the RSL Wangaratta Sub-Branch, and Mr Ken Clarke, OAM, Former Treasurer of the RSL Wangaratta Sub-Branch and Former Mayor of Wangaratta who attended this special occasion. Due to continuing COVD-19 restrictions, the various local RSL sub-branches commemorated ANZAC day in different ways. It was wonderful however to hear that many Cathedral families and students attended their local RSL branch ANZAC Day March and/or service. The College Captains, Tess Palubiski and Henry Stephens laid a wreath at the Wangaratta RSL ceremony. At Benalla, the March was led by Macie Taylor-Parkins, Jaiden Taylor-Parkins, Tegan Murphy, Alex Murphy, and Grace Loveday. The College was also represented in the March by Cobbler House Captains Emily Guy and Rachel Gibbs, Thomas, James and Lucy Wilkinson, and Alexander and Noah Murray. A wreath was laid by the Wilkinson family and Mackenzie Guy and Emily Guy did a reading at the 11 am ceremony. Thank you to all the students who represented our school with pride and nobility.

From the Head of Junior School MR GREG NEWBOLD Congratulations to our students for commencing Term Two with composure, cheerfulness, and a sense of purpose. Teachers have commented favourably upon the smooth and respectful start they have made, and how quickly they have settled back into routine and structure. Term Two has many significant events occurring. From a curriculum perspective, the formal Semester One report is provided at the end of Term Two. This is a summative report, encapsulating the quality and quantity of work completed, skills and knowledge acquired, and the behaviour and attitude demonstrated by each student in the classroom and social situations. I encourage all families to remind their children of the responsibility they each have for learning and helping others to learn by being diligent, courteous, and kind to staff and students alike. NAPLAN for Years Three and Five in the Junior School is delivered from Tuesday, May 11. Our students completed the online trial of this assessment in Term One with a minimum amount of fuss or concern. Developing test skills are an important part of the educational journey. Students feed off the emotions of others; be it positivity, happiness, worry or frustration. NAPLAN is one of many different tests that students will encounter. From a school perspective, like all assessments, it provides information for our teachers that support them in developing learning programs that aim to enhance the educational outcomes of their students and class.

Welcome Back - Term Two Resumes The Middle School community had a successful first week back at school after their Easter break. It was pleasing to witness our students move back into their academic routine and adjust to the expectations within our classrooms. All students received their progress reports at the end of Term One, which has allowed them to understand how they are travelling in all subject areas and where there is room to improve. It is important that all Middle School students start to practice managing their time outside the classroom to allow them to remain up to date with their homework tasks and their general organisation. Students should continue to write all key dates and homework tasks in the diary and should remember to take their diaries home each night, so they are aware of what is coming up each week.
Year Seven Camp After having to postpone the Year Seven Transition Camp which was scheduled to take place early in Term One, our Year Seven cohort will finally get the chance to head up to Howman’s Gap on Monday, May 3 and they will return on Wednesday, May 5. The group will be leaving the campus at 7.15 am on Monday and will return by 3 pm on Wednesday. The camp is a wonderful opportunity to continue to build on the friendships that have been established in Term One as well as get the chance to spend time with students who are in different homeroom groups. All students have been provided with a ‘What to bring’ list and it is hoped that all students make the most of the opportunities and experiences that are awaiting them next week.
Cross Country Next week all students will be involved in participating in the School’s Cross-Country on Thursday, May 6. All students will compete in their relevant age groups and will be allowed to wear their House Polo Top with their Cathedral Sports Uniform to school on this day. Students are encouraged to prepare for this event by scheduling some running sessions before Thursday. A daily 20-30 minute jog can improve your overall health and fitness, as well as prepare you for this event. The top-performing students from each age group will have the opportunity to move on to the next level of inter-school competitions. Middle School will be competing after recess during Periods 4 and 5.
Community Time – Guest Speaker This week during Community Time all Middle School students will be hearing from Eric Agyeman who has worked with several schools and communities to focus on improving mental wellbeing, building resilience and inclusivity among students. It is hoped that our students can learn from Eric’s own experiences and messages about using language in a positive manner. Seeds for Space The Year Seven Agriculture and Horticulture class are embarking on a project to space! As a part of their studies they will partner with AHiS in an experiment to send seeds of sweet and holy basil to the International Space Station (ISS) to be grown for a month and then sent back to Earth to undergo detailed analysis including investigations in the morphological, scent and gene expression. We look forward to the results!
From the Head of Senior School MS ANNE HARRIS
Building School Culture I have been really impressed with the way the Senior School has settled back into school life and academic learning from our Term One holidays. Already there has been a lot happening with ANZAC Day Services at school and around the local districts, Parent Teacher Interviews, State Swimming Championships, golf, basketball, soccer and volleyball competitions, field trips, Outdoor Education excursions and camps, Chapel, House activities, and the Hotham Assembly presented by Mrs Gerrish and the House Captains. It is everything and more, that is listed above, that makes up the culture of Cathedral College Wangaratta. Culture is what I spoke about to students at today’s assembly. I liken culture to a snow dome; you can give it a good shake, but in the end, things can still settle back to how they were before. I believe there is already a very healthy, positive, and welcoming culture in our school. Sustaining and building on this culture to be even more caring, inclusive and a community with self-pride, is hard work and we all have our part to play. Each member of The College community has a part to play in helping to sustain and build on our school’s culture. Today, I used the phrase, “if it is to be, it is up to me”. Each of us has a role in caring for each other, making each other feel safe to come to school. I asked the staff and students at today's assembly, "What kind of words do I use? What is my language like? Will it make other people listening feel safe and included?" This is how each of us can continue to improve our school culture. Traditions, routines, expectations, and interactions inside and outside the classroom doors, create school culture. I have been working with the Year Level Coordinators, Heads of House, and School Captains to learn what makes up the culture of The College and ask ‘what else could we do to enhance and strengthen our sense community?’. One of the traditions and a strong part of the culture of our school is the events run by the Houses. Coming up is Warby House’s, Mother’s Day Breakfast. Not only is this an opportunity for staff, students, and parents to come together it is a chance for our staff and Warby students to serve you and raise money for the McGrath Foundation. I look forward to seeing you there in a splash of pink.
Robotics Club A new lunchtime robotics club started this week called Pirate Code. It will run Monday and Friday lunchtime in Art 2 with a new challenge every week for 8 weeks. This week students are trying to program their EV3 Mindstorm robots to perform a Mexican Wave. Students are welcome to drop in, but once numbers reach 20 we will take names for next term. For any questions, email Ross Baker rbaker@cathedralcollege.vic.edu. au
From the Director of Studies MRS JULIE FINDLAY
Parent-Teacher Interviews The term has begun well. Students have returned to the classroom after the Easter break reestablishing routines and ready to build upon their learning in this second term. During the holiday's Progress Reports were emailed out to families with a student in Year Six to Twelve. Please contact the school if you did not receive a report. Based on the feedback from teachers, many parents and guardians attended Parent-Teacher interviews on Monday and Tuesday evenings. These interviews provide teachers and parents the opportunity to discuss goals and strategies for improvement. Please contact the Homeroom teacher if you missed these interviews and you wish to discuss your child’s progress.
NAPLAN Online – May 11 – 14 This year students in Years Three, Five, Seven, and Nine will complete their NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) online. The students will complete one test per day from May 11 to 14. The online format of the tests helps provide adaptive assessments depending on their ability. If a student is absent during this week a catch test will take place in the following week. If you do not wish your child to participate in NAPLAN please contact me, before the tests begin. I can be contacted at jfindlay@cathedralcollege.vic.edu.au
Adjustments To Assessment On returning to the classroom this year, as a staff, we have evaluated the key priorities for this year. It is vital that we rebuild a sense of belonging in the students and establish relationships with their peers and staff. On an academic level, it is also important that we allow as much time as possible to establish learning routines and recap on knowledge and skills for this year and 2020. As a result, formal examinations in a set timetable will only take place for Year Eleven and Twelve students. Students will still complete formal assessment tasks which are scheduled during class time. Students will be made aware that this is a standardized assessment for all in the year level. At the end of the year, Year Nine and Ten students will complete examinations, in order to prepare them for the examinations at VCE.
Review on National Curriculums Cathedral College Wangaratta follows the Australian Curriculum. This is a national curriculum, which we follow for all subjects and has been in place since 2009. This year the content is being reviewed. Teaching and Learning Leaders will participate in the review process with Independent Schools Victoria. This will not only allow us to understand the planned changes, but also allow us to provide input on what would be most beneficial for our students. In addition, the VCE pathway offering is also being reviewed with changes suggested for many VCE subjects and VCAL. Once again, our leadership team will be involved in providing feedback during this review process and using our understanding of the new pathways to provide further opportunities for learning and preparing for Year 13 in 2021.
Dates For The Future As mentioned earlier we are currently reviewing our curriculum, subject offerings, and strategies to support our students. We are considering how COVID has changed learning at school and consulting with students on how we can learn from these experiences. We will also consult with parents and guardians to gain their feedback in the coming weeks. The results of our findings and how this may shape schooling in 2022 will be shared at our information sessions in Term 3. Please save the date:

God is with us We are told in the Psalms “God is our shelter and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.” - Psalm 46
This past week we have been thinking and reflecting on ANZAC day, the stories of courage, endurance, and mateship that have endured since the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula on the 25th April 1915. The words of Psalm 46 tell us that if we put our trust in God we do not need to be afraid, that we too can have the courage, the endurance, and the friendships to help us face the tough times when they come our way, and in that “God is with us.” They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.
Wellbeing with the School Counsellor MS JUNE STAMP Raising girls in today’s modern world can be a difficult path for parents and carers to navigate. These days, girls are transitioning to puberty a lot earlier than they used to and the physical, psychological, and emotional changes they experience are challenging. As a result, by mid-adolescence, girls are twice as likely to develop mood disorders more so than boys. Some parents and carers may feel uncertain about how best to support their daughter through the ups and downs of adolescence and how to keep the lines of communication open. With the rise of social media and technology, mental health difficulties in girls are increasing as often they are faced with online images that make it difficult to see themselves as acceptable. Ensuring a daughter’s opinions are heard and her views listened to, will go a long way towards making her feel loved and supported as she tries to establish her own identity. In this edition of SchoolTV, adult carers will attain a clearer picture of what girls are wanting from their adult carers and how best to support them through adolescence. http://cathedralcollege.vic.schooltv.me/newsletter/raising-girls If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact The College for further information or seek medical or professional help.
The Cathedral College staff recently participated in education to support student’s mental health, delivered by Beyond Blue’s national mental health in education initiative ‘Be You’. The session on Early Support: How to Notice, Inquire & Provide support for students, highlighted mental health can fluctuate. It is important for educators to notice these changes in their students so they can provide the most appropriate support within the boundaries of their role. The session strengthened the educator’s knowledge and confidence in this area and provided tools to assist in this process. One of the tools described was how mental health, and mental health conditions, are different and exist on a continuum. At one end, optimal functioning in which a child or young person feels good, functions well, relates well with others and approaches their learning with purpose, curiosity, and optimism. Then at the other end, children and young people have thoughts, feelings and behaviours that are distressing and have a severe impact on everyday activities. With many points in between, it is normal for children and young people to shift back and forth along the continuum in response to different stresses and experiences they may be experiencing at any given time; as expected as part of the development and growing up and life challenges. In Term One, staff also participated in a wellbeing session with Be You. This session explored the components of wellbeing across the individual and a whole-school perspective. This highlights the importance of caring for their own wellbeing and is paramount to support our whole school community.

Cassidy Mailer came back from a serious injury to play the last games of the year. Ava Loughnan and Sam Peppler played multiple games this season which was a great effort as they are in the lower bracket of the age group. Keeley Skepper played extremely well throughout the season and was awarded Runner Up in the 2021 Daisy Pearce Medal for Best and Fairest. Keeley also represented Victoria Country in both the Under 17 and Under 19 levels, earning Best on Ground in the Under 17 game. LOTE Easter Baking Year Eight students in the German B classes were studying Easter traditions in Term One. During the holidays, they treated their families with a German “Hefezopf” (braided yeast bread), which is traditionally eaten in many parts of German-speaking countries during Easter time. After baking and tasting, students and their families evaluated the baking experience and the taste, which was discussed in class last week. If you would like to try to make one, please see the videos the students used: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gInMnqjgKFk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuaCnuWpF4I
