YearsPreptoFive

From Prep to Year Five, the Junior School at Cathedral College Wangaratta offers a rich, diverse curriculum with a strong emphasis on personal and collective wellbeing. Developing and supporting each child to become a respectful learner and positive contributor to school life is of paramount importance.

Through the development of strong fundamental literacy and numeracy skills, a broad Performing Arts and Sports program and a commitment to developing a strong work ethic, our students receive the foundations from which to become lifelong learners and informed citizens.

The teaching staff is enthusiastic, caring and focused. Emphasis is placed on the development of the whole child, with teachers supporting students to grow into confident and happy individuals who become responsible members of the school community and beyond. Strategies to promote independence, collaboration, adaptability, resilience, creativity, optimism and responsibility are embedded in the curriculum.

Students from Prep to Year Five discover the wide world of learning through Literacy, Numeracy, Science and Humanities, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Health and Physical Education, Indonesian and German. Students explore the Christian values of the school and other faiths, during Religious and Values Education (RAVE)classes.

Students develop digital learning skills with the use of ipads. By following the philosophy of any time anywhere digital learning is needed, students learn to use technology when there is an appropriate need.

Enrichment and support are provided by differentiated programs within the classroom, with additional one-to-one or small group support in Literacy and Numeracy provided by our Learning Enhancement team.

YearsSixtoEight

Middle School learning is about extending and developing curiosity, imagination, creativity and problem-solving within a strong framework and structure in the key areas of learning. Students in our Middle School are developed as individuals, are known well by their core teachers, are introduced to the academic elective program, and are formally taught the skills of leadership. With the care of their Homeroom teacher and under the supervision of a Year Level Coordinator, students can take advantage of the offerings of our Learning Enhancement team to help them thrive.

The Middle School’s academic aspiration exists for each child, regardless of their academic profile, and this means that appropriate rigour for them is an ongoing conversation between the child, teachers and parents. Opportunities for differentiated learning pathways are supported with a strong emphasis on core subjects in conjunction with a wide range of electives.

Students are provided with increasing choice and control of their learning with electives that can be explored in Year Seven. They are encouraged to become more independent in their learning and develop the confidence to engage in the many experiences offered at school; we will ask students to set goals in all aspects of their learning, and their personal development is supported strongly by specialist Middle School staff.

Students further explore who they are and their individual interests further in Community Time, in a specifically allocated time for the Middle School. Mixing with other members of their sub-school allows for peer mentoring and cross-age interest development. These are crucial in developing a student to feel a sense of belonging and achievement.

YearsNinetoTwelve

The Senior School, from Year Nine to Year Twelve, continues to build upon partnerships in education between teachers, parents and students. Developing new and consolidating existing capabilities in learning across the curriculum equips students to make informed choices about their future. As a non-selective school, we admit students at all levels of ability.

We pride ourselves on the achievement of enhanced academic outcomes and personal best performance through our broad, well balanced and comprehensive curriculum. Opportunities for differentiated learning pathways are supported. Engaging and authentic teaching and learning practices that integrate various learning technologies prepare our students for life beyond school.

Academic integrity and rigour reinforce the College's philosophy of promoting a culture where learning and scholastic extension are highly regarded. Examinations, common assessment tasks and tests are an integral part of the curriculum. We follow the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority. Year Eleven and Twelve students complete the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE).

Within the CCW holistic learning and teaching framework, the educational practices of the school are focused on developing the entire person, to ensure our students are individuals of character, of integrity, of innovation and of service in the modern challenging world beyond the gates of Wangaratta.
