BELONG

And just like that, the 2021 school year is almost halfway completed. Life at CCW has been as busy as ever and included lockdown 4.0, which although brief, reminded us of how wonderful it has been to be back learning on campus for the majority of this semester. In Term One we enjoyed a wonderful reunion on campus. This event was to showcase how far our school has come since the attendee's graduation. There were a lot of envious looks as we toured the VCE Centre and Senior Library and heard anecdotes of their senior years. This connection to our alumni is what we treasure and endeavour to build upon as a part of CCWOCA. During Term Three of 2021, we are looking forward to once again welcoming our alumni to join us for a get-together in August. This will once again be held in Wangaratta to encourage our alumni to return 'home'. More details on this event can be located towards the end of the publication. And remember, once a Cathedralite, always a Cathedralite! Mrs Kellie Cairncross Director of Development

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

What is a Cathedral Education? Mr Nick Jones

After eighteen months at Cathedral College Wangaratta, I am grateful to be in a position to take stock, appreciate where we are at as a school and reflect on what it is that contributes to and is distinctive of, a Cathedral education. Cathedral College Wangaratta has experienced a significant period of growth and development during the past eight years. From its early beginnings next to The Holy Trinity Cathedral at the Close, to the expansive and impressive facilities that we enjoy at our Murdoch Road campus, we have grown significantly. This spacious and sprawling site has been carefully planned and designed.

The Murdoch Road Campus in 2006 (left) and now The most recent addition to our College facilities will be our School Chapel that is currently under construction. This impressive building is starting to take shape and will be a significant space for our students, staff and school community to gather together. The College Chapel will stand proudly at the front of the campus and is an important statement to the community about our Anglican identity. The Chapel will form both the physical and spiritual heart of our College and we are looking forward to welcoming all members of the community to this special space when it is completed towards the end of this year. Our Anglican identity and traditions are an integral part of our College and are at the core of the decisions we make and the actions we take. We are very proud of our inclusivity and diversity. We encourage and accept enrolments from families of other Christian faiths, from non Christian faiths and from no faith at all. Every student is valued and known well. We invite our students to immerse themselves in a Christian education where they are encouraged to discover, discuss, debate, question and form reason. While the physical appearance of our College may have changed significantly over the years, the essence of what makes our College so special has remained. At CCW, we all contribute to a nurturing, safe and connected school environment and from Prep, our students learn ‘The Cathedral Way’. We expect all members of our community to uphold our values and ethos. The Cathedral Way is measured by actions, not words. It is, for example, wearing The College Uniform with pride. It is valuing diversity and individuality and being inclusive. It is demonstrating respect, kindness, and care. It is having a go and taking opportunities. Our students are challenged to not only understand the values we speak about but also live out these values to make a real difference in the lives of the community in which we live. Some of the significant learning programs that allow students to make real-world connections including our Year Nine Social Enterprise program, our involvement in Environment and Sustainability projects and fundraising for charities and important local causes. We aim to develop a strong sense of citizenship both at the local and global level. We are a forward-thinking and innovative school that prepares students to be 21st Century learners, leaders and thinkers who leave us with a well-rounded, holistic, ‘Cathedral’ education that has prepared them for life beyond the school gates. It is with this knowledge that I am confident that no matter what pathway you have chosen for your future, you will excel and contribute to the world we live in today. All the best.

What's been happening at CCW?

CCW Hockey Field

In Term One the installation of the new synthetic hockey field was completed. This was commemorated with a friendly match between students and staff. It's wonderful to see another exciting addition to our state of the art sporting facilities. The field is located behind the stadium.

Cross-Age Learning

Experiences across all Year Levels Do you remember your Prep buddy? Our current Year Twelve students have enjoyed connecting with their Prep buddy. This semester there was a Buddy Lunch held in the VCE Centre. The younger students were excited to be in the 'Big Kid Area' and connect with the Senior students. House Clubs Our students have also enjoyed spending time within their House groups. This allows students to form friendships through playing games and enjoying activities with students across all year levels. We had Junior School students teach the Senior students games like 'duck-duck-goose', competitive 'paper-scissors-rock' and simple 'chasey' on the oval. All students love this opportunity to connect and develop social skills outside the classroom.

Coming Soon to CCW

The College Chapel

The most recent addition to our College facilities will be our School Chapel that is currently under construction. The Chapel will form both the physical and spiritual heart of our college and we are looking forward to welcoming all members of the community to this special space when it is completed towards the end of this year. This space will be able to seat over 200 students for chapel services, which is very exciting for our chaplains, Reverend David Jones and Cathy Carden. On Friday, June 4 we witnessed the external cross being mounted onto the framework. This was a momentous occasion for our Chaplains and school community.

Life After School with Zoe Goodger

Bachelor of Education (Primary and Disability Inclusion) at RMIT (Alumni 2020) Zoe Goodger was a big part of our school community. While studying at CCW, she was involved with many of the productions, played in the school band, featured on our Kool Skools album and was the House Captain for Hotham House. Zoe completed her Gap Year at The College in the Junior School as a Teacher Assistant. I recently corresponded with Zoe to see how University life was going. What are you studying and where? I am currently undertaking a Bachelor of Education (Primary and Disability Inclusion) at RMIT University, at their Bundoora Campus. Why did you choose to study there? I reviewed the subjects that were offered for the duration of the degree and the coursework was of interest to me. RMIT provided me with the opportunity to major in Disability Inclusion. Also, as someone who had lived in small towns for their whole life, a quieter part of the city is nice. Where are you living while you're studying? I am living on my university's campus, my residential area is called Walert House. What is it like living on campus? My building offers me a studio apartment, meaning I have my own bathroom and kitchen which was important to me. However, some of my friends love living with roommates as it is a good opportunity to meet new people. My residential area offers loads of student days, meaning they throw events for us! Whether that is social sports, movie nights, cooking nights etc. Recently we made and decorated our own pottery, which has been my favourite event so far. What has been your University experience so far? A little different as my first year of University was online due to COVID. I am however very happy living back in Melbourne and seeing my lecturers and peers for my second year. I have found the coursework hard, but I am motivated to learn and complete assignments/exams because I am studying something I am interested in. What is one piece of advice you could give to the current Year Twelve students? You won't remember your SACS or exams. Although they are causing stress now, it's the school community events you will remember; your last sports day, production, class and graduation. Make those moments count, especially the ones with your friends, as soon you will all be off on your own journey. Thank your teachers! They have the 24/7 job of creating a safe and enjoyable work environment for you and they also provide really good advice! We look forward to hearing more about Zoe's exciting adventures ahead - Jessica Drage (Alumni Co-ordinator).

Maggie Worley- Bachelor of Applied Science/Chiropractic at RMIT (Alumni 2020)

Life after Year Twelve is hectic. It has been a huge shift from high school to university as you have to have to be extremely selfmotivated. It’s been hard as I am currently only able to attend two classes in person for my course due to COVID-19, however, those classes are very enjoyable and insightful. The chiropractic clinic I work at is very educational and I thoroughly enjoy it, it’s amazing to see others practice what I am studying. I definitely miss home and all my friends back in Wangaratta, however, this chapter in my life is jam-packed and I love stepping out into the world of adulthood and pursuing my dream career. I’m very thankful for all my amazing teachers throughout my years at Cathedral College who helped me develop confidence as well as teach me many lifelong skills which I know I will continue to apply.
