From the Principal What is a Cathedral Education? After eighteen months at Cathedral College Wangaratta, I am grateful to be in a position to take stock, appreciate where we are at as a school and reflect on what it is that contributes to and is distinctive of, a Cathedral education. Cathedral College Wangaratta has experienced a significant period of growth and development during the past eight years. From its early beginnings next to The Holy Trinity Cathedral at the Close, to the expansive and impressive facilities that we enjoy at our Murdoch Road campus, we have grown significantly. This spacious and sprawling site has been carefully planned and designed.
The Murdoch Road Campus in 2006 (left) and now. The most recent addition to our College facilities will be our School Chapel that is currently under construction. The Chapel will form both the physical and spiritual heart of our college and we are looking forward to welcoming all members of the community to this special space when it is completed towards the end of this year. Our Anglican identity and traditions are an integral part of our College and are at the core of the decisions we make and the actions we take. We are very proud of our inclusivity and diversity. We encourage and accept enrolments from families of other Christian faiths, from non - Christian faiths and from no faith at all. Every student is valued and known well. While the physical appearance of our College may have changed significantly over the years, the essence of what makes our College so special has remained. At CCW, we all contribute to a nurturing, safe and connected school environment and from Prep, our students learn ‘The Cathedral Way’. We expect all members of our community to uphold our values and ethos. The Cathedral Way is measured by actions, not words. It is for example, wearing The College Uniform with pride. It is valuing diversity and individuality and being inclusive. It is demonstrating respect, kindness, and care. It is having a go and taking opportunities. High-quality teaching and learning and outstanding pastoral care and wellbeing programs will always underpin a Cathedral education. We are a forward-thinking and innovative school that prepares students to be 21st Century learners, leaders and thinkers who leave us with a well-rounded, holistic, ‘Cathedral’ education that has prepared them for life beyond the school gates. Despite a few minor setbacks with recent lockdowns, Semester One, 2021 has allowed me to observe the College operating under more normal circumstances. I am truly honoured to lead this wonderful school and wish all our families a restful and safe mid-year break. | VISTA 2021 - Page 2 |
The Principal's Commissioning March 22, 2021 The Commissioning of Nick Jones as the 5th Principal of Cathedral College Wangaratta by The Right Reverend Clarence E Bester, Bishop of Wangaratta, took place in The College Stadium at 11.30 am on March 22, 2021. The Commissioning ceremony was postponed due to COVID-19 in 2020 and whilst Nick has been fulfilling his role as Principal for the past year, it was wonderful to gather to honour the commitment and responsibility bestowed upon Nick and formalise his Principalship at Cathedral College Wangaratta. It was a wonderful ceremony, rich in symbolism and ritual. In attendance were The College Captains, House Captains and Executive; The College Chaplains, The Reverend Canon David Jones and Mrs Cathy Carden; The Chair of College Council, Ms Victoria Mallinder; The CEO of the ASC, The Reverend Peter Laurence OAM; The Bishop of Wangaratta, The Right Reverend Clarence E Bester; Uncle Darren from the Bpangerang People; distinguished guests, including Mr Justin Beckett, Principal of Trinity Anglican College; Mr Keith Willett, Principal of Cobram Anglican Grammar; board members of The College Council; representatives of The College's Parents and Friends Association; students from Years Four, Seven and Eleven; staff members and members of Mr Jones' family who travelled from Perth and Adelaide. This warm, inclusive and symbolic service is a significant event in The College's history. As part of the ceremony, Nick was welcomed by various members of The College community, including representatives of the teaching, administrative and maintenance staff, Ms Michelle Lloyd, Mrs Vicki Roberts and Mr Steven Brown. These representatives welcomed Nick and asked him to lead and inspire the College Community to which Nick pledged that he would 'lead and inspire The College in the work of teaching, administration and care for the people and the fabric of this community'.

Welcome Ms Harris Cathedral College Deputy Principal Cathedral College Wangaratta is delighted to welcome Deputy Principal/Head of Senior School, Ms Anne Harris. Anne is an experienced and innovative educator with a wealth of experience spanning over 20 years. After completing her Teaching Degree, Anne taught in Karratha, WA, before moving back to teach in Perth. Anne has also completed a Graduate Diploma in Education Leadership and a Master of Education (Research). At her most recent school, Anne was the Deputy Principal of Teaching and Learning for eleven years. Her vast experience and breadth of responsibilities have made for a smooth transition to The College. Anne enjoys new challenges and explains that this was part of why she chose to make the move East. She explains, ‘My previous school is part of the Anglican Schools Commission, so I was aware of the great work that Cathedral College was doing. From afar I have watched the College grow and evolve. I enjoy taking new opportunities and the timing felt right’. Anne emphasises the importance of student wellbeing and believes that physically and emotionally healthy young people engage with learning and other opportunities. In The College’s first whole school assembly, Anne spoke to the students about taking risks, of challenging themselves, and, by using the analogy of a hermit crab, ‘coming out of the shelter of their shell’. She believes strongly in students feeling safe in their environment to not only learn effectively but to take risks and step out of their comfort zone.
New Staff - 2021
One of Anne’s favourite quotes is “If it is to be, it is up to me”. She explains, “I really believe that students should feel that they have ownership of their learning and the choices that they make. They should identify and celebrate their individual strengths and passions. I feel I am aligned with Cathedral’s emphasis on providing a holistic education, where our graduates are prepared for a rapidly changing world”. Anne is enjoying all the North-East has to offer. A keen kayaker, she has joined the Yarrawonga Canoe Club. She also enjoys photography, camping and anything outdoors. The College is delighted to welcome Anne. We wish her all the best in her new role and know that she will be an integral part of our school and our student’s success. Q&A with our School Captains
Tess Palubiski and Henry Stephens What made you decide to become a School Captain? I believe that anyone, no matter their age, can make a difference in our world. This was exactly the reason why I wanted to become a School Captain. I aspire to bring change to our school community through developing a culture of trying new things, while allowing the great minds of our future to be developed and valued. It is important to me that the younger generation’s love for learning and adventure is nurtured. I believe that through this role I could encourage our students to want to be heard, be brave, never fear the impossible and reach for the stars - Tess Palubiski. We are all somebody. Throughout my schooling, I have strived to take every opportunity available to me to learn and grow, allowing me to be best prepared for when I join the workforce. I saw the position of School Captain as an incredible opportunity to gain experience in leadership and responsibility, while simultaneously enabling me to represent and support the ideas and endeavours of my fellow students. - Henry Stephens. What skills do you have or need to be a successful School Captain? While the school will try to give you as much warning as possible, sometimes we have short notice to prepare a speech or organise an assembly. The Captaincy role requires adaptability, flexibility and organisational skills. You need to manage and utilise your time efficiently in order to meet these demands while at the same time balance the challenging workload of Year Twelve. Confidence in public speaking and speaking 'on the fly' are also important in this role. Leading by example, being approachable, being a good listener and leading by actions are well as words are also important. What do you look forward to in your school day? Cathedral College has an incredible learning (and social!) environment. Although we have the routine of our timetable, it is a busy campus and there is always a lot going on. We have an extremely close, supportive and caring Year Twelve cohort who make every school day a great experience. We also look forward to the conversations we have with our younger peers. Being a Prep-Year Twelve school, we get to talk to students of all ages. Supporting our younger students is extremely important in our role as School Captains and we really enjoy this part of being a Captain. What do you wish for the students in your year 2021 Captaincy? We will strive to be approachable to all students. We will listen and pass on their questions, concerns or ideas to the best of our ability. Whilst outside of our control, we really hope that the impact of COVID-19 is minimal and that this year they don't experience the upheaval of 2020. We are hopeful that our students can go on school camps, outdoor education trips, school sport competitions and that other fun activities go ahead. Our biggest wish for our fellow Cathedralites is to approach this year by following one of our College mottos; 'Discover, Belong and Achieve'. We want them to try new things, to be curious, to challenge themselves and to strive to be their best.

Representatives for each House were tasked to create a two-course meal. The main course had to use an economical protein source, a minimum of three vegetables and contain a source of grain. The dessert course also needed to include a vegetable. With this design brief in mind, there were some wonderful creations from all Houses. Well done to Buffalo House for coming in first place with 204 points! Second place was Stirling, and in Third place was Warby. A wonderful effort by all.

CROSS AGE LEARNING AND EXPERIENCES Being a Prep to Year Twelve campus not only ensures a seamless transition from year to year, it also encourages students to build new friendships and experience peer mentoring through participation in a wide range cocurricular and House activities. This allows our students to develop vital social skills through working collaboratively with students from a range of ages.
To allow students to develop a strong bond with others within the school community and develop a sense of belonging, they are introduced to our House System from Prep. The College has six Houses and students actively participate in fortnightly House sessions. They also partake in special occasions such as House Music, House Cross Country, House Sports and House Assemblies. There are opportunities to fundraise as a House for a chosen charity, encouraging students to work together in making a difference outside of our school community.

A passion for STEM Girls in Science This semester CCW observed International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The College acknowledges ‘a significant gender gap has persisted throughout the years at all levels of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines all over the world. Even though women have made tremendous progress towards increasing their participation in higher education, they are still under-represented in these fields' - (The United Nations). This year, Cathedral College Wangaratta had sixteen female graduates (CCW Alumni 2020) pathway into a broad range STEAM-related courses. The College’s young women have been inspired to study Science and STEM-related courses due to The College’s innovative, comprehensive, and targeted Science education program that is offered at CCW and begins in the Junior School.
ROBOTICS Pirate Code A new lunchtime robotics club started this semester called Pirate Code. It will run Monday and Friday lunchtimes with a new challenge every week for eight weeks.

Seeds in Space One small step for CCW, and one giant step for mankind.
They might look like ordinary Year Seven students, but they recently embarked on a mission to space!
As part of their studies in Year Seven Agriculture and Horticulture, Cathedral College Wangaratta students sent seeds to an International Space station. They have since been sent back to Earth to be planted to analyse and compare with seeds which are planted on Earth, at school. Students have learnt about topics such including space in general, the significance of growing plants in space, the germination process of plants and tips in making their own plant chambers to grow Basil. Cathedral College is the only Australian school to participate in this round of the program.
Teacher Amanda Naish explains that “We have six seeds that have been sent to space and six seeds that have stayed on Earth. We have set up a time-lapse camera to take images for the next 30 days to capture the growth of the seeds. Students will have to make observations, take photos and record plant growth and then plot a graph using data collected and hypothesise how plant growth will be different in microgravity conditions. Once we have collected our data, we share it with The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) where they use our data to compare and analyse it with the eight other countries that have also participated in the program”. Student Abbey Cagalj said that she has been very excited about the project and the fact that she has held something that has been in space. When asked what she thinks will happen, Abbey feels the growth rates will be similar, “ I actually think they will grow at the same rate but I think the taste might be different due to the lack of oxygen in space”. This is one small step for CCW, and one giant step for mankind.

Our Community It has been wonderful to welcome parents and friends of The College back on campus this year to various events that were held throughout Semester One.
Parents and Friends Committee The Parents and Friends Association is a very active part of our College community. Many fundraising and social events are organised by the Parents and Friends and the support that is provided by this group enriches the College enormously. Funds raised by the various activities are channelled directly into resources that benefit students. This semester the committee hosted the Welcome Morning Tea, The Big Picnic and organised the Mothers Day stall.

ALUMNI- CCWOCA Zoe Goodger - Class of 2019 Zoe Goodger was an integral part of our school community while studying at CCW. She was involved with many of the school productions, played in the school band, featured on our 'Kool Skools' album and was the House Captain for Hotham. Zoe completed her Gap Year at The College in the Junior School as a Teacher Assistant. What are you studying and where? I am currently studying a Bachelor of Education (Primary and Disability Inclusion) at RMIT University and I am based at their Bundoora Campus in North Melbourne. Why did you choose to study there? I reviewed the subjects that were offered during the duration of the degree and the coursework was of interest to me. I liked that RMIT provided me with the opportunity to major in Disability Inclusion. Also, as someone who had lived in small towns for their whole life a quieter part of the city is nice. Where are you living on campus? I am living on my university's campus, my residential area is called Walert House. What is it like living on campus? My building offers me a studio apartment, meaning I have my own bathroom and kitchen which was important to me. However, some of my friends love living with roommates as it is a good opportunity to meet new people. My residential area offers loads of student days, meaning they throw events for us! Whether that is social sports, movie nights, cooking nights etc. Recently we made and decorated our own pottery, which has been my favourite event so far. What has been your University experience so far? A little different as my first year of University was online due to COVID. I am however very happy living back in Melbourne and seeing my lecturers and peers for my second year. I have found the coursework hard, but I am motivated to learn and complete assignments/exams because I am studying something I am interested in. What is one piece of advice you could give to the current Year Twelve students? You won't remember your SACS or exams! Although they are causing stress now, it's the school community events you will remember; your last sports day, production, class and graduation. Make those moments count, especially the ones with your friends as soon you will all be off on your own journey. Thank your teachers also, they have a 24/7 job of creating a safe and enjoyable work environment for you, and they provide really good advice.
CCWOCA REUNION
What is CCWOCA?
In March we enjoyed a wonderful CCWOCA reunion on campus. This event was to showcase how far our school has come and provide an opportunity for past students to catch up with friends and teachers. The connection to our alumni is invaluable and we endeavour to build upon these connections as a part of CCWOCA.
