From the Principal How wonderful to have completed our first full semester in over two years, and what a semester it has been! Firstly, I would like to again welcome our new families to the College. Having now been with us for six months, I sincerely hope your child has settled in well and that your experience thus far has been positive. As always, please let us know if we can support your child in any way. Communication between home and school is vital. Our recent launch of SEQTA Engage is a great way for parents and carers to have access to key information about your child's learning, and we are excited to be able to provide this platform to our families. I also welcome a number of new staff who have joined us this year in various roles across the College. Our educators and support staff are an outstanding group of people. Those who join our team do so not only because of their excellent credentials and experience but also because of their commitment to providing our students with the best educational experience possible. We are beginning to understand what our world looks like 'post' COVID19. It has been fantastic to return to face-to-face learning and to reengage with our students in the classroom. Our students have once again participated in camps, interschool sports, whole school assemblies, social events, and other activities that are so important for our young people's social, emotional, and character development. Although some of these events may have been modified, postponed, or cancelled at the last minute, it has been wonderful to see the smiles on our student's faces as they have once again had the opportunity to participate in these crucial co-curricular activities. The past two years have demonstrated how unpredictable the future can be. While we are conscious that we are educating our young people today to move into jobs and professions that may not have even been thought of yet, we are also educating our students to be innovative, entrepreneurial, and adaptive. We encourage our students to be thoughtful and socially conscious young people who can identify the significant challenges that we as a society face over the coming years. We also strive to support our students to become the leaders of tomorrow who will work to seek solutions for the challenges of climate change, global political instability, possible future pandemics and the other unpredictable challenges that will emerge.
GROW is our school-wide theme for the 2022 school year at Cathedral College. GROW is an acronym for Grit, Relationships, Opportunities and Wonder. Together we have encouraged our whole school community to focus on the important characteristics and opportunities which will assist them to achieve in all aspects of their learning and personal growth. The continued refinement and development of contemporary and high-quality teaching and learning continues to be a focus for Cathedral College in 2022. With the introduction of our Bring Your Own Device Program in the Secondary School and our One-to-One iPad Program in the Junior School, our staff continue to ensure that students are immersed in an engaging and progressive learning environment that allows for differentiated and personalised learning. In 2022 the mental and emotional health of our staff and students remains a key priority as our community recovers from the challenges that the pandemic has presented over the past two years. We are proud of our inclusive and supportive school culture, and while we have all been challenged during periods of remote learning and lockdowns, our strong sense of community has served us well in challenging times. I would like to wish Ms Valerie Crosse all the very best in her retirement and thank her for her wonderful contribution to our school. Val has provided inspirational lessons in her Art classes and certainly developed a keen sense of wonder in our students. She gave our students incredible opportunities and engaging stimuli to create, make and explore their ideas. Lastly, I would like to thank Mr Ian Collins for his incredible contribution to our school. Ian will be greatly missed. There has literally been no job too big or small, and we sincerely thank Ian for his steadfast commitment, dedication and service to the College and commend him on his outstanding work over many years. Mr Ross Moore, our current Assistant Business Manager, will be taking over from Ian next semester. Mr Nick Jones Principal

Farewell, Mr Collins
This semester, the College farewells our long-serving Business Manager, Mr Ian Collins. Ian, who has also been the College's chief car park attendant, leaves Cathedral College Wangaratta to enjoy his welldeserved retirement. Thank you, Mr Collins. Ian started at Cathedral College in 2006. The number of enrolments at the time was 36 students.
Ian’s greatest achievement is that everything he did, he did for the benefit of the College and the College’s students. We wish Ian all the very best and thank him for his many years of service and dedication to our school. Mr Ross Moore, our current Assistant Business Manager, will commence his role as Business Manager next semester. We know that Ross will do an outstanding job and wish him all the best.
An excerpt from the 2006 Aspire magazine states: "Next year we will have students starting their VCE...two relocatable classrooms have been moved to the Murdoch Road campus for students in Years Two to Six. The residence on Murdoch Road came onto the market and the committee decided to purchase the property.....". Ian was integral in the process of the Anglican School’s Commission purchasing the school and from that point in time, it has gone from strength to strength. Ian has overseen the physical growth of the school from The Close campus to the one campus on Murdoch Road. For every building we now have on campus, Ian has had the responsibility for either building or moving it here. Ian’s jobs have included groundskeeper, cleaner, rubbish man, possum catcher, cow herder, removalist and of course, chief car park attendant. He has performed all jobs in good spirit, well mostly anyway!

Consecration of the Chapel of the Good Shepherd
Cathedral College Deputy Principal
On Thursday, March 24, 2022, The Right Reverend Clarence E Bester, Bishop of Wangaratta, formally consecrated the Cathedral College Wangaratta Chapel, ‘The Chapel of the Good Shepherd’.
The naming of the Chapel
Distinguished guests, community members, staff and students were
In Jesus’ description of himself in St John’s Gospel, he says;
welcomed into The Chapel of the Good Shepherd by a smoking ceremony conducted by Bpangerang Elder Aunty Betty. Participating in the consecration and the dedication were The Right Reverend David Farrer; The Reverend Peter Laurence OAM, CEO of the Anglican Schools Commission; Canon Scott Jessup, the Bishop’s Chaplain; The Reverend Dr Mark Mickelburough; Cathedral College Chaplain, and Reverend Catherine Carden, Cathedral College Chaplain. The Right Reverend John Parkes AM led the Sermon, and readings were shared by Mr Nick Jones, Principal of Cathedral College Wangaratta and Bella Bridgeman and Skip Pieper, College Captains. The Chapel of the Good Shepherd is an inclusive, inspiring, peaceful and reflective space where students, staff and the wider College community will gather in worship and communion. The Chapel proudly resides in the heart of our school. It is a place where all members of our community will gather to find peace, calm and
In honour of Christ the good shepherd, the new College Chapel will be known as ‘The Chapel of the Good Shepherd’.
I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.’ (John 10.14-16) Within the main Chapel sits a smaller, more intimate side chapel. The side chapel was dedicated in honour of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. According to legend, Saint Catherine of Alexandria was an extremely learned young girl of noble birth, possibly a princess. She protested the persecution of Christians under the Roman Emperor Maxentius whose wife and several soldiers she converted while imprisoned - and defeated the most eminent scholars summoned by Maxentius to oppose her. Catherine is the patron saint of students and teachers, and therefore a suitable patron of the internal Chapel.

A message from Reverend Dr Mark Mickelburough "I have joined the College from a varied background, having worked as a park ranger in a natural area and fire management, a year-round ski instructor, a primary and secondary school teacher and a chaplain. The unifying thread through all these roles has been the love of mountains and snow, the natural world, and meeting with people in these places. My family and I have moved from Dinner Plain down to the Ovens Valley to be close to the College, with my daughter Grace who has commenced Prep this year at Cathedral College Wangaratta. I look forward to my time here and know that I will enjoy all aspects of my role, but I am particularly looking forward to working with our students."
Congratulations Reverend Cathy Carden This semester, Cathy took the step of being ordained into the Anglican Church. Cathy will continue in her role at school and has now become Reverend Cathy Carden. Cathy will also be involved, mainly on Sundays, in the Anglican Parish of Rutherglen, with Canon Fr Scott Jessup. Meet the School Captains
Bella Bridgeman and Skip Pieper
What made you decide to become a School Captain? For as long as I have been at Cathedral College, the school has felt like home. Cathedral College has helped shape me into the person I am today, and I am proud to be a part of the College community and a friend to all the people involved with it. It is for these people that I applied to become School Captain. I am forever grateful for every part, great or small, the students and staff of Cathedral College have played in my life, and I see the position of School Captain as a way of giving something in return. I aim to represent these people who have shaped the person I have grown into and help each of them to learn and grow in return. – Skip From a young age, I had leadership positions but was always looking for the next opportunity where I could challenge myself. Becoming School Captain in 2022 will allow me to further develop as a leader within the school and the broader community. Additionally, the School Captain Role is also a position of service where I can give back to the school for all the opportunities and support the school and its staff have invested in me. Furthermore, the role will allow me to build on what our previous leaders have achieved and improve the school for current and future students. – Bella
What do you look forward to in your school day? Outside of my normal classes, I enjoy the positive energy that Cathedral College radiates. During breaks, I love any chance I get to interact with people throughout our school community. Whether that be a short chat with a teacher or a game of basketball, I think one of the best things about our school is the interactions and relationships that are built between people as we all grow together. – Skip All the opportunities and experiences that Cathedral College offers. We are close to the snow and mountain ranges and can enjoy experiences on our doorstep. We have a great environment to learn in and facilities to take part in numerous sports. This allows me to improve and challenge myself to set personal, sporting and academic goals. – Bella What do you wish for the students in your year 2022 Captaincy? After the tumultuous years we’ve had, I hope that in 2022 everyone, staff and students alike, can find happiness in their everyday lives. I understand how difficult this period has been for everybody, and I hope that school life can be an anchor of strength for all students and staff. – Skip I wish every success to the graduating class of 2022. I know that we are surrounded by many support people, structures and processes, and I am sure we will be able to adapt to whatever comes our way this year. I hope that all our students challenge themselves to GROW this year (our theme for 2022) and look forward to celebrating their successes. – Bella

GROW 2022 This year the shared theme for the Cathedral College Wangaratta school community is GROW. GROW stands for Grit, Relationships, Opportunities and Wonder. Students are being encouraged to reflect on their understanding of GROW and to think about how they can incorporate these qualities into all aspects of their learning at Cathedral College.
For our students, this may be an opportunity to try something new and to grow as a result of this new experience. Sometimes there is drought, frost, or flooding and the plant needs to weather these conditions to survive. A plant always tries to grow towards the Sun. It is always striving to get the best light. It is hoped we can encourage our students to have this same thirst for wonder and learning”.
Director of Studies Mrs Julie Findlay explains, “Likening the growth of a plant to the growth of our students is a perfect analogy. Much like a plant, every individual has their own unique growing conditions. For example, plants may be moved around to find the perfect location for optimal growth.

Focus on the Arts and Technology
The Arts Creative Faculty shapes, innovates and leads the development and implementation of The Arts and Technology subjects consisting of, but not restricted to, Music, Drama, Art, Food and Technology, Materials and Technology, Media and Information and Communications Technology. These subjects play an important role in the holistic education offered at our College and are important for providing the chance for students to build on problem-solving skills, think outside the square and develop skills for creative industries and other pathways. Students explore and develop skills in design, animation, programming, software development, construction, food preparation, dancing, drama and music through the elective programs offered, and it is exciting to witness the extraordinary creativity that occurs in these classes. The Arts and Technology subjects are offered both in implicit and explicit ways across our curriculum and co-curricular activities. Providing opportunities to study creative and technology subjects allows students to prepare for pathways into the thriving creative industries, one of the fastest-growing sectors of the Australian economy. As a school, we will continue to educate our students for the present and the future and strive to provide a diverse range of subject offerings. | VISTA 2022 - Page 13 |
Year Nine Photography Flying food
This semester, the Year Nine Photography students were tasked with combining the students' learning of photographic conventions with the editing power of Adobe Photoshop. This project helped students understand the power of manipulating images to create maximum visual impact and the use of good old fashioned visual trickery.

Our Community
It has been wonderful to welcome parents and friends of The College back on campus this year to enjoy various events that were held throughout Semester One.
Parents and Friends Association The Parents and Friends Association is a very active part of our College community. Many fundraising and social events are organised by the Parents and Friends and the support that is provided by this group enriches the College enormously. Funds raised by the various activities are channelled directly into resources that benefit students. This semester the committee hosted the Parent Social Evening, the Mothers Day stall and Trivia Night. Being involved in Parents and Friends Association activities is a great way to connect with Cathedral College Wangaratta students and families. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month in the Chapel meeting room or online. All parents and carers of students at the College are eligible to become members and are very welcome to attend monthly meetings.

Emily Clark Class of 2012 Tell us a little about yourself..... Originally from Melbourne, I moved to Benalla with my family in 2001, as my father acquired an engineering job with ADI (now known as Thales). My mum, dad, sister, and I love outdoor activities such as camping, canoeing and fishing, so a move to the country worked perfectly for us. I attended CCW from 2007 to 2012 (Year Seven to Twelve) and when I first started at the school, the Murdoch Road Campus consisted of three demountable buildings and an office. I was located at The Close campus where I completed all my schooling. I grew up as a child with learning difficulties, dyslexia to be specific, and I do believe I would not be where I am today without the attention and support I received from the teaching staff at Cathedral College. Currently, I live in Armadale, Victoria, with my partner Patrick and our two cats, Mikki and Maeve. Patrick is an apprentice mechanic working for Toyota and I work as an Environmental and Geospatial Analyst for Fifteen50 Consulting. What did you do after you graduated Year Twelve? Finishing Year Twelve was a very stressful time in my life. I didn’t get into my first preferences, so I accepted my only offer, Mechanical Engineering at Swinburne University. I very soon realised that engineering really wasn’t for me, so I applied mid-year for a Bachelor of Environmental Science (Environmental Management and Sustainability) at Deakin University. I was promptly accepted into Deakin and started my undergraduate degree in July of 2013.
I loved studying at Deakin and whilst there I completed a student exchange for six months to the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada, as well as a volunteering project in Cambodia. I finished my Bachelor Degree in 2016. No jobs really sparked my interest, so I thought I’d take a leap and work a snow season at Falls Creek, the best decision I ever made. Not only did I get to live in my favourite place in Victoria but I got to ski/snowboard every week and spend time with some amazing, likeminded people. This job also allowed me to work/live two winter seasons in Japan in Niseko, Hokkaido (2017-18) and Hakuba, Nagano (2018-19). I worked winters for Falls Creek from 2017 to 2020 but then COVID-19 caused a rude halt to my beloved winter work. I always planned to study further after my snow season fun and COVID lockdowns were the perfect time to do it. I decided to specialise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and studied for a Graduate Diploma in Geospatial Intelligence at Curtin University (Online). Whilst studying I was offered a part-time job with Fifteen50, an Environmental and Engineering consulting company. I started off creating maps for different projects and helping staff where I could. In August 2021, once I completed my studies, I was offered a full-time role, which brings me to where I am today. I now work on many different projects for multiple different water authorities, councils, and organisations. The work is quite challenging at times but I’m excited and motivated to learn.
What piece of advice would you give to current students at Cathedral College? If there is anything you dream of doing or you’re offered an opportunity, just go for it! I’ve lived in two different countries, travelled the west coast of America, cycled 363km across South Korea from Seoul to Busan, hiked up Mt. Yotei in Japan, sailed on the Young Endeavour from Tasmania to Geelong, and much more. "The things in life you remember are the ones where you went out of your comfort zone and experienced something new. Never be afraid to take the leap because if you don’t like your decision, you always have the same life to come back to". | VISTA 2022 - Page 21|
