EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

REPORT

Remembering J. Reilly Lewis 1945-2016

Greetings, I am pleased to share our 2016/17 Annual Report with you. This report gives us a chance to share an update on the artistic and financial health of our organization. It also provides us an opportunity to recognize and thank the many donors, supporters, and members who keep this chorus exciting and vibrant. The 2016/17 season was a year of both loss and celebration. Unexpectedly in June of 2016, we lost our much-loved Music Director of 31 years. J. Reilly Lewis was the heart and soul of the Cathedral Choral Society, a remarkable musician and a caring friend to so many. Reilly made people feel at home in the chorus and in our audience. The 2016/17 season was the last that Reilly planned as Music Director. He planned it as a musical celebration in tribute to our 75th anniversary year. Reilly was proud and excited by all of the guest artists, choirs, and composers. During this first transition period, we were fortunate to work with excellent guest conductors. So many conductors stepped up to lead and to advise and we are grateful to all of them. For our concerts at the Cathedral we were joined by Lawrence Loh, Joseph Flummerfelt, Michael McCarthy, and Patrick DuprÊ Quigley. Working with these guest conductors provided the chorus the opportunity to see different leadership styles in rehearsal and in performance. Each experience was new and informative for the chorus and we appreciated their dedication and depth of commitment in leading the chorus during this transition year. Gisèle Becker, William Breytspraak, and Gretchen Kuhrmann led our Community Sing-Along events and Dr. Stanley Thurston served as Festival Director for our annual DC High School Choir Festival. In February 2017, we launched a national search for the third Music Director in the history of our organization. Our search for a collaborative and creative leader who will champion the Cathedral Choral Society in Washington, DC and nationally is now complete. In November 2017, we announced Steven Fox as Music Director Designate. We look forward to welcoming Steven to our community and introducing him to our donors and audience. This annual report looks back on the achievements of the past season and shares our strategic direction and vision for the future. It is always a pleasure to greet you at our concerts, whether you are in our audience or onstage. As always, thank you for your important and ongoing support.

Genevieve C. Twomey Executive Director Steven Fox, Music Director Designate

2016/17 SEASON

HIGHLIGHTS Our OPENING CONCERT on Sunday, October 16 was dedicated to the memory of J. Reilly Lewis. The program was revised to begin with Bach’s sublime Ich habe genung, BWV 82a, Mvt. III with soprano Laura Choi Stuart and ended with Berlioz’s jubilant Te Deum. This season was the 40th YEAR of our Joy of Christmas concerts. We were fortunate to be led by guest conductor Joseph Flummerfelt, who was named Conductor of the Year by Musical America in 2004.

Grammy-nominated vocal chamber ensemble NEW YORK POLYPHONY joined us as special guest for our March concert “Amid a Crowd of Stars.” Michael McCarthy, Director of Music at Washington National Cathedral, served as guest conductor for this program. The concert featured intimate, meditative music spanning from chant to renaissance to contemporary, with works by Tallis, Elgar, Tavener, Willaert, Guerrero, Stucky, Andrew Smith, and Ola Gjeilo. New York Polyphony and Cathedral Choral Society performed works separately and together.

Commissions for new works for chorus

Our season ended with an exciting new work by American composer NICO MUHLY, Looking Up for symphonic chorus and orchestra. It was commissioned in celebration of our 75th anniversary. The program also included folkinspired works by Vaughan Williams – The Lark Ascending and Five Mystical Songs – and Dvořák’s Te Deum. Our guest conductor for this final program of the season was Patrick Dupré Quigley, the Founder and Artistic Director of Seraphic Fire and the Firebird Chamber Orchestra.

The Cathedral Choral Society commissioned a new Christmas carol by American composer CARSON COOMAN, Come, Let Us Go Again.

STRATEGIC GOAL: To create concert experiences that are engaging and relevant for today.

1. New York Polyphony, 2. Joseph Flummerfelt conducts Joy of Christmas, 3. Pre-concert talk with composer Nico Muhly, 4. guest soloist Nurit Bar-Josef and guest conductor Patrick Dupré Quigley perform Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, 5. guest conductor Lawrence Loh

Imagine, if you can... ...that it’s a Monday night in December, December 1 to be exact. The evening is cold and snow is in the air. You’ve just hopped off the tram on Wisconsin Avenue and are looking across the street at the Washington National Cathedral for the first time. You’re from Akron, Ohio and recently moved here to work for the federal government. Tonight you are heading to your first rehearsal with a new choir. However, this Cathedral is clearly a construction site and you are not sure where to go. You start to think you are in the wrong place, but then you recognize the small figure of the man you auditioned for a week earlier. He’s waving to get your attention and the attention of other young men and women who are also heading to the Cathedral with scores tucked under their arms - Verdi’s Requiem, a magnificent, operatic work fit for a large space. The energy is exciting - the sense of a new beginning. You can’t wait for the next rehearsal the following Monday, December 8th. But when that day comes the city is in chaos. The volume of people has increased overnight. Everyone is rushing here, there, and everywhere. After work you take the tram, and find your way into the Cathedral, joining your fellow singers who all support each other as they talk about the bombing of Pearl Harbor. There is a shocking realization that there is a new reality. You are living in the capital city of a country that is now at war.

5

Somehow the rehearsal starts. There’s a special connection and understanding that music matters even more now and that this chorus is very important. The year is 1941. The choir is the Cathedral Choral Society, in residence at Washington National Cathedral, and the conductor is Paul Callaway. Callaway himself is new to Washington, DC and the newly appointed Organist and Choirmaster for the Cathedral. Over the next four decades he will be one of the most important artistic leaders in Washington, DC. This was how it began all those years ago.

- written for our 75th Anniversary Jubilee Gala

RECOGNIZING AND CELEBRATING

75 YEARS

Last season we celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Cathedral Choral Society. It was a year-long celebration with robust programming, a major commission for a new work for symphonic chorus and orchestra by Nico Muhly, and a 75th Anniversary Jubilee at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in May. The season began and ended with Te Deums, hymns of praise: Berlioz’s Te Deum in October and Dvořák’s Te Deum in May. The first rehearsal of the Cathedral Choral Society took place on December 1, 1941. War for the United States was on the horizon. The population of Washington, DC was expanding rapidly and founding Music Director Paul Callaway saw the chorus as a way to welcome the community to the Cathedral to sing. The original recruitment poster was distributed to government offices across the city. The Cathedral Choral Society has a rich and important history as DC’s longest performing symphonic chorus. During its 75 year history, the chorus has helped the nation mark important moments in its history and championed American music and composers. Today, the 145-voice chorus is proud to continue as the symphonic chorus-in-residence at Washington National Cathedral.

INSPIRING SINGING IN

SCHOOLS

High Schools

Choir students

The Cathedral Choral Society works alongside choir directors to inspire and support singing in schools. Increasingly, we are working with school choir directors to understand their challenges and needs and support their work. We are also working to connect with students to provide resources and opportunities for them to sing in school, in the community, and with the Cathedral Choral Society. Last year our 12th annual High School Choir Festival was held at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and showcased students from independent, public, and charter schools in Washington, DC. The festival brings school choirs together in a collaborative, non-competitive environment. Our Guest Festival Director was Dr. Stanley J. Thurston. Participating schools and choirs included: Academy of the Holy Cross, Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School, Gonzaga College High School, St. Anselm’s Abbey, Washington Latin Public Charter School, Washington Youth Choir, and Woodrow Wilson High School. The festival day included combined rehearsals, sectionals, workshops, tours of the Basilica, dinner and a career talk with Dr. Thurston. At the end of the program, all choirs and the DC Youth Orchestra came together to perform two works directed by Stanley J. Thurston: Rollo Dilworth’s “Jeremiah’s Fire!” and Dan Forrest’s “Te Deum.” Thank you to last year’s Festival Volunteers: Judith Griffiths, Jennifer Griffiths Orudjev, Mary Olch, Nathaniel Miller, Michael McCarthy, and Ray Rhinehart.

STRATEGIC GOAL: To inspire and support singing in schools. 7
