CATHERINE O’BRIEN INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO
about me. From a young age I’ve had a strong passion for the de sign build industry. Grow ing up around the landscape field and then transitioning to pursuing a major in Interior Architecture has given me a unique and holistic perspective to finding design solut i o n s . Th r o u g h o u t m y s t u d i e s I have focused on the strong impact that design can make and how I can design in a way that helps both the natural and human environment.

Aldo Leopold was an American biologist, conser vationist, and professor at the Universit y of Wisconsin-Madison. His famous book, A Sand Count y Almanac is a book that has resonated with me as a designer and environmental advocate. This book stresses the impor tance of a cohesive relationship bet ween man and the environment, and overall land ethic. The concept for The Aldo is simple, a sustainable micro hotel that is equipped with ever ything you need, and nothing you don’t. The Aldo will have many dif ferent functional room lay outs, a coworking lobby space and an upper level restaurant named af ter his wife and botanist, Estella Leopold. The Aldo strives to set the path for the future of sustainable hospit alit y.
PRELIMINARY CONCEPT AND BRANDING
THE ALDO
THE ALDO THE CONCEPT
The simple logo will be branded across all Aldo hotels. The stoic bird not only resonates with Leopold’s work but provides insight into the hotel and its environmental ideals. It will be placed on all key cards and other branding elements as well as the reception and lobby areas.
THE ALDO FIELD GUIDE
THE FIELD GUIDE When each guest checks in they will be given a field guide. Similar to how Leopold would take his notes, and resonating with the Sand County Almanac. The field guide will hold all key elements of the city and hotel including amenity locations and restaurant and cafe information. It will also share with guests both man made and natural trips they can go visit throughout the city.
ESTELLA Named af ter Leopold’s wife, Estella, this American restaurant will sit atop the top floor of The Aldo. Estella was a biologist, enviromentalist and botanist. The Estella will hold these ideals true from the menu, food, and design.

THE CLIENT OPTIMAL Dental is a new company moving into a space in Austin TX. They treat a range of clients from young children to adults. The goal of the company is to have a universal brand that could span across the US. My concept was to use local topography and natural flora to inspire each new office across the states as the brand expands. Here in Austin, a unique topographic light and smooth natural lines carry throughout the space, as well as calming natural colors.
CUSTOM AUSTIN TOPOGRAPHIC LIGHT
Inspired by the local topography of Austin. This light above the pediatric bay makes the children both intrigued and connected to their local area while they receive treatment. Slightly different from the rest of the calming environment of Optimal, the pediatric bay aims to keep the children entertained and provide a more playful environment.
STAFF LOUNGE
RCP
The staff lounge provides a space for staff to take respite from their busy workdays. Here they have personalized locker space, a communal table and functional kitchen for

DENVER & 360 DAYS OF SUN I strongly believe interior design does not stop at the threshold. Combining both the interior and exterior of NEXT’s office space provides a relaxing environment for staff and clients. The outdoor patio is the perfect space for breaks throughout the busy workday.

OPEN OFFICE Throughout the office there are various areas available for either touch down work or more heads down work at the typical desk. The office will give the staff many different options in terms of work surfaces. Huddle spaces were also spaced on main circulation paths for easy access.
