PORTFOLIO 2017 Catherine G. Borgstrom INDUSTRIAL DESIGNER

Why Industrial Design?

I began my journey in Industrial Design at CCA knowing next to nothing about it. All I knew was that it seemed to me to be the perfect marriage of my interests and abilities earlier in life. I’ve always been good at problem solving, I love math, logic, and finding ways to simplify my life and others. And I’ve also always been incredibly drawn to art, be it my own artistic expression or the aesthetic choices in other’s work. CALIFORNIA COLLEGE I find art and design to be the most honest way of learning OF THE ARTS about a person, place, or culture. Industrial Design 2017 Finally, I see design thinking as an opportunity to influence and reframe the changing culture of the world and look out for our collective future through the products we choose to create.

FIRE EXTINGUISHER SMOKE DETECTOR

Modelmaking We made over 100 sketch models which we used to test proportions and user interaction.

Technology & Interaction Basic decibel sensing technology allows this alarm to become a hub for other audio alarms in your home. Smart Detector alarm is triggered or when it hears another alarm, a notification is sent to your Galaxy phone through the Samsung SmartThings app.

Visual Cues Blue light used as touchpoint indication Venting inspired by computer cooling vents as they represent the same need for airflow.

Form Inspiration Subtle step curves and profiles found on Samsung consumer electronics such as laptops and TVs translated into the body curvature. Beautiful in form as well as functional in directionality and ergonomics.

Earthquake Safety Kit

Research

I conducted user interviews with people who lived in the California earthquake zones to determine what would best suit their earthquake kit needs, and did book research to figure out how my solution could be adapted to different parts of the world.

2010 Haitian Earthquake:

Magnitude 7.0 Depth 8 miles

100,000 deaths 1989 Loma Preita Earthquake:

Magnitude 6.9 Depth 12 miles

63 deaths

I found that the biggest difference in these earthquakes was the infrastructure in place to protect people: because of this I wanted to provide some post disaster relief for those whose homelands don’t have this protection in place.

“After an earthquake my first thoughts are of my family, I always want to be able to gather them and know everyone is okay”

“I remember the Haiti earthquake and made me see how lucky I was that even though we have earthquakes they aren’t so bad here”

“The dust in the air looked like fog when it had been such a nice day. I was definitely concerned about what I was breathing in.”

Sketching & Models Compact size and portability were important constraints, so when sketching and modeling we experimented with how best to pack the components into the kit.

One for One Like other products on the market my earthquake kit would be distributed in a one for one fashion. This means that for every one bought one would be donated for disaster relief elsewhere in the world.

Ideation & Sketching I wanted to explore forms that would emphasize the different aspects of the bottle. indicating not only that it was a water bottle but also insinuating that it doubles as a lantern. Other key aspects were the ability to keep the mouthpiece clean and to attatch the bottle to a backpack or bag.

Felted Home Goods w/ IN PROGRESS...

Developing regional fiber systems that build soil & protect the health of our biosphere.

Soil to Soil

Fibershed’s model is a Soil to Soil Model, this means striving to make products that come full circle back to the natural beginings of the materials they use and the waste they create.

Composting wool benefits the carbon cycle by increasing the amount of carbon rangeland can hold by close to 200%, and increases the overall health of the soil.

Ideation & Inspiration

Being able to meet the ranchers and animals helped me to connect with the material, furthering my investment in the feeling of comfort that wool inspires.

Much of my product inspiration came from visiting the farms that produced the wool. Many of their spaces were beautifuly decorated with lights and sculptures. Early on I wanted to use the wool to connect more modern shapes with a more natural material.

Later, after experimenting more with wool and the process of felting I felt that more organic forms beter emphasize the ephemeral qualities of wool.

Compostabilty Final Direction When it came to deciding my final direction I narrowed down the most important ideas that I wanted to pursue.

Creating an environment

Natural Comfort

Sketching In making design language decisions I wanted to draw inspiration from the natural environment that supports the Fibershed System.

Final Light Design & Models My final lights are intended to showcase the natural wool texture as well as to reuse material (light fixtures and scrap yarn) and to be easily compostable at the end of their useful life. The final pieces are in progress now, to be completed by May.
