RCIA: BUILDING THE CHURCH

SinceSeptember2021,sevenSMUstudentsgatheredwithmenearlyeverySundayfrom2-3:30PMattheNeuhoffCatholic StudentCenter.SomewereCatholic,otherswerenot,butallhadreachedouttomedesiringtolearnmoreaboutthe CatholicfaithandpossiblycompletetheirinitiationintoChristianity.ThisprocessofinitiatingpeopleintoChristianity, knownastheRiteofChristianInitiationforAdults(RCIA),isoneofthemostimportantworksofourministry.

Over thecourseoftheyear,wejourneyedtogetherthroughasystematicpresentationoftheChristianfaith.Amongother things,weexploredtheCatholicunderstandingofthehumancapacityforGod,God’srevelationofHimselftohumanity,the doctrineoftheHolyTrinity,apresentationofChrist’sone,holy,catholic,&apostolicChurch,thesevensacraments,God’s morallawasfoundinthe10Commandments,God’splanforsexuality,andCatholicsocialteaching.Astheyearwenton, thesesevenstudents—assistedbysponsors—startedtoconsiderthepossibilitythatwhattheCatholicChurchbelieves, teaches,andproclaimsisindeedrevealedbyGodandisworththetotalcommitmentofone’sheart,mind,soul,and strength.

RCIAisnotjustaboutintellectualformation.Whilethesestudentsencounteredthecontentofthefaith,theyalsowere introducedtoweeklyworshipofGodatSundayMass,todifferentformsofpersonalprayer,andtotheChristiancommunity throughservice,retreats,andfunactivitieswithourcampusministry.

AttheEasterVigil,thesestudentswerereceivedintotheChurch,confirmed,and/ormadetheirfirstHolyCommunion. NowthattheyhavereceivedtheSacramentsofInitiation,thesestudentswillcontinueto“putonChrist”(cf.Romans13:14) astheyjourneytowardheavenasmembersofChrist’sChurch.
