In October, four members of our nursing leadership team had the opportunity to attend the Magnet Conference in Denver, Colorado. Heather Telford, Amber Mazurek, Elaine Schrutt and Kristen Parisi attended the three-day information-filled conference. There were over 10,000 nurses in attendance from around the world and the Kenmore Mercy Hospital team was able to bring back a lot of information on best practices in nursing. Some of the topics included: • reverse mentoring • social media communication platform • reducing c-diff rates through patient and family education • peer review • improving nurse satisfaction and patient outcomes • focus on communication, culture and feedback • information on our 2021 Magnet document At the December Shared Governance Committee meeting, many of these topics were discussed with the group. The 2019 Magnet Conference will be held in Orlando, Florida. There will be an opportunity for clinical nurses to attend. Stay tuned for more information and let your manager know if you have an interest in attending.

“Great Catch” Makes A Difference for Patients Thank you to registered nurse Victoria McDonald from 2 South/2 East for her questioning attitude and willingness to speak up when something doesn’t seem quite right. Victoria noticed that an antiseizure medication was ordered and an antibiotic was sent instead. She followed up and obtained the correct medication. A special thank you to Victoria for her great attention to detail and having a questioning attitude.

MIDAS OCCURRENCE REMINDERS: • When entering information, it needs to be as thorough as possible with details. Be sure to complete all sections. Some areas have multiple choices that can be selected. An example would be contributing factors for a patient fall. President & CEO Walt Ludwig, nurse manager Mary Hojnacki, RN, and director of Quality & Patient Safety Laura Verbanic awarded Victoria McDonald.

The Great Catch Program highlights “great catches” and recognizes associates for preventing errors that could cause injury to a patient. This program has helped to improve safety of our patients and associates.

Medical Staff Awards Two Associates Congratulations to Cheryl Tumia, RN, on 3 East, and Kathy Kanaley, patient representative, who recently received the Medical Staff’s Associate of the Year Award. Cheryl has been employed at Kenmore Mercy Hospital for 27 years. During that time she worked on 3 West as a certified nurse attendant, 2 North a clinical nurse assistant and 2 Center/3 South as an LPN.

Reminders

• Remember to enter time of occurrence for accuracy. • All fields need to be complete based on the event type, utilize the tabs to complete that section. • If there is a witness enter name of employee, physician or “other.” • Outcome – what happened to the patient as a result of this occurrence, there is a drop down with various choices. If you select other, enter in comments what you mean by “other.” • If you can identify any suggestions for improvement when entering the occurrence, write them in that section.

Kathy Kanaley and Cheryl Tumia (R) were awarded by Drs. Michael Gough and Eric Koch.

She advanced her nursing degree to a registered nurse and worked on 3 West for 22 years. She is presently a telemetry nurse on 3 East. Cheryl is known for her compassionate and caring attitude. She is presently a palliative care champion and visits community organizations and educates people about advance directives, palliative care and MOLST forms. She mentors and precepts new staff. Thank you Cheryl for being a valuable member of our nursing team and exhibiting the mission and values of Catholic Health. Kathy started her career at Kenmore Mercy in 1986 as a skilled nursing facility social worker. By 1990, she began taking on leadership roles in the hospital. In 2007, she became our patient representative, a very important role in helping our patient experience. She is a strong patient and family advocate and a valuable resource to medical, nursing and ancillary staff for patient’s problems and concerns. Kathy is also an active member of the Palliative Care committee, encouraging patients and community members to complete their advance directives. She initiated the Grievance Committee, leads the Patient Advisory Committee, led the In Demand language interpretation initiative, and developed the FAST team.

• Remember that occurrences are to track adverse events that happen or could potentially happen. Responses and suggestions should be constructive, rather than “finger pointing.” We all have the patient’s best interest in mind. • Great catches should be entered in the Midas database. This will assist in identifying areas that could potentially become an occurrence. • Occurrences should be completed timely so that the information is as accurate as possible. We want to work together to maintain and enhance our quality of care for our patients. If you have any questions, please call Diane Gelose in Quality & Patient Safety (447-6118). CODE CART REMINDER All code carts need to have a lock on the pharmacy drawer before sending them down to SPD for processing.
