CJC CONGRATULATES THE CLASS OF 2019
The Class of 2019 did themselves and Catholic Junior College (CJC) proud through achieving commendable results in the 2019 GCE A-Level examination. CJC continued to attain valued-added performance and commendable distinction rates in the various A-level subjects. Many students achieved their academic goals and will go on to apply for reputable universities and institutes of higher learning.
Mrs Phyllis Lim, Principal of CJC, congratulated the Class of 2019 on their good results and encouraged them to forge ahead to seize new learning opportunities, expand their horizons, and continue their journey as Thinkers with a Mission and Leaders with a Heart. During the release of the results, Mrs Lim said, ‘the commendable results our Class of 2019 achieved is a culmination of two years of persistent effort and focus. You worked hard not just at the individual level but as a team at class, CCA (Co-Curricular Activity) and at the House level, helping each other to hone your strengths, overcome challenges and achieve your goals. We are proud of your growth mindset, determination and sense of mission. You were able to balance your academic, CCA, student leadership, and service learning commitments well. This is reflective of your desire to lead and serve in truth and love.’
Mr Tan Jek Suan, Vice-Principal added, ‘our warmest congratulations to the Class of 2019 on your good results. May all of you continue to lead and serve with a positive impact on others wherever life takes you. Maintain your links with the College and CJC alumni. Aakash Dubey S/O Anil Kumar
Aakash is an intelligent, determined, and conscientious individual. Throughout the two years he was in CJC, he applied critical thinking in his studies and consistently topped the class and cohort in many College examinations. With a strong aptitude for Mathematics and Science, it was unsurprising that he attained the A*STAR Science Award in 2018 and had it extended for 2019. His stint at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology spurred on his passion in scientific research and development where he successfully completed the Student Research Attachment Programme. Recognised by the college for his outstanding academic performance, Aakash was awarded the Archbishop Scholarship in 2018 and 2019, one of the most prestigious scholarships CJC has to offer.
As the President of the Environmental Science Society, his Co-Curricular Activity, he oversaw the planning and execution of various projects and was a mentor to his juniors. With a genuine interest in environmental science, he was one of the delegates who represented Singapore at the Asean Plus Three Youth Environment Forum in 2018, organised by the National Environmental Agency. He learnt strategies to manage environmental issues such as climate change and several of his innovative ideas were well-received. Highly motivated and unassuming, Aakash has a sincere dedication to excellence that would certainly serve him well in his future endeavours, including an aspiration to pursue Computer Science.
CJC CONGRATULATES THE CLASS OF 2019
Hew Zi Heng
Zi Heng is a rare gem who was able to manage his studies, co-curricular activities, and other aspects of life exceptionally well. Zi Heng exuded a great sense of intrinsic motivation and this propelled him towards academic excellence by seeking out opportunities to learn and grow whenever he could. He was the proud recipient of the Singapore Police Force (SPF) Book Prize in 2019. The SPF Book Prize is awarded to students with excellence academic results, strong leadership in their CCA and significant contributions to the community.
Besides participating in numerous Model United Nations and other notable conferences since secondary school and continuing to do so at the JC level, Zi Heng also served as an emcee at school events even though this meant long rehearsals after school. As President of the Oratorical Society, Zi Heng made the effort to understand his members well and would always motivate and encourage them to perform to their maximum potential. He led his club with the firm belief that the process and people are as important as the outcome.
Keen to give back to society and to seek self improvement, Zi Heng participated in an academic immersion and service learning trip to India in 2018. Zi Heng was also an active volunteer during his spare time, taking part in activities such as the Citi-YMCA Youth for Causes Programme where he gained invaluable experiences interacting with various groups in the community. Zi Heng truly internalised the growth mindset and made it his own.
Ng Le Yang, Owen
Owen is a perceptive and keen learner who strives to maintain high standards in all subjects, and consistently produced work of a commendable standard. He showed his immense capacity for analytical and logical thought, raising intelligent questions in class, and seeking opportunities to learn independently. He balanced his studies with non-academic pursuits such as participating in an Outward Bound Singapore land and sea expedition, and represented the college in the National School Games for Canoeing and National Junior Canoeing Championships, where he displayed strength, resilience and sportsmanship. Owen also served his College community. With his outgoing personality and strong interpersonal skills, he was selected to be Orientation Group Leader and Assistant Faction Head for the JC1 Orientation. He was also instrumental in fostering class unity as Pastoral Care Councillor, putting his charisma and persuasive leadership to good use in order to rally the support of his class. Furthermore, Owen also showed his care for the wider community through his active participation in a class-initiated Service Learning Project focusing on children with special needs.
Yee Mon Tun
Mon Tun has the grit and determination to give her best once she sets her mind on a goal. Determined to learn beyond the confines of the classroom, she broadened her understanding of various subjects by making the most of learning opportunities and trips organised by CJC, including the Ignite Residential Programme as well as the REACH Cambridge and Vietnam academic trips. Mon Tun was also a dedicated member of the Drama Society and conducted extensive research on the character she took on for an in-house production. Beyond acting, she explored her interest in theatre by taking on the role of stage manager for the Drama Society production during CJ Celebrates. On top of her contributions at the College level, she also gave back to society, focusing in particular on young persons and the elderly.
CJC CONGRATULATES THE CLASS OF 2019
Papattarada Apithanangsiri
Papattarada is a resilient and independent learner who required minimal supervision by her tutors. She possesses the mental agility to grasp and apply concepts easily and synthesise information, producing high quality work that earned her a consistent placing on the Principal’s Honour Roll for internal examinations. She also represented CJC in numerous competitions, such as the American Mathematics Competition and Singapore Mathematical Olympiad, where she won various accolades that are a testament to her keen mind. With the initiative and enthusiasm to apply her learning to authentic contexts, Papattarada took up a work attachment stint with the Department of Industrial Systems Engineering and Management at the National University of Singapore, where she had the opportunity to gain first-hand experiences in Data Sciences.
A creative individual, Papattarada was a committed member in the college Choir. Her passion for this art form motivated her to train intensively and she represented CJC at the Singapore Youth Festival in 2019; CJC eventually clinched the Certificate of Distinction. As Section Leader, she brought out the best in her members and led by example. Her amicability and sincerity allow her to enjoy good rapport with her peers and teachers, and win their trust and support.
Joshua James Chong
Well-liked by his peers, Joshua also stood out for his integrity and character. He was entrusted with the class funds as Treasurer, and his easy-going demeanour brought life and humour to the classroom. His positive influence on those around him cannot be understated; his refusal to shy away from challenges which some may deem insurmountable, and the effort to give his utmost best in whatever he does, is an inspiration to his peers and teachers alike.
Lee Weng Heng, Jon
Jon pursued excellence in his studies and displayed an eagerness to explore different strategies to make his learning more effective. He made good progress and achieved a commendable standard in all his subjects, but continued to strive to outdo himself. Jon’s intellectual curiosity drove him to look beyond the GCE A-Level curriculum to learn authentically. As he is reliable and sincere, his peers looked to him for support and saw him as a role model, as evinced from him being unanimously nominated for the Edusave Character Award in 2019.
Jon sought an active and balanced life in CJC, serving as the Secretary of the Environmental Science Society, his Co-Curricular Activity. In the process, he attended the Singapore Environmental Action and Leadership Programme organised by the Yale-NUS College, which challenged his assumptions about environmentalism and broadened his perspective of environmental sustainability. Besides, his compassion towards others and sense of community involvement grew in the course of his efforts to serve the wider community; he worked with the Catholic Aids Response Effort for a class-based Service Learning Project (SLP), and attended the Ignite Residential Programme held at the National University of Singapore’s University Town to pitch and present proposals that address the concerns of the stakeholders he came into contact with during his class SLP. Jon was also selected to be part of an Overseas Service Learning Project to Vietnam, where he did much heavy lifting to construct tiling for a school, on top of teaching English and Mathematics to the local children.
CJC CONGRATULATES THE CLASS OF 2019
Ronan Siah
Ronan genuinely enjoys learning for its own sake; his eagerness to learn was evident in the classroom, where he drove discussions conducive for learning and frequently sought deeper understanding of issues and concepts in a crossdisciplinary manner. For instance, during the Geographical Investigation Field Trip to Kuantan, Malaysia, his efforts saw him and his group give presentations that showed the ability to make complex connections between theory and practice. Always keen to explore new learning opportunities, Ronan was accepted into the Singapore Convention on Mediation internship programme in 2019 where he served as a youth ambassador to foreign delegates, and he also participated in a competition organised by the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), the SUSS Analytics and Visualization Challenge 2019. His team emerged third in the pre-tertiary and tertiary education division.
As the 2019 CJC Arts Valedictorian, his stellar academic performance was balanced with his active contributions to his community and society at large. A passionate advocate for environmental sustainability, he served as Publicity Head of his Co-Curricular Activity (CCA), Environmental Science Society, organising publicity efforts to rally support for various environmental programmes initiated by the CCA, including Earth Day events and the collaboration with the Public Utilities Board Singapore to raise awareness on water conservation issues. He was awarded the Harvard Prize Book (Singapore) 2019/20 award as a testament to his efforts to inspire others to care for the environment and volunteer in the community.
Beyond school commitments, Ronan also participated in external community service programmes such as educating the children on a local heritage tour as part of the Youth Corps Singapore, and raising funds for Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Young Men’s Christian Association Flag Day. He also frequently volunteered at his secondary school as senior trainer in the National Police Cadet Corps Unit, to train and develop new cadet leaders. Overall, Ronan’s strong values and principles in life guide his decisions and actions, and he embodies the CJC ethos of mission-centred, sustainable service to the wider community.
Stacy Lee Sze Ying
Stacy’s commitment to her academic studies paid off with her excellent results at the GCE A-Level examinations in 2019. The epitome of a diligent student, Stacy would set clear goals and devise detailed plans with deadlines to achieve them. This enabled her to cope with the A-Level curriculum remarkably well and her intellectual promise was further recognized when she became the only student in CJC to pursue two subjects at the H3 level.
As the Vice-President of the Oratorical Society, Stacy modelled the belief of doing what she expects others to do. She set high standards for her members and put into practice her strong organizational skills. One of Stacy’s numerous accolades was being one of only two students selected from all the junior colleges in Singapore to be part of a debate panel in The Straits Times Education Forum in April 2019.
A Thinker with a Mission and a Leader with a Heart, Stacy reached out to her friends and often spent her breaks revising with them, exchanging pointers and ways to improve, so as to consolidate and enhance their learning.
CJC CONGRATULATES THE CLASS OF 2019
PRANAV GHOSH
Pranav approaches challenges with enthusiasm, seeing them as opportunities for learning and growth. This has no doubt contributed to his steady academic improvement. He also stood out as a confident and articulate speaker. Coupled with his passion for public speaking, he was a formidable opponent in the various competitions he participated in. In the 2018 Plain English Speaking Award competition, he was one of the top seven speakers in the nation for the relevant category. Additionally, in the 2018 Model United Nations and the 2019 Future Economic Forum, he was named Outstanding Delegate twice, and recognised for Best Diplomacy and Negotiation in the former.
Pranav’s leadership ability was also honed when he stepped up as Social Welfare Officer in the Executive Committee of his Co-Curricular Activity, Oratorical Society. This was on top of his role as Sports Leader in his class. More importantly, even in the absence of a leadership role or title, Pranav applied himself meaningfully to his class’ Service Learning Project, which focused on the elderly. Though he initially faced challenges in communicating with the elderly patients as most of them spoke Mandarin, his creative use of gestures and sincerity to serve won them over.
The college sends warmest congratulations to the following students on their sterling performance at the 2019 GCE A-Level examinations.
Representing the Humanities faculty, we have:

CJC CELEBRATES THE A-LEVEL RESULTS OF THE CLASS OF 2020
Top Performing Science Class of 2020, 2T32
Though 2020 was a year of unprecedented challenges brought about by Covid-19, the Class of 2020 did themselves and the College proud and achieved excellence at the 2020 GCE A-Level examinations. CJC continued to achieve commendable distinctions in different A-Level subjects and value-added results for our students. The College is proud to have many CJCians realising their aspirations and qualifying for institutes of higher learning both locally and overseas.
Mrs Phyllis Lim, Principal of CJC, congratulated the Class of 2020 on their good results. She said, ‘your cohort had to contend with unforeseen key challenges such as full home-based learning, but you demonstrated determination, resilience, teamwork and class spirit to overcome these challenge and achieve commendable results. We salute you for remaining steadfast in the midst of challenges and for never losing sight of your goals and aspirations’. Besides achieving good academic results, she noted that many students were able to juggle their academic, CCA, leadership and community service commitments as well as provide care and support for their classmates during challenging times. This reflected their all-round leadership development. She urged the Class of 2020 to continue learning, leading, and serving as Thinkers with a Mission and Leaders with a Heart. Mrs Poon Wai Chin, Vice-Principal/Academic added, ‘our heartiest congratulations to the Class of 2020 on your good results. We know that the human spirit is always stronger and more resilient than we think, and your results have proven that. The relentless desire to excel and reach out drives us to never settle for second best, but to keep going, looking out for each other as we do so. I wish you the very best in life as you continue to find ways to serve and lead with heart and passion.’
The College extends its heartfelt appreciation to all teachers, administrative staff, parents, the School Management Committee and the alumni for the support, guidance and encouragement of the students throughout their educational journey in CJC. May God continue to bless our Class of 2020 with wisdom and grace as they take flight as Thinkers and Leaders and make a positive impact on society.
The College celebrates the outstanding achievements of the following CJCians who exemplify the traits of a Thinker with a Mission and Leader with a Heart.
CJC CELEBRATES THE A-LEVEL RESULTS OF THE CLASS OF 2020
Karel Nareswara Devananda
Karel has always been fascinated by language and its impact on the world, and the study of language has been an enlightening and electrifying world for him. Besides his passion for the arts, the awards Karel received in 2019 affirm his rigour of thought in both the Arts and Science subjects. These accolades include: Top Overall Performer of the JC1 cohort at the Mid-Year Examinations and Year-end Promotional Examinations, Top Performer in ELL (Mid-Year Examination and Promotional Examination) as well as Mathematics (Promotional Examination).
The trust that his tutors have in Karel’s sense of responsibility and self-management is also seen in him being selected for the Overseas History Academic Trip to Vietnam in 2019 and the English REACHCambridge trip in 2020, though the latter was cancelled due to the pandemic. In 2019, he also represented CJC in ministerial talks such as the S Rajaratnam Lecture and leadership conferences such as the St. Joseph’s Institution Convention and the Catholic Education Conference. As an intuitively reflective leader, Karel thinks deeply about his contributions to the Student Council, and actively seeks opportunities for self-improvement and the improvement of the CCA. He exceeded the expectations for a Vice-President, and his influence has gained him a strong following; his peers respect him for his guidance and regard him as a role model of effective leadership.
Tan Yi Ping, Zoe
Zoe is a vocal and energetic student well-suited for CJC’s talent development programme, the Ignite programme. It nurtured curiosity and a mindset of challenging conventional ways of doing things. Zoe has also developed greater independence as she frequently had to conduct self-directed research for in-class presentations.
Zoe was also a member of the Guitar Ensemble, where she served as a Section Leader. Throughout her time in office, Zoe focused on building trust between members and forging meaningful relationships so that the whole ensemble could perform well together. For their efforts, the team attained a Distinction for the Singapore Youth Festival (Arts Presentation) in 2019. Zoe always took up opportunities to stretch herself and to serve others, and to this end, she joined other student activities in CJC. This includes a second Co-Curricular Activity, Music Ministry, and she also participated in planning Genesis sessions, a platform for students of CJC to remain in touch with their faith. As a Catholic, Zoe also readily volunteered in events such as volunteering at the Church of St Ignatius for Catholic Education Sunday, and helped out during the Commencement of School Year Mass.
Zoe also took part in the Work Attachment and Shadowing Programme during her time at CJC, working in hospitality at Serena Spa at the Marriott Hotel. By interacting with the therapists, she observed how their work relieved stress and pain for their clients. This opportunity dovetailed with Zoe’s aspiration to pursue further education in the healthcare sector.
CJC CELEBRATES THE A-LEVEL RESULTS OF THE CLASS OF 2020
Wo Junwei, Darryl
Darryl is an independent, compassionate learner who welcomes feedback and is able to think critically. He is open to criticism and is able to turn it into motivation for future self-improvement. Darryl chose the unconventional path of repeating his first year in junior college, demonstrating astute self-awareness, and this decision was pivotal in helping him achieve academic excellence. He went on to receive the Principal’s Honour Roll Award for the 2019 Mid-Year Examination and 2019 Promotional Examination.
Darryl juggled his academic commitments and sporting ambitions. He was elected the Vice-Captain of CJC’s Floorball team in 2018, and he was also elected to be an Executive Committee member of another Floorball club, Blacks Salibandy. Besides his focus on self-development, he is also committed to helping others. Apart from the class Local Service Learning Project with Catholic Aids Response Effort and the National Heritage Board, he was also selected for the Overseas Service Learning Programme to Chiang Mai. He was appointed Team Welfare Head and Safety Leader for the trip due to the passion and meticulousness he demonstrated during the pre-trip group meetings. In 2020, Darryl also volunteered to be an Orientation Group Leader and he showed resilience when the programme was overhauled to adhere to new social distancing rules.
Steffi Lim En Qi
Steffi is a self-directed and goal-oriented learner. Adaptable to changing circumstances, she is not easily daunted by difficulty. She keeps her targets in mind and works towards them with diligence and determination.
In her Co-Curricular Activity (CCA), Tennis, she was observed to be nurturing and charitable towards her teammates, often investing her time to take care of their wellbeing. Although she did not take on an official leadership role in the CCA, she played no small part in motivating the team to give their best in training sessions and tournaments. This leadership ability was also evident in her role as Assistant Home Tutorial Councillor (AHTC) of her class. As AHTC, Steffi recognised and appreciated the strengths and contributions of her peers, and prioritized serving the needs of the class.
Steffi was the leader of her class’s Local Service Learning Project in 2019. For this project, the class decided to partner with Singapore Association for Mental Health and interact with their beneficiaries to find out more about their needs. As AHTC, Steffi planned and facilitated an interactive session with the beneficiaries. She oversaw the budget, ensured effective administration, and carried out a smooth and meaningful programme. She led by example, stepping out of her comfort zone to converse with the beneficiaries and listen to their experiences of mental health challenges.

Ng Him Hean
Him Hean is an independent and inquisitive learner, who always asked questions in class, and willingly listened to the opinions of others with an open mind. His pursuit of excellence is shown through his academic accolades, such as the Overall Top Performer of the JC1 cohort, and the Good Progress Award from the Ministry of Education in 2019.
Him Hean’s talent in the arts is most prominently seen in his ability to sustain critical analysis on an issue and negotiate complexities and ambiguities. Intrigued by what he learnt in the classroom, he often conducted further research beyond what is taught for the A-Level curriculum and found ways to apply his learning to issues in the real world. His qualification to read Economics at the H3 level is further proof of his aptitude in demonstrating original thinking and drawing intelligent connections across divergent concepts and ideas.
Him Hean’s involvement in College activities foregrounds the vibrant College life he experienced. He was a member of the Modern Dance Society from 2019-2020 and served as an Orientation Group Leader (OGL) during the JC1 Orientation Programme in 2020. Being part of a Co-Curricular Activity that places a premium on performance results and perfection has trained Him Hean to be even more resilient, and to find satisfaction in pushing himself even harder than before. Such traits served him well as an OGL, when the team of OGLs was faced with the challenge of adapting to the changing demands of the programme due to new restrictions introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ong Wei, Dillon
Dillon was an Executive Committee member of his Co-Curricular Activity, Symphonic Band. A nurturing leader, he always strove to improve the band’s technical skills, and lift their morale. He has also shown growth as a confident communicator able to convey complicated ideas succinctly to his bandsmen. Joining the Symphonic Band in CJC also led to Dillon actively pursuing his passion for music; he is teaching himself to write and rearrange music, and also runs a small channel on YouTube. He feels most fulfilled knowing that his music can empower people and move them out of hard places.
In addition, Dillon was part of an academic trip organised by CJC, which included an Overseas Service Learning component. With his team, he actively sought to foster relationships between the visiting delegation and the Thai children from the orphanage through extending practical help, and by pulling off a carnival that was a brand new experience for many of them. Overall, Dillon served others with an open mind and was genuinely invested in the betterment of their lives.
Jeremy Sim Wen Ze
Jeremy is a hardworking young man who constantly sought to improve in his studies. He was meticulous and detailed in his work, and took pride in handing up neat and organised assignments. He managed his time well and was an independent learner. He was able to voice his opinions or raise doubts in class to facilitate his own learning and thus benefited others in the process. He likes solving problems and has an interest in how laws and theories are formulated in the Sciences. With his drive and passion for his subjects, he has potential to do well academically.
Jeremy was interested in sports and community service during his time in college. As an active member of the Basketball Co-curricular Activity, he often led his peers in drills and encouraged them to try their best. He was a good team player and strove to train well to build up the strength of his team. Having a heart for the less fortunate, he joined his classmates in a Local Service Learning Project. His class organised a befriending session with the elderly at Toa Payoh Care Corner, and for which he was in the sub-committee in charge of planning and purchasing refreshments for the seniors.

Sim Jun Hong, Ryan
True to the CJC vision, Ryan pursued excellence in learning and living. Ryan is a selfdirected learner who sought every opportunity to extend his learning beyond the classroom. With steely determination, he set clear academic goals amidst the disruption brought about by Home-Based Learning, and topped his cohort by achieving one of the highest rank points in CJC for his Continual Assessment 2 in 2020.
Ryan also set a stellar example by being extremely disciplined with his training schedule for Swimming, his Co-Curricular Activity. He was also a club swimmer. He often swam at 5am before heading to school and travelled back to the swimming pool for the training at the end of a school day. Consequently, he obtained the 3rd place for individual 100m Freestyle, 4th place for Freestyle and Medley Relay, as well as 5th place for the individual 200m Freestyle at the 2019 National School Games. He also received the Singapore School Sports Council Award in 2019 and the Edusave EAGLES award in 2020, which is given to students who demonstrate leadership qualities, service to community and schools, excellence in non-academic activities, and good conduct.
Sung Yi Wen, Ella
A developer at heart, Ella takes pride in her improvement and growth, as well as that which she can bring about in others. It gives her great satisfaction knowing that she helped and brought good cheer to others. During classroom discussions, she was able to pick up relevant information from good articles for Economics, contributing to a dialogic classroom. Consequently, both Ella and her peers were able to take an inter-disciplinary approach to learning, as seen from their analysis of the confluence of economic and political considerations that impinge on everyday issues.
Ella’s sense of responsibility to the community and her awareness of cross cultural relations manifested in her involvement in community service. As a member of her Co-Curricular Activity, Interact Club, she participated in numerous projects, including helping out at St Luke’s ElderCare and hospitals. In doing so, she challenged herself to connect with the less fortunate and empathised with their plight. This was also the case for her class Local Service Learning Project with Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled where she interacted with the elderly, bringing entertainment and good cheer to many of them. Besides, her active participation in the CJC-organised Overseas Service Learning Programme 2019 in Vietnam also showed her consideration for the children in the village school; inasmuch as she shared her knowledge of English and of her culture, she also served with an open mind and learnt about their culture and experiences.
Tracy Kumala Putra
Tracy takes pride in her work and her good study strategies were evinced by her consistently excellent academic results. Tracy was the overall top performer for H1 Geography both at the Mid-Year and End-of-Year Examinations in 2019, and earned a place on the Principal’s Honour Roll. In the same year, she was also awarded the Ministry of Education’s Edusave Merit Bursary and the Edusave Certificate of Academic Achievement.
Tracy also actively contributed to both the College and the wider community. As part of the Film, Sound and Video Society, her photos have been featured on various College platforms and she collaborated with her peers on video projects that enlivened College life and documented important events. Additionally, Tracy also contributed to the wider community by volunteering with Schoolhouse International, donating used mattresses and toys to orphans from disadvantaged backgrounds in Indonesia.

Gerald Lim Da Xiang
Gerald enlivened classroom discussions with questions that showed his ability to think deeply about the topic at hand. He was quick to understand complex concepts, and could apply them to novel contexts with ease. Gerald was also consistently diligent, and his tutors commended him for being a role model to his peers in this regard.
Gerald served as the Assistant Home Tutorial Councillor of his class, a role which he undertook with responsibility and enthusiasm. He showed grace under pressure while leading his class to plan a Local Service Learning Project in collaboration with the Assisi Hospice. His care for his community was also seen in his choice of Co-Curricular Activity, Interact Club. Demonstrating a strong sense of empathy and consideration for disadvantaged or neglected members of the community, Gerald and his peers served the less fortunate through various projects which saw them interacting with groups including children in need, and the elderly.
Eqsha P Nair
During her time in CJC, Eqsha grasped opportunities to challenge herself and broaden her thinking. She was part of the CJC Ignite Programme, a talent development programme aimed at developing critical thinkers and future-oriented leaders. Her good time management and study strategies contributed to her consistent performance at every examination. She won the Outstanding Academic Performance Award at the MidYear and Promotional Examinations in 2019.
A critical thinker and articulate speaker, Eqsha also represented CJC at the Pre-U Seminar 2019, ASEAN Day Dinner 2019, and two Focus Group Discussions where she interacted with various ministers, ambassadors and directors from different ministries. Eqsha was also one of the seven students in her cohort to be awarded the English Language and Linguistics Scholarship by the Ministry of Education (MOE), a prestigious award reserved for the very best students with a passion for and flair in the English Language. She thereby secured an internship with MOE’s English Language and Literature Branch, where she displayed the ability to negotiate complexities and ambiguities in her work.
Eqsha’s strength in leadership was evident in her contributions to CJC and her Co-Curricular Activity (CCA), Choir. She was a well-respected Section Leader commended by her CCA teachers for her ability to take charge of her section while making sure every member was well taken care of. Her contributions to her CCA were cited as significant in Choir’s achievement of a Certificate of Distinction at the 2019 Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation (SYF) – the highest honour at the SYF. Eqsha was also hand-picked to be an Orientation Group Leader in 2020, where she rose to every challenge and stepped out of her comfort zone to make the best out of the situation for the incoming JC1s amidst the pandemic.

Teow Eau Xin
Eau Xin’s love for Chemistry and her dream of pursuing forensic science gave her the drive to work hard. She critically considered issues from different perspectives and this was evident from the relevant and insightful questions she posed. An independent learner, she managed her time well and was very clear about the progress she made, as well as areas for improvement. She would also actively troubleshoot problems and this was observed in her role as the Class Treasurer and Secretary in 2020; Eau Xin maintained a meticulous record of the class’ expenses, and devised a system for the collection of funds that was easy for her classmates to follow.
Eau Xin was also one of the National Day Parade Commanders in 2019, and she put in hours of practice to ensure that CJC’s National Day Observance Ceremony ran smoothly. Her contributions to her community extended beyond CJC. In a class-initiated Local Service Learning Project, she volunteered at the Assisi Hospice at the Mount Alvernia Hospital. She helped to care for the critically ill patients at the ward, and interacted with the elderly through games and activities. She served with an open mind, and was considerate and empathetic towards others in the community.
Billy Muliorahardjo
Billy is a disciplined, motivated, and consistent learner who puts in his best effort to achieve his goals. His critical thinking was evident in his assignments, and he submitted work that showed insight, lucidity, and clear organization. With an analytical mind, Billy was able to understand concepts well and apply them widely. To stretch his abilities, the subject he offered at H3 level was Semiconductor Physics and Devices. He also cut his teeth at the Australian Mathematics Competition and Mathematical Olympiad, developing finely-honed problem-solving skills under pressure.
Though Billy did not have more hours in a day, he still managed to juggle two CoCurricular Activities. He was a dedicated member of the Volleyball team. Also, he served as the President of the Music Ministry, a key contributor to school events aligned with the College’s Catholic ethos. His leadership abilities were also recognised as he was selected to be an Orientation Group Leader in 2020, and he was designated Overall-In-Charge for the Overseas Service Learning Programme in Vietnam in 2019. Billy’ s track record for service shows that he is keenly aware of the responsibilities of being a member of the community, and to that end, participates actively in programmes that foster understanding between people from different socio-cultural and religious backgrounds.
CJC CELEBRATES THE A-LEVEL RESULTS OF THE CLASS OF 2020
Tan Shean Yin, Jolene
Jolene takes pride in evaluating an issue from different perspectives, and has especial interest in Literature for its poetic exposure to critical insight on relevant issues. Jolene’s love for reading is evident in the rigour of her writing. During her time in CJC, Jolene also had a number of stretch opportunities to engage with other inquisitive minds, sharpening her global awareness and cross-cultural skills. She attended two prestigious conferences: the “Building A Society of Opportunities Together” Community Conversation and the 2019 S Rajaratnam Lecture. Jolene also actively participated in the 2019 STEP Sunburst Youth Camp with almost 150 other young people from across Asia. This week-long programme saw Jolene collaborate with delegates from 13 different countries to enrich her cultural understanding of Singapore and other parts of the world.
Jolene finds great satisfaction in nurturing others and derives great joy from uplifting others. In her journey as the President of the Student Council (2019-2020), she has made tremendous effort to be worthy of her appointment. She has been an exemplary role model for seeking self-improvement, and in recognising her peers’ strengths and talents, edified them to grow into their roles and maximise their potential. Jolene’s involvement in community service provides further evidence of her consideration for others, as she goes beyond her assigned duties to give with open hands. After volunteering with her class at the Care Corner Student Care Centre (Admiralty) in 2019, she volunteered weekly with TOUCH Young Arrows to provide academic coaching and plan activities for primary school children from disadvantaged backgrounds
Pavarisa Tongboriboon
Pavarisa, who prefers to be known as Net, is an avid learner who derives a sense of achievement when she is able to internalise and master different concepts and skills. Net enjoys analysing and interpreting mathematical questions in real-world contexts and took the initiative to take part in various competitions such as the Australian Mathematics Competition, Singapore Mathematical Olympiad, Singapore Mathematical Society Essay Competition, and Statistics Report Competition. Through these competitions, she has gained broad exposure and training, which engendered even greater passion for the subject.
Net pursues her interests tirelessly and her intrinsic motivation to learn and excel has served her well. She was the top student overall in the 2019 Promotional Examinations, where she ranked first for all four of her H2 subjects. Not content to rest on her laurels, Net participated in the Anatomy Challenge hosted by Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine in 2019 to stretch her abilities, and thereby gained insight into the medical profession. Additionally, Net represented CJC during the 12th International Youth Forum Grand Ceremony 2020. After hearing from Nobel Prize winners and other eminent scientists, Net has her heart set on using her strengths to make significant contributions to research in the medical field.
Matthew Elmer Ken
Matthew is intellectually curious and in his time in CJC, did research beyond the syllabus to explore concepts and ideas at a deeper level. His good learning attitude and ability was recognised and he was offered H3 Economics. Given his experience of learning alongside his peers with diverse backgrounds and nationalities, he also broadened his knowledge of differing perspectives and honed his ability to express his ideas clearly during lessons.
Matthew was also a member of the Class Management Committee serving as the Secretary of the class. He often went beyond the scope of his duty as a scribe and administrator of the class. For instance, Matthew was a point of contact for the foreign students in the class who were staying at a hostel together. He proactively helped to troubleshoot issues and honed effective communication skills. This was also observed in his contributions to his class’ Local Service Learning Project – an innovative project to help the school community rebuild the school hostel building into a student learning hub – Matthew voluntarily presented the ideas from the class to the CJC staff as part of an analysis of needs on the ground. Matthew’s highly logical and analytical mind, humility in learning and seeking improvement, and genuine desire to serve others were some of his good attributes that demonstrated his growth as a Thinker with a Mission, Leader with a Heart.

HALOGEN FOUNDATION NATIONAL YOUNG LEADER AWARD 2020
Written by Muthukumarasamy Vishal, 2T08 and Sharanya Ramesh, 2T19
There is a saying that leadership is the extraordinary ability to get extraordinary achievements from ordinary people. This is consistent with our college’s mission of developing Thinkers with a Mission, and Leaders with a Heart. Both Emma Lai Oi Yeng (2T26, Class of 2021), and Chua Ann Teng (2T05, Class of 2020), have exemplified the values of the college’s mission, leading to them being named among Halogen Foundation’s Top 50 National Young Leader Awardees in Singapore.
A LEADER WITH A VISION OF EMPOWERMENT
‘Be the change you want to see’ - I especially enjoy this quote because my purpose as a leader is to embody it.
My name is Nazra Shahnaz, and I am a J2 student (2T19) from Catholic Junior College. I was nominated for the National Young Leader Award (NYLA) in March this year, and I never thought the 6-month journey would be one of the most lifechanging experiences for me. It taught me how to carry myself as a leader, about the importance of communication, how to resolve a conflict in ideas and many more attributes I now hold close to my heart in being a leader.
My favourite phase of the award was the Leadership Trials. Though it was through a screen, I was able to meet many promising youth with such amazing ideas to bring to the table and this really amplified the faith I have in my peers. Through both the glory and shortfalls of my team, I was able to learn the importance of planning ahead, facilitating open communication, leveraging on the strengths of each team member to create a better outcome, and this shaped me to better prepare for the rest of my award journey and leadership opportunities to come. Meeting change-makers in a common place, finding middle ground with different inputs, and listening to the brilliant ideas everyone had helped me realise that I am not alone in my goals of creating positive change, and that leaders can better support one another through collaboration.
CJC has gifted me many leadership experiences; my teachers saw promise in me and wanted to help me develop it. My tenure as President of CJC Choir greatly shaped my leadership as navigating through the restrictions of the volatile COVID-19 situation left my team and I faced with many hurdles in planning and executing Choir sessions. Through the setbacks, we were able to learn to plan and brainstorm better and as a leader, I learnt to communicate better. I found that one of a leader’s key purposes is to exude a spirit of enthusiasm and proactivity so as to keep morale and productivity up when times were tough. When I founded Shareducation, my goal was to help bridge the gap between students who had a headstart in their studies due to having access to tuition services, and those who did not have that luxury. This came from a place of understanding as I too, found myself in a similar situation growing up. But after NYLA, I realised that my cause is so much more than that. I empower others by teaching my beneficiaries to create goals and aspirations, and that no matter how big or small they may seem, they are valid. I empower my team of 30 volunteers by allowing them to make full use of all the resources available to create a bigger impact and serve the community.
For as far as my mind can reach, NYLA, Shareducation, and my leadership experiences in CJC have only taught me about my true purpose: to not just be a leader, but a servant leader. To think with a mission, and lead with a heart. To have a zest for life and a generous spirit in my leadership. I see my potential to serve, and regardless of the profession I pursue in the future, I would like to serve and change more lives. My hope for the future of youth is for more of us to find it in ourselves to step forward and build more inclusive societies. I am no perfect leader, but I am grateful that NYLA saw promise in me to do this.
Above all, having the honour to be a part of something as special as NYLA sparked a period of personal growth I never knew myself and the people I work with needed — and beyond the cameras, interviews and blue pantsuits, I’m grateful for that.

HARVARD PRIZE BOOK
The recipient of the Harvard Prize Book (Singapore) is a caring individual who has, over a sustained period of time, gone beyond the call of duty to perform acts of kindness and caring, and who may have influenced his or her peers or family members to do likewise.
Ronan Siah, CJC’s 2019 Arts Valedictorian, received the Harvard Prize Book (Singapore) 2019/20 award in recognition of his altruistic spirit. A long-standing award presented since 1910, the significance of the Harvard Prize Book lies in its support for and encouragement of students with notable promise of becoming service leaders who can inspire others to authentic and sustainable acts of kindness. Ronan’s achievement affirms his dedication to volunteering with the Youth Corps, YMCA, SPCA, and to serving as senior trainer in the NPCC at his alma mater, ACS (Barker). Addressing the distinguished guests and his peers at the Harvard Prize Book ceremony, Ronan also shared about caring for the environment, a cause he is deeply passionate about. We’re so proud of Ronan, whose qualities exemplify the College’s mission – every student becoming a Thinker with a Mission, Leader with a Heart – and immensely hopeful that the lives he has touched in CJC will galvanise others to extend the culture of care beyond CJC, to our wider community.
Kim Yu Ling (CJC Class of 2020), received the Harvard Prize Book (Singapore) 2020/21 award.
Yu Ling has been commended for pursuing her interest in healthcare as a long-term volunteer with St Luke’s ElderCare and initiating a research project under the yearlong InterHealth Innovators Programme from June 2019 to June 2020, in collaboration with the Centre for Innovation in Healthcare (National University Health Systems). Apart from submitting her work to conferences, Yu Ling’s data-driven inquiry culminated in her project team’s staunch advocacy for proper warm up exercises to stave off knee injuries. Yu Ling has a stellar record of extending her involvement in her Co-Curricular Activity, Interact Club, and the Overseas Service Learning Programme to Chiang Mai, to additional self-sourced initiatives. Her Home Tutor experienced this firsthand when she chanced upon Yu Ling with a large bag of buns she had prepared to distribute to the migrant workers in her neighbourhood to show them that Singaporeans stand in solidarity with them during the Covid-19 pandemic.
An exemplar of a CJC Thinker with a Mission, Leader with a Heart, Yu Ling has maximised the opportunities she has to do good. Her story is a timely clarion call for such a time as this, as our commitment to service and our pandemic-stricken community is put to the test.

CHEMISTRY OLYMPIAD 2021
Congratulations to Loh Ming Cheng (2T08) and Wee Kiat Ming Nicholas (2T15), our Bronze medallists at the 32nd Chemistry Olympiad! This is no mean feat as the content taught was beyond the H2 Chemistry syllabus, and required rigorous application of Chemistry concepts. Both Ming Cheng and Nicholas gained much from this experience, having signed up for the Chemistry Olympiad out of love for the subject and to challenge themselves. In the process, they both found that they developed a deeper love and appreciation for Chemistry, and that the experience strengthened their grasp of the H2 subject. We are immensely proud and hope that this achievement encourages our JC1 science students to stretch themselves and deepen their learning and love for Chemistry.

Nivetha Senthil Kumar, Class of 2019
Text by Elena Choong (1T24) and Ray Anne Ng (1T01)
There is a saying, ‘the happiest people are those not getting more, but giving more.’ Volunteering is all about giving back to society, which we have received so much from. In times like these, it is through volunteer work that we learn to embrace the values of altruism and selflessness, giving hope and joy to those who need it the most. By helping others, we give them a most priceless gift - happiness. That is exactly what Nivetha d/o Senthil Kumar (2T13, Class of 2019) did.
Through observing her parents, friends and people around her who shared the desire of giving back to society, Nivetha found her calling in volunteering. As someone who embraced the call of wanting to do more for others, Nivetha started her volunteering journey when she was in secondary school. After a stint as a volunteer at the Red Cross Blood Bank, she became more passionate and signed up as a docent with the National Heritage Board in 2018 while she was in Catholic Junior College (CJC). She was also a volunteer at the Residents’ Committee before she journeyed with the Radin Mas Youth Network (RMYN).
As Vice President of the Interact Club in CJC, Nivetha led several activities such as spending time with the elderly at St Luke’s Elder Care once a week. The Interact Club soon intensified their activities to support the elderly more, through the ‘Grey Can Still Play Carnival’ organised by The Interact Coordinating Committee, the Rotary Club of Singapore, Youth Corps Singapore and Metropolitan YMCA. Through these experiences, Nivetha has been enriched by the invaluable knowledge from planning activities and interaction with beneficiaries from diverse backgrounds. Nivetha is grateful for her time in CJC which provided her with many opportunities for volunteering through the Interact Club. She recalls a quote from a seminar that she attended with the Interact Club: “Service is about Learning”. While it was challenging balancing school work, her Co-Curricular Activity and volunteer work, Nivetha puts in her best in all of her endeavours. She reiterated that the supportive environment in CJC as a place of learning and living made it possible for her to lead and serve in the area of volunteerism, and she has also grown to be resilient in the face of setbacks. As Singapore and the world battles Covid-19, it is with that same spirit of resilience, courage, and empathy that inspired Nivetha to step up and extend help to the community. As the national measures to contain the pandemic led to the postponement and cancellation of volunteer events, Nivetha realised that there were even fewer opportunities for her to serve. As a RMYN volunteer, she rose to the call of assisting the elderly and the needy during this trying period through mask distribution, hand sanitizer distribution, and temperature screenings. Together with other volunteers, she also baked cookies and distributed them to healthcare workers.
Nivetha’s passion for volunteering is evident in her belief that it is a critical part of her life. As a student, she has learnt to manage her time to balance her studies and her passion. In addition, Nivetha feels a sense of fulfillment and she hopes to inspire and encourage others, especially the young, to start thinking about how they can contribute to society. She believes that it is vital to eliminate apathy and indifference, and to be proactive in learning about the needs of the less fortunate in order to be agents of change. She encourages CJCians to be open to volunteering, to not underestimate the value of one’s contribution, and also to keep an open mind in this pursuit. With this mindset, she believes that one can overcome all odds and embody the essence of being a Thinker with a Mission and Leader with a Heart.

Dawn Chueh, Class of 2015
Dawn Chueh (Class of 2015) demonstrated selflessness and a keen sense of duty to the hospital that she was attached to while reading medicine in the UK. Dawn decided to stay on and continue working in the hospital instead of returning to Singapore because she knew that the hospital needed help.
According to Dawn, ‘I really love this community and all our patients, each time I go to work I am filled with love and happiness! They really keep me going. After seven months of placement in this hospital, I also grew attached to the medical team here and can’t bear to leave while the hospital is so understaffed. I feel so blessed by God throughout my life and especially during this period, I’m calm and at peace despite all that’s going on because I’m assured He will protect me! There are many challenging moments but also so many daily blessings that remind me of that. I really hope that everyone (especially current CJCians) explores and finds something they are passionate about, you can’t go wrong if you love what you do and do it wholeheartedly! I’m so thankful to have found my calling and trust me (and ask my teachers), I never expected it to be medicine! I took a gap year to explore and work, had some really rough months and some really great times. The journey is tough but it’s 100% worthwhile!’
Nathan Lim, Class of 2013, graduates from NTU with Honours (Highest Distinction) in 2020
Behind almost every success story is a testimony of sacrifice, setbacks and a radical change of direction. CJC alumnus, Nathan Lim (Class of 2013), is no stranger to that. He is a true example of a CJCian who realised his aspirations through perseverance, hard work, and tenacity. Nathan graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Nanyang Technological University’s (NTU) School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), and received Honours (Highest Distinction) (formerly First Class Honours) in the NTU-MSE Convocation for the Class of 2020.
In CJC, Nathan served as the Vice-President of Student Activities in the 38th Student Council. Nathan learnt to juggle his duties as a student councillor with the academic rigour of the GCE A-Level curriculum. Having no prior leadership experience, Nathan found that he needed to quickly adapt to the demands of student leadership. With the support of his fellow student councillors and teachers, Nathan played a very active role in the planning of numerous major college events. These experiences shaped his values and outlook in life. After graduating from CJC, Nathan chose to pursue his passion in renewable energy, more specifically solar energy, and applied to the School of Materials Science and Engineering at NTU. University life went well for him as he worked conscientiously in his chosen discipline. However, it was not without its challenges. Nathan faced a setback when his application for the SingaporeIndustry Scholarship (SgIS) was rejected. Yet, he did not let his disappointment demoralise him as he held on to his determination and belief that such an outlook would stop him from moving towards his goals. On his third attempt, he managed to secure the scholarship and was awarded the SgIS Mid-Term Scholarship REC Solar/SgIS in August 2019.
Nathan shares that receiving his pre-university education in CJC prepared him immensely for the challenges in life through the holistic opportunities and experiences that he received. He is grateful for the strong support system provided by his subject tutors and council teachers. Nathan extends his encouragement to CJCians to continue working hard towards their goals – ‘Hindsight is 20/20, so make the time you have in CJC to be the most memorable one you’ll ever have.’

Dr Shaun Gerald Nathan, Class of 2007, Superhero Award in the SG Health Quality Service Awards 2021
Dr Shaun Gerald Nathan, Class of 2007, won the Superhero Award, Clinician category, in the Singapore Health Quality Service Awards 2021. This nationwide platform honours healthcare professionals who have delivered quality care and excellent service to patients.
As cross-institution movement of healthcare staff was restricted to mitigate the risk of Covid-19 infection, Dr Shaun initiated telemedicine to help provide care to residents at the nursing homes, even if he could not visit the homes physically. He also volunteered for swab operations in the homes, where he helped in the training of nursing home staff on swabbing protocols.
‘One memory that will stay with me is that of a video conference session with a patient’s family. As I watched the family comfort the patient on screen, I was reminded of the importance of face-to-face interactions in my line of work. It taught me to never take physical presence for granted,’ he said. While the past year has had its ups and downs, it showed Dr Shaun that caring for the elderly is indeed his calling. ‘The work that we do is vital and I realised that I am exactly where I am meant to be,’ shared Dr Shaun.

Spotlight on Trail Blazer Captain Anastasia Gan (Pioneer Class of 1976) – Singapore’s first female commercial airline pilot
Photo credit: Capt Anastasia Gan, Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame In 1977, at age 19, the fresh junior college graduate decided to pursue a career in the army and joined the SAF’s Women Officer Cadet Course. In a collection of reflections written by the pioneer batch of students from Catholic Junior College, titled Our Footprints — Reflections in Truth and Love, she likened the nine-month course to ‘a long camping adventure’.
Ms Gan graduated as the top cadet during that course and was assigned an administrative role in the SAF. But she quickly realised that she preferred a role that would take her beyond the confines of an office. When the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) began recruiting pilots a year later, she applied for a spot and was accepted.
Ms Gan became one of a handful of women to earn the coveted RSAF pilot wings in 1979. She later became the air force’s first qualified female flying instructor. Disciplined yet nurturing, Ms Gan was given the affectionate call sign, Mama, by her fellow pilots.
After 23 years in the RSAF, the high-flyer joined SilkAir in 2001 where she rewrote Singapore’s aviation record books once again by becoming the nation’s first female commercial pilot at the age of 43. The mother of three daughters was also appointed an authorised flight examiner by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore in 2012.
Capt Gan shared her fond memories of CJC in a book specially put together by the Pioneer batch of 1975-1976 titled, Our Footprints — Reflections in Truth and Love. The following extracts are from the book.
My Office in the Sky!
‘Each typical college day began with an uphill walk. Then it was daily prayers led by Bro. Patrick, CJC’s first principal, from the centre of the square, the one that is today close to CJC’s main entrance. There was a sense of excitement and spirit in the air. Every day during those months, it was a discovery that is very hard to describe or for many to understand what it meant to be a pioneer and being part of that history.
As we were from mainly all Catholic schools, there was also a sense of belonging, amidst feeling lost in the new environment. As a school population, we were very involved in all activities such as the running of the school canteen to the design of the uniform, school crest and motto. This was done way before it became a norm for students to be involved in shaping the college. This was very special because it made us responsible and gave us ownership.
The two years in CJC were wonderful and it went by too fast.
I have learnt that in life, opportunities will present themselves to you and you must rise up to accept the challenges. I say adopt a positive outlook and go searching for what you really desire. Don’t live life with regrets of what could have been. I know most of the readers would be at the college age and still unsure of what lies ahead. Do not despair if you have not decided what career path to choose. Have faith but embrace life and seize the opportunities that come your way! I hope everyone has a fulfilling career as I have. God Bless!’
