THIS CHRISTMAS’S CONVERSATION STARTER! Pope Francis and the Caring Society Edited by Robert M. Whaples, Foreword by Michael Novak Pope Francis’s fervent support for uplifting the poor and protecting the environment has inspired far-reaching discussions worldwide. What is the most effective way to fight poverty? And how does a Catholic perspective address such moral, political, and economic problems? Pope Francis and the Caring Society is the indispensable book on Francis’s earnest call for a dialogue on building a truly compassionate world for human well-being. “We are all called to serve and care humbly for others, especially those most in need, but how we do so is crucial in guiding our moral responsibility.…The incisive and timely book, Pope Francis and the Caring Society, carefully examines this vital issue.” —Michael C. Barber, S.J., Bishop, Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland, California “In a manner graceful and civil—and with a proper respect for the Holy Father.… Pope Francis and the Caring Society could not have come at a more timely moment, and in tone and substance, it delivers a worldly lesson that more of the world needs to know.” —Hadley P. Arkes, Edward N. Ney Professor of Jurisprudence and American Institutions Emeritus, Amherst College “Ever since the publication of Pope Francis’s quite lengthy encyclical, we have needed a careful look at its suppositions, economic, ecological, and philosophical. Pope Francis and the Caring Society more than meets that need.…”

CHRISTMAS RETAIL STORE DÉCOR by Cathy Gilmore

TIPS & TECHNIQUES

EFFECTIVE DÉCOR CAN BE EASY AND INEXPENSIVE. Beauty is a powerful merchandising tool. Look what you can do with a couple of wreaths, some ribbon, cheap tinsel garland, 10-12 decor “baubles” (little decoration clusters on a wire pick) and some wire. Notice that the wreaths below look so fancy, yet they cost less than $10 each. You can often get wreaths at a thrift store. Just strip off any old trimmings and fluff up the wired greenery. The silver trimmings here were added by tucking a piece of inexpensive garland into the perimeter of the wreath and fluffing the greenery around it. FRAME A FEATURE ITEM WITH A WREATH You can use lightweight wire to hold the corners of a book in the middle of a wreath and hide the wire with some of the green. Here the book is featured in the center of a wreath positioned at the front of a display shelf. Notice the tinsel garland linking the wreath to the ceiling. This attractively hides a single length of wire to make this wreath ready to hang attractively in a front window or feature area. If you like decorating with the sparkle of silver or gold, still consider adding red accents and bows to make it POP. A bit of bold color is visually powerful and can make all the difference! Featured book is the Guadalupe Mysteries by Grzegorz Gorny and Janusz Rosikon from Ignatius Press. Feature companion book and statue items together, front and center in your store. You will plant the seed of “both/and” thinking. Give both the book AND the statue together…what an amazing gift! OFFER FAITH AND BEAUTY TIED WITH A BOW Strategically adding décor touches to make your store beautiful will grab and hold the interest of your visitors. If you do nothing else but add pretty colorful “two corner tied” bows to books and gifts strategically throughout your store, that simple touch alone can make a big difference. Just use the same style and color of ribbon on each. This technique is best added to any books or gifts for which you have multiples. You don’t want them to have to remove the bow to see what it is. And try not to sell the ones with the bow. If the customer wants a bow, add it to theirs during checkout. Small Christmas trees are also a great way to merchandise small items, ornaments and more. Each can be easily tied with a bow on the tree. Featured books: Sisters of the Last Straw by Karen Kelly Boyce from Chesterton Press. John Bosco by Barb Yoffie from Liguori.

SO SIMPLE: SILVER TINSEL GARLAND As well as hiding the wire to hang some décor, it can be laid across the span of any shelf to add inexpensive sparkle and draw attention to your gift items. Don’t drape it. Just lay it and cut it exactly to fit the length of the shelf. If you must secure it with tape, do it so the tape doesn’t show. You can use gold but silver is more subtle. Whatever you pick: do be consistent. Don’t mix the two unless all your décor mixes them equally. A strip of 2” wide red ribbon can have a similar effect. OFFER GIFTS WRAPPED WITH THE VIRTUE OF EMPATHY Do your guests a favor. Don’t let them fall into the trap of selecting gifts that their loved ones “should” read, or sacramentals they “should” use. Too often gifts that are meant to evangelize someone, end up gathering dust in a drawer or are shipped off to a thrift store before ever being used. The choice might make the giver feel good, but it does little to reach the heart of the recipient. Invite your shoppers to put themselves in the shoes of their loved one who is a fallen away Catholic. Choosing fresh Catholic fiction, memoirs and vividly written biographies are the gentlest form of evangelization. And remember…when parents or grandparents give an adorable Catholic picture storybook (Little Lamb Finds Christmas, comes to mind for one ;) to a family with lapsed Catholic young parents, the hearts of the lukewarm mom and dad can also touched as they read the story to their child or children.

MEET CATHY!

Cathy Gilmore presented creative and practical merchandising ideas for retailers at the 2016 and 2017 International CMN Conferences. As well as being an educator and 10-year veteran in retail marketing & merchandising, Cathy is the author of the award winning, Little Lamb Finds Christmas, a parable about Lemi the lamb, who finds true PEACE at the Christmas manger. Lemi shows that when we belong to Jesus, even lions and lambs can be friends! You can get your lambs from Liguori at http://www.liguori.org/ little-lamb-finds-christmas.html Cathy is building a ministry to offer an on-line platform where retailers, parents, grandparents, teachers and students can all come to one, easily searchable, place to find recommendations for great books and movies that affirm faith and build virtue. She is in the process of raising funds and, with God’s grace, plans to launch the phase one site sometime in 2018. It will be like the “Angie’s List” of Faith and Virtue reading and entertainment for Catholics! Traditional Carols We like to call them “indispensable carols” because these are the carols that we know and love, and without them, Christmas would not seem like Christmas. Just imagine not hearing, even once, “Silent Night” or “Adeste Fideles” during the Christmas season. Yet the very familiarity of these carols sometimes causes us to be unaware of their real meaning. These are sacred songs. Heard in proper sequence, they tell a story. This sacred story is the Gospel story written thousands of years ago.

Christmas Is a Holy Season This record sings of the real meaning of Christmas. It ignores, for the moment, all the ado about bells and sleighs, snow and winter, pudding and candies, and Santa Claus and his reindeer. All of these things are good and wholesome fun, but they are nevertheless embellished outgrowths of the fundamental fact that Christmas is the birthday of Christ. Christmas is thus a holy and sacred season, and for its reverent observance these songs and narrations are humbly offered with the hope of pleasing and edifying our listeners. On this record, Bing Crosby uses his iconic baritone to unify the carols with a spoken narration of Luke 2:4–20

STORY OF AN INCREDIBLE STORE 5 EASY WAYS TO CONNECT WITH YOUR CUSTOMERS IF YOU’RE ANYTHING LIKE ME, THERE IS A TENdency to get lost in the administrative and operational details of your business because, let’s face it, in small business we wear a ton of hats. I’m equal parts the platform director, secretary, accountant, and intern. On a regular workday, I can be found drowning in purchase orders, P&Ls, and texts from my wife who’s informed me that my two year old has been throwing a tantrum all day. However, on the days, weeks, and months I find myself the most successful is when I am deeply invested in the mission of my apostolate or the “why” behind why I go to work every morning.

by

STEVE DURAN Director of Business Development, 5 Stone/St. Joseph Communications

Our why is the reason and heart behind what we do. My why is the thing that is life-giving and propels me forward. The “what” is the way to get there, but our why is the reason we’re in business in the first place and gives us the destination. As a bookstore, gift shop, or Catholic business, it is critical that we connect our customers to our why. In order to be successful in this space, we need to be constantly finding ways to draw customers into the mission of our Catholic business. As this begins to happen, these customers begin to become brand ambassadors of our business which ultimate drives more leads to us in the long run. As an incredible store, here are five easy ways to connect with our customers:

1) Write down your “Why” for being in business - Our why must be clearly articulated and shared with our staff. Without this, we’ll never have a clear set of principles for making decisions. For me, this comes down entirely to leadership. As leaders at our companies, we have to be the ones to set the tone for our business. Keep in mind that anyone can follow a map, but it takes a captain of a ship to chart out a navigation plan. 2) Outline your story of how your got startedOur story is something that is unique and can be used to draw people into the mission of our business. Once these customers become fans of our story, these customers ultimately become ambassadors for our businesses. In the age of social media, every new customer that walks into our store has access to about 2,000 people in their circle that we have not even met yet. Again, the key is to draw them into our story, make them fans of our mission (our why) and watch as they bring business to us. 3) Look to be a “destination” of sorts - It really helps to find ways to create an environment where people want to come back to our stores. Ideas that we have found successful include screening films, running book clubs, and hosting events. Once we’ve clearly articulated this why, it is a good idea to have a physical manifestation of this mission in the form of an event. 4) Parish partnerships - Anecdotally, I have found that bookstores are oftentimes the frontlines of evangelization. Of the people I have met who have had conversions or reversions, the first place they went to when looking into the Catholic Faith, was not the adoration chapel, but instead a place where they could be fed spiritually such as their local Catholic shop or bookstore. If this tends to be the case, then we can begin to create this relationship with our local parishes where people come into the store and then are referred to the parish. Parishes in turn would be incentivized to send people to the store when

“When it comes to any type of business, there are those that manipulate and those that IN SPIR E. ” they are looking for materials on a certain topic. 5) Build a sacred space - The key for me here is to not be afraid to put prayer at the center of all we do. My advice is to carve out a literal sacred space in your shop for prayer and meditation. I like this for three reasons, it is on brand for what we are trying to do as Catholic businesses; as a Catholic bookstore, we already have the sacramentals in the shop to adorn the space; and lastly (most importantly), it gives people an excuse to return to your store and you never know who could use a moment of prayer. When it comes to any type of business, there are those that manipulate and those that inspire. As Catholic business owners, we need to inspire people. There is a reason you got into business into the first place and I am willing to bet that it is somehow connected with the story of how you got your start. If you want to be successful in this space and you want to be one of the 10% of businesses that remain in business after the first ten years, you need to focus on your story and start with your why. *This is an excerpt from Steve’s Retailer Education Day presentaion at the 2017 Trade Show. The message of Fatima reflects all the teachings of the Catholic faith. It’s a message so simple children could understand it – but at the same time so complex that theologians are still mining its depths. In The Miracle and the Message, author John C. Preiss describes in amazing detail the Blessed Mother’s appearances and challenges each of us to claim the message in our own lives, and embrace what Mary offers the Church and the World.
