Christians fight evil with love, sacrifice, never with violence

C

hristians are called to detach themselves from power, reject violence and sacrifice themselves for God and others out of love, Pope Francis said. Christians must live the way Christ chose to: not as “persecutors, but persecuted; not arrogant, but meek; not as snake-oil salesmen, but subservient to the truth; not impostors, but honest,” he said June 28 during his weekly general audience.

In fact, “Christians find repugnant the idea that suicide attackers might be called ‘martyrs’ because there is nothing in their purpose that can come close to the behavior of children of God,” who are called always to act out of love, he told the estimated 12,000 pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square.

In his weekly catechesis, the pope continued his series on Christian hope by focusing on what gives Christians strength and perseverance in the face of opposition, hatred and persecution.

Jesus dispelled all “mirages of easy success,” the pope said, and He warned His disciples that proclaiming the kingdom of God would come at a high price as “you will be hated by all because of My name.”

“Christians love, but they are not always loved,” the pope said.

Because the world is marked by sin, selfishness, injustice and hostility, he said, it is “normal” that Christians are expected to go against the current and live the way Christ lived and taught.

The Christian lifestyle must be marked by “poverty,” he said, noting how Jesus talks to His disciples more about “stripping” themselves than about “getting dressed.” Christians journey forth into the world with the bare essentials, except their heart, which should be overflowing with love, he said.

In the Gospel of Matthew (10:16-22), Jesus warned His disciples that He was sending them “like sheep in the midst of wolves.” They could be shrewd and prudent, the pope said, but never violent because evil can never be defeated with evil. The only weapons Christians possess are the Gospel and the hopeful assurance that God is always by their side, especially in the worst of times.

Christians know that in their midst, there is always a divine power greater than all evil. This, the pope said, is the strength that animates and sustains people facing so much hardship: knowing that “nothing and no one can separate them from God’s love given to us in Jesus Christ.”

St. Kateri Tekakwitha, ‘Lily of the Mohawks’ Feast day: Monday, July 14 On July 14, the Church celebrates the feast day of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, the first Native American to be canonized. Known as the “Lily of the Mohawks,” Kateri lived a life of holiness and virtue, despite obstacles and opposition within her tribe.

Kateri was born in Auriesville, N.Y., in 1656 to a Christian Algonquin woman and a pagan Mohawk chief. When she was a child, a smallpox epidemic attacked her tribe and both her parents died. She was left with permanent scars on her face and impaired eyesight. Her uncle, who had now become chief of the tribe, adopted her and her aunts began planning her marriage while she was still very young.

When three Jesuit fathers were visiting the tribe in 1667 and staying in the tent of her uncle, they spoke to her of Christ, and though she did not ask to be baptized, she believed in Jesus with an incredible intensity. She also realized that she was called into an intimate union with God as a consecrated virgin.

Kateri had to struggle to maintain her faith amid the opposition of her tribe who ridiculed her for it and ostracized her for refusing the marriage that had been planned for her. When Kateri was 18, Father Jacques de Lamberville returned to the Mohawk village,

and she asked to be baptized.

The life of the Mohawk village had become violent and debauchery was commonplace. Realizing that this was proving too dangerous to her life and her call to perpetual virginity, Kateri escaped to the town of Caughnawaga in Quebec, near Montreal, where she grew in holiness and devotion to the Blessed Sacrament.

Kateri lived out the last years of her short life there, practicing austere penance and constant prayer. She was said to have reached the highest levels of mystical union with God, and many miracles were attributed to her while she was still alive.

She died on April 17, 1680, at the age of 24. Witnesses reported that within minutes of her death, the scars from smallpox completely vanished and her face shone with radiant beauty.

Devotion to Kateri began immediately after her death and her body, enshrined in Caughnawaga, is visited by many pilgrims each year. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1980, and she was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012.

‘Many blessings coming’ Catholic Charities opens larger center June 29 to serve community SueAnn Howell Senior reporter

WINSTON-SALEM — Catholic Charities Diocese of Charlotte has provided charitable outreach to the poor, vulnerable and others in need throughout western North Carolina for decades. On June 29, the agency celebrated another milestone as it moved into a larger facility to better serve the Piedmont-Triad region.

The 10,000-square-foot facility, located at 1612 14th St. N.E. in Winston-Salem, replaces the Piedmont-Triad regional office located at 627 W. 2nd St. in Winston-Salem.

“Offering services from two converted houses and a garage (for our food pantry) has always presented a challenge for our staff and clients,” noted Dr. Gerard Carter, executive director of Catholic Charities Diocese of Charlotte, about the former office location. “For that reason, we are excited to be moving to our new service facility. This site is only 2.4 miles away from our current location and sits contiguous with the property owned by St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church.”

The renovated building affords Catholic Charities the opportunity to gather all of its regional staff under one roof, offers service participants a larger waiting room, creates ample space for expanded services, and provides more convenient parking, Carter said.

The Piedmont-Triad regional office employs 12 staff members with assistance from more than 70 volunteers.

They operate a food pantry, provide family and individual

counseling, offer teen pregnancy and parenting support services, oversee the Stay the Course program that supports community college students, provide interpretation and language services, and much more. The location also houses the WeeCare Shoppe, which provides free clothing to children in need.

The new facility stands on the property that once housed St. Anne’s Academy, a Catholic school built and run by the Sisters of St. Francis of Allegany, N.Y., to serve the neighborhood’s African-American community. Raleigh Bishop Vincent S. Waters dedicated the academy, convent and dormitories in September 1946.

“Catholic Charities is thankful to the Diocese of Charlotte for purchasing and renovating the building, and their support during the transition,” said Becky DuBois, acting office director in Winston-Salem.

She added, “We are grateful to our donors and supporters for their dedication and ongoing commitment to the mission and work of Catholic Charities from this new location.”

Last year, DuBois noted, the Piedmont-Triad regional office served approximately 5,000 people.

“We do anticipate helping more people (going forward),” she said. “Although our previous office was located in a residential neighborhood, our new location is in the midst of a neighborhood consisting of many more families. We have already experienced an increase of new people from the neighborhood coming to the food pantry and for baby clothes.”

DuBois thanked the many volunteers who spent

countless hours helping her pack up at the old office, move things to the new building and unpack and settle into the new space.

“We are honored to be new residents in this historic neighborhood in Winston-Salem,” she said.

Volunteer Diane Stanley shared her thoughts on serving at the new facility. “As the saying goes, ‘To those to whom a lot has been given, a lot is expected.’ I have been blessed and have a need to give back. I feel like I have gained more than I have given from my time at Catholic Charities.”

Monsignor Mauricio West, vicar general and chancellor of the diocese, blessed the new facility June 29. Following the blessing, guests were invited to tour the building and enjoy refreshments. Staff and volunteers shared information about the agency’s services during the tours.

“Guests commented on how beautiful the building is, and community collaborators and partners spoke with staff about opportunities for joint endeavors,” DuBois said. “With the large multi-purpose room and the large conference room, Catholic Charities is in a position to host group meetings and events.”

“The overall feeling was one of joy and celebration,” she noted.

Said Carter, “We are deeply grateful to all of our benefactors and colleagues in various diocesan offices that supported us through the process of securing, renovating and eventually relocating into this wonderful new facility.

“We see many blessings coming to so many people as a result of this move.”

Young Women attend ‘duc in altum’ discernment retreat

More than 80 young women from across the Diocese of Charlotte took part in the second annual Duc In Altum vocation discernment retreat held at Belmont Abbey College. BELMONT — More than 80 young women attended the second annual Duc In Altum vocation discernment retreat June 26-30, sponsored by the Diocese of Charlotte Vocations Office and hosted at Belmont Abbey College.

Attendance was significantly higher than last year’s inaugural retreat, which drew 51 young women. Duc In Altum, Latin for “Put Out Into the Deep,” is designed to encourage young women to listen to God’s will for their lives, and the retreat features a week of prayer, Eucharistic Adoration and Mass, recitation of the rosary, a Marian procession, group discussions, lectures, games, music and more.

On the first evening of the retreat, organizer Sister Mary Raphael welcomed the participants and posed the question, “As a daughter of God, how do you perceive your Heavenly Father?” She continued, “God has a plan for each of you and you must trust in His vocation for you.”

Each individual, she noted, is like the ocean, and exploring the depth of one’s life requires trusting in God and listening to Him.

“One does not know his or her own vocation without allowing God’s help to assist in such discovery,” Sister Mary Raphael said. “To understand your vocation, you must listen to God.” The mission of this retreat, she continued, was to explore their individual roles as women in the Church, leaning upon the example of Mary the Immaculate as the exemplar of femininity.

This year’s retreat was especially significant for the participants and organizers, as it took place during the 100th anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima’s apparitions to the children of Fatima, Portugal, in 1917. The history and lessons of Fatima were featured subjects during the retreat.

Prayer, said speaker Sister Agnes in her talk on Fatima, “is the true and total actual acceptance and attention to God.” “Change the world through the prayer of God,” she said.

“Sister Agnes’ talk about the apparitions of Mary to the children of Fatima stood out to me,” said participant Cecilia Murray of St. John the Baptist Parish in Tryon.

“One hundred years ago, Mary showed those children what hell is and those children came to understand the

consequences of what living recklessly entails. I think that Our Lady of Fatima teaches us to understand the gravity of our actions and what can come out of them.”

Abby Kramer, another participant of the retreat, added, “The events at Fatima remind us of all of our world’s present issues and how much we should pray for those issues to cease, and (for) our healing.”

Other participants said the retreat’s emphasis on prayer – private prayer as well as praying the Liturgy of the Hours together – meant the most to them.

“I came to Duc In Altum to be able to spend more time with God and to get away from things that often distract me from becoming closer to Him,” said retreat participant Catherine Mangano.

“I came to Duc In Altum to become closer to God and to discover what path He has chosen for me,” echoed participant Zoey Maxwell.

Both girls agreed that a lesson from the retreat that they want to implement in their daily lives is to separate themselves from the distractions of today’s technology, and give themselves more time for prayer and discernment of their life’s calling. When asked whether they would return for a future retreat, both girls exclaimed, “Yes!”

Religious liberty march ‘witness to freedom’ CHARLOTTE — The annual “Fortnight for Freedom” – a two-week campaign focusing on the importance of religious freedom both at home and abroad – kicked off June 23 with a march through uptown Charlotte and a prayer vigil outside the Charles R. Jonas Federal Courthouse, where a group of Catholics prayed the Litany for Religious Liberty, the rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Stopping at Independence Square during their march through uptown Charlotte, speakers prayed and spoke about the threats to religious liberty, especially the persecution of Christians in the Middle East, and about the need to protect the conscience rights of others. St. Joseph Academy co-founder, Sister Mary Isabel Carpenter, dies aged 98 MAGGIE VALLEY — St. Joseph Sister Mary Isabel Carpenter, 98, died on Thursday, June 29, 2017, at Maggie Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation.

A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Friday, July 7, and at 9:30 a.m.

Saturday, July 8, at St. John the Evangelist Church in Waynesville.

Carpenter A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, at St. John the Evangelist Church with Father Larry LoMonaco and Father Richard Benonis concelebrating. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery.

Sister Mary Isabel was born in Chicago on March 4, 1919, to the late Herbert Jack and Harriet Elizabeth Lake Carpenter. She came to Maggie Valley in 1992, where she was the cofounder of St. Joseph Academy in Maggie Valley, along with Sister Mary Ruth and Sister Mary Celine. She taught kindergarten through third grade until 2008. She was also the music director for the whole school. She was active at the school until 2013. She served as a Sister of St. Joseph for a remarkable 84 years.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Josette Carpenter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sister of Providence celebrates 60th jubilee SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. — One Sister of Providence of Saint Mary-ofthe-Woods, Ind., with ties to the Diocese of Charlotte is celebrating her 60th jubilee anniversary this year.

Sister Sharon Richards is a native of Owosso, Mich. Currently, she ministers as a volunteer at St. Alexander School in Palos Heights, Ill. Sister Sharon, formerly Sister Charlene, entered Richards the Sisters of Providence on Feb. 2, 1957, from Our Lady Queen of Martyrs in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She graduated from Saint Mary-of-theWoods College with a bachelor’s degree in education. She also earned a master’s degree in education from Marygrove

College in Detroit, Mich.

In the Charlotte diocese, her ministries included teaching at St. Ann School in Charlotte from 1972 to 1973, and at St. Joan of Arc School in Candler from 1973 to 1974.

Sister Sharon has also ministered in Illinois and Maryland.

‘Dear Senator’ CHARLOTTE — Parishioners at St. Peter Church recently organized a letter-writing campaign to encourage their elected officials to support “Bread For The World,” a Christian movement focused on ending hunger in the United States and abroad. The June 10-11 effort sent more than 536 letters to North Carolina Senators Richard Burr and Thom Tillis, Representatives Alma Adams and Robert Pittenger, and South Carolina Senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott. A team of parishioners coordinated by Jesuit Father John Michalowski provided letter templates, writing tools and computer printers to hundreds of people after every Mass that weekend so that they could write and sign letters supporting programs that invest in human potential and help to eradicate hunger. Parents brought their children to the kid’s table set up in Biss Hall where together, adults and youths wrote letters and made colorful posters – making it an opportunity to teach them about the need for Catholics to advocate for the poor and marginalized. St. Peter parishioner Tom Orth delivered the letters to the elected leaders’ Washington, D.C., offices on June 12, Bread For The World Lobby Day. In thanking people for their participation, Father Michalowski said, “God is good. Let us pray that the grace of the Holy Spirit can break down partisan barriers so that our nation can continue to help the poor and hungry both here and internationally.”

Bishops discuss population growth, immigration, evangelization at province meeting Christina Lee Knauss The Catholic Miscellany

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Bishops from the Atlanta Province reflected on a positive trend in their areas while attending their 2017 meeting June 26-28 in the Diocese of Charleston.

All of the dioceses which comprise the province are experiencing a record amount of growth, said Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. In this regard, the Church in the Carolinas and Georgia is experiencing the exact opposite of some northern dioceses, where the number of people in the pews is declining in many areas, and parishes and schools are being closed or forced to consolidate.

In an interview with The Catholic Miscellany, Archbishop Gregory said that the leaders realized the scope of growth in the province while touring the Diocese of Charleston’s new Pastoral Center, which opened in 2016.

“We realized that all five of the dioceses represented here have recently opened new chancery offices,” Archbishop Gregory said. “We are all in a growth mode. That’s a good thing. We are spending part of our time here talking about the need to establish new parishes, expand pastoral outreach, and respond to growing numbers both from immigration and those moving here from other parts of the country. We all are sharing in this growth.”

of the topics addressed during their annual meeting.

Bishops in attendance were Most Rev. J. Kevin Boland, bishop emeritus of the Diocese of Savannah; Bishop Robert E. Guglielmone of Charleston; Bishop Gregory J. Hartmayer, OFM Conv., of Savannah, Ga.; Father Bernard E. Shlesinger III, auxiliary bishop-elect of the Diocese of Atlanta, and Auxiliary Bishop Luis R. Zarama of Atlanta. Bishop Peter Jugis was unable to attend.

Archbishop Gregory said the prelates spoke about the ongoing impact of immigration in their areas, including how new legislation and the political climate are affecting the immigrant population.

Bishop Guglielmone said increased attention to the immigration question is especially important to dioceses in the province because most of the Hispanic immigrants in the region are Catholic.

“We realize that we have those who are documented and undocumented, and they are all our brothers and sisters,” Bishop Guglielmone said. “We have to see how we can be of assistance to them.”

Bishop Guglielmone said he and his fellow bishops also discussed issues related to the Convocation of Catholic Leaders in Orlando, Fla., especially the need for increased evangelization.

Another topic before the prelates was the effect of Pope Francis’ 2016 apostolic exhortation “Amoris Laetitia” (“The Joy of Love”) on ministry to married couples and families. Archbishop Gregory said they

focused particularly on how each diocesan tribunal is responding to Pope Francis’ call to streamline the annulment process, and make it more accessible and affordable.

“This meeting is important because it is a time for us to be together and to share information with each other because we are all facing the same common issues,” Archbishop Gregory said.

The archbishop also celebrated Mass in the pastoral center’s Chapel of the Holy Family, which was attended by diocesan employees and people from the community.

His homily reflected on the day’s Gospel reading (Mt 7:6, 12-14) which includes Christ’s instruction on how humans should interact with one another: “Do to others whatever you would have them do to you.”

He reminded the congregation of how those simple words developed into what is now known as the “Golden Rule,” which has become a standard of behavior in both religious and secular tradition. However, he said, these are days when the “Golden Rule” is under serious assault.

“If there has ever been a moment in human history when we should listen to this rule, we are in it now,” Archbishop Gregory said. “We have had terrible examples lately of people who have obviously forgotten how they would like others to treat them. Matthew in this Gospel does not mince words. If we all would simply treat others the way we want to be treated, the world would be in a better place right now.”

A festive feast day SALISBURY — Parishioners at Sacred Heart Church celebrated the parish’s patronal feast day with two days of prayer, worship and fun June 23-24. The celebration began Thursday evening with a Holy Hour and the opportunity to receive the sacrament of penance, followed by Eucharistic Adoration throughout the night. On Friday morning, the day began with Mass, followed by Eucharistic Adoration throughout the day and the singing of the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3 p.m.

A steady stream of swearing makes this long, loud and dumb production, the fifth franchise entry for a series based on a line of Hasbro toys, inappropriate for those undemanding youngsters who might somehow enjoy it. Occult themes, much harsh but mostly bloodless combat violence, at least one use of profanity, a few milder oaths, much crude and crass language.

‘Baby Driver’ Stylish, high-octane crime drama in which an otherwise decent young man (Ansel Elgort) is forced to serve as the getaway driver in a series of bank robberies in order to pay off his debt to a callous mobster (Kevin Spacey). As he works with a variety of lowlifes (most prominently Jon Hamm, Eiza Gonzalez and Jamie Foxx) to pull off the heists, the better part of his nature is expressed in the care he gives his deaf and ailing foster father (CJ Jones) and in his romance with a sprightly diner waitress (Lily James). Writer-director Edgar Wright earns his paycheck with a film carefully choreographed down to the last gesture, and the basic values at work in his script are sound. Yet, while the central relationship remains chaste, late plot developments involve a quantity of bloodletting that will seem excessive to many moviegoers.

Evangelizing today isn’t easy, but it’s exciting ORLANDO, Fla. — Delegates at the “Convocation of Catholic Leaders: The Joy of the Gospel in America” have their work cut out for them but they are equipped to do it. “The saints always loved a good fight and we should like a good fight, too,” said July 4 keynote speaker Auxiliary Bishop Robert E. Barron of Los Angeles via video hook-up.

The bishop, known for the documentary series “Catholicism” and the website “Word on Fire,” cited sobering Church statistics: For every Catholic who joins the Church, six leave, he said, and the number of “nones” – those who claim no religious affiliation even if they were baptized Catholic – is growing.

But he encouraged delegates to move forward, saying, “It’s an exciting time to be an evangelist.” And he urged them to pick up their game to evangelize effectively.

Take Gospel to struggling people everywhere ORLANDO, Fla. — Being Christian is more than accepting Jesus as savior, but requires the faithful to go to the peripheries of society where people are struggling materially and spiritually, Archbishop Jose H. Gomez of Los Angeles said. “Jesus calls us to follow Him. That is an action, a decision that implies a way of life,” he said during a plenary session July 3. The mission of the Church to go to people on the sidelines of society is a responsibility not just for bishops, clergy and Church professionals, but for the entire Church, he said.

Changing landscape requires mutual accompaniment ORLANDO, Fla. — The U.S. Church’s increasing diversity presents Catholics with the opportunity to accompany each other on the journey of faith Pope Francis envisions, said Hosffman Ospino, associate professor of theology and religious education at Boston College. “It’s OK if we wrestle with diversity and pluralism,” he said July 2. “This where we need to exercise the pastoral practice of mutual accompaniment.” Citing the explosive growth of the Church in the South and West, Ospino said the Church is being called to respond to the needs of new immigrants so that they are welcomed and not made to feel forgotten.

Whatever their reason to travel to hot, humid Florida for four days in the middle of summer, the 3,500 delegates to the “Convocation of Catholic Leaders: The Joy of the Gospel in America” headed home July 4 with renewed energy to set a new course for the Church in the U.S. The July 1-4 convocation was the first time in a century that the bishops convened Church leaders – clergy, religious, seminarians, parish volunteers and professional staff among them – to respond to social and spiritual quandaries that have left millions of people drifting on the margins of society.

Pope Francis fueled the impetus for the gathering. His 2013 apostolic exhortation, “Evangelii Gaudium” (“The Joy of the Gospel”), gave planners at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops another reason for organizing the gathering. It lays out a vision of the Church dedicated to evangelization – missionary discipleship – in a positive way, with a focus on society’s poorest and most vulnerable, including the aged, unborn and forgotten.

In Brief Atlanta auxiliary bishop named to head Diocese of Raleigh WASHINGTON, D.C. — Pope Francis has named Atlanta Auxiliary Bishop Luis R. Zarama to head the Diocese of Raleigh.

He succeeds Bishop Michael F. Burbidge, who last October was named to head the Diocese of Arlington, Va., where he was installed Dec. 6.

Bishop Zarama, 58, has been an Atlanta auxiliary bishop since 2009. A native of Colombia, he was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Atlanta in 1993.

The appointment was announced in Washington July 5 by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States.

Agencies worry about refugees in limbo, caught up in travel ban WASHINGTON — Agencies and organizations that help refugees start new lives in the U.S. worry about the fate that awaits migrants in transit as well as those who will not be allowed into the country as the partial ban that the U.S. Supreme Court set in motion with its late June ruling goes into effect in early July. “The immediate priority is the safety of those refugees who are en route, ensuring they reach their destination,” said Ashley Feasley, policy director for Migration and Refugee Services at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington. “We are also very concerned about the individuals who have assured

cases that are scheduled for travel after July 6 who may not be able to arrive now due to the interpretation of the Supreme Court decision and the executive order.”

The Supreme Court announced June 26 it would temporarily allow the Trump administration’s plan to ban of refugees from six majority-Muslim countries, unless those refugees had “bona fide” relationships with parties in the U.S. In an executive order that underwent one revision and was blocked by lower courts, the administration has said it needs the time to review the refugee resettlement program and its vetting procedures for allowing refugees into the country, and also said it was necessary to limit the number of the refugees allowed into the U.S. to 50,000 for 2017. That number was expected to be reached July 6.

Bishop: Taking ‘vital coverage’ from those in need ‘unacceptable’ WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Senate must reject any health care reform bill that will “fundamentally alter the social safety net for millions of people,” said the chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development. “Removing vital coverage for those most in need is not the answer to our nation’s health care problems, and doing so will not help us build toward the common good,” Bishop Frank J. Dewane of Venice, Fla., said in a June 27 letter to U.S. senators. He urged them to reject such changes “for the sake of persons living on the margins of our health care system.” A day earlier, Bishop Dewane issued a statement saying that the loss of affordable health care under the Republicans’ proposal was “simply unacceptable.”

Cardinal Pell, professing innocence, will face charges in Australia

VATICAN CITY — Proclaiming his innocence after being charged with sexual abuse, Australian Cardinal George Pell said, “I’m looking forward finally to having my day in court.”

“I’m innocent of these charges. They are false.

The whole idea of sexual abuse is abhorrent to me,” he said June 29 during a brief news conference in the Vatican press office.

Greg Burke, director of the Vatican press office, said Pope Francis had granted Cardinal Pell a leave of absence from his position as prefect of the Vatican Secretariat for the Economy so that he can work on his defense.

Cardinal Pell, Burke added, will Pell not participate in any public liturgies while his case is being considered.

“These matters have been under investigation now for two years,” Cardinal Pell told the press. “There’s been relentless character assassination, a relentless character assassination, and for more than a month claims that a decision on whether to lay charges was imminent.”

Without giving specifics about the number of charges or the incidents, police in Australia’s Victoria state announced June 29 that charges had been filed against the cardinal and that he has been called to appear in court July 18.

Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton told reporters June 29, “Cardinal Pell is facing multiple charges in respect of historic sexual offenses and there are multiple complainants relating to those charges.”

Patton also told reporters, “It is important to note that none of the allegations that have been made against Cardinal Pell have obviously been tested in any court yet.”

“Cardinal Pell, like any other defendant, has a right to due process and so therefore it is important that the process is allowed to run its natural course,” Patton added.

In his statement, Cardinal Pell said he had kept Pope Francis informed “during these long months” when police and the Australian media were talking about the possibility of charges being made.

“I have spoken to him on a number of occasions in the last week, I think most recently a day or so ago,” Cardinal Pell said of Pope Francis. “And we talked about my need to take leave to clear my name, so I’m very grateful to the Holy Father for giving me this leave to return to Australia.”

Cardinal Pell said he had spoken to his lawyers about the timing of his return to Australia and also had consulted his doctors about the trip.

In February 2016, Australia’s Royal Commission Into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse allowed Cardinal Pell to testify by video link from Rome because a heart condition prevented him from traveling to Australia.

A year ago, in July, allegations surfaced in a report by the Australian Broadcasting Corp. featuring several people who accused Cardinal Pell of sexual assault; at least one of the accusations had been found to be unsubstantiated by an Australian court in 2002. Some accusations dated to the late 1970s, when Cardinal Pell was a priest in Ballarat, Australia.

Speaking to reporters at the Vatican June 29, the cardinal said, “All along I have been completely consistent and clear in my total rejection of these allegations. News of these charges strengthens my resolve, strengthens my resolve. And court proceedings now offer me an opportunity to clear my name and then return here, back to Rome, to work.”

VATICAN CITY — The health of the Catholic Church can be measured in many ways, and the Vatican has a special office just for that purpose.

The Central Statistics Office, which operates under the Vatican Secretariat of State, conducts a variety of studies for the Roman Curia throughout the year. But one of the office’s biggest projects is compiling the annual, 500-page Statistical Yearbook of the Church.

Of course, the yearbook tracks the Catholic population, both by a head count of the baptized in each country and as a percentage of the world’s population. The latest report, based on numbers gathered Dec. 31, 2015, tallied 1.28 billion Catholics, which is about 17.7 percent of the global population.

Ten years earlier, according to the statistics office, Catholics numbered just over 1.1 billion, which was 17.3 percent of the population at that time.

Worldwide Catholics operate close to 118,000 hospitals, clinics, homes for the aged, orphanages, counseling centers and rehabilitation facilities. Ten years ago, the number of such facilities was less than 115,000.

When the Statistical Yearbook of the Church is released each year, one of the first figures many people look at is what the book defines as the “workforce for the Church’s apostolate.”

For the year ending Dec. 31, 2015, that included: 5,304 bishops; 281,514 diocesan priests; 134,142 religious order priests; 45,255 permanent deacons; 54,229 religious brothers; 670,330 religious sisters; 351,797 lay missionaries; and more than 3.1 million catechists.

But the yearbook looks even deeper, for example, by giving an indication of the “pastoral workload” of priests both in relation to the number of baptized Catholics as well as to the general population.

Catholics in Tajikistan can expect personalized pastoral care. With 38 Catholics for every priest, the country has the best Catholics-to-priest ratio in the world. Of course, there are only four priests in the country and fewer than 200 Catholics. Catholics on the nine-island nation of Tuvalu in the South Pacific do nicely with a ratio of 120 Catholics for every priest.

On the other end of the scale are Qatar and Saudi Arabia, which have tens of thousands of Catholic foreign workers from countries like India and the Philippines and

restrictions on the ministry of clergy. According to the Vatican, the ratio of Catholics-to-priest is 52,000-to-1 in Qatar and a staggering 125,000-to-1 in Saudi Arabia.

The worldwide average is 3,091 Catholics for every priest.

The situation in North America is better than average.

In Canada, there are 2,242 Catholics for every priest, and in the United States, the ratio is 1,808 Catholics for each priest.

But both Canada and the United States also made the list of more than two dozen nations where the number of priests who died in 2015 was greater than the number of new priests ordained. Most of the other countries on the list are in Western Europe.

For the Vatican, one of the most important statistics is the number of baptisms performed each year and, specifically, what percentage of those involve new Catholics who are over the age of 7, the traditional “age of reason.”

In 2015, the yearbook reported, there were a total of more than 15.7 million baptisms, and just over 17 percent of them involved persons over the age of 7. The percentage of baptisms involving older children and adults was highest in Africa (32.6 percent), followed by the Caribbean (23.3 percent) and Southeast Asia (17 percent).

Further analyzing the figures on the baptism of infants and small children, the statistics office looked at the number of those baptisms for every 1,000 Catholics. For the past five years, it said, “there has been a general downward trend,” which closely follows the declining birthrates in many nations.

The ratio declined over the five-year period in every region of the world. For example, in Africa in 2005, there were 13.2 baptisms for every 1,000 Catholics; in 2015, the figure was 12.3.

The ratio of Catholic marriages for every 1,000 Catholics present also declined over the five-year period.

Some other figures from the Statistical Yearbook: n Around the world, 481 parishes are “entrusted to women religious.” Both North America and Europe have 104 such parishes, while 126 parishes in South America are run by sisters. n The two countries with the highest percentage of Catholics in the general population are: Andorra, where 99.7 percent of the population is Catholic; and Equatorial Guinea, which reported 97.2 percent of its population is Catholic. Vatican City State is not included in the survey. n Of the 5,304 bishops in the world at the end of 2015, 886 (16.7 percent) of them were residing or ministering in a country other than the country of their birth. In 1995, there were 4,319 bishops and 15.8 percent of them were residing outside their homelands. Bishops ministering abroad include the international corps of archbishops serving as Vatican ambassadors around the world and those working at the Vatican.

The Vatican announced July 1 that the pope chose as prefect Spanish Archbishop Luis Ladaria Ferrer, 73, a Jesuit theologian who had been appointed secretary of the congregation in 2008 by thenPope Benedict XVI. “The Holy Father Francis thanked His Eminence Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Muller at the conclusion of his quinquennial mandate,” the Vatican announcement said.

No new position was announced for Cardinal Muller, who at 69 is still more than five years away from the normal retirement age for a bishop.

Anticipating an announcement of the pope’s decision June 30, both the English Rorate Caeli blog and the Italian Corrispondenza Romana blog presented the pope’s move as a dismissal of the German cardinal, who originally was appointed to the post by now-retired Pope Benedict XVI. Pope Francis had met that morning with Cardinal Muller, whose five-year term was to end July 2.

In an interview with Allgemeine Zeitung, the cardinal said the pope’s decision had been unexpected since such terms were usually

renewed, but that he was not bothered by it. He told the newspaper that Pope Francis wanted, in general, to limit the term of office to five years and he just happened to be the first person to whom the new standard applied.

Pope tells archbishops not to be ‘armchair Catholics,’ but apostles VATICAN CITY — The Catholic Church’s new cardinals and new archbishops must be willing to risk everything, patiently endure evil and bear crosses like Jesus did, Pope Francis said.

“The Lord answers our prayers. He is faithful to the love we have professed for Him, and He stands beside us at times of trial.” Just as he accompanied the apostles, “He will do the same for you,” the pope told five new cardinals and about 30 archbishops named during the past year.

Pope Francis addressed the new cardinals and archbishops during his homily at a Mass in St. Peter’s Square June 29, the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, who are the patron saints of the Vatican and the city of Rome. The Mass was celebrated the day after Pope Francis created new cardinals from El Salvador, Mali, Laos, Sweden and Spain. Thirty-six archbishops appointed over the course of the past year were also invited to come to Rome to concelebrate the feast day Mass with Pope Francis. They came from 26 countries.

The concelebrants included Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin of Newark, N.J.; and Archbishops Paul D. Etienne of Anchorage, Alaska; and Charles C. Thompson of Indianapolis. All three of the U.S. prelates have deep connections to the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Archbishop Etienne was a priest of the archdiocese and Cardinal Tobin is the former archbishop.

Fatima: The apparitions continue The fourth apparition: The 19th of August

O

f all the torment, trial and terror inflicted by the magistrate on the three children of Fatima – 9-year-old Francisco Marto and 7-year-old Jacinta Marto, along with their 10-year-old cousin Lucia dos Santos – the most egregious offense was keeping them imprisoned on Aug. 13. They were heartbroken. Each of the three made a promise to the Lady to be at the Cova da Iria on the 13th of every month, and this month they were not there.

With innocent, childlike reasoning they believed they had broken that promise and had disappointed her.

The following Sunday, Aug. 19, the children went to the Cova as usual to pray the rosary. They returned home for lunch. Afterwards, Lucía decided to go to Valinhos, not far away, to spend the afternoon in prayer. Francisco and his older brother John went with her. (John lived in the family home until his death on April 28, 2000.) Around 4 p.m. the air cooled, the sun paled, and they saw the typical flash of light that usually preceded an appearance of Our Lady.

John was excited to be there for this apparition, but Lucía ordered him to go home and return with Jacinta. After some coaxing and four pennies, John did just that. He found Jacinta at her godmother’s house. Taking her by the hand, he whispered the news to her. Together they raced to Valinhos. As soon as the two arrived, a second flash lit the area.

Now that the four children were together, on their knees and praying, the Lady in brilliant light appeared over a holm oak, slightly taller than the one at the Cova.

Lucía would later recall that she had a sense that the Lady was rewarding them for their fidelity during their ordeal.

As in every apparition before, Lucía began by asking the Lady, “What do you want of me?”

“I want you to continue to come to the Cova da Iria on the 13th and to continue to say the rosary every day.”

Lucía told Our Lady of her sorrow over all the people who did not believe she was appearing. Lucía asked for a miracle or a sign so that everyone would believe.

“Yes,” Our Lady answered, “In the last month, in October, I shall perform a miracle so that all may believe in my apparitions. If they had not taken you to the village, the miracle would have been greater. St. Joseph will come with the Baby Jesus to give peace to the world. Our Lord also will come to bless the people. Besides, Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of Sorrows will come.”

The miracle Our Lady promised was intended for the people, so that all would come to believe. The children had not asked for this sign so people would believe in them. Selflessly, they wanted everyone to believe so they could, too, could make reparations for sins against the Immaculate Heart and the Sacred Heart. The magistrate, the guards, the inquisitors, their collaborators and the crowds of people who insulted and harmed the children would still have a sign of her presence. Had their hearts not been hardened, the sign would have been greater.

Lucía remembered Senhora da Capelinha’s request and said: “What do you wish us to do with the money and the offerings that the people leave at the Cova da Iria?”

“Have two litters made. One is to be carried by you and Jacinta and two other girls dressed in white; Francisco is to carry the other with three boys also dressed in white robes. The money placed on the litters is for the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.” (A litter is a portable platform mounted on two poles and usually carried by four people. It is often used in religious processions to carry a statue or image of a saint, or as in Fatima, a statue of Mary.)

Lucía then spoke to Our Lady of the sick who had been recommended to her.

“Yes, I shall cure some of them within the year.”

But she went on, teaching them to pray rather for the health of souls than of bodies. “Pray!

Pray a great deal and make sacrifices for sinners, for many souls go to hell for not having someone to pray and make sacrifices for them.”

The Lady’s apparition was not lengthy. She began to rise towards the east, as before and was gone.

The children were consoled by this visit from the Lady. This visit was special because it was intimate. There were no large crowds like there were at the Cova da Iria. At the Cova, people had stripped off every branch and twig from the holm oak. The children were never able to return with even a simple leaf. They decided to break off a small branch which the robe of the Lady had touched. John and Lucía stayed at Valinhos with the sheep, while Francisco and Jacinta rushed home with the branch to tell their parents of the unexpected visit of Our Lady.

The children’s desire for a sign from the Lady so that others might believe was, in a small way, answered by way of that branch.

On the way to their house, Jacinta and Francisco passed by Lucía’s home. Lucía’s mother, sister and several neighbors were at the door.

“Aunt Maria Rosa,” Jacinta cried out with joy, “we saw Our Lady again! It was at Valinhos! See here, Our Lady had one foot on this twig and the other on that one.”

Jacinta gave the branch to Lucía’s mother. The mother’s face showed great surprise as she put the branch to her nose.

“What does this smell of ?” she asked.

“It is not perfume, it’s not incense nor perfumed soap; it’s not the smell of roses nor anything I know, but it is a good smell.”

The whole family gathered and each wanted to hold the branch and smell the beautiful scent.

From that moment, Lucía’s mother and her whole family slowly turned away from their opposition and disbelief.

Lucía began with the humble question, ‘What do you want of me?’

The fifth apparition: The 13th of September The words that stayed in the minds of the children were the last words spoken by Our Lady at Valinhos: “Pray, pray a great deal, and make sacrifices for sinners, for many souls go to hell for not having someone to pray and make sacrifices for them.” All three, but especially Jacinta, had been praying and sacrificing. With those words, they had an even stronger desire for mortification, prayer and suffering. Their one longing was to close that terrifying furnace of hell so that no more souls could go there.

The children prayed much, but they sacrificed themselves even more. They trained their minds to discover new ways of suffering for the conversion of sinners.

Lest others misunderstand the motives of their mortifications and prevent them from saving souls from hell, they kept this a secret between themselves. Only under orders from her superiors, many years later, did Lucía relate the extent of their sacrifices.

One of the many ways they mortified themselves would later be mentioned by Our Lady. While pasturing their sheep, they found a piece of rope. Playfully, Lucía tied it around her arm and soon discovered that it hurt. “Look, this hurts! We could tie this around our body for another sacrifice.”

The rope was thick and very rough. They cut it in three pieces and tied it around their waists. The sharp pain it caused was difficult to endure, especially for little Jacinta. Lucía suggested that she take it off, but Jacinta insisted she keep it on to save sinners from hell. They even wore the rope to bed. This prevented them from getting the rest they needed to carry out their daily tasks.

Sept. 13 finally arrived. Before sunrise, crowds gathered around the children’s homes. Everyone wanted to speak to them or to ask a special remembrance to Our Lady. “When it came time to leave for the Cova da Iria,” Lucía would later write, “I left with Jacinta and Francisco, but there were so many people that we could hardly move a step. The roads overflowed with people. Everyone wanted to see and speak to us. There was no human respect in that crowd. Ordinary people, even noble ladies and gentlemen, succeeding in breaking their way through the crowd surrounding us, fell on their knees before us, asking that we bring their needs before Our Lady. Many others, unable to get near us, shouted, ‘for the love of God, ask Our Lady to cure my lame child... ask her to make my child see... to make my child hear... ask her to bring my husband and son back from the war... to convert a sinner... to make me, sick with tuberculosis, whole again.”

When they finally arrived at the holm oak, Lucía as usual started the rosary, with the people responding. They were almost finished when the children arose to scan the horizon. They had seen the flash that meant the Lady was arriving. A globe of light was visible to many in the crowd.

The Lady stood over the same holm oak. Again, Lucía began with the humble question, “What do you want of me?”

“Let the people continue to say the rosary every day to obtain the end of the war,” Our Lady responded. She renewed

the promise she made during her last apparition. “In the last month, in October, I shall perform a miracle so that all may believe in my apparitions. If they had not taken you to the village, the miracle would have been greater. St. Joseph will come with the Baby Jesus to give peace to the world. Our Lord also will come to bless the people. Besides, Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of Sorrows will come.

“God is pleased with your sacrifices but does not wish that you sleep with the rope.

Wear it only during the day.”

Many years later Lucía wrote what many of the saints have before, that a most pleasing sacrifice to the Lord is offering your day to Him and doing your duties well. The children were not able to sleep with the rope. It affected how they watched over the sheep and how they carried out their other chores. Our Lady was gently teaching them this lesson.

“They have requested me to ask you many things,” Lucía then said. “This girl is a deaf mute. Don’t you want to cure her?”

“In the course of the year she will be improved.”

“Will you help these other people?” Lucía asked.

“Some I will cure; but the others, no. Our Lord does not have confidence in them.”

“The people would like very much to have a chapel built here,” Lucía suggested.

“Use half of the money received so far for the litters. On one of them, place the statue of Our Lady of the Rosary. The other half should be set aside to help with the building of the chapel.”

“Many people say that I am a swindler who should be hanged or burned. Please perform a miracle for all to believe,” Lucía begged.

“Yes, in October, I will perform a miracle so that all may believe.”

“Some people gave me these two letters for you and a bottle of cologne.” Lucía did not want to forget any requests.

“None of that is necessary for heaven.”

Our Lady then began to leave. Lucía, pointing towards the east, shouted to the people, “If you want to see Our Lady, look that way!” They looked eagerly towards the east and many saw the luminous globe now ascending towards heaven.

As soon as it disappeared, the whole crowd swarmed the three children, asking many questions and pressing them to tell them the secret. Their parents had to struggle to make their way through the crowd. Once they did, they brought the children home.

All was now in place for the next, and the last, apparition. The children were now prepared for what would come.

e must learn and appreciate the words of our day, which define reality for us and point to the challenges we face: democracy, diversity, equality, inclusivity, marginalization, misogyny, racism, sexism, homophobia, imperialism, colonialism, progressivism, autonomy and many others.

But it’s the wrong road These 13 words constitute the list of cant (meaning “hypocritical and sanctimonious talk”) suggested

Because we have substituted self, sex and the state for God, he argues, lies rush in “to fill up the void left by truth in retreat.” That is one reason St. John Paul II told us that “we need now more than ever to have the courage to look truth in the eye and to call things by their proper name” (“Evangelium Vitae,” 58). Abortion, for example, is murder, not “termination of pregnancy.”

The language we use matters greatly.

George Orwell taught us that in an essay which used to be mandatory reading in good schools – “Politics and the English Language”– in which he wrote, “In our time, political speech and writing are largely the defense of the indefensible.”

Orwell died in 1950. Imagine what he would think of our depraved language today.

But isn’t “church vocabulary” removed from the acrimonious language debate swirling around us? Here are 10 terms. See what you think. n “the box”: No, it’s the tabernacle. It has a red candle glowing in front of it because it houses the Blessed Sacrament. n “the cup”: No, it’s a chalice which, after the consecration, holds the Precious Blood. n “christen a child”: No, you do that to a ship. People are baptized. n “cross yourself”: We do make the Sign

of the Cross but, traditionally, in making it, we are blessing ourselves. n “faith community”: Is there something wrong with “church”? Is a restaurant an “eating community”? n he (referring to God): this is not to raise here the issue of “gender-inclusive” language; it is, rather, to point out that He and His should be capitalized when referring to Almighty God or to Our Lord. n The Lord: All right, of course; but customary Catholic language refers to Our Lord. “Our Father, who art in heaven” is not “The Father, who art in heaven.” n Our Church: No, it’s the Church, not our Church. There are many other terms we often use which smack of the ordinary or prosaic. We have a tendency toward familiarity, toward making profane what is sacred, toward treating the supernatural and divine as commonplace or mediocre. It’s a form of blasphemy.

Watch people enter a Catholic church.

Many correctly genuflect in front of the tabernacle – Where God is – and maintain respectful and prayerful silence.

Others, though, casually stroll in, immediately sit in a pew, and begin to look around to see if they can converse with others. They think, what else is there to do, after all?

Consider the priest or deacon: he wears a white dress, tied by a rope, with a big cloth over his shoulders, and wears a “thing” over it all. The “white dress” is an alb, a linen vestment that is blessed before being worn and symbolizes the purity of the soul with which the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass should be offered. The rope or belt is a cincture, blessed before use, symbolizing spiritual watchfulness (see 1 Pt 1:13-15). The “sash” over the shoulder (for a deacon) or around the neck (for a priest) is a stole, kissed by the priest or deacon before use, symbolizing the offices to which priests and deacons are ordained.

The outer garment is the chasuble (for priests) or the dalmatic (for deacons). The chasuble symbolizes charity and the yoke of Christ (see Col 3:14; Mt 11:30).

When sacred hymns become mere popular songs; when homilies become mere entertainment; when the Blessed Sacrament becomes a mere wafer; when Mass becomes a mere social occasion and a “celebration of our community” – we have desacralized what we should most cherish and revere.

If it’s too optimistic to expect that we may eliminate the cant from our socio-political lives today, we can and should call sacred matters by sacred names.
