Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I am delighted to welcome you to the Eucharistic Congress. During this Jubilee Year of Mercy we joyfully gather as the faithful of the Diocese of Charlotte to celebrate our faith and our love for the Eucharistic Lord. The Eucharist brings us together as one body in Christ. The theme of our congress this year echoes the Jubilee Year of Mercy: “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:36). These are words spoken by Jesus, in which He tells His disciples to practice mercy toward others. The practice of mercy demonstrates that we are children of the heavenly Father, who is merciful to all. It is in the Holy Eucharist that Jesus demonstrates His mercy in an exceptional way. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass makes present the sacrifice of the cross, the event through which Jesus in His great mercy saved us. In Holy Communion we are nourished on the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of our merciful Lord Jesus Christ. He brings us the mercy of our heavenly Father. Jesus is the incarnation of the Father’s mercy. The love of Christ which we celebrate in the Eucharist must move us to works of mercy toward our brothers and sisters. Jesus mercifully feeds us and nourishes us, and we in turn must mercifully nourish others through our works of mercy. In a spirit of joy and gratitude let us celebrate the Eucharistic Congress. The congress is a great blessing for our diocese. May the congress help us to grow in holiness, and assist us in reflecting the mercy of Almighty God in our daily lives. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Eucharistic Procession and Adoration 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 The Eucharistic Congress presents plenty of opportunities for the faithful to come and spend time with Our Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament. Eucharistic Adoration is a focal point for the Congress, as the Eucharist is the source and summit of our Catholic faith. Adoration offers a source of inspiration and peace for the thousands of Catholics who attend the annual two-day event. Adoration will begin at 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, starting with a procession from Hall B of the Charlotte Convention Center up to St. Peter Church, 507 S. Tryon St. Participants are welcome to carry electric candles. Adoration will then be held overnight at St. Peter Church from 9:30 p.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday. Starting at 9 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 10, the faithful of the Diocese of Charlotte are invited to join in the Eucharistic Procession through uptown Charlotte to the Charlotte Convention Center, where the Eucharistic Congress will be held. Line up along the procession route and join in with your parish once its banner passes. The Eucharistic Procession will culminate inside Hall A of the convention center, where a Holy Hour will be celebrated starting at 10:15 a.m. Saturday. Following the Holy Hour, silent Eucharistic Adoration will be held in the Chapel in Hall B, adjacent to the Confession Area. Members of the Knights of Columbus will stand at the entrance to the Chapel, where everyone is invited to come in, kneel and pray for as long as they like. Adoration will conclude at 4 p.m., and the celebration of Holy Mass will begin at 4:15 p.m. with Bishop Peter J. Jugis as the main celebrant. W. TR A

The procession route The Eucharistic Procession will begin at 9 a.m. at St. Peter Church at 507 S. Tryon St. It will continue north on Tryon Street, then turn onto East Third Street. From there, the procession will turn right onto South College Street, then turn left onto Stonewall Street and continue on to the Charlotte Convention Center. Enter the convention center through the large doorway. Ushers will be there to direct you. Then join your fellow Catholics from around the Diocese of Charlotte in the Holy Hour to follow. 5

Father Paweł Rytel-Andrianik is the spokesman for the Polish Episcopal Conference. He holds doctoral degrees in Biblical Theology and Oriental studies from the Franciscan Biblical University in Jerusalem and the Oxford University. He speaks a few dozen foreign languages, especially English, Italian, Spanish, French and the modern Hebrew. He is a lecturer at the Papal University of the Holy Cross in Rome. He is the author of three books and more than 300 articles about life of the Church, biblical studies and Jewish studies.

Father Chris Alar entered the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception, the religious community entrusted with spreading the message and devotion of Divine Mercy, as a postulant in July 2006. Before that, he received a B.S. in industrial engineering and an MBA from the University of Michigan. After working several years at a Fortune 500 company, he began his own consulting company in Charlotte in 2000. After answering the Lord’s call, he attended Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio, for his philosophy studies and earned his Masters of Divinity from Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell, Conn. Over the past several years he has been mentored by the world’s leading experts in Divine Mercy, and he has spoken at over 100 parishes to date. Currently he lives and works on Eden Hill in Stockbridge, Mass., home of the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy, where he serves as “Fr. Joseph, MIC,”director of the Association of Marian Helpers.

Vinny Flynn: ‘Seven Secrets of Divine Mercy’ 2:15 p.m.

Known to many as “the man who sings the Divine Mercy Chaplet on EWTN,” this author, musician and father of seven has been involved in a ministry of mercy for over 40 years. Flynn uses his gifts to help people really come to understand the teachings of the Church and open their hearts to the healing and transforming power of the Father’s love in every aspect of their lives. He is known for taking theological concepts and making them relatable and applicable to everyone. After many years of speaking, singing and co-authoring or editing many publications (including helping to edit the official English edition of “The Diary of St. Faustina”), Flynn became a best-selling author with the release of his first book, “7 Secrets of the Eucharist.” Since then he has written “21 Ways to Worship: A Guide to Eucharistic Adoration,” “7 Secrets of Confession,” “Mercy’s Gaze,” and his latest, “7 Secrets of Divine Mercy,” which was just released to coincide with the Jubilee Year of Mercy. The “7 Secrets” series has accompanying study guides and audiobooks available, and most of his books are also available in various foreign translations and as ebooks. Currently director of MercySong, Ministries of Healing, Flynn lives with his wife Donna in Massachusetts and travels frequently to speak at conferences and retreats.

The Congress’s theme and Eucharistic-focus is explored with crafts, music, storytelling, guided Adoration, and other supportive materials presented through a variety of media. As in previous years, the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia in Nashville will share their love of the Lord in the Holy Eucharist.
Middle School Track Room 213 – 12:15-3:30 p.m. (pre-registration required) Theresa Benson, ‘The Endless Ocean of Mercy’ Theresa Benson graduated from Belmont Abbey College in 2013 as a theology major. For the past four years, she has been the middle school youth minister at St. Matthew Church in Charlotte. Working with hundreds of teenagers, Theresa loves to share the truth about Christ and impact anyone’s life who she encounters.

Father Jason Barone’s home parish is St. Barnabas in Arden. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2005, he entered seminary for the Diocese of Charlotte, studying at Mount St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg, Md., and was ordained in June 2012. Past assignments have included serving as parochial vicar at Sacred Heart in Salisbury, Our Lady of Grace in Greensboro, and St. Patrick Cathedral. Now Father Barone lives in residence at St. Ann Church in Charlotte while serving as assistant chaplain to Charlotte Catholic High School and diocesan promoter of vocations. Sister Edeva Jover, O.P., serves at the youth ministry director at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Charlotte. Music will be provided by Adam Trufant and his band “G.K. and the ChesterTones” (Eric Wilkes, James Rosenbloom and John Bertucci). Trufant lives in Brevard and currently works as program director for Camps Kahdalea for girls and Camp Chosatonga for boys. In 2010, he graduated from Belmont Abbey College with a degree in political science and a double minor in philosophy and theology. His deep interests in outdoor education and ministry have brought him to work in various ministries and adventure companies in Central America, Asia and Oceania. Over the past decade, he has participated in and facilitated many programs growing a culture of life, including the Louisiana March for Life.

Members of St. Basil the Great Greek Catholic Mission Parish in Charlotte will be available at the Congress to answer questions about the traditions of the Eastern Catholic, or Byzantine, rite. The mission will also lead Vespers on Friday night. St. Basil is a mission of the Ukrainian GreekCatholic Eparchy (diocese) of St. Josaphat in Parma, Ohio, and in full communion with the pope. Child safety, lost children There will be three unmanned Child Safety Wristband locations: at the base of the escalators into Hall A, the entrance to Hall C, and in Concourse A near the Starbucks. Parents can write their cell phone number on the white wristbands provided and then put it on their child. In the event the child is separated from an adult, staff can call the phone number on the wristband to reach the parent/chaperone. Lost children will be taken to one of two locations (whichever is closer): the Eucharistic Congress Information Booth in Hall B (look for the gold drape), or the Volunteer Check-in area on Concourse A.

Interpretation for the Deaf
St. Paschal Baylon (15401592) was a shepherd and lay brother of the Franciscan Friars. His life was noted for his devotion to Eucharistic Adoration. In 1897 Pope Leo XIII declared St. Pascal the patron saint of all Eucharistic congresses and associations. His feast is on May 17.
Gain a plenary indulgence
Once again this year the Eucharistic Congress will offer interpreting for the deaf in Hall A. Volunteer signers will translate the Holy Hour, English Track speakers and the closing Mass. Ushers will direct those seeking sign interpretation to appropriate seating in the front of Hall A.
A plenary, or full, indulgence is offered to those who attend the Eucharistic Congress, go to confession, receive Holy Communion and offer prayers for the Holy Father within one week of the Congress. “An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven,” according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1471).
Don’t miss these relics of Divine Mercy First-class relics of St. John Paul II and St. Maria Faustina Kowalska of the Blessed Sacrament will be available for veneration in Hall B at the Adoration chapel.
Missed any of the talks? Not to worry! Nearly all of the talks at each year’s Eucharistic Congress, including the homily given by Bishop Peter Jugis (in English and in Spanish), are recorded and published to the Diocese of Charlotte’s YouTube channel after the congress is concluded.
Vietnamese Track There will be programming in Vietnamese from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, in Room 208. Father Hùng Lê will speak from 1 to 2 p.m. The sacrament of confession in Vietnamese will be available from 2 to 3 p.m., also in Room 208.
Help the Congress The Eucharistic Congress is free and open to the public. However, it costs approximately $30 per attendee to cover the building rental, the audio/visual support and the transportation and other costs associated with the event. Tax-deductible contributions are welcome and can be made securely online through www.charlottediocese.org/ donations. First Reading A reading from the Book of Exodus (Ex 16:2-4, 12-15) The whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The Israelites said to them, “Would that we had died at the Lord’s hand in the land of Egypt, as we sat by our fleshpots and ate our fill of bread! But you had to lead us into this desert to make the whole community die of famine!” Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will now rain down bread from heaven for you. Each day the people are to go out and gather their daily portion; thus will I test them, to see whether they follow my instructions or not. “I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them: In the evening twilight you shall eat flesh, and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread, so that you may know that I, the Lord, am your God.” In the evening quail came up and covered the camp. In the morning a dew lay all about the camp, and when the dew evaporated, there on the surface of the desert were fine flakes like hoarfrost on the ground. On seeing it, the Israelites asked one another, “What is this?” for they did not know what it was. But Moses told them, “This is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.” The word of the Lord. Gospel Reading A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (Luke 24:13-16, 28-35) That very day, the first day of the week, two of Jesus’ disciples were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus, and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him. As they approached the village to which they were going, He gave the impression that He was going on farther. But they urged Him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So He went in to stay with them. And it happened that, while He was with them at table, He took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized Him, but He vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those with them who were saying, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!” Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how He was made known to them in the breaking of the bread. Al ver eso, los israelitas se dijeron unos a otros: “¿Qué es esto?”, pues no sabían lo que era. Moisés les dijo: “Este es el pan que el Señor les da por alimento”. Palabra de Dios. Evangelio Lectura del santo Evangelio según san Lucas (Lc 24:13-16,28-35) El mismo día de la resurrección, iban dos de los discípulos hacia un pueblo llamado Emaús, situado a unos once kilómetros de Jerusalén, y comentaban todo lo que había sucedido. Mientras conversaban y discutían, Jesús se les acercó y comenzó a caminar con ellos; pero los ojos de los dos discípulos estaban velados y no lo reconocieron. Ya cerca del pueblo a donde se dirigían, él hizo como que iba más lejos; pero ellos le insistieron, diciendo: “Quédate con nosotros, por que ya es tarde y pronto va a oscurecer”. Y entró para quedarse con ellos. Cuando estaban a la mesa, tomó un pan, pronunció la bendición, lo partió y se lo dio. Entonces se les abrieron los ojos y lo reconocieron, pero él se les desapareció. Y ellos se decían el uno al otro: “¡Con razón nuestro corazón ardía, mientras nos hablaba por el camino y nos explicaba las Escrituras!” Se levantaron inmediatamente y regresaron a Jerusalén, donde encontraron reunidos a los Once con sus compañeros, los cuales les dijeron: “De veras ha resucitado el Señor y se le ha aparecido a Simón”. Nativo de Charlotte, el Obispo Peter J. Jugis es el cuarto obispo de la Diócesis de Charlotte. Ordenado sacerdote en en 1983 por el beato Juan Pablo II, Obispo Jugis ha servido en varias parroquias de la diócesis. Bajo su dirección, la diócesis comenzó a celebrar el congreso anual de la Eucaristía en el año 2005.

El Padre Paweł Rytel-Andrianik es el vocero de la Conferencia Episcopal Polaca. Él habla una docena de idiomas, especialmente inglés, italiano, español, francés y hebreo moderno. Él es conferencista de la Universidad Papal de la Santa Cruz en Roma. También es autor de tres libros y más de 300 artículos acerca de la Iglesia, estudios bíblicos y estudios judíos.

Su trayectoria de 15 años como evangelizador y predicador, le ha permitido llegar a países como España, Estados Unidos, Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, Brasil y Argentina, enfocando su musica en la Santa Eucaristia, también en trabajos sociales dentro de las carceles, hospitales, comunidades, empresas y conciertos en diferentes auditorios. Padre Julio Zafra: ‘La Misericordia, Escuela de Humanización y Santificación’ 12:30 p.m.

Recibió su ordenación sacerdotal en la Basílica Catedral de Lima, el 16 de julio de 1998, por manos del Señor Cardenal Augusto Vargas Alzamora. Estudio su Bachiller en Teología por la Facultad de Teología Pontificia y Civil de Lima y obtuvo su doctorado en Derecho Canónico por la Universidad de Navarra en el 2004 y su Bachiller en derecho civil en la Universidad de San Martín de Porres en el 2015. Ha sido formador propedéutico, notario eclesiástico en la curia diocesana de Lima, Formador en el seminario Mayor de su diócesis y profesor del Instituto Superior de Estudios Eclesiásticos. Actualmente desarrolla su ministerio como Juez del Tribunal Eclesiástico Interdiocesano de Lima y Párroco de la parroquia de la Virgen Dolorosa en el Perú.
Padre Roberto Yenny García: ‘Testigos de la Misericordia’ 1:30 p.m.

El Padre Roberto Yenny es sacerdote de la Diócesis de Tampico, México. Obtuvo una Licenciatura en Teología Moral en Roma, una Maestría en Terapia Familiar y una Maestría en Consejería y relación de ayuda. Ha dictado diferentes conferencias, es articulista en periódicos de su localidad y escribió el libro: “Reconciliadores: Pequeño Manual para Confesores”. Ha sido párroco, responsable de la pastoral juvenil y la pastoral carcelaria, así como de la formación permanente del clero. Actualmente es Rector del Seminario Diocesano, Consejero Pastoral y maestro de Filosofía y Teología en el Seminario.

El Padre Julio C. Domínguez, sacerdote diocesano de la diócesis de Charlotte. Miembro activo del Consejo presbiteral y miembro del consejo de consultores y promoción de vocaciones. Padre Julio ha trabajado en varias parroquias y es un promotor muy activo de la adoración al Santísimo Sacramento. Ha sido encargado del Congreso Eucarístico en la parte Hispana desde que comenzó la organización del Congreso, añadiendo la hora Santa en el salón Hispano a petición de muchos fieles que lo estaban pidiendo. El tema de éste año para la hora Eucarística será: “La Importancia del Perdón” reflexionando en el perdón que Dios nos da y el verdadero perdón que nosotros debemos dar a nuestros hermanos. 5
Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo, ¡Es para mí un gran placer en darles la bienvenida al Congreso Eucarístico! Durante este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia, nos reunimos con mucha alegría a medida que los fieles de la Diócesis de Charlotte nos reunimos para celebrar nuestra fe y nuestro amor por Nuestro Señor Sacramentado. La Eucaristía nos une como un solo cuerpo en Cristo. El tema del congreso de este año hace eco del Año Jubilar de la Misericordia: “Sean misericordiosos, como su Padre es misericordioso,” (Lucas 6:36). Están son las palabras que Jesús dice, y en las cuales Él dice a sus discípulos que practiquen y sean misericordiosos con los demás. La práctica de la misericordia demuestra que somos hijos e hijas de Nuestro Padre Celestial, el cual es misericordioso con todos. Es en la Sagrada Eucaristía que Jesús demuestra su misericordia de una manera excepcional. En el Sacrificio de la Santa Misa, se hace presente el sacrificio de la Cruz, el evento por medio del cual Jesús en su Infinita misericordia nos redimió. En la Santa Comunión, Dios nos alimenta con el Cuerpo, Sangre, Alma y Divinidad de Nuestro misericordioso Señor Jesucristo. Jesús nos trae la misericordia de Nuestro Padre celestial. Jesús es la encarnación de la Misericordia del Padre. El amor de Cristo que celebramos en la Eucaristía debe exhortarnos a las obras de caridad para con nuestro prójimo. Jesús en su misericordia nos alimenta y nos nutre, y nosotros entonces a cambio debemos alimentar a los demás por medio de nuestras obras de caridad. En un espíritu de alegría y gratitud, celebremos entonces este Congreso Eucarístico. El congreso es una gran bendición para nuestra diócesis. Que este congreso nos ayude a que crezcamos en santidad, y que nos ayude también a que reflejemos la misericordia de Dios Todopoderoso en nuestra vida diaria. Sinceramente en Cristo,

La Procesión Eucarística 9 a.m. 10 de septiembre La Procesión Eucarística, durante la cual el Obispo Peter J. Jugis lleva un relicario que contiene una Hostia consagrada – El Cuerpo, Sangre, Alma y Divinidad de Jesucristo – es un punto culminante de los dos días del Congreso Eucarístico. La procesión, presidida por el Obispo Jugis, se inicia a las 9 a.m. el Sábado 10 de Septiembre, en la Iglesia de San Pedro, 507 S. Tryon St., Charlotte. Le animamos unirse a la procesión y seguir a la Eucaristía, hacia el Centro de Convenciones de Charlotte. Los Primeros Comulgantes del 2016 encabezarán la procesión, junto al Obispo Jugis. (Ellos, junto a sus padres, clero, religiosos y portadores de banderas deberán reunirse en Tryon Street, sur de la Iglesia de San Pedro, a más tardar a las 8:30 a.m.) Los padres deben de caminar al lado de sus hijos a lo largo de la procesión. A medida que el Santísimo Sacramento se acerca, por favor, permanezcan en

La ruta de la procesión La Procesión Eucarística comenzará a las 9 am en la Iglesia de San Pedro en el 507 S. Tryon St. Se continuará hacia el norte por Tryon Street, luego gire en East Third Street. A partir de ahí, la procesión va a la derecha en South College Street, luego gire a la izquierda en Stonewall Street y continúe hasta el Centro de Convenciones de Charlotte. Ingrese al Centro de Convenciones a través de la puerta grande. Los acomodadores estarán allí para dirigirlos. Luego reunase con sus hermanos católicos de toda la Diócesis de Charlotte en la Hora Santa que sigue. 3
