Key 2024 Achievements

A letter to our Catholic Schools Broken Bay Community...

As we near the end of the year, it is a fitting moment to reflect on the transformative journey we have undertaken together through the last 5 years, implementing the Towards 2025 strategy—a bold initiative to re-imagine and enhance Catholic education across our diocese.

Developed in response to the changing needs of our community and evolving educational landscape, this strategy has guided us to remain missiondriven while striving for educational excellence.

Over the past few years, significant investments in strategic initiatives have paved the way for sustainable growth, innovation and collaboration. With many milestones achieved in 2024, there are new opportunities on the horizon.

We are now at a pivotal moment where we celebrate our achievements, reflect on our progress, and prepare for the future. To support this work of the strategy, we are pleased to share a booklet detailing our progress to date, including key achievements and the ongoing work of the Towards 2025 strategy. The next phase of this strategy will be released on July 4, 2025, continuing our mission of delivering exceptional Catholic education.

Thank you for your continued collaboration and support. In our community, we strive to support every student, staff member, and family to be empowered to reach their greatest potential.

1. We will develop a collaborative culture of continuous improvement

By 2025 there will be a strong culture of improvement focused on teaching and learning. This will be supported by a continuous improvement system where school improvement is aligned to curriculum and assessment planning approaches. The work of leaders and teachers will be supported by performance and development processes. Leaders and teachers will be clear about what they need to do to lift performance.

We will accompany students, families and staff to know Christ and to grow in faith

By 2025 our students, families and staff will be encouraged and supported as they discover the meaning of Christ in their lives. Family, school and parish relationships will thrive, helping to form our young people in Christ’s vision of life, as it has been interpreted by the Catholic community of faith over many centuries.

3.

We will maximise the learning growth of each student

By 2025 the moral imperative and the importance of delivering student achievement will be clearly communicated. There will be a common understanding that success for students in all aspects of schooling goes beyond academic achievement. Our work has and will always be about human flourishing; for the individual and for the common good. Our practices and approaches in wellbeing for learning will be such that each child will be known, challenged and supported, and have opportunities to be the very best they can be. The ambitions we hold for our students will compel us to strive collaboratively for continuous improvement.

By 2025 we will be attracting and retaining a high performing workforce. Staff across the system will be supported in their professional growth and development whether they are working directly with students or working to support those who work with students. Career pathways will be identified so that staff have access to relevant and contemporary professional learning. We will build the capability of our staff

We will embed future–focused systems, policies and processes

By 2025 a customer service mindset will strengthen the culture of welcome and mutual accountability to stimulate enrolment growth and financial viability. Effective systems and processes will inform communication and timely responsiveness so that innovation and efficient learning and teaching will be the norm.

Vision on a Page The Community of the Church of Broken Bay

The Catholic Diocese of Broken Bay is a portion of the people of God, a community of Christ's faithful in communion of faith and sacraments with its bishop. It exists to evangelise, to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ, gathered as one body and sent out to be missionary disciples.

6 Mission Priorities

Bishop Anthony Randazzo articulates six pastoral priorities to be placed at the centre of mission for the Diocese.

The person of Jesus Christ, and his message of Good News.

(1 John 1:1-4)

The Holy Spirit leads us in the way of discipleship.

(Matthew 28:18-20)

Commission Evangelisation & Mission

Building together a culture of vocation for all the baptised.

(Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1877)

Authentic Catholic education for the flourishing of human and faith development.

(Evangelii nuntiandi, n. 22)

A united message reflecting the voice of the bishop at the service of his people.

(Colossians 2:2-3)

3 Foundational Pillars

Justice and mercy place the poor at the heart of the Church.

(Matthew 25:40)

Three pillars form a foundation for mission for the Diocese. We stand on these pillars as we go about our work to achieve the six mission priorities

Council of Priests, College of Consultors, Deans, Chancery & Services

Supporting the Fields of Mission in the areas of Evangelisation, Stewardship, Safeguarding & Communications. Support

It is a year dedicated to God’s love and mercy. It celebrates the special gift of God’s grace and all the faithful are encouraged to be pilgrims of hope as they journey together in faith.

At Catholic Schools Broken Bay, we aim to know Christ and to live our core values every day. In doing so we echo the words of Pope Francis, and fan the flame of hope, looking to the future with trusting hearts and open spirits. Joy

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS - 2024

Learning Improvement

This year, we’ve made significant strides in improving teaching and learning across our schools. We’ve introduced programs to strengthen the Catholic identity of our leaders and teachers, ensuring our faith is at the heart of education. We’ve also implemented a clear and consistent approach to teaching, learning, and assessment through the CAP Framework (Curriculum, Assessment, and Pedagogy), so all students benefit from a high-quality education.

To support our staff, we’ve focused on building expertise, strengthening Collaborative Coaching to enhance teaching practices and rolling out a Middle Leadership Program to grow future school leaders. These efforts ensure that every teacher is well-supported to provide the best learning environment for every student.

Attract and Retain Teacher Expertise

We are proud to see strong teacher and educational leader interest across our diocese, attracting top talent to our schools. Key initiatives like additional System-wide Staff Development Days, Professional Learning as we embrace the new Curriculum, Collaborative Coaching, and enhancing Staff Wellbeing are shaping and empowering our educators to deliver their best. A new Enterprise Agreement, improving wages and conditions, is ensuring we continue to support our staff in providing exceptional education for our students.

Governance

CSBB will transition to incorporation on 1 January 2025. Responsibility for our 45 schools and 18,000 students will move to Catholic Schools Broken Bay Limited, a new not-for-profit organisation governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the Bishop of Broken Bay.

This change strengthens governance, fosters collaboration among schools, families, and parishes, and ensures our shared mission remains focused on the spiritual and academic growth of every student. Guided by our Shared Mission Principles, we remain committed to delivering authentic, compassionate Catholic education.

Cost Optimisation

Cost Optimisation was a key initiative undertaken to review and identify savings across our entire school system and strengthening our culture around good stewardship. By analysing operations, we found areas where we could work more efficiently while maintaining high quality education and care. This process has established benchmarks to guide future planning, ensuring that resources are used sustainably and effectively to support our schools and students.

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS - 2024

Emerging Initiatives

This year has marked exciting progress in emerging initiatives across our diocese. The Eileen O’Connor Catholic School completes its first year of operation and the program continues to grow, with two additional support classes opening in 2025, further enhancing opportunities for students with disabilities. At St Paul’s Catholic College, the historic transition to coeducation is underway, led by the college’s first female principal, ensuring a future of excellence. We have completed the initial data gathering phase of the North Shore Review which is foundational to informed decision-making to enhance education in this location.

These initiatives highlight our commitment to meeting the many needs of our students and communities.

Systems

CSBB has made significant progress in implementing its updated 3-year Cyber Roadmap, ensuring robust digital security and modernised IT systems across our schools. This work has been so successful that CSBB has been invited to share its learnings with other dioceses across the state.

In addition, we’ve advanced asset audits, planned repairs and maintenance, and compliance measures, aligning with regulatory standards. These efforts reflect our ongoing commitment to providing secure, high-quality learning environments for all students and staff.

Data Driven Insights

This year has seen remarkable progress in marketing and data insights, driving the strongest enrolment numbers in our history. These advancements are focused on enhancing the entire enrolment journey, helping our schools attract, support, and retain students and families. This ongoing work ensures we continue to grow and strengthen our school communities for the future.
